21 Feb 2022A Helvellyn Whiteout with John Barker01:02:28

John Barker has spent much of his life outdoors but only really did it for pleasure later on. After many years in the British armed forces, he now spends time outside for pleasure rather than daily beastings!

Like many of us, John captures his outdoors adventures on his camera phone and has created a big following through instagram  by sharing his images. He has a great eye for capturing the raw beauty of the outdoors and also often shares a glimpse of his legs!

A new year's tradition has been a jaunt up to Helvellyn for John, but one year, although the conditions were perfect one minute, the British mountain weather had other ideas and John found himself amidst a snow storm and unable to see where he was going. He tells us all about it!

Summit to Talk About has turned 1 and I would like to thank you all for your support and for listening. I hope I can continue to bring you many more inspirational guests in the future.

07 Mar 2022Dan Jones - Wild Camping00:53:30

Dan has been wild camping for 15 years. In this time he has honed his skills, knowledge and kit to (almost) perfection. Like many of us,Dan has enjoyed the process of trying new things and camping in different places but continues to learn and improve.

We chat about how he started in his pursuit for the perfect wild camping setup from humble beginnings of canvas tents and big weights in his pack to the ultralight approach he now has.

Dan loves an adventure and had plans to cross Lake Baikal pulling his pulk the whole way. His plans have changed and he'll now be hoping to cross Lake Winnipeg in Canada, an impressive 258 miles of ice and snow!

03 Apr 2022Russ Moorhouse - Sleeping with Wainwright01:06:54

Russ was a banker who read books about adventurers, adventurers who inspired him to want his very own epic adventure, not something that had been done many times, but something new and something he was good at.... sleeping!

Russ aka @amountainbivvi set out to camp on each of the 214 Wainwright's fells in the Lake District over the course of a year, enduring all that mother nature could throw at him through all 4 seasons and finishing with a world record - the most people camping out in a bivvy in one night!

Russ documented his connections with each of the mountains in his book 'Fell Asleep' which is available on Amazon now by clicking here.

17 Apr 2022The Hiking Household00:51:01

Laura enjoyed running and synchronised swimming. But when she started a family, getting 'that' buzz became difficult. Like many of us, she adapted her lifestyle in order to continue getting outside and to involve all the family. During lockdown, we were all restricted to local walks and this sparked the birth of The Hiking Household and Tikes Hikes - a walking group for parents and their children in Cumbria. Since then, it has grown into a fantastic online resource for family friendly walks in the Lake District.

We chat about how having little ones at home doesn't mean you can't get out to enjoy our great outdoors and Laura shares some great ideas for getting the kids outside and ways to make it fun for them.

21 Aug 2022The Pennine Way - Forty years Sixteen days01:18:40

In 1979 Chris Priest and Duncan Say were just youngsters with an ambitious idea to hike the Pennine Way. A practice hike over two days soon made them realise this wasn't a walk in the park and shouldn't be attempted with their 40lb packs! They had made all the necessary plans including coloring in their printed out maps and they set off through the peat bogs on their 268 mile adventure.

Fast forward to 2019, forty years later. Still good friends and hiking buddies, Chris hatched a plan to do it all again. Although reluctant, Duncan is a loyal friend and the Pennine Way was once more. They spent 16 days reliving their youth and making new memories along the way. Memories they have recorded in their book 'Forty years Sixteen days'.

We chat about the PW and all that has changed over the years including the terrain, the paths and their own perceptions.

04 Sep 2022Alex Foxfield - The Alps are calling01:08:05

Alex grew up in Cumbria. He left school and moved to Birmingham to attend university before moving to London to become a teacher. In the metropolis of the capital, he fell in love with the outdoors and began to wonder of far away adventurous places and soon found himself frequenting the Alps! This had planted a seed for Alex and he returned on many occasions to be amongst the alpine landscapes.

Alex joined the London Mountaineering club and is now the newly appointed president. We chat about the club and the sort of things you can expect from being a member. Alex is now a writer after leaving teaching behind and specialises in the outdoors. He has also recently become a father and we chat about this and the impact it has (or doesn't have) on getting out on adventures.

A few years later, living in the south and realising that she was surrounded by people living to work she had a change of heart and wanted to travel and have more adventure in her life. Lisa went through a break up with her partner and decided this was it. She went to Cornwall in pursuit of becoming an outdoors instructor. 19 Jan 2023Wild Camping on Dartmoor - The High Court Judgement00:37:46

In this special bonus episode, I'm joined by Mark aka Mullion Vagrant on Instagram to discuss the very important and hot topic of wild camping in Dartmoor since the High Court judgement on 13th January 2023 ruled that wild camping is no longer legal on any Dartmoor land without the permission of the land owner. This has sent shock waves across the hiking and wild camping community and we discuss the impacts of this on everyone who uses Dartmoor land for recreational purposes.

