I present to you episode 62 of Stupid Hearts Club in which fast talking comedy rascal Richard Hardisty, and myself take a swift turn from talking over each other about comedy dynamics, and suddenly find ourselves wandering quite deeply into territory that some listeners may want to prepare themselves for before jumping in.

We basically spent a lot of time talking about abusive behaviour, unhealthy relationships, controlling people, trauma, coercive control and other stuff like that, which was not the plan. Anyway, I think a lot of is quite engaging, but I want to be clear neither of are experts in this field (though both of us have experienced all sorts of nutty shit) so if you find it hard to hear people graspingly hypothesizing about something you may find personally painful just tread carefully, or turn it off if we're pissing you off!

I might talk about this subject a bit more on my own if there is a thirst for those kind of musings, as there is a lot of it about and I have done some learning about some of this stuff to help my own little rollercoaster along.

Yes it's time to cringe, wince and megalol your way through the second half of the bitchiest conversation I have ever had in my life, with our favourite Nanny-Hobbit and Muscle-Mary 'Matthew "Ping Pins" Morgan'.

He goes at me hard in this one in my opinion but I deflect the blows like an elderly, slightly confused Keanu Reeves in the Matrix with my next level defensiveness and super-bants. Does Matthew know more than me about everything?? Should I just fucking shut up? Decide for yourself!

I have an interesting beast for you all this week. And I don't just mean Teenwolf, who's dick AND Dad we discuss right at the bitter end. No this whole chat on Saturday night was a crazy old monster. It was a classic 3 hour wrestle with showbiz's oldest and moaniest soul who got himself all stuck and mired in Keto chat and other serious issues as I tried to bully, poke and badger him back onto the banter bus.

And did it work? Not really. But I'm sure some of you will get some joy out of hearing Nana trying her best.

Anyway, apologies for the mismatch in our volumes, I promise to try harder at that this week. I hate technology, but I can't stay mad at it as it allows me to talk to you lot.

Also sorry this ep was a day late but I got invited last minute to a glamourous comedy short film festival to represent a film my pal Chris Hayward made called 'Hamsbury Book Club' which he kindly put me in as 'Kenneth', the out of control liar.

The film which was screened at the BFI yesterday as part of the excellent LOCO film festival, ended up coming second which was a decent effort. And it meant I got to see my massive eye bags on a cinema screen where they belong.

The winner was a short, funny animation called 'I'm Going To Space' by Luke Frangeskou. His mum and dad were there so it's nice that he won. (I suppose)

Hello loves.

I decided to record a solo one this week just cos I have caught myself feeling happier lately and think I should put that into context for anyone struggling at the moment, having been seriously depressed earlier in the year myself. I hope it helps some of you to hear someone wanging on about recovery and stuff. All I can say is, whoever you are, I care, we care and other people very probably care too so whatever you are going through don't go through it alone- And I hope you take this episode as actual evidence that even the very dark times can and WILL pass, often in just a few eggy months. After which you will not recognise what your brain was bowling at you when it was poorly. If I can do it, so can you baby.

Going to put the tune at the end up on it's own and maybe a couple of others if that is of interest as wee bonus bits.

Also the 'Childs Game' conversation from Matt's pod is coming later as a cheery Brucie Bonus after this more serious episode.

PS - I have uploaded a photo of the symptoms 'diary' I made as I tried to get through the month I was told was still to go with major withdrawal symptoms- It really helped being able tick it off every night without having to remember it all again. I just picked up the pad at teatime and ticked or crossed how the last day had been until after a month I could see I was sleeping and eating better and doing okay.

Hello sods

Like many of us, I have felt totally rinsed by this year as it winds down, even though it has been largely brilliant for me. The creeping winter and some personal shit has really done a number on me this last few weeks and I have not been at all productive. That's what this episode is about in a way, trying to get my head round a bit of a dip in mood and find my way back to the energy that I need to make 2025 a belter.

I quite like this idea of kind of taking you guys with me when I'm podding so that's what I've played with here. I have a little sulk in Linda the van, then pep myself up round Flavour Freds house, and end up twatted in a pub. So let me know how you feel about being in my pocket with me as I gad about.

The year ahead will have lots of travel and going places in it, I think it's a nice new layer on things. Anyway, I shall try and hit the ground running and deliver you lot a nice chunk of stuff in the next few weeks.

It's a Freezing January Monday late aftertnoon on the M1 and I am very tempted to stay in a fancy BnB and do some laptoppin'. But then I remember what I am supposed to be doing. I'm supposed to be using my van to break up journeys. I'm supposed to be being more adventurous. And so I end up making friends with some pigs in the dark. This yanks my mind open and makes me connect with the true value of planless, aimless, travelling....just to see where it leads to....

Pop the champagne! Open the patio doors and let the bells of joy ring out! I'm back, AND have fled the wretched, needy arms of Miles Chapman, my only friend for 'Miles' when I lived in solitude in the tiny village of dead-herbs, for good.

