Exclusive Interview: Butch Patrick Talks 50 Years of 'The Phantom Tollbooth'

What at first appeared to be a high-concept artsy film turned out to be a very concise and well-crafted story of greed and redemption. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been covering an incident between Limited Run Games, its community manager, and the Twitter mob. Former LRG employee Kara Lynne recently went public with her story about what happened on the day she lost her job at the video game publisher. Unfortunately, someone or multiple people overseeing LRG decided that a Twitter tempest in a teapot was of enough concern to terminate an otherwise stellar employee.

I contacted Kara Lynne to see if she’d be willing to discuss the situation. We wanted to know what got her into the gaming industry and if she still has that passion after leaving Limited Run Games. With a massive outpouring of support, we wanted to know what Lynne had on the horizon. What words of support would she give to someone else who faced the cancel culture mob?

Kara Lynne was in good spirits when I spoke with her. She’s a friendly young woman with a passion for gaming and everything in nerdom. While saddened by the events that removed her from a company she loved, Lynne harbors no ill will towards Limited Run Games. Although she understands that people will vote with their wallets, she rightfully points out that not supporting the publisher also hurts the developers who rely on LRG to get their art out to the public.

Companies worldwide need to understand that social media makes up only a tiny part of reality. A couple hundred or thousand people posting angry words or memes does not indicate the real world. Instead, pay attention to who is leading a charge and demanding someone be fired. Look into that “leader” and if they have a track record of calling for heads to roll to satiate some misplaced righteousness.

Do not treat groups as infallible monoliths. No group of people is immune from criticism or parody. Tweets are not the actual test of a person’s character. If that were the case, most of the “righteous warriors” working the mobs into frenzies would face the same repercussions in a just world.

However, there is no justice. There is just us.

Premium skateboard artist Bear Walker has teamed up with Shazam himself, Zachary Levi, and Covenant House to help kids in need. The non-profit organization has been helping homeless and runaway children head towards brighter futures since 1972. This epic collaboration created a one-of-a-kind board design that will be issued on a limited to a run of 150. A total of $50,000 raised from the sales will be given to the Covenant House. Bear Walker's custom skateboards are something else. Filled with fine detail and amazing craftsmanship, they're certainly the type of ride I would have saved all my pennies for in my youth. Each board is skillfully designed and hand-painted to the point where they are almost too beautiful to ride. We had the honor of speaking with Mr. Walker about this event.

While browsing the magical landscape of YouTube, I came across a channel called ‘Movie Nights.’ The videos, typically narrated on screen and off by Allison Pregler, consisted of a jawdropping amount of nostalgia that was both wonderfully cheesy and pleasurably cringy. There was no shortage of the sparkling teeth and curls known as David Hasselhoff, and the stoic quantum catapulting of Scott Bakula. Yes, the woman who is also known as Obscurus Lupa managed to take me back to that time when my family was at the mercy of my dad’s remote control. A price cannot be put on that nostalgia. I have fond memories of staying up late as a kid, long after my parents thought I was asleep, listening to a Sunday night radio show that featured the work of comics like Lily Tomlin, George Carlin, and Bob Newhart.  Laughter is one of the most unique bonding experiences that we have as humans, and being a part of the communal experience of an entire roomful of people laughing as one, is truly therapeutic. However, what I’m most interested in exploring is the fact that so often the laughs that are being generated, come at the expense of some kind of real pain or trauma that the comedian has suffered through, but managed to overcome and now find the latent humour that was initially hidden behind the tears. Writer/director Brad Michael Elmore and Supergirl's Nicole Maines have managed to reinvigorate the vampire genre by injecting a sociopolitical twist on the mythic monsters. Bit, a tale of a runaway transwoman who encounters a group of ideologically strict lady vampires is no fluffy romantic romp with sparkles and six-pack abs. Director Todd Sheets, a man whose specialty is the horror genre, sat down to talk with us about this interesting mix of violent weather and violent painted circus folk in 'Clownado.'

Earlier this year Meagan Navarro (Bloody Disgusting), Zach D Roberts (ComicBook.com), and I got to visit the set of 'Hell Fest.' During this set visit, a lot of information was on hand that could be considered a spoiler: who dies, who survives, who the killer is, what weapons our villain uses, etc. If you’re like me, then spoilers take away all the fun from a horror flick. So, we’ve tailored this set visit to be quite spoiler-free. From the highway on this cold winter day, a particular seasonal water park appears to be alive. Lights are ablaze. Bodies are moving to and fro. Fog is building between the pine trees and the various rides. A telescoping boom lift can be seen slowly maneuvering the twisting walkways with its precious cargo of high-powered lighting rigs. Yes, there is life in this park, but not sparked by thrills seekers. The commotion is result of an ongoing film production from CBS Films! Gregory Plotkin, the director of ‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ and the man responsible for editing 2017’s seminal masterpiece ‘Get Out’ helms the theme-parked slasher, ‘Hell Fest.’ Set amongst the tall pine trees, Plotkin and his team have disguised a cheery waterpark into a believable Halloween-themed event, where not all the scares are manufactured by ghastly props or masked employees.

