08 Jun 2020 | Stand up paddle in London with Paul Hyman | 00:46:07
This week we are celebrating Paul Hyman's ten year old mission to get Londoners on the water. There are almost 9 million of you and so many are enjoying the waterways that surround the capital of the United Kingdom. Many have engaged in the cleanups, races, relays and adventure trips that Paul has been behind. We discuss all the events that he has initiated and supported over the years both in London and down in Sardinia, Slovenia and his important work in India. The biggest shock to me was that Paul hasn't ever visited Portugal! Hopefully we can rectify that in the near future. Enjoy the show and if you're ever in London, look Paul up at https://www.active360.co.uk/ Mentioned in this episode: Hutch Sup Wear - Final Sale - 50% Off Everything Here After 10 years, the original stand-up paddleboarding clothing brand, Hutch SUP Wear, is closing its doors for good. 18 Jan 2021 | Spike Reid and his Winter SUP Adventure {Re-broadcast} | 00:34:18
Before we pick up again next week with Season 3, we're sharing this episode, first broadcast back in 2015 with Spike Reid. Spike's been a real friend to the podcast and if you enjoy this episode then also check out the episode he recorded this year about his expedition down the Ganges, here. In 2015 Spike Reid, crossed England, coast to coast, by stand up paddle board. Spike is no stranger to adventure, having worked at the Royal Geographic Society for several years, which gave him the chance to rub shoulders with such legendary explorers as Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Already a qualified mountain leader and worldwide adventurer, his encounter at the Society with Dave Cornthwaite (who paddled the length of the Mississippi) led to him to join a team who circumnavigated Martinique on stand up paddle boards. Spike has always travelled across the world in search of adventure, however in recent years he has become a leading champion of local adventures, hence his recent crossing of England. In this fascinating chat, Spike talks through his paddle board adventures and inspires us to follow his example by adventuring locally. He also he covers useful information for aspiring adventurers including his approach to adventure kit selection and how to keep it lightweight. 06 Sep 2021 | My Trans-Atlantic SUP Crossing - with Chris Bertish | 00:32:42
This week we're proud to feature Speaker, Author, Filmmaker, Conservationist and Ocean Pioneer, Chris Bertish. Chris has scored a number of incredible achievements, including his legendary victory at Mavericks, the big wave Californian surf break. In this interview we talk about his record-breaking 2016 crossing of the Atlantic by SUP which is captured in his newly released documentary 'Last Known Coordinates'. We were able to grab some time with Chris, speaking to him from his family beach house in South Africa. Despite the odd loss of signal, we managed to capture a fascinating interview which showcased his uncompromising attitude and methodical approach, which has propelled Chris to so many epic achievements. We talk about how to push your comfort zone and adaptability, being comfortable with change and not just surviving but thriving despite managing difficult and changing environments. While we don't personally expect to be paddling the Atlantic anytime soon, we hope that this interview will give you the everyday inspiration to keep going, embrace spending time outside your comfort zone and really go all in for your passion, whatever it is. Chris's next challenge is to wing-foil the Pacific in 2022 in his Transpac project making the first carbon neutral crossing from California to Hawaii and crossing 2750 miles of open ocean. 11 Jan 2021 | Kai Lenny - Iconic Waterman and SUP Superstar {Re-broadcast} | 00:30:23
This episode is a re-broadcast and was originally recorded way back in 2015. We're making some major changes here at SUPfm and before we come back with the second half of Season Three we're taking you all the way back to our first season, where Nick got to chat to the ever impressive Kai Lenny. Kai is a down to earth guy despite growing up at the centre of the surfing world at his home in Hawaii. All the greats, Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama and Robby Naish would stop by his house on a Friday for a barbecue with his dad. One day (when he was 16 years old) they invited him to foil surf at Jaws. He’s paddled Molokai many times, won stand up paddle world titles and surfed Jaws when it’s huge. He is right up there with the best, at whatever water sport he is taking part in. Kai talks about his training, his mentors and the attention given to his confrontation with Connor Baxter at the much missed Battle of The Paddle event 2014 The wonderful thing about talking with Kai Lenny is that he is clearly grateful for what he has achieved and is proud to share the love of his sport with whoever he meets. It’s also great to see him taking time out to meet and inspire the local kids wherever he paddles. Kai Lenny has created the Positively Kai Foundation which promotes ocean safety and youth development education. It’s a great commitment to the community with an objective to set up training clinics to introduce kids to water sports wherever they are. The chat ended early due to some Skype problems, but we hope you’ll enjoy listening to one of the sport’s top talents, because we really enjoyed talking to him. We talked briefly about his time surfing Jaws. This video takes you with him as he glides down the face of one of the world’s most powerful forces. 03 Apr 2015 | 01. Welcome to SUPfm | 00:29:44
