02 Aug 2019Talking with a local: Steven Bedford Brown01:02:58
Steven Bedford Brown is as local as you can get in the Hampton Bays area.
He started surfing around twelve years old, riding over the Ponquogue bridge year round with a few buddies. He grew up in a rigid pecking order that taught grommets respect and to protect their local spots. He’s taken the mantle as an elder in the lineup but times have changed and the once rigid pecking order has devolved into a bit of a free for all with the huge influx of new surfers and a litigious society where just burning a kook can get you in trouble with the law. Tyler sat down with Bedford to discuss the changing lineups, and positive ways to help return some order to the surf. Methods that reflect on a bygone era but also look to the future and how surfing can change for the positive. Sit back and enjoy a fun conversation between two crusty surfers.

14 Feb 2019Ep. 82: NY Surf's Court Jester : Danny DiMauro01:26:31
The 80 or so minutes of this episode is a meager attempt to give proper room for writer, furniture peddler, and former hair stylist Danny DiMauro to share his life of surf and style. From the threats of violence in Montauk after making the film "Kook Paradise", to the "NYC surf shop wars" of the Aughts, adult learners and Joel Tudor, jetting to Kelly's pool, the Saturday's Magazine Editor-at-large lives big and goes deep. He outwardly dislikes the label of Legend, but he's entitled to it.

13 Sep 2017Episode 22. Nunez Sisters Survive Irma and New York Gets the Groundswell00:48:27
It's an odd thing for surfers to enjoy the bliss of local groundswell while watching from afar the havoc that same storm drops upon another state. This week we hear two sides of Hurricane Irma. Alex and Danielle Nunez call in from a car speakerphone to share their experiences surviving the storm in South Florida where they have been without power and running water for a few days. Later in the show, I give a snap shot of that same storm's reach in New York which inspired any local with a board to use the word 'epic' and 'perfect'.

19 Oct 2017Episode 25. Lensmen Etan Blatt & Jason Belsky and the Art of Scoring00:52:13
Etan Blatt and Jason Belsky are an unlikely duo. One loves to swim in the water to get the shot, the other is a landlubber who shoots from the sky above with his drone. One is quiet and stoic and the other is charismatic and gregarious. Together, these two create magic with their footage. This weeks show recounts the month of scoring and... not scoring. Both of these men are extremely talented and hard workers who go out of their way to get the shot. The stories they tell are legendary and we get a taste during this episode.

02 Dec 2017Episode 32: Matt Warshaw Needs Your Help!02:05:38
Matt Warshaw is the humble keeper of The Encyclopedia of Surfing. He has devoted his life to preserving the historical account of surf culture and lore. He grew up as a Z-boy and even finished a respectable 43rd on the World Tour back in the early 80's. He became an editor at Surfer Magazine and wrote tons of books on surfing. He's smart, articulate and very thoughtful. Our conversation wanders from the from philosophical to the hard truths we face as surfers. His life's project, The Encyclopedia of Surfing (EOS), is a gift to surfers around the world. It's a knowledge base that all can draw from and find inspiration. Unfortunately, it can be expensive maintaining such megalith of a website, and Matt has found himself at a crossroads. He needs to raise $30K by the end of December or else the whole site will go away. All that incredible knowledge and content, will just disappear and the surf world will be lesser for it. So, we are asking all of our listeners to go and contribute or better yet, subscribe to the EOS for as little as $3 a month and help keep surf culture rich. You can go to encyclopediaofsurfing.com/subscribe/ to subscribe. This is definitely one of our most fun interviews and we hope you enjoy and are inspired to support a worthy cause. Enjoy...

In the first episode of Swell Season Surf Radio for 2018, we have a very special interview that was conducted in 2012. Co-Host, Tyler Breuer, had the fortunate opportunity to Interview Tom Curren and the late Sonny Miller in front of a live audience in 2012. The event was a fundraiser for Hurricane Sandy Relief and was truly a special evening. It is the only recorded interview with Tom and Sonny. It would also be their last interview together as Sonny had passed away a year later. This interview took place following the first ever theater screening of "Searching For Tom Curren" and the crowd was stoked! The Sound quality might not be the best but, the stories and anecdotes that are told are worth a listen.