Please help by signing THIS PETITION to get our government to bring forward new legislation around wild camping in national parks in England.

06 Feb 2023Mountain Weather with Garry Nicholson from MWIS00:43:09

Love it or loathe it, the weather seems to be one of the most talked about subjects in the UK. For those of us who love spending time outdoors, its an important part of planning our adventures. That's where the Mountain Weather Information Service come to the rescue. Focusing on 10 upland areas of Britain, they produce detailed forecasts specific to mountains, hills and moorlands.

In this episode, I'm joined by Garry Nicholson.  Garry has been working for MWIS since 2013 and is now one of the most active forecasters. He also manages ongoing projects and development for MWIS, and produces the popular video forecasts and social media content.

Garry has an MSc in Applied Meteorology and Climatology and a BA (Hons) in Geography and Broadcast Media.

Born and raised in rural Derbyshire, on the doorstep of the Peak District, Garry has always had an affinity for the great outdoors. His favourite stomping grounds include the rugged gritstone edges of the Dark Peak, the wide-open landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales and in more recent years bagging the classic fells of the Lake District, combined with regular trips to the Scottish Highlands.

Garry is a student of weather history, and loves to delve into the archives to uncover the ever-changing nature of the great British weather through the decades, analysing how various cycles and patterns combine to give differences over time.

Garry talks us through the planning stages of producing the forecast and explains how the weather affects us in the mountains. We talk about snow and ice, wind and clouds.

MWIS are running some great educational days in the coming months (early 2023) for you to spend some time with the meteorologists and learn about all things weather. See the MWIS website for lots more information on what they do and to keep up to date with the latest forecasts.

20 Feb 2023Well Mental UK00:44:15

Julianne Noon, like many of us, was hit hard by the pandemic lockdown. She decided to get out walking in her local area to keep active and lose weight. After posting pictures of her walks on social media, John got in touch and they soon began walking together.

A few small walks and big idea led to the birth of Well Mental UK - an opportunity for people in the local area to join others on group walks. The first walk was a success with 30 people showing up. The group quickly gained traction with more and more people joining them to stretch their legs, chat to new people and make new friends. Less than 3 years later ad Well Mental UK is now a Community Interest Company (CIC), setting up walks for the benefits of physical and mental wellbeing.

06 Mar 2023Health, Happiness & Healing00:56:32

Martin Little has swapped 'Aggressive Camping' for the more relaxing wild camping experience. In his army days, camping was a necessity and built his resilience. That resilience helped him bounce back from a serious injury after a suicide bomber detonated a bomb which unfortunately killed three of his friends and put Martin out of action for 18 months of recovery before returning to Afghanistan for a second tour. Army life took its toll on Martin's mental health and he soon realised he needed help. This help didn't come as quickly as we'd like to expect and Martin was lucky enough to find healing in the great outdoors.

Getting outside and wild camping soon became more than an escape and he began to share this passion with others and started his own venture in guiding people on wild camping retreats. He has now founded Health, Happiness & Healing, offering wellbeing wilderness retreats including wild camping, breath work and cold water therapy.

You can learn more about it by following on Instagram - @_health_happiness_healing or search Health, Happiness and Healing on Facebook.

20 Mar 2023The Bluetits with Sian Richardson01:17:35

Sian Richardson spent years running, competing in triathlons, cyclosportive events, marathons, ultramarathons and swimming events. In 2014, she decided that cold water swimming would make for a great new challenge.
Swimming into the colder months in the Pembrokeshire sea, others began noticing this solo swimmer braving the cold waters and soon started joining in. The Bluetits was born.

Fast forward to 2023 and there are now over 100,000 Bluetits across the world, all braving the cold to take a swim or a dip in their nearest expanse of open water.

Sian tells us how it all began, how cold water swimming benefits us in more ways than you think and how the community of Bluetits has grown into a worldwide inclusive family.

If you've ever considered trying a cold water swim or dip for the first time but have some reservations, Sian has the answers, the infectious personality and an incredible enthusiasm for all things cold water swimming - this is the episode for you!

10 Sep 2023Alex Staniforth - Ice Fall01:01:20

Alex Staniforth grew up in Cheshire and had a dream. A dream of climbing the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. For many, it is just that, a dream. But for Alex, it was a dream he couldn't shake off and he put his all into making it happen. In 2014, at the age of 17, he went to Nepal, ready to make his dream a reality. Unfortunately, disaster struck in the form of a devastating avalanche which swept down the mountain, killing 16 people. The expedition was cancelled. Alex returned the following year only to come face to face with another avalanche on his way to camp 1 after a huge earthquake hit Nepal. He was able to reach camp 1 where he was trapped for two days with no access back down the mountain.

