13 Feb 2021I dream of Cameras #501:02:12

Jeff and Gabe are back with another brilliant episode of I dream of cameras!

Topics this week include:

• it’s a new year, check your batteries! How to replace the obsolete PX625: the MR-9 adapter, the Weincell, the 675 + paulbg ring, etc. • wrongly valued cameras (Minoltas, Konicas and Mirandas are treated like trash; Mamiya/Sekor is garbage while Mamiya is a treasure; Pentax K1000 overvalued while ME Super is undervalued; Canon AE-1 over, EF and A-1 under; Olympus OM-1 way under, etc.) • autofocus / point and shoot - is it real photography? • does handheld metering make you more of a photographer? • plastic / toy / Lomo cameras • Polaroid, Instax, One Instant (a disaster), Polaroid Chocolate • expired film - what’s so great? • bulk loading • Spotlight: the cameras we each irrationally and indefensibly love (Hasselblad 553ELX, Canon EF) • Thanks to Fred Coury for the music and Keith Greenstein for the logos

13 Mar 2021I dream of Cameras #7 Deadly Sins01:03:17
The Seven Deadly Sins   Jeff and Gabe return to inspire all us sinners!   • pride: showing off, bringing an exotic camera to a photo walk or camera show, etc. - the antidote: extending a hand to new photographers (as opposed to snarking “go Google it” in Facebook groups)   • envy: camera envy - where does it get you? has it ever resulted in a good acquisition?   • lust: what’s your Grail Camera?   • sloth: letting cameras languish on the shelf - are pure shelf queens OK?   • wrath: getting angry at your gear - have you ever hit a camera?   • greed and gluttony: accumulating for the sake of same, and how to step away from it - the need for instant gratification - how to donate cameras (FPP school donation program), giving analog cameras to new parents, etc.   • finally: what we need isn’t new film cameras, but guys and gals who can repair the ones we have - scholarship?   • Thanks to Fred Coury for the music and Keith Greenstein for the logos

08 Apr 2023Grainsplaining #7 New Year Same Us (better late than never)00:45:31

Hello! We are back, two beautiful butterflies that have escaped the cocoon of January blues. We recorded this episode earlier last year, in the dark depths of a cold January season, and it is safe to say we weren’t feeling our best! In this episode we talk all about the highs and lows of a new year, and how to come out the other side of resolutions, new years goals and the constant pressure to be productive. We cover all sorts from balancing hobbies with work, gatekeeping in the photo industry, and those dreaded Kodak price increases- and how we can beat them. Join us for a chat about getting out of those downward spirals with creativity and the thing we all love most- film photography! Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and Twitter @grainsplaining @alexandra_heron @emmajlloyd_ and if you would like to get in touch email us at grainsplaining@gmail.com

03 Jun 2022I Dream of Cameras #33 Valentine’s Day01:03:20
The mailbag features talk of travel cameras, copy stands, and the allure of the Nikonos system. But the jewel of this episode is an interview with France-born, Dublin-based street shooter Valentine de Villemeur. Tune in for insights into her favorite cameras, her shooting style, and her development as a photographer.
  • John-Michael Mendizza’s copy stand solution: a koolehaoda rail
  • Looking for an inexpensive way to shoot Nikon glass? Check out the oft-neglected Nikonos system — you can score a body and two lenses for under $150!
  • Valentine de Villemeur interview — her website and Instagram
  • Finally: what’s up with Portra 400? We can’t find it anywhere!
14 Jun 2021I dream of Cameras #13The Purge (feat. Danielle Wrobleski)01:08:33
You’ve heard of Marie Kondo — meet Marie Nikondo! In this wildly entertaining episode, Jeff forces Gabe to remorselessly thin out his camera collection by posing the following questions:   1. What purpose does the camera fulfill? 2. Do I have a set home for this camera? 3. Am I showing enough gratitude toward the camera? 4. Does the camera spark joy?   After Guy With Too Many Cameras, we speak to Girl With Too Many Cameras, Danielle Wrobleski, a Milwaukee-based photographer who spotlights female shooters with the hashtag #WomenWithFilmWednesday. 11 Jan 2023Grainsplaining #6 Alex, NAS and The School of YouTube01:12:57

