05 Dec 2022SLP 178: Updating the Red Beast: Kay Al-Ghani on making her best selling novel more diverse, inclusive and effective00:26:02

Join Sue for an upcoming Live Virtual Workshop where you will learn from Sue practical tips & strategies to make a difference.

Buy the latest version of The Red Beast here.

✅ It is more inclusive – The original book was written for children with Asperger Syndrome, the new addition aims to reach most children on the Autism Spectrum.
✅ The new illustrations are more inclusive of typical children – so the child has a chance to see the behaviour of the angry boy in the playground from the perspective of their peers.
✅ Character names have been changed to be gender neutral and therefore more inclusive; so it’s now Danni & Charlie instead of Rufus and John.
✅ It has taken into account pupil’s perspectives. After going into schools, Kay learnt that many children disliked the picture of the Red Beast being caught in a net as it made the adults seems aggressive and uncaring. This has now been updated so the teachers are using gentle handling instead .

01 Jan 2023SLP 181: Sue Larkey’s Expert Series: Preparing for Post School – Tips for Navigating University & College for Diverse Students with College Founder Dr Perry LaRoque00:31:49

Join Sue for an upcoming Live Virtual Workshop where you will learn from Sue practical tips & strategies to make a difference.

Expert Guest: Dr. Perry LaRoque is the founder and president of Mansfield Hall, an innovative residential college support program for diverse learners. He earned his doctorate in special education from the University of Wisconsin and has served in a variety of leadership roles serving at-risk youth and people with disabilities. Before returning for his doctoral work, Dr. LaRoque worked in an assisted-living care facility for adults with intellectual disabilities and taught special education in several public schools.

For more information on Dr. Perry, please visit: https://perrylaroque.com/

In this interview, Dr. Perry LaRoque will talk about:

✅ The “tsunami” of students entering college with disabilities in the years to come and what can be done to prepare for this.
✅ How colleges and universities meet the needs of diverse learners.
✅ The need to view disability as diversity – institutions have made great strides in recognising the need for diversity, but the one area they still have not truly recognised are those will disabilities.
✅ To what extent do colleges and universities need to make adjustments?
✅ How students with disabilities can receive an extra level of support, when there’s not a lot of funding for this.
✅ Strategies students can use to make the college/university system work for them – these students often come from a structured support system in high school, but they will find that level of support is not there in college — how can they embrace the concept of hidden rules?
✅ Preparing for Post School Options, whether University or Work.

20 Feb 2023SLP 188: Why your words can cause meltdowns and what to say instead00:18:25

Join Sue for an upcoming Live Virtual Workshop where you will learn from Sue practical tips & strategies to make a difference.

In this episode, we will discuss:

✅ Children with autism often struggle to understand the inferred intent of language due to mind blindness, leading to difficulty following instructions.
✅ Certain words like "stop" and "no" can cause confusion and trigger an overreaction or escalate behaviour in children with autism.
✅ When using words like "stop," make sure to add more information to tell the child what they should do instead of what they shouldn't do.
✅ The words "could," "would," and "can" often sound like a choice rather than a direction, leading to confusion for children with autism.
✅ It's better to use clear and direct language like "start work" to avoid confusion and promote understanding
✅ Focusing on telling the child what to do instead of what not to do is more supportive and directive.
✅ It's important to use language that conveys the intended message clearly to ensure the child's safety and learning.
✅ Mind blindness can also cause difficulty in understanding another person's perspective.
✅ Teachers can improve communication by understanding the power of their words and using language that is clear, direct, and easy to understand.
✅ By making these changes in language, teachers can avoid triggers and improve communication with children with autism.

31 Oct 2022SLP 173: Timesavers & Top Transition Tips for Success in 202300:22:59

Join Sue for an upcoming Live Virtual Workshop where you will learn from Sue practical tips & strategies to make a difference.

It’s starting to get to the end of 2022, and you might already be starting to think about how you will ease the transition for the children you know. Or if you are just coming out of learning from home and moving to in-person teaching, these transition tips will help reduce anxiety and stress!

Transition can be big or small changes: it includes change in teacher, change in room, change in students in the class not just starting preschool, school, high school and beyond.

The nature of autism is such that transition can be extremely stressful, no matter what age or how BIG or SMALL the change maybe.

Changing Teacher is like…. Moving to a Foreign Country

For children with autism, moving to a new teacher, classroom or campus is like moving to foreign country. There is a different language (e.g. old teacher says ‘pack away’, new teacher says ‘clean up’). Teachers and other students have different facial expressions and body language to interpret, new rules, new schedules, new smells, different pencils, just to mention a few changes. This new ‘foreign country’ causes the child to feel enormous anxiety and stress, which in turn can lead to behaviour. This anxiety and behaviour can be managed by effective planning and transition strategies.