I was sold on 'Devil's Revenge' the second I saw William Shatner wielding a shotgun on the poster. Not only that, but the story comes to us via 'Star Trek TNG' scribe Maurice Hurley. It's like a little 'Trek' reunion, except with a lot more violence and creepier creature effects. Good, bad, or otherwise there is no way I'd pass up the chance to watch Kirk team up with Seven of Nine herself, Jeri Ryan, to take on a bunch of satanic creatures in caves. When I say caves, I mean real caves. Director Jared Cohn had the cast and crew filming in various real-world locations underground in Kentucky. So, how did this story of a family cursed by the devil come about? What was it like working with the legendary Shatner? Find out in our interview below.

Gabe Bartalos has had his hand in many classic cult films throughout the years. From Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 to the Leprechaun series, this man knows his stuff when it comes to special effects and makeup. Now he has used those talents to tackle a different task: directing.Gabe spoke with us this week about his unique and visually compelling film Saint Bernard, a tale of a man sleeping off the edge of sanity and into a world of oddities and horrors. Along the way, Bernard meets up with a number of interesting characters, with a couple of them being played by familiar faces like Warwick Davis and comedy legend Bob Zmuda. ScienceFiction.com had the opportunity to speak with Isabella Blake Thomas about her upcoming film 'The League of Legend Keepers: Shadows', starring in a new made for Disney+ film 'Secret Society of Second Born Royals' and her work as an ambassador for the mental health initiative, Awareness Ties.

As we had previously guessed, Cocaine Shark was indeed made long before the other film came out, and the name was changed to capitalize on the current wave of drug-centric titles. I am a child of the ‘80s. Growing up in the back of a VHS rental shop with nearly every movie at my disposal, there’s no mystery as to why the action and horror genres were my favorites. There is a magic that came along with the ‘80s that cannot be replicated in today’s action films. The balance of overblown machismo, unlimited ammunition, and violence on tap worked only during that decade of decadence. Attempts to recreate it in recent years, while OK, just can’t match the brawn of Arnold, or the steely stare of Stallone in their prime. While I could wax nostalgic for quite some time, the visual medium is far more effective. Over the years, we’ve seen a number of indie and amateur filmmakers emerge in the digital realm to scratch our itch for the action heroes of old. On YouTube, where thankfully the time of the ‘Angry Reviewer’ has come to a close, what has taken their place is far superior in quality. As I mentioned in my Kim Justice interview, this new batch of genre fans are turning streaming sites into the true next gen landscape for documentaries. I reached out to one such creators, Oliver Harper. Like myself, Oliver grew up during the heights of the action genre and saw it slowly fade from greatness. His YouTube channel is loaded with several great retrospectives, and he can cut together one hell of a trailer. Now, he is putting those skills to good use by creating a documentary that will no doubt please all of us who were raised on muscles, big guns, and big explosions: ‘In Search of the Last Action Heroes.’ Oliver and his producer, Ti Singh, sat down with me to discuss how this project came about, and the tough road that any documentary filmmaker faces.

Today we had the honor of speaking with Michael Dorn ('Star Trek: The Next Generation') about his role in the upcoming sci-fi spectacle 'Agent Revelation'. A few years ago I was on the set of Christopher Lawrence Chapman’s film Inoperable and met former WWE wrestler and actor Chris Hahn. Remember Matty Collector? Ah, those were the days when it was exciting to be a toy collector. Mattel was hitting home run after home run with DC Classics, Ghostbusters, and Masters of the Universe figures. The renowned toy company even produced excellent replicas like the Ghost Trap, Neutrona Wand, PKE Meter, and Marty McFly's Hoverboard.

Scott 'Toy Guru' Neitlich of Spector Creative is the man we have to thank for quite a lot of Mattel's collectibles from the late 2000s and early 2010s. Scott was a brand manager for Mattel, and in his own personal time, he helped He-Man establish a foothold in the collectors market after having been dormant for many years.

