We kicked off the year with a fascinating interview featuring James Ellsmoor, co-founder of Solar Head of State. Corey Miller joined us to debunk myths about installing EV chargers for businesses and multi-family parking spaces, an increasingly relevant topic as electric vehicles become more prevalent.

In February, the conversation shifted to food waste prevention with hospitality veteran Ken Daughtery. We also welcomed Dr. Megan Morikawa, Global Sustainability Director at Iberostar, who shared Iberostar’s goals of achieving zero waste by 2025 and carbon neutrality by 2030. February also featured eco-tourism pioneer Costas Christ, who took us on a 30-year journey of developing and championing the concept of sustainable tourism, sparking a global movement.

Liesel van Zyl from Go2Africa, explored how conservation-focused safaris are changing the way people travel and expanding horizons for eco-conscious tourism. Glenn Haussman discussed how sustainability and profitability can coexist. Meanwhile, the Waldorf Astoria Seychelles’ General Manager, Elias Pertoft, showcased the resort’s sustainability practices, including its 95% solar power reliance and in-house produce farming, setting a benchmark for luxury eco-tourism.

The Caribbean took center stage with Gregor Nassief, Caribbean Hotelier of the Year, who shared his journey in developing Secret Bay, Dominica’s first sustainable luxury resort. In June, Chalana Perera transported us to Sri Lanka, highlighting his  regenerative tourism practices that prioritize both people and the planet.

Kevin Carey discussed the groundbreaking collaboration between AHLA and Green Key Global, aimed at standardizing green initiatives across the industry. Behavioral psychologist Milena S. Nikolova explained how her company, Behavior Smart, uses psychological insights to align guest satisfaction with sustainability goals. 

The Fall brought conversations on inclusivity and innovation. Meredith Marin, founder of Vegan Hospitality, discussed the rising demand for plant-based dining and how hotels can cater to vegan guests without compromising their culinary creativity. Sarah Dandashy of “Ask a Concierge” shared her journey of blending hospitality expertise with media, while Anna Blue, President of the AHLA Foundation’s Forward Initiative, spoke about celebrating and elevating women in hospitality. Additionally, Jen Collins of Procure Impact shared her transition from basketball to social impact in hospitality finance.

By the end of 2024, we explored the global impacts of sustainable practices. Dr. Bijan Khazai of Risklayer GMBH and Hotel Resilient discussed crisis preparedness for natural disasters and pandemics in the hospitality sector. David Leventhal inspired us with strategies for driving profitability through regenerative tourism, while Molly Laycob of USTOA emphasized the importance of partnerships in promoting responsible travel. Finally, Dr. Keenan Adams wrapped up the year by showcasing Puerto Rico’s regenerative tourism initiatives.

Since 2017, 4ocean’s professional, full-time captains and crews have removed over 40 million pounds of plastic pollution from the world’s ocean, rivers, and coastlines.

4ocean has built a vibrant lifestyle brand with a digital network of over 25m active followers enabling campaigns to reach billions of hearts and minds who can help 4ocean address the ocean plastic crisis. 

Mr. Lighton works with philanthropists, foundations, and corporations to significantly scale 4ocean’s local and global clean up operations, with a bold goal to exceed over 100m pounds of plastic pulled in the next five years.

Mr. Lighton is the immediate past CEO of SeaLegacy, a global nonprofit recognized for their award-winning advocacy campaigns that resulted in the significant expansion of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) which are critical to restoring and re-wilding the ocean.

Prior to SeaLegacy Mr. Lighton spent nearly ten-years as President & CEO of Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) where he worked with the community to transform the center’s visibility, visitation, and conservation impact, repositioning the center into one of Florida’s most visited and respected scientific and cultural facilities.