Happy New Year! We are back with a brand new (but old) episode, recorded at the end of last year and we cover A LOT, so buckle in! Recorded ahead of the launch of Alex’s fantastic campaign with NAS- the National Autistic Society, in this episode we chat about Alex’s latest photography project, “Now I Know”, where Alex photographed six incredible Autistic women and non-binary people, documenting their stories, in their words. It is a beautiful, moving campaign, and we can’t wait for you to learn all about it. In this episode Alex also tells us more about her story with autism, and how it has led her to where she is today. Of course it wouldn’t be Grainsplaining with some extra feminism chat, so we also cover smashing the patriarchy and similar issues. Alex has some top notch advice for those who want to break into the photography industry, so we hope this can be some fantastic motivation to kick off 2023 with! 06 Jan 2025OnlyFilms: Marta Arjona00:52:56

In this episode, Mandy (@mandyleft) talks with photographer and filmmaker Marta Arjona (@marjonablasco).

They began by discussing Marta's short films Dolors and Peaceful Wind. They also talked about using expired films and some of Marta's favorites.

Marta was the recent recipient of a community grant from Ilford for her project ePhemeral. The nature of dance is that a dancer will never move exactly the same twice, so each performance is unique. Capturing it on film makes it eternal.

They finished up with the reoccurring segments FFS (For Film's Sake) and PACS (Pleasing Analogue Camera Sounds) and Marta gave a shoutout to Cuarto Color Lab (@cuartocolorlab).

01 Oct 202235 minute meeting for 30/9/202200:32:33

This is how the 100th show on the feed appears. Not with a Bang but with a sad trombone sound and the faint smell of eggs. You're welcome.

As part of Sunny 16 Tower's ongoing commitment to transparency, bullsh#t, and transparent bullsh#t (from the deleted scenes of Star Trek IV) we've decided to release the audio from the monthly staff meeting which all contributors to the two S16 feeds are expected to attend in person.

Please set expectations appropriately, i.e. low.

Nope, lower than that...

14 Jun 2022I Dream of Cameras #34 Call Mr. Lee00:59:46
The jewel of this episode is our interview with Trev Lee, an excellent photographer and the social media voice of The Darkroom lab in San Clemente. But first!
  • Oskar Barnack’s 1923 0-series Leica sold at auction for $12 million
  • Gabe sold two Bronicas at LA Film Camera in Studio City
  • the return of The Thingy, a adapter which lets you replace the obsolete PX675 mercury battery with a cheap 675 zinc-air hearing-aid battery
  • how many cameras do you have loaded simultaneously?
  • an abbreviated mailbag!
  • our interview with Trev Lee:
    • trading his beloved Leica M5 for a Rolleiflex TLR from Gabe’s collection
    • which of his 20 cameras does he bring on a shoot?
    • the allure of the Nikon FM3a - how did he acquire one, how did it vault to the top of his list, and why is it so great?
    • black vs. chrome cameras
    • his favorite lens for the Nikon: the 40mm Voigtlander Ultron
    • the rest of his Nikon lens arsenal are all by Voigtländer! the 28mm Skopar, the 58mm Nokton, and the 90mm APO-Lanthar
    • are rising costs changing the hobby?
    • the Canon Rebel and Elan as good affordable starter cameras
    • are people printing more? what’s the value of a print?
    • and furthermore, what’s the emotional component of photography for him?
    • does working at a photography business siphon off some of the joy? how do you balance the demands of the job with your personal work?
    • the culture of The Darkroom, their dedication to customer service and his role as their social media manager
    • Trev’s website

21 Feb 2021A conversation with Rachel about difficult times01:31:16

This is not a podcast about photography, this is a podcast about Rachel and her life since the Summer of 2019.

Over the last 18 months, long time listeners to the Sunny 16 feed will have noticed that Rachel has not been present on the podcasts in the way she was before.

As our listeners are the best, and many people have asked after Rach and enquired about her wellbeing during this time, and more importantly because she's at a point where she feels able to talk about it, I virtually sat down with Rach to talk about her experiences over the last 18 months to explain her absences.

Please know going in that this conversation is about Rachel and her partner Adam's attempts to have a child through IVF, and part of that journey was loss, so if this is likely to be upsetting to you, you might not want to listen.

