Portrait photographer Jair Bortoleto sits down for a deep and candid interview with Tyler Breuer at Brooklyn's Head-Hi Gallery. The former editor of Surfer's Journal Brazil unpacks that nation's surf history and culture, as well as the effect of Brazil's cult of soccer stardom on the crafting of Gabriel Medina. In 2011, Tyler sat down with Jamie Brisick, writer, former editor of Surfing Magazine, former pro surfer and one of surfing's great storytellers. David Dowd cut his teeth working at a surf shop in Long Beach Island at the ripe age of 10 years. He eventually went on to own and operate Division East Skate Shop in Montclair, NJ for over 13 years. His shop became a focal point for skate culture within that community. Division East had to shut its doors in 2012 at a time of upheaval in the skate and surf industry. Surfboard purveyor, Brooklyn building tycoon, creator of X-Dreem clothing company, and proprietor of the Inhumane store in SoHo, Davo is a restless man of many projects. He shares with Ben and Tyler hilarious anecdotes of a surf mission in Baja that was actually a Christian charity Mission and what it was like to gatecrash Roseland Ballroom in the 90s to push t-shirts on sweaty rockstars. Steven Bedford Brown is as local as you can get in the Hampton Bays area.
He started surfing around twelve years old, riding over the Ponquogue bridge year round with a few buddies. He grew up in a rigid pecking order that taught grommets respect and to protect their local spots. Since the late 1950s women have been charging in the big wave club but have not received the proper respect, ability to compete, or equal prize money as their male counterparts. Photographer Chris St. Lawrence had just started his career in surf photography when he heard that waves can get a little big in a small town in Portugal. That was enough for him to jump on a plane to Nazaré and set up his lens among the pro pool of photographers to watch giants detonate. His scenes of winter surf back home earned Chris two awards at the 2019 Clifbar Cold Shot challenge. He recounts shooting sea smoke at dawn while his fingers froze and living through his dad's indictment and incarceration.

The Valpo Surf Project support education, language development, and good old fashion confidence building while surfing for the young people of Valparaíso, Chile. Co-Founder Jon Steuber conceived of the project while on his college semester abroad visiting the beautiful port city that poet Pablo Neruda called home. Ten years later Jon and a team of staff and volunteers have build a highly effective education and risk intervention program which works with hundreds of kids a year.

From January to April photographers from Maine to OBX and across to the Great Lakes braved the elements to shoot the best image of winter surf in order to compete in the Clifbar Cold Shot Challenge 3.0. Last week at a gallery on the L.E.S. Clifbar and NYsea hosted an exhibition of the finalists photos smartly printed and framed. Awards were bestowed to top empty wave and surfer categories. We spoke with Jurists Emmy Award winner and filmmaker legend Taylor Steele, NY Surf Photo Giant Mike Nelson, and one grom contestant Laird French who drove down from R.I. for the show. Best friends Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman packed up their van and surfed their way down from Canada to Baja California. They took the ferry to the mainland and their dream trip ends in tragedy. LA based reporter Jason McGahan brings us details from the chilling tale he wrote for Men's Journal about two surf buddies from Australia brutally murdered on the "Highway of Death" in Sinaloa, Mexico. Jason traveled to Sinaloa and spoke with the accused murders, and those who saw the friends last before their remains were found in their torched van.

It's an odd thing for surfers to enjoy the bliss of local groundswell while watching from afar the havoc that same storm drops upon another state. This week we hear two sides of Hurricane Irma. Alex and Danielle Nunez call in from a car speakerphone to share their experiences surviving the storm in South Florida where they have been without power and running water for a few days. Later in the show, I give a snap shot of that same storm's reach in New York which inspired any local with a board to use the word 'epic' and 'perfect'.

Matt Warshaw is the humble keeper of The Encyclopedia of Surfing. He has devoted his life to preserving the historical account of surf culture and lore. He grew up as a Z-boy and even finished a respectable 43rd on the World Tour back in the early 80's. He became an editor at Surfer Magazine and wrote tons of books on surfing. He's smart, articulate and very thoughtful. Our conversation wanders from the from philosophical to the hard truths we face as surfers. His life's project, The Encyclopedia of Surfing (EOS), is a gift to surfers around the world. It's a knowledge base that all can draw from and find inspiration. Unfortunately, it can be expensive maintaining such megalith of a website, and Matt has found himself at a crossroads. In the first episode of Swell Season Surf Radio for 2018, we have a very special interview that was conducted in 2012. Co-Host, Tyler Breuer, had the fortunate opportunity to Interview Tom Curren and the late Sonny Miller in front of a live audience in 2012. The event was a fundraiser for Hurricane Sandy Relief and was truly a special evening. It is the only recorded interview with Tom and Sonny. It would also be their last interview together as Sonny had passed away a year later. This interview took place following the first ever theater screening of "Searching For Tom Curren" and the crowd was stoked! In 1974 Tony Corley wrote an open letter to Surfer Magazine calling out fellow black surfers to represent and get to know each other. In response, he received warm support but also a racist threat. A year later he founded the Black Surfing Association which has been bringing black surfers together in celebration of waves in Central and Southern California for 43 years. Inspired by this work, Rockaway's Louis Harris started offering free surf lessons in 2016 to any kid who wanted to jump in. We talk about perceptions of who can and can't surf, the barriers of access to stoke, and the black surfing pioneer Nick Gabaldon, who paddled 12 miles across segregation barriers to ride Malibu.