10 Jan 2018Ep.38: The Utterly Unique Steve White01:10:23
It's best to spare you insufficient descriptions of legendary waterman Steve White and simply share some of his life story and philosophy of surf and the water. He arrived to the show fresh from surfing around icebergs on the East End, and proceeded to detail his life from a childhood encounter with Andy Warhol at candy store, all the way to surfing Pipe and thinking it was Rock Pile. After the mics went off he helped restore my energy from a neck injury. I wish there were many Steve Whites out there but there is only one and we got him for an hour in change. Enjoy.

14 Feb 2018Ep. 42. Black Surfing Association's Tony Corley and Louis Harris00:54:28
In 1974 Tony Corley wrote an open letter to Surfer Magazine calling out fellow black surfers to represent and get to know each other. In response, he received warm support but also a racist threat. A year later he founded the Black Surfing Association which has been bringing black surfers together in celebration of waves in Central and Southern California for 43 years. Inspired by this work, Rockaway's Louis Harris started offering free surf lessons in 2016 to any kid who wanted to jump in. We talk about perceptions of who can and can't surf, the barriers of access to stoke, and the black surfing pioneer Nick Gabaldon, who paddled 12 miles across segregation barriers to ride Malibu.

27 Jun 2018Ep.60: Battle Against Shoreline Privatization with "Free the Beaches" Author Andrew Kahrl00:57:42
There are 253 miles of shoreline in Connecticut and only seven of them are free and open to the public. Andrew Kahrl Associate Professor of history and African American Studies at University of Virginia brings us the story of Ned Coll who mobilized a multi-decade battle against town residency requirements and other segregating mechanisms along the Connecticut coast which make a day at the beach expensive, impractical or simply illegal. Our conversation delves into the core of public and private rights to the water.

03 Jul 2018Ep. 61: Alex Valich - The Bodega Boardrider Crew Interview01:21:39
Alex Valich is the host of the Bodega Boarder Crew, a podcast that mixes old school hip hop with modern day surf culture. It’s a fun listen if you ever get a chance to listen to it. Born and bred on the streets of Brooklyn, this 30 something creative director made the move to the west coast some years ago and picked up surfing. As he delved more and more into the culture, he noticed that diversity was missing from the lineups and in the industry. So he decided to start the Bodega Boarder Crew podcast to help highlight the lack of diversity, while blending in his enjoyment of hip hop and urban culture. His episodes are packed with classic tracks and great conversations with some of some of surfing’s greatest counterculture figures. We had the great opportunity to sit down with Alex at the infamous Speedy Romeo’s in Fort Greene to discuss his beginnings and his thoughts on the current state of surfing.

11 Jul 2018Ep. 62: Mösco : Artist and Beach Warrior for Rockaways00:51:45
Mösco came to NYC in the late 90s as a skater and graffiti artist. Sand in teeth from Zicatela he sought a new home to surf, so he looked at the subway map and saw that the A train went to the beach. Mösco has been making the commute to Rockaway ever since. We talk about his life's pursuit to make the beach cleaner and safer with his work with Surfrider Foundation and his public art. We also discuss the challenges of communicating environmental problems even to those most affected; and why he loves the neighborhood of Arverne so much. Mösco's exhibition of paintings entitled "De Noche" / "At Night" will be at Head Hi this weekend.

18 Jul 2018Ep. 63: Smartfin Brings Science Inside Your Next Barrel00:56:54
Scientist and surfer Tyler Cyronack of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Ca shares the magic behind the Smartfin: a Future fin loaded with sensors that record water temperature and GPS data. Tyler studies the chemistry of coral reef environments and he looks forward to fellow surfers capturing - while getting shacked - all that hyper-localized data that traditional instruments and techs could not step up to. Smartfin is still in Beta so you'll have to just listen to our show and wait to get your hands on one. https://www.surfrider.org/programs/smartfin

Also on the show, Tyler, the co-host, gives his rant on why Stand Up Paddle boarders should do their thing away from the crowds.

25 Jul 2018Ep. 64: Leah Dawson & Becky Mendoza of Changing Tides Foundation / 2018 Women's Surf Film Festival01:00:58
Big Wave Surfer Leah Dawson and Big Wave Surfer Attorney Becky Mendoza visited the north coast of the Dominican Republic with a team of other female wave stars who make up the Changing Tides Foundation. The team worked with a group of local girls who attend the Mariposa Foundation, an organization which aims to end generational poverty by educating and empowering young women. The first thing the girls learn to do is swim and some even surf. Leah Dawson made the film "Sameseas" about the trip in which she and her crew surfed 10 foot swell upon arrival, immediately demonstrating to the young students that women also belong in the lineup. We talk about there experience with Mariposa Foundation and how surf and environmental education are pathways to leadership for these kids. "Sameseas" will be featured in 2018 NY Women's Surf Film Festival which launches July 27th at Rockaway Beach Surf Club and August 3rd at Montauk Beach House. Davina Grincevicius founder and organizer of the festival joins us to preview the films and what's evolved six years in.