Thanks to everyone who's reached out to Rach and us over the last year with support and love, even though you didn't know what was up. The film photography community is one of the loveliest and most supportive collections of people out there. We always try to bring these values to our shows, and we hugely appreciate being a part of this awesome community

25 Oct 2024OnlyFilms: Bettina Bautista at Aire Street Darkroom00:51:58

In this episode of the @onlyfilmsproject podcast, Mandy (@mandyleft) chats with Bettina (@ysa.gb) as they work on prints at Aire Street Darkroom (@airestreetdarkroom). Bettina is a film photographer from Manchester who Mandy met on a @northwestfilmphoto walk.

They talk about Bettina’s early influences on film, camera preferences, using portraiture to change our personalities in approaching people, zines, and exhibitions. They also discussed their thoughts on fresh perspectives of familiar surroundings, femininity in photography, inspiration for subjects and subject matter and how Instagram has changed over the last few years.

Finally they share a Film Failure Story (FFS) that many will be able to relate to as well as touching on digital photography.

The mighty Jeff and Gabe return for another show of camera loving delights.

Topics this week include:

• Thanks to Fred Coury for the music and Keith Greenstein for the logos • Do you lend? Cameras you borrowed, then bought? • Cameras others love but you're just not interested in • Highly hyped, tried, didn't like • Fear of a large format • Falling in and out of love with cameras - it's like a romcom - how do you decide when to bail? • The most beautiful but horrible/unusable cameras (Pentacon Six, Kodak Medalist II) • Spotlight: your most despised camera you’ll never get rid of (Kodak Bantam Special, Robot Royal 24)

08 Mar 2024OnlyFilms: Catching Up with Emma Lloyd00:52:30

In this episode, Mandy (@mandyleft) catches up with Emma Lloyd (@emmajlloyd_).

They talked about Emma’s experiences with film in Australia since moving there last year.  Going on a photowalk with members of the film community in Adelaide, independent labs in Melbourne in general and specifically FilmNeverDie (@filmneverdie), what cameras she took, how much film, what she is photographing and the idea of bonding with people in a new country over film.

Then with March being Women’s History Month and the 8th being International Women’s Day (IWD), they talk about #sheheartsfilm which Emma started while she was working at Analogue Wonderland and current projects they have both planned to recognize and celebrate the month.

Emma is organizing a print sale to benefit women’s charities. Photographers can share prints on social media that they would like to sell along with the hashtag #IWDFrameTheGrain. People who are interested in purchasing the print can coordinate with the seller and do so by making a donation to a charity that benefits women. Follow the hashtag and the Grainsplaining IG account (@grainsplaining) for updates on the project.

Mandy would like to put together a zine with portraits of female film photographers. She’d like to make the portraits this year and put together the zine in time for International Women’s Day (8th of March) in 2025. Please get in touch if you would be willing to be one of her subjects.

19 Aug 2023On Location: Tips, Tricks and Traps Ep. 1 with Sam Knight00:20:46

Welcome to Tips, Tricks and Traps. A podcast series to help others learn from my own misguided and wayward journey through the wonders of film photography. What's special about me? Nothing, I'm just an average sort of amatuer photographer - looking to share experiences and thoughts about our fantastic shared passion, learn from and snigger at failures, salute success and hopefully stick with me.

Listen in to learn all about the marvelous film community that we love, how wonderful it is and what it can do for you and your creativity! … and a big life update from Emma! P.S. This was a spontaneous episode recorded on Emma’s phone, so apologies for the audio quality. 27 Mar 2024Grainsplaining #15 Can I have a hand check please? with @photoxcore_archive01:02:15

Hello and welcome back to Grainsplaining!

Today I sit down for a chat with my friend Holly @photoxcore_archive* Holly and I have both done some travelling with film recently. In this episode we discuss airport anxiety, the nightmare confusion of xray machines and our tips for travelling with film!

But don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom, we also talk about the joys of travelling with film: amazing labs, the film community we have met across the globe and why you shouldn’t be put off by the daunting task of airport security!

I’ve also recruited Holly to help with our #IWDFrameTheGrain Event. We talk more about the event, why you should get involved, and hopefully encourage you to take part.