An underwater natural gas pipeline running from New Jersey into Rockaway, Queens is under review right now. The pipeline owner and operator Williams Transco declined come on-air to comment. We were happy however that Paul McCay, a spokesperson and researcher at Interstate Natural Gas Association of America, lent his voice on industry safety mechanisms and the reasons why pipelines are dependable and environmentally efficient. Noelle Picone of Surfrider Foundation returns to discuss why the pipeline is a safety hazard and a threat to the environment. This topic is relevant to us all: surfers, beach visitors and anybody who expects gas to come out of a stove or heat a boiler.

On April 26th residents of Rockaway and New Jersey, city surfers, and others gathered at a Best Western in Brooklyn to voice their opinions on a proposed natural gas pipeline that would extend from Pennsylvania, through New Jersey and under the Raritan and New York Bays. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approval authority of pipelines and invited the public to speak to the agency, the Army Corp of Engineers and a contractor about the proposed Williams Company project. On a balmy May Tuesday at Union Pool in Brooklyn, the 2nd annual Clif Bar Cold Shot Challenge awarded cash and prizes to the best photography taken from land, air and sea this winter. The contest started in freezing and dark January and ran through a procession of record size and conditions of blizzards, named winter storms, and Nor' Easters that pounded the the East Coast the first four months of 2018. All of these storms were tackled by core winter chargers and documenting them were hundreds of photographers from the Outer Banks to Maine. NYSEA Collective invited all to submit their nastiest and most beautiful to be posted online and judged by the public and professionals.

Victor Lucia studied fishing culture in college and realized that the NYC fishing community was deep but disconnected. In response he launched Brooklyn Fishing Club in order to connect city anglers and help them get on top of fish. The club, now in the hundreds, has evolved into a take no prisoners crew who patrol the most unexpected fishing ground, like the East River and a lake in Central Park. Mösco came to NYC in the late 90s as a skater and graffiti artist. Sand in teeth from Zicatela he sought a new home to surf, so he looked at the subway map and saw that the A train went to the beach. Mösco has been making the commute to Rockaway ever since. We talk about his life's pursuit to make the beach cleaner and safer with his work with Surfrider Foundation and his public art. Scientist and surfer Tyler Cyronack of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Ca shares the magic behind the Smartfin: a Future fin loaded with sensors that record water temperature and GPS data. Big Wave Surfer Leah Dawson and Big Wave Surfer Attorney Becky Mendoza visited the north coast of the Dominican Republic with a team of other female wave stars who make up the Changing Tides Foundation. The team worked with a group of local girls who attend the Mariposa Foundation, an organization which aims to end generational poverty by educating and empowering young women. The first thing the girls learn to do is swim and some even surf. Leah Dawson made the film "Sameseas" about the trip in which she and her crew surfed 10 foot swell upon arrival, immediately demonstrating to the young students that women also belong in the lineup. We talk about there experience with Mariposa Foundation and how surf and environmental education are pathways to leadership for these kids. "Sameseas" will be featured in 2018 NY Women's Surf Film Festival which launches July 27th at Rockaway Beach Surf Club and August 3rd at Montauk Beach House. Davina Grincevicius founder and organizer of the festival joins us to preview the films and what's evolved six years in.

In its 5th year, IDNW hosts professional shapers and tinkerers alike to share their most boundary breaking and bizarre water craft creations. We preview the event with forward looking shaper Kyle Black and show organizer and hosts J Scott and Lois Klossner. We also look back to this day 17 years ago when Hurricane Erin pumped surf while the city was under attack.

Professional shapers and backyard tinkerers took over Rockaway Beach Surf Club last weekend for the 5th Edition of the experimental water craft symposium: It Doesn't Not Work. Swell Season spoke with several designers one on one, including Johnny Borbone and Grace Moon. Tyler and Ben also moderated a panel discussion with Chris Clark of Shapers Studios, Dan O'hara of Solid Surf, and Ron Shine of Board Porn TV. Pressing questions like: Do shapers charge enough? Jen Poyant was winning at New York Public Radio. She was Executive Producer of WNYC Studios and launched the hit shows "2 Dope Queens" and "Note to Self". After the institution fell into its own #MeToo scandal and mismanagement the simmering burn to work for herself only became hotter. So like all good start-up founders, Jen and "Note To Self" host Manoush Zomorodi met at Le Pain Quotidian and plotted the launch of their company Stable Genius Productions. They received a grant made of cryptocurrency and quickly entered the universe of Blockchain and there was no turning back. Jen and Manoush's podcast Zig Zag documents this journey. Kevin Miller co-founder and director of the Florida Surf Film Festival talks about why mounting an annual and quarterly non-profit film fest is best done when you are a CPA. The film fest is one of the sport's best and the line-up of jurists is a whose-who in surf journalism. Kevin tells us why he loves the Shorts and is excited about the the Zimbalist brothers' (ESPN's 30 for 30) ode to 90s surf gods, "Momentum Generation" one of the best docs of the year. Jonathan Alcock is a high end wood furniture maker who took a busman's holiday to learn how to build a wooden surfboard. Matthew Schenning is an artist who found a surf school foamie in the trash and hacked a swallow tail in it, painted the NASA worm logo it and vowed to tinker with it until the foam can't be surfed. Filmmakers Lincoln Caplice and Stefan Hunt messed around with cameras together as kids. They now have real deal grown-up careers in art and film. Stefan made waves in 2006 when he filmed his journey surfing all 50 states across the U.S, and more recently, has explored how we understand our demise in his immersive project "We're all Going to Die". Lincoln cut his teeth early with film legend Taylor Steele and has gone on to build a strong portfolio of commercial and artistic short films. We talk with both of these young Aussie creatives about the changing landscape of surf film, why a good story always carries the day, and what kind of film they would make with 20 mil of FU money.