26 Sep 2018Ep. 68: Jen Poyant of Zig Zag podcast and why surfing and Blockchain are integral to new gig01:09:56
Jen Poyant was winning at New York Public Radio. She was Executive Producer of WNYC Studios and launched the hit shows "2 Dope Queens" and "Note to Self". After the institution fell into its own #MeToo scandal and mismanagement the simmering burn to work for herself only became hotter. So like all good start-up founders, Jen and "Note To Self" host Manoush Zomorodi met at Le Pain Quotidian and plotted the launch of their company Stable Genius Productions. They received a grant made of cryptocurrency and quickly entered the universe of Blockchain and there was no turning back. Jen and Manoush's podcast Zig Zag documents this journey. Season 2 launches October 11th. We talk to Jen about what she's learned since the leap and how her need to surf was part of the deal when launching this new endeavor. 04 Oct 2018Ep.69: Kevin Miller previews The 2018 Florida Surf Film Fest, Matt McGregor-Mento circles L.I. in a hacked kayak-sailboat01:09:23
Kevin Miller co-founder and director of the Florida Surf Film Festival talks about why mounting an annual and quarterly non-profit film fest is best done when you are a CPA. The film fest is one of the sport's best and the line-up of jurists is a whose-who in surf journalism. Kevin tells us why he loves the Shorts and is excited about the the Zimbalist brothers' (ESPN's 30 for 30) ode to 90s surf gods, "Momentum Generation" one of the best docs of the year. Head down to New Smyrna Beach on November 9th & 10th to see these films. Later in the show the It Doesn't Not Work shaper series continues with tinkerer and madmen Matt McGregor-Mento, a self-proclaimed frustrated product designer who built a fold up kayak sailboat from hardware store parts to then circumnavigate Long Island. This show was broadcast live from Milly's Pizza in Bushwick. The power was out at the studio that night. https://floridasurffilmfestival.com/ Music credits: Soft and Furious

We speak to Chris about his company Shaper Studios which offers workshops on board design and craft all the while creating community in cities around the world. We get into the challenges of making a buck in the board business, why Vancouver (six hours and a ferry away from surf) was the perfect spot to expand his business, and the emergence of women shapers though his classes. 25 Oct 2018Ep. 72: Big Wave Lenswoman Jianca Lazarus Live at Asbury Park Yacht Club00:30:49
As early as she can remember Jianca Lazarus saw the world as if through the lens of a camera. Just as soon as got one in her hands Jianca jumped into a decades long career documenting the extremes of the natural world and human experience. At a live taping at Asbury Park Yacht Club the Changing Tides Foundation co-founder brings us into the intimacy of documenting sailer-adventurer Liz Clark one-on-one in the middle of the Pacific, the raw power of paddling into historically XXL waves off the Dominican Republic, and a consideration on leaving South Africa alone at age 17 to make it in the Big Apple. Asbury Park shaper Jon Oppito of Rozbern and TrimCraft Surf designs boards with the steep barrels of his native Jersey in mind. In the second half of our live show at Asbury Park Yacht Club organized by Headland Collective Oppito reveals how winter storms and local sandbars influence his shapes. 13 Nov 2018Ep. 74: Matt Roar Surfs on Mats, Writes Books, Draws and Plays Awesome Music01:08:18
When we invited our guest Matt L. Roar of IG's @matsurfingsocietyofny our intent was to learn about the nuances of getting majorly barreled on an inflation device that looks like a pillow. We got all that but we were not expecting our guest to share his life of non-stop creative output most recently with the band Golden West Service, his lines of poetry and a forthcoming book that deals with friendship, male identity and intimacy. And yes, we get into the problem with sexism in surf. It's a deep episode. Tune in. Music credit: Golden West Service goldenwestservice.bandcamp.com/

Lincoln cut his teeth early with film legend Taylor Steele and has gone on to build a strong portfolio of commercial and artistic short films. We talk with both of these young Aussie creatives about the changing landscape of surf film, why a good story always carries the day, and what kind of film they would make with 20 mil of FU money.