Shout outs in the episode: @a_guskaart @kalimcmillan @imageplayground @darkroomkt @analoguephotoexhibition @sistahspace_ @rinkokawauchi

*NB I’m building a reputation for audio issues! Sorry guys but during this call I was interrupted by a rainstorm (recording in a tin shed doesn’t make the best audio). We also realised Holly’s headphones weren’t working after finishing our call! I’ve done my best to edit out the echo but there might be a few robotic sounds. Bare with me…

It’s Women’s Month and we have a special charity print fundraiser underway! Check out our instagram feed for the details, and enter your work into the print sale with the hashtag #IWDFrameTheGrain

13 Jul 2022I Dream of Cameras #36 Make It Wit Chu01:03:00
Jeff is on location! Gabe’s just back from the frozen north! And they still manage to find time for a rollicking conversation with photographer and YouTuber Chris Chu. Tune in for the fascinating result — we did indeed rollick!
  • Gabe’s adventure at Downtown Camera in Toronto with Jessica Devic
  • which camera(s!) Jeff decided to bring on his trip to Atlanta and the UK: Rollei 35 SE and Minox LX
  • Polaroid’s new Green Duochrome is great!
  • a moderate dip into our moldering mailbag, with more talk of travel cameras and bulk-loading Ektachrome
  • Our rollicking interview with Chris Chu:
    • his abrupt decision to abandon a computer science degree in San Francisco to pursue his crazy dream of a photography career in Los Angeles
    • his journey into film photography, starting with the Canon P
    • and then into medium format with the Pentax 645, the Mamiya RB67 Pro SD and the Mamiya RZ67
    • Chris tries to convince Jeff to get a Big Ugly Box medium-format camera
    • his favorite film stocks Portra 160 and Ektar 100
    • shooting color when you're color-blind
    • what fueled his growing camera-collecting addiction
    • ...but why no 35mm SLRs?
    • what he likes about the rangefinder shooting experience
    • zone focusing: setting a hyperfocal distance and training yourself to use it
    • camera bags — and how many cameras do you carry at once?
    • half-frame cameras: the half-a-cookie debate is reignited!
    • why own the same camera (Leica M6) in both chrome and black?
    • he's flirting with the Leica M-A - Jeff tries to save him by pitching the M3M2 and CL
    • how do you refrain from getting that next camera? — he doesn’t! he just bought a Hasselblad 501CM!
    • Gabe shows off his 500ELM, an impulse buy at B&H Photo — it’s the Leica M5 of the Hasselblad line
    • Jeff implores Chris to talk him out of the Hasselblad XPan… and he does! whaddya need it for? you have the Widelux!
    • if you have to give away all but one of your cameras, which would you keep? the RZ67!
    • Chris on YouTube and Instagram and his website
13 Jan 2021I dream of Cameras #301:01:13

Jeff Greenstein and Gabe Sachs return with episode 3 of their fabulous podcast. Topics this time out include:

• Lens collecting: is it exciting? • Flashes, pro and con • Camera bags, pro and con • Caps and straps and such - Jeff is anti neck straps and lens caps, pro wrist straps, belt clips and skylight filters • Ephemera: manuals, brochures, magazines, books • What are the best books on cameras? • Cameras in TV and movies: people hold them wrong, there’s a flash when there’s no flash on the camera, etc. • T-shirts, caps, pins - mention our imminent merch • Camera spotlight: Gabe’s choice (Zeiss Contarex Bullseye) • Camera spotlight: Jeff’s choice (Alpa 11si)

16 Sep 2022I Dream of Cameras #40 This Is 4001:01:06
  • thanks to the lords of Sunny 16, we now have our own podcast feed!
  • a lightning round to empty our prodigious mailbag - limit one sentence per email!
  • Gabe’s about to leave for New York Fashion Week - here's the final list of cameras he's bringing:
  • Gabe's kit for a portrait shoot with Kal Penn: the R5, the Q and the M10
  • to fund Gabe’s recent impulse buy of the Canon R5, he actually sold some stuff:
  • on the same trip, Jeff failed to unload a mint-in-box 90mm f2 Summicron ASPH with caps, case and original papers - any takers?
  • Jeff’s about to make another trip to Atlanta and KEH — last time, he looked at a ton of cool stuff (thanks Sam) and came away with a 35mm Nikkor for his SP rangefinder
  • this time he has his eye on a 35mm f2.8 PC-Nikkor tilt-shift lens to use with the XPan
  • Jeff’s recent impulse buy: a Konica Acom-1 a.k.a. Autoreflex TC - what is “automatic” exposure, and why do we judge those who use it?
  • the difference between shooting the Widelux (serendipitous) and the XPan (deliberate)
  • no cameras allowed at the Malibu Chili Cookoff, and no cameras on tripods in LA's public parks! wtf?
  • serial numbers - do you find them interesting? Jeff sure does!
  • Jeff used the Paterson System 4 with its babyish plastic developing reels.. and he loved it!
  • forty episodes in, what have we learned?