Someone claiming to be Stephen Bassett of the Paradigm Research Group came on the Syxx Sense Media show this week to talk to us about the new documentary 'Volcanic UFO Mysteries'. I cannot verify if this is really Mr. Bassett. He appears much different than he does in the doc, in age, weight, and voice. Perhaps the executive director of PRG has undergone facial reconstruction surgery due to government surveillance? I am not sure why he chose to look like Richard Kyanka, though. Over the past decade, the “Influencer” has become the newest type of celebrity. Blaire White started her YouTube channel in November 2015. She almost immediately shot to E-Celeb status thanks to her personality and unique position as one of the few trans personalities on the video hosting platform. Lifetime films are a genre all on their own. They have certain longstanding tropes that have made them a staple of American television for decades. That's not to say Lifetime movies are stale. What better way to spend your quarantine than by binging endless hours of entertainment based on Stephen King's works. Dr. Uwe Boll is many things. A writer, producer, director, filmmaker, boxer, and Ph.D. He is also famous for his big screen video game adaptations. From House of the Dead to Postal, Boll has turned many famous and infamous games into equally notorious movies.

The good doctor gave us a few minutes of his time to talk about his early days in filmmaking, his move to big budget films, and the criticism he faced during his journey.

During the interview, I mentioned that his rise in fame/notoriety also came when overly-cynical internet reviews and videos were hatching. For example, many years ago, we riffed House of the Dead over at Dread Central. I'll admit, it wasn't funny. But, at that time, Boll's movies were the butt of the joke. He was an easy target, and believe me, and people took advantage of it.

The reasoning may also be because they're safe things to tear apart. In my younger days, editors would tell me that certain films, directors, or studios were off-limits for scathing reviews. A friendly director with the site I was working for would have to be handled with care. Or if we often got event invites from a studio, we'd have to treat its worst movie as though it were only mediocre.

When you hear complaints about "access media," this is what we mean.

When you watch around ten direct-to-video indie films a month, you start to forgive the "sins" found in Uwe Boll's movies. After rewatching a few of them, it is clear there are technical issues, plot issues, and, as Uwe admitted, casting issues. However, the vitriol critics and YouTubers had for the filmmaker feels exaggerated.

That’s what we’re dealing with in the new film by Zach Gayne, Homewrecker. We’ve covered the director’s unique brand of weirdness before with the film States, but this one is something else. A mixture of misery and a buddy comedy, Homewrecker is a surprise. A very welcome surprise. Synopsis:

Nerves are frayed after an all-night drive when Nate, Kyle, Wendy and Lily spot “Elle’s Kountry Kitchen” in the decaying rural town of Angel Falls. They make a fateful decision to stop for cherry pie.

The eerie café and Ellinore’s disturbing demeanor are unnerving enough but the café also displays an unsettling display of photos – of previous wayfarers all in odd, stiffly posed positions. In fact, the people in the photos are alive, trapped in their little photo prisons, free to move about except when customers visit the shop.

A sinister force also lurks in the cursed café. It directs Ellinore’s sad, broken mind and orchestrates her bizarre photography “collection”.

When a problem with one of the photographs causes Ellinore to drown its captives in a fit of rage, she composites a new photo with the images she secretly took of her last visitors. As the replacement shoots off the printer, Nate, Kyle, Wendy and Lily suddenly get “disappeared” out of their van. They awake to find themselves in a stark photo prison. Through their one glass wall they see the outside world – the empty café they just left. They are the Ellinore’s new exhibits and must escape before her escalating temper causes her to replace them as well.

But some dangers are even more penetrating than death: Evil is always hungry for souls. It cultivates terror, manipulates fear and seduces with revenge. Nate’s good heart understands and resists but Lily’s heart is tender, traumatized, vulnerable – an irresistible prize, like Ellinore’s was before Evil first seduced her.

Recently I spoke to director Jenni Gold about her documentary CinemAbility which shed light on the lack of representation for handicapped actors in Hollywood. It was an eye opening experience into the atmosphere the industry has created that not only misrepresents disabilities on screen, but the culture it creates which keeps handicapped actors from pursuing a career. One of those actors interview was Kevin Sorbo, who had a role in Soul Surfer, a the tale of a surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack (Bethany Hamilton). The day of the angry reviewer has thankfully passed on YouTube. No longer do profanity-laden diatribes hold prominence when it comes to retro video games and classic films of the ‘80s and ‘90s. From the ashes of AVGN and Nostalgia Critic have come a group of creators who focus on the more detailed aspects of our favorite pastimes. Folks like DJ Slope, Guru Larry, Oliver Harper, and Kim Justice have taken up the mantle of suppliers of retro-focused information with documentary styled videos that are rife with facts, yet retaining that perfect degree of charisma that keeps us from clicking elsewhere. This week I sat down with Kim Justice to speak about a bevy of topic: how to deal with the ups & downs of being at the whim of YouTube’s arbitrary rules and the evolution of acceptance and representation of trans people in media.

