Taiiku Movies (Taiiku Podcast)

I don't like the Fangraphs projection for the White Sox, and I am scared for them. They need new ownership, a new front office, and to spend like they're in the third largest market in the U.S.

Anyway. This episode, I guess technically our first episode, is our annual top movies podcast! Welcome to the Taiiku Movies podcast, which is the Taiiku Podcast's movie content moved to a separate feed. We're gonna be doing the same thing we've been doing, talking about movies. And we've expanded the list to 10 movies from the usual five from the Taiiku Podcast.

Welcome to a teaser of Taiiku Movies. For those who have been listening to the Taiiku Podcast for a while, this won't be new. But for those finding a random movies podcast, we did a lot of podcasts on various movies before I separated them to different feeds.

Our first foray into any single director's work was Akira Kurosawa. And thus, our first podcast ever was on Sanshiro Sugata, which we paired at the time with the much worse Sanshiro Sugata 2.

Chris (@antoniuspius) had yet to join us at that time, so it's just Chris (@gokuffy) and me (@taiikumenco).

This was the first episode of our Akira Kurosawa series with Chris (@antoniuspius) on it, so I figured this would be a great second episode sampler for the Kurosawa films. It's also one of his, perhaps his greatest, samurai epic. So why not. Joining Chris, now as always, is Chris (@gokuffy) and me (@taiikumenco).

We finished up our Akira Kurosawa series in November of 2020. After that, we took a short break over our usual December-February series of podcasts, then began anew with a different director. When we first set out on the journey through any single director, I (@taiikumenco) had picked Kurosawa since I had quite a few of his movies from the extensive Criterion library. In the end, we had to fill in a few gaps here and there with non-Criterion fare, but we made it through alright.

Next, Chris (@gokuffy) selected one of his favorite directors and one he's watched through everything multiple times, David Lynch. Joining us, as always, in this journey was Chris (@antoniuspius). Having only seen the same two films between us (Blue Velvet and Mulholland Dr., unless memory serves incorrectly, which it often does) while Chris had seen his entire filmography provided a different and interesting view into the director and exploring his works.

We did a set of six David Lynch shorts prior to the Eraserhead episode, but I figured the first feature would be better representative of our thoughts on the man himself.

Perhaps David Lynch's magnum opus. Were it not for the blatant racism in season two and The Return, almost certainly his best work. Certainly his most thought provoking. Where else to give a little sampler of the man himself than with season one of his television series, Twin Peaks. It's a medium he's clearly much more comfortable in, and he can make it just as indecipherable as his movies, so why not make 18 hours of content instead of 2.

Chris has taken over the sports nonsense from me for this Melville series, so without further ado: Baseball has sped up spring training games to such a blazing fast speed with the pitch clock that it's given us even more time to pay attention to wild and crazy NBA & NHL trade deadlines. But the award for "What is even going on?", as always, goes to the NFL. Any team in the league can sign Lamar Jackson (for $250 million and 2 1st rd picks) but only Baltimore has even offered him a contract Carolina has traded up to 1st overall to draft a QB but to do so gave away their top WR. And somewhere out there your favorite team is probably just waiting to do something between now and week 1 that is met with all those reaction gifs of people looking around in utter bewilderment.

It's the Major League Baseball playoffs! Mercifully, MLB let the White Sox stop playing three games early, so that just goes down as an automatic sweep by the Padres. And the Mariners kept it interesting for two games before dying in game three behind a poor Luis Castillo performance at an inopportune time, then Jerry Dipoto said "we have a long term plan to win 54 percent of our games over a 10 year period" and well that's just dumb and sad, but not as dumb or sad as the White Sox. Every team I've wanted to win in the Wild Card series' have been swept (Phillies up on the Marlins 7-0 in the 9th as I write this, so the statement will probably remain true).