28 Jul 2022I Dream of Cameras #37 This Is the Day of the XPanding Man00:57:49
VERY SPECIAL EPISODE recapping Jeff’s absurd acquisition of a Hasselblad XPan, and more importantly, his trip to England and Wales to meet all four hosts of the Sunny 16 Podcast!
  • In our last episode, Chris Chu talked Jeff out of getting a Hasselblad XPan, so how did he end up impulsively buying one on his first day in London?
  • A magical trip to Camera City, the very same place where Jeff found his sacred Alpa 11si ten years ago.. and what should be on the shelf but an XPan?
  • And now, the circuit of the Sunnies…
  • An underdiscussed aspect of the XPan: the standard 45mm f/4 lens is incredible!
  • In other news… where’s all the film? And why’s the film we have so expensive?
  • Gabe has set up an on-deck circle of underused cameras…
  • …and has been snapping up photography books
  • Thought experiment: if the boys had to cut their collections down to only ten cameras, which would they choose?
  • Next episode, we tackle the prodigious mailbag!
28 Mar 2021On Film #7 Run Lola Run with Jeremiah Chechik01:01:00

22 Sep 2021I dream of Cameras #19 • Icons and Nikons01:10:11

An XL episode boasting two blockbuster features: Gabe’s recap of his adventures covering New York Fashion Week, followed by our survey of the esteemed camera marque known as Nikon.

• Gabe recounts shooting NYFW and the Met Gala • Jeff’s new acquisitions: a Canon P rangefinder… and (on the way) the Canon RF 50mm f1.4, the Japanese Summilux • And now: our Nikon show! • when did you become aware of Nikon, and what was your first? • Nikon rangefinders: the SP and its siblings • the Nikon/Canon wars of the ‘70s/'80s • evolution of the F: F2, F3… • why no more rangefinders? (till the S3 2000 and SP 2005 commemorative editions) • spurred by the OM-1, Nikon goes compact: the FM and FE series • the Nikkormat / Nikomat • the FM3a — their best ever? 1/4000 with no battery! • the coveted FM2/T Year of the Dog edition • consider the Nikonos — they’re so cheap! • countless point & shoot Nikons, APS cameras… • the 35Ti, which is not good! • favorite lenses (e.g. the 105mm f2.5) • one Nikon to rule them all: which would you choose?

Underexposed is back, with a perfect chat for Polaroid week! This time Rachel is joined by our very own Clare Marie Bailey, and the wonderful guest Carmen De Vos. Audio quality isn't great, but the conversation is well worth it regardless.

20 Mar 2024Grainsplaining #14 From the Archives: @cameragocamera on life with film00:31:14

In our second episode of the Grainsplaining from the archives series, Emma talks to Peggy AKA @cameragocamera! Peggy is the legend behind the cameragocamera blog, which has been running since November 2015!

Peggy effectively runs her own camera wiki, trying and reviewing cameras, and then sharing them with the film world for us to enjoy. Peggy’s blog exists as a diary of her life with film, including experiments, DIY fixes, home developing, re-skinning cameras, and more! It truly is a treasure trove of information.

Peggy shares her wisdom on buying cameras and staying organised with film, including how to store your negatives! This was a lovely and spontaneous chat, recorded with one of Emma’s favourite ladies in film- enjoy!

14 Nov 2022Digital Film Photography 001: It’s an amazing world00:45:44

We love to shoot film. We love to shoot digital. It’s an amazing world and photographic arts are a spectrum that includes dark boxes, glass, chemicals, plates, pinholes, sensors, EVFs and much more.

Christian and Ade are starting out on a journey to explore the spectrum of digital and film photography. It’s inclusive, light-hearted and hopefully fact-based 😀. Please join us!