In the first ever session, Nick and Simon chat about who they are, their background, their passion for stand up paddle boarding and their podcast mission. Nick has spent much of his career in front of a keyboard, but threw it all in to run a SUP school in the Algarve, Portugal. SUP has reconnected Nick with his old self, who was a river guide and a ranger in South Africa. Simon was a dry land sportsman desperately looking for a replacement for his first sporting passion of rugby. Leaving the London rat race for the south coast of the UK he first discovered the water and then SUP. Now his hunt is over. Correction : Since recording this session we have come across two great podcasts for the SUP community which we would like to recognize. First Leslie Kolovich’s long standing and excellent SUP Radio Show and another being Stoke Radio SUP with Darian & the very funny Paddle Guy, we recommend both of them. The SUPfm podcastThis podcast is focused on spreading the value of SUP across the globe and providing inspiration and advice to all levels of paddle boarders, from those about to take it up, to experienced racers and adventurers. 21 Dec 2020 | Holiday Highlights – Fiona Wylde, Lizzie Carr and Maddi Leblanc | 00:56:06
As we enter the holiday season, it gives us the opportunity to look back at 2020 and revisit some of the highlights from our interviews. While 2020 was a year to forget, it was also a time which sharpened our focus on what was important in life, and for us, returning to the podcast was something which provided some much needed distraction at a very challenging time. We want to sent a big 'thank you' to all our guests who joined us over the 10 months and who have all provided us (and hopefully you, the listeners) with some distraction and inspiration, which will help you with your paddling journeys in 2021. We've chatted to a number of incredible women paddlers this year, and in this episode we feature three of them, with some best bits from interviews in Season Two. First we speak to Fiona Wylde, champion racer and surfer who has succeeded as a top athlete despite being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Second we have some highlights from Lizzie Carr's chat. As a cancer survivor, Lizzie has made a number of brave decisions starting with throwing in her corporate job and going on a number of adventures to highlight the state of our oceans and inland waterways. Finally we have Canadian Maddi LeBlanc, top level racer, enviromentalist, academic, instructor and winner of the top worldwide award, Woman Of The Year, from SUP Connect in 2020. All the full episodes are still available to listen to for free, alongside all our other episodes from 2020 We'd like to give our biggest thanks to you, our listeners for all your support this year and for your active involvement in the show. 26 Jul 2021 | SUP Innovation and the Environment - With Starboard Founder Svein Rasmussen | 00:49:25
In any sport there are leaders, who strive for improvement and those who follow in their wake. When it was first founded, Starboard was an upstart company in a world of large well-established windsurf brands. 18 May 2020 | Fiona Wylde Chats About Life as a Stand up Paddle Professional | 00:50:40
Fiona Wylde grew up in Hood River with a large portion of her childhood spent down in Mexico. The only child of what seems like super cool parents, she kicked off her water sports career with windsurfing and jumped on a SUP at the age of 12. When she was 18 and really kicking off her career she was suddenly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. She pursued professional paddle boarding in the face of a radical change of her lifestyle, including multiple "selfie injections" per day and a whole new blood sugar monitoring programme. She talks about Diabetes for what it is, just another hurdle to overcome and she inspired me with her genuine zest for life and fun character. We talk about the APP World Tour, is it sustainable to be a pro, all her accolades (actually these definitely are not ALL of them):
It was a fun conversation and we look forward to keep in touch with Fiona in the future. 11 Oct 2021 | Adventuring and Instructing - With WSA's Ben Longhurst | 00:57:04