Alex is now a motivational speaker, author of 2 books 'Ice Fall' and 'Another Peak', endurance athlete and adventurer and he is the founder of the charity MIND OVER MOUNTAINS.

08 Oct 2023Harrison Ward aka Fell Foodie - Cook Out01:37:50

In 2016, Harrison decided it was time to change. After years of suffering with ill mental health and suicidal thoughts, he found alcohol whilst working in hospitality. Alcohol soon became the biggest part of his life, drinking up to 20 pints and smoking everyday whilst battling with depression. A relationship breakdown saw Harrison vowing to remove alcohol and smoking from his life and he left York to move home to Cumbria.

He was welcomed home with love and support and looked for a way of filling the void left by alcohol. Cumbria had the answer and Harrison made the most of what was on the doorstep, hiking in the fells. He began combining his love of great food with his time in the fells and the 'Fell Foodie' was born.

He has since grown a huge following, appeared on TV with Dame Mary Berry, and has become a motivational speaker and now an author of his first book 'Cook Out', packed with recipes that you can use to cook up your own great dishes in the outdoors.

You can visit Harrison's website www.fellfoodie.co.uk to sign up to his newsletter, keep up to date with his work and to get your hands on 'Cook Out'. You can also get a signed copy HERE

22 Oct 2023Fancy a Walk Mate? - James Moon01:28:14

James was the life and sole of the party. Fancy a drink? Yes, would be the answer, every time. But it didn't stop with just a drink here and there. James' life was soon fueled by alcohol and drugs. It was consuming him and having an affect on his day to day life and relationships.

James seeked help and got his life back on track. Now sober, he has reignited the one relationship that was always there in waiting, nature and the great outdoors. James got outside to heal and found that getting in to the mountains was his new addiction, filling the void he'd successfully left behind. When he realised just how powerful the outdoors is for his wellbeing, he began to invite others along. He then formed a group for men - 'Fancy a Walk Mate?' A safe space for men to get outside together in nature and talk without any judgement, expectations or ego.

When a room indoors was being used, Fleur took her counseling session with a Young Person ,outside on the field. She instantly saw how powerful counselling without walls was.

Fleur went on to start her own business as a Therapeutic Counsellor and attended a nature based therapy course to learn more. She then trained as a Nature and Forest Therapy Guide with the ANFT where she learned of forest bathing and became an Eco-Nidra meditation teacher.

Around this, Fleur and her husband Pete are both Scout Leaders and love to see the power of nature and the great outdoors doing it's job with Young People.

Fleur and Pete, now run Nature Escapes and offer wellness retreats, forest bathing sessions, Eco-Nidra meditation sessions and more.

We met with Fleur on a glorious day at Shining Tor in The Peak District National Park and recorded this episode there in the sunshine.

09 May 2021Walk for your wellbeing special - part 101:03:01

In this episode Kirsty Collin takes over and discusses how being in nature and the outdoors can benefit our wellbeing. Kirsty also bravely shares her own story of mental health and the loss of her partner Ben, to suicide in 2020 and what life has been like since.

Mental health is a pandemic and we must talk about it more. I hope this episode inspires others to talk openly about a subject which still has a stigma attached to it. Let's erase that stigma. Above all, we should all be able to ask others if they are OK. #areyouok

Laurie Crayston has always had the drive to do things one step ahead of the norm. In late April 2021, he set out on his fourth attempt at walking all 214 Wainwrights fells in one continuous and unsupported round. At the time, this had never been completed by anyone. Whilst Laurie did not complete the round this time, we delve into the finer details of the challenge. We talk about weather, kit (and lack of), training and positive mindset - which Laurie oozes in abundance.

Sam was in a coma with a very small chance of pulling through and spent three months in hospital. She had to relearn how to walk and talk and miraculously made it through the other side. She has since gone on to summit 4000m peaks, Kilimanjaro and trekked to Everest Base Camp with a charity who help veterans.

We chat about Sam's mountain adventures, the importance of a positive mindset and her plans for the future.

01 Aug 2021Homos That Hike00:41:17

There's a 'scene' for every hobby and community. When I was in my late teens it was any fast food restaurant car park blaring music from my clapped out fiesta.

Neil, Matt and Andy said the same about the UK gay scene where coming in at 5am is the norm after a night on the dance floor. Now things are different and after joining forces to go out hiking they set up 'Homos That Hike'. Still in it's infancy, their instagram account is growing everyday with like minded hikers from the LGBTQIA+ community.

In this episode they share their reasons for loving the outdoors, the future of HTH, the wonders of hot flasks and we cover important things such as our favourite Disney theme tunes!

After a long break, Dexter got back on trail and has since completed some of the UK's favourites including the West Highland Way, Cape Wrath Trail, Lands end to John O'Groats and most recently, The South West Coast Path.