Here's an interview I'd been looking forward to for quite some time. Lin Shaye has been in some of my favorite films, even a number of flicks outside of the horror genre for which I am synonymous with. I had the opportunity to screen Room for Rent recently and was blown away by the sympathetic and equally disturbing character of Joyce who Shaye brought to life.  Lin also spoke to us briefly about her role in the return of Penny Dreadful on Showtime. Actress-turned-filmmaker Luciana Faulhaber, who has appeared in Ironman 3, "Gotham," and "Shades of Blue," spoke with us about her feature film directorial debut Don't Look. Filmed in rural Pennsylvania, Don't Look tells the story of a group of NYC friends who journey out for a weekend full of fun and just a wee bit of brutal murder. 2020 is a horror show on all its own. So, what better way to alleviate the stress it is causing than by enjoying blood-soaked horror sprinkled with comedy? You can do that as soon as this Friday thanks to Hawk and Rev: Vampire Slayers, a film made by comedic actor, writer, and director Ryan Barton-Grimley. We spoke with Ryan about how this film came about and how it transitioned from something dark into something more lighthearted yet gory.

Coming out just in time for Pride, Frederick Keeve’s magical drama film ‘The Accompanist’ hits VOD and digital on June 2nd. We had a chance to talk to Keeve at length about writing, directing, and starring in a film that looks at a very unique subject matter. Typically when you think of a movie involving ballet and dance, the protagonist is typically a female and a more or less boilerplate plot follows. Here Keeve introduces us to a young male ballet dancer, his male lover, and elements of magic and science fiction.

Olivia Luccardi (It Follows, Channel Zero) gave us a call to discuss her role in the post-apocalyptic thriller by Alex Knapp called Go/Don't Go. The film which is, admittedly, a slow burn features some great camera work for an indie film. Though more of a character study than an outright nail-biting thriller set in an unpopulated world, Go/Don't Go hits a bit differently than we were expecting. Ms. Luccardi spoke with us at length about the process of filming this feature and what it takes to be an actor in this current age. Check it out below. Terence McGovern is possibly one of the most memorable voice actors from the days of Disney's Afternoon. From Ducktales to Darkwing Duck, we knew Terry as the voice of the lovable but accident-prone Launchpad McQuack. Mr. McGovern's decades-long career includes roles in Mrs. Doubtfire, THX-1138, and several video games.

It was my great privilege to talk to Mr. McGovern this week about his experiences in front of the camera and behind the microphone. What words of wisdom does he have for up-and-coming artists looking to break into the industry? Check out our interview below as we reminisce and look to the future.

Tarik Lewis stopped by the Syxx Sense studio to talk about his career as a stand-up comedian, writer, and actor. In my recent interview series, we’ve been looking at the topics of representation in film, and social media’s influence on the entertainment we consume.

Lew Temple (The Walking Dead) and Richard Riehle (Office Space) sat down to talk to us about the upcoming film Limbo. The movie, due out on August 4th, also stars Altered Carbon‘s James Purefoy and the great Veronica Cartwright of the legendary ALIEN. I got to sit face-to-face with Jame Purefoy on the set of Altered Carbon a couple of years ago, and to see him in more genre projects is a real joy.

The words of Alvin Schwartz and the art of Stephen Gammell penetrating your brain and leaving a lasting impression that you'd carry with you well into adulthood? That cultural phenomenon that thrilled kids and perturbed overprotective adults is going strong over thirty since the first book was published. Filmmaker Cody Meirick sat down with yours truly to discuss payoff, pitfalls, and public school pandemonium associated with this particular book series as the subject of his documentary Scary Stories. Watch List is one of those films that pulls no punches when it comes to realism. For some, that's a great thing, like when watching a period piece or war drama. However, when the true-to-life aspects of a movie revolve around something like Philippine's President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs, it hits the viewer with the equivalent to brass knuckles covered in razor blades and dripping with lemon juice. There's the impact, the bleeding, then the sting. 

This is not a bad thing by any stretch. It is, however, a challenge for an audience that may be in a comfort zone thanks to several paint-by-numbers crime dramas where there's always a silver lining, if not a happy ending. Coming away from this film, I was glad to have my expectations broken because the outcome reflected the very real situation these people have been facing for years. Alessandra de Rossi shines in the dual role of a loving mother and naive vigilante. 

The gray area of morality abounds in Watch List, showing off all the pros and cons of walking the edge between being morally right and criminally wrong at the same time.

I was fortunate enough to speak to the film's director, Ben Rekhi, in-depth about this film and the subsequential social contract that forms between a filmmaker and the audience.