Now, I live in the glittering whirlpool of Brighton and Hove, with it's coffee cafe's, skateboard-vinyl/hybrid jamdowns and vegan shoe'd be-dreadlocked dreamers!

This episode was recorded just before Christmas when I met up with  Miles for a coffee and then broke up with him in a car while presenting him with a needlessly cruel gift. (Tee hee). We then talked about more 'Beige' stuff that makes our blood boil. And generally nipped at each other a bit like hawks pecking a dead badger.

Hey there my Stupid Hearted angels.

This episode marks the start of my concerted effort to use Linda the camper van in a more adventurous way when I am bobbing around the country. I thought I wouldn't be feeling the call of the road at least til the Daffodils are up but after feeling poorly and getting cabin fever, I thought I'd brave a pub car park stopover to break up my recent trip home to Manchester. Being mid January it was bloody freezing and Linda does not have heating yet, but I wanted to experience a winter over-nighter to see whether it was bearable.

This is a cracking, chatty episode with tv comedy actress and personal buddy Kerry Howard. You may know her from Him and Her, Witless, Young Hyacinth and many more shows on the lol-circuit. Kerry is currently earning her drama stripes in Waterloo Road, and is still very much a reliable, funny-boned comedy hire gun.

Over on Insta, her daily efforts to stay mentally and physically in peak condition are a huge part of her mission at the moment and here she does a pretty good job of inspiring me into 'moving more' even though I am sat in bed with a cold looking like a melted, Jabba the Hut candle as I type this.

I bloody love Kerry, I always have a great chat with her and she made me an excellent brew with the correctly meagre amount of milk in it.

Hey you lot. Ma'am is home from a 2 day canal lager-binge/barge trip in Yorkshire with my toppermost boys from Manchester. I will do an episode about it this week as it was wonderfully eventful in the smallest of ways.

Meanwhile Ep 9 is here (more or less when I said)  and it's a belter of a chat. I spoke to brilliant character comedian, and all round mega-creative human firework display Mona Yousefi earlier this week and it was FUN.

Who is Mona? Well, In words literally cut and pasted from her own dazzling website https://monayousefi.com/ her bio starts thus:

Mona Yousefi  is a British actress and writer.  She is best known for her eclectic style and her alter egos Tallah Khosravian, Wakana Fukui, and Natascha  Leboushkin.  Mona gained recognition from her first directorial  television debut Mayhem Makers.  She rose to prominence with her performance in Going Native, which was commissioned by the BBC.

I worked with her a few years back and was supremely impressed at her comedy chops, ingenuity and bravery in public. 

But THAT IS NOT ALL. Mona is also a fully rounded human lady, and though she is very funny, talented and interesting her understanding of audio technology is beautifully naive. For that reason some of the audio in this ep might present some volume challenges as she accidentally had her mic nuclear loud. It's not as bad as the start all the way through though and we have a laugh with it so I trust you will all muddle through grinning and laughing generously at Nana's foppish amateurishness.

Hey there my Stupid Hearted angels.

I parked Linda the Camper Van next to a big BIN on the seafront everyone, but she is still the apple of my eye as our love affair begins to pick up pace. This week I am heading West to Wales to do a wee acting role in an indie film and I am taking Linda with me. She will be playing the role of business hotel on wheels. There will also be stops in Swindon and Bath before I head back up to London on Tuesday for another lil acting job.

Anyway in this episode I've ended up chirping on about bigger potential road-trips into Europe including my old family home from home, Marbella in Southern Spain. You can hear all about how cool my mum was in the 60's and how my real dad (a mystery 70's Zorro figure who I never saw) did George Bests's hair, which is what brought Marbella into my mums life.....

Christian then plays us acoustic versions of two of his originals, does an ace cover of 'Senses Working Overtime' by XTC, and then pluckily joins me in a rendition of one of my own songs 'The Place Beyond The Tears'.

We worked together earlier in the year and his Insta really makes me laugh, here we perform the working class background version of trying to talk about geopolitical events and I patronizingly come across all Obi Wan, warning a fully grown man with a busier diary than me, all about the perils of showbiz. He takes it very generously. This weeks episode is a beauty, as I talk and chuckle with telly/film director-extraordinaire Jim Field Smith, whilst sipping on session ale by the river next to Kew bridge.

I've know Jim for 20 years and have watched both proudly and bitterly as his career has steadily climbed all the way up to the point where any writer could be forgiven for getting what we in the trade might call 'major boxset envy'.

Here we discuss surviving in the telly biz, some of Jim's finest work from shooting a sketch up an alley-way with me to directing actual airplanes in the sky whilst directing Apple TV mega-drama 'Hijack'. There is also a LOT of fun making analogies out of bad grammar and deep sea fish.

Well this is a bit of a mad one.