In this episode we feature Ben Longhurst, the Technical Director of the innovative (and now extinct) UK organisation, The Water Skills Academy (WSA). Water Skills Academy cover a number of bases … they run expeditions and SUP holidays across the world, they run SUP industry events and in person events to inspire and keep paddlers informed and they were particularly active during the initial UK lockdowns with webinars...which certainly kept morale up when we couldn't get onto the water WSA's core mission is to offer courses to build skills and certify instructors for adventure guiding, surfing, lifesaving and a number of other specialisms. The topic of instructors isn’t something which we’ve covered before on the podcast, and while there are some clear benefits to getting coached, whatever your level, there are also real benefits to becoming an instructor, because it's fun particularly introducing people into the sport. This week Nick chats with real-life mermaid Jodelle who is based in the mid west, USA. Addicted to water since a young age, Jodelle had an instant connection to stand up paddling from the second that she first stepped onto a board. Jodelle was a personal trainer and into nutrition and exercise as a way to optimise health and quickly recognised stand up paddle as the perfect vehicle to provide ”vitamin P” for people’s lives. Jodelle is sponsored by BIC after being talent spotted by the company and is known for developing the Stand Up Paddle TV video series on Youtube. In this interview Jodelle chats about:

05 Aug 2024 | Amazon Adventure - Stories from the River With Caz Dawson | 01:43:05
In this episode of the SUPfm podcast, we dive deep into the Amazon SUP Challenge—a gruelling 330km endurance paddle race through the heart of the Peruvian jungle. This journey is not just a test of physical strength and mental resilience but also a cultural immersion that brings paddlers close to the vibrant and resilient communities along the Amazon River. Simon chats with Caz Dawson (SUP Lass) and reflects on the immersive audio diary that Caz, Jonathan Gill, and Matthew Phillips put together as they braved the hot, humid, and treacherous conditions to become the first team to complete this year's Amazon Challenge. They share their awe-inspiring experiences, from wildlife encounters to navigating rapid waters. Beyond the race, the episode explores the meaningful engagement with local river communities. 05 Jun 2020 | SUP the Danube 3,000km along Europe's greatest river with Andy Bartlett | 00:49:41
If you looked at the map of Europe and began to ponder a stand up paddle board adventure, a blue streak would leap out at you. The Danube River commences it's 3,000 km journey in south western Germany and plunges down a racy course towards Munich but manages to weave in between Stuttgart and Munich before flowing through Austria, taking in Vienna before assuming the mantle of a border between Slovakia and Hungary. Turning south just before Budapest the "Blue Danube" coasts down through Serbia and Romania before emptying into the Black Sea. What a ride! Andy Bartlett recounts his trip along this magnificent water course, and inspires us to get on a board and complete an adventure, no matter how small or large it is. We also touch on many other fun and epic projects he has achieved to date but the over-riding message here is "get on the water". Plan your trip now! Andy is an engaging speaker and I personally found him extremely entertaining and easy to chat to. 10 Jul 2015 | Kai Lenny, Stand Up Paddle SUPer Hero | 00:30:23
This week Nick chats with three time World Champion stand up paddler Kai Lenny. He’s paddled Molokai seven times, won three stand up paddle world titles, surfed Jaws when it’s huge. He is right up there with the best, at whatever water sport he is taking part in. Kai talks about his training, his mentors and the attention given to his confrontation with Connor Baxter at the BOP 2014 The wonderful thing about talking with Kai Lenny is that he is clearly grateful for what he has achieved and is proud to share the love of his sport with whoever he meets. Within each category (inflatable and hard board) you have subsets including : All rounder, Tourer, Race, Downwind and Surf sups. * POINT 2 * Inflatable: PROS If storage space is limited then the isup or inflatable is a great option. 26 Oct 2020 | My Journey to Revitalize the Original SUP Magazine – Standup Journal -Evelyn O'Doherty | 00:51:03
Let's face it, taking over a magazine in the face of all the digital content proliferating our screens these days is a tough task. Evelyn O'Doherty relates the story of how she came to be at the forefront of stand up paddle's "Stand Up Journal". It certainly takes different thinking and some dogged determination to bring a beautiful coffee table publication into our homes every season (they release four issues a year). I chat to her about her stand up paddle origins way back in 2007/2008, her first competition in the Caribbean and the thriving community of paddlers in the north east of the USA. 03 Jul 2020 | Cleaning The Potomac - SUP Garbage Man | 00:46:20
As we start plastic-free July, we've got the perfect episode to get you fired up! Joe is an ex-surfer who got the stand-up paddle bug in a big way. His refusal to accept the volumes of trash which found their way into his stretch of the Potomac, turned into a daily ritual. Every day he gets onto the water using an over sized paddle-board to clear as much garbage as he can from the water. Alongside the plastic bottles and food packaging, he has discovered some cumbersome, unusual and bizarre items, which he's had to tow, push or stack to get off the water. Along the way he has won recognition and an award from the French Government for his efforts. Modest, unassuming, but hugely committed, Joe still loves his fix of 'blue-mind' and the chance to experience the beauty of the river, despite the less glamorous reality of making the water a better place. 17 Jul 2020 | Using Stand Up Paddle to Push Back The Plastic Tide | 00:49:34
Originally from New York, Christian Shaw paddles out of Santa Cruz, California and is a water-man with a huge focus on stand up paddling. He's a SUP Surfer, whitewater paddler and a competitor at races including the 11 cities...he certainly rolls up his sleeves and gets involved. After a conference in 2014, Christian and fellow environmentalists were inspired to set up Plastic Tides , an organisation with the goal "to inspire action toward a plastic-free future, through adventure, education and youth empowerment". It's a noble goal and one that they've been doing extremely effectively. We discuss how he mixed his anti-plastic ambitions with stand up paddle and how well the sport has served as a platform to deliver the message. Plastic has some frightening statistics. In 2015 381 million tonnes of plastic was created worldwide, 19.5% of which was recycled, 25.5% incinerated and 55% discarded. 8 million tonnes of plastic finds its way into the ocean every year and there are a ton more statistics here: https://ourworldindata.org/plastic-pollution Watch the film of Christian's SUP circumnavigation of Bermuda back in 2014 https://vimeo.com/129335820 The study results from his trip are posted on this study map https://www.adventurescientists.org/microplastics.html Since Bermuda, there have been many other trips and there are many more to come. 08 May 2020 | SUPing the Length of Britain - Cal Major | 00:50:11
Cal Major is the legend that set out to become the first ever human being to paddle the well trodden path between Lands End down south in Cornwall (right on the south western tip of England) and John O'Groats up at the North Western tip of Scotland. We talk about her trials, tribulations and the pure joy she endured along the way. Let's not mention pure exhaustion too. She also created a wonderful film which is available on Vimeo for a few bucks: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/vitaminsea Thanks for listening, we really do appreciate it. 23 Apr 2020 | Whitewater SUP on the Zambezi | 00:51:55
When Bertrand van der Berg called Nick from SUPfm back in 2016 to join him and his team to be the first people to SUP the Zambezi, he shuddered. Nick had been introduced to white water rafting on the Zambezi back in 1991 and subsequently became a river guide, so he knew what they were in for. He declined :) However, the team of 8 charged on and adopted a mission to save the Rhinos along the way. This really helped to focus their efforts and suddenly this was a much bigger thing, they needed to complete their mission of paddling all 25 rapids for the rhinos, not for selfish fun and a pat on the back as the first to do it (and obviously a footnote in history!). Listen to tales of grueling hardship and the ultimate exhilaration as these guys take stand up paddle on white water to the very limits. Further info about the project is on www.standup4rhinos.org and you can FOLLOW Bertrand on www.bertrandvanderberg.com --- Thanks to Chantelle Melzer for the photos. 04 Oct 2021 | How I Circumnavigated the UK by SUP - With Brendon Prince | 01:09:40
Brendon Prince makes a triumphant return to the show after his epic 4000km circumnavigation around mainland Britain, which has been covered by international and British news media. Brendon has broken a number of world records in the process and encountered the best and the worst of what the British coastline has to offer, and in this episode he talks about the experiences which shaped his trip including his 'interesting' encounter with Orcas. The purpose of his trip was to raise money to develop an app to engage school children and the public to teach water safety and ultimately reduce the number of drownings in the UK. For a coastal nation we are generally uneducated about water and the sea, and this app communicates the message to children (and adults) effectively through games, stories and interaction, which is a highly effective method.