At the time of sitting down to record this episode little did I know we were mere moments away from the most momentous news moment since Princess Diana and the Twin Towers. The passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. I hope you appreciate me leaving in an intro where I am innocently musing on the then current news that that Queen was at that point just apparently not well. What transpires after that moment happened in real time in a way that though odd and far from being the sort of thing I would usually talk about, is our own little SHC shaped slice of this historical moment. In short, it's audio gold. Award winning? Hey, I'm not 'about' awards, but let's just say I am confident this episode will live long in all our memories for a multitude of reasons.

Be in no doubt before you press play that there are in this episode shades of bemused clumsiness before 'the event', followed by a kind of panicked attempt at decorum, but ultimately, you will no doubt be relieved to hear, it soon descends into foul bullying and point-scoring as human cockroach Alistair Griggs fails once again, to hide the truth of what he is. Just dreadful.

I am still LOVING delivering your weekly podcast. Well, it gives the poor old sod, something to do between Spitting Image zoom calls don't it. Yes I am FINALLY (more or less) back in the land of the living. Thank you so much to everyone who has hung around to wait for me to get better. The last few months have been horrendous but it's starting to lighten by the day/

And It is seriously really helpful and cool to have this poddles to turn back on again to get my brain firing again and to have that connection with you all, and of course my guests.

This episode gives you the chance to meet the wonderful Jason Hazelely, brilliant writer and even better pal. We wrote some joke books during lockdown and did a load of sketches on Spitting Image together and are really only just getting going as a writing team after the weirdness of the pando. Here we discuss muchos daft stuff, serious mental health stuff and the dodgy lyrics in early Beatles songs, (Jason is a HUGE Beatlenut - He even has a book laying out the recording equipment for every song like some sort of psycho).

I've stuck a wee strum on the end lest we forget that I like to force my singing on whoever will listen.

About three weeks ago I bumped into 'Beached Brass' on the seafront and could not believe how joyful their sound was. I asked band leader Gabriel Garrick if he would be up for a podcast chat and maybe joining me for a song in a rehearsal room.

A few days later I found myself in the room I had booked for 2 of us with a 6 piece Jazz band! One or two of whom were BRAND new to the line-up. Oh and a big dog called Jovis who attends all jams and gigs at all time. What happened next was nothing short of magical.

It was a snowy very crisp day and the sloshy snowy paths made it quite an aggy little trek. But we pressed on because, as usual, Fred had a little mission for us to find 'Tree Mallow' so that he could serve me Wild Dolmades at the end of the journey. Yes, that's right, cold meze, in the snow. Lovely stuff.

There is about to be much more of this sort of thing when we launch The Wild Lunch Podcast for real in the next few weeks. We are both very excited about it. Especially as we plan our first dining/podcast/music experience in a lovely venue in Brighton.

Hello sods

Please enjoy this really funny funster episode of Stupid Hearts Club with hilarious voiceoverer and comedy actor Charlotte Morgan. We met in a moody little cafe in Hastings and sat upstairs in the bit where people who don't like people go and sit to hiss at each other during their horrible day out that both of them ruin by sniping at each other and then drinking too much.

Charlotte and I tried to keep that spirit up by talking to each other with a lack of respect bordering on toxic, and the result, I'm sure you will agree, is lots of fun.

This episode was slightly hampered by an SD card getting full and me being too much of a grandpa to know how to cope with it. I think we lost about 12 mins of golden bants, but at least you have this!

In the last few days I have also recorded with Griggs (also includes some SD card bollocks, but still got some good stuff) Miles Chapman, who's audio was as shit as it always is, and a lovely lady called Jillian, who joined me for an episode of Tea and Empathy.

Since I moved to sunny (actually quite windy and rainy) Hove, I have been rubbing my face around town trying to get my finger onto the local pulse in all sorts of ways (stop it). One shining piece of evidence that that is working a treat is this fine chat with marketing and hospitality/food blogger and man about town Mark McCulloch from @surpersonic_inc who a friend hooked me up with (I said stop it) and who I immediately got on with, in a pub. Drinking beer.

Sure, we may have hit of it as budding new lager pals, but here we are just being two healthy big lads talking each other up in a big tough world full of grown up decisions and self-activated opportunities, or something. Basically Mark is a smooth operator and I like his style and I am trying to learn from his energy for doing stuff.

Can we go for some more free meat now please Mark?

Had a reet fun chat with Miles again yesterday as we wanted to complete our chat about 'beige' things in our culture that make us cringe with superiority and untamed anger. We also discuss being 'horrible in your heart' which means, saying dreadful things in front of people you know well enough to know that really you do not mean the vile thing you just said. And despite believing in every human beings right to do just that, I have actually edited some of it out because it didn't sound very nice on second listen. But that in itself has it's own value as the section in question led to some top remix banter skillz.

For anyone who cares the song at the end is called 'Get Your War On' and was recorded with my old band The Above (we never got anywhere (long sigh) but we did record an album for prosperity). I dare say there's still a bloody myspace page up with some of it on. Dear me what a thought.

I think you will love Russ, he is very much a person who clearly doesn't take a single moment of his job for granted, and he made me a proper Brew with not too much milk in it.

I had a lovely old chinny-waggle about comedy and anxiety with top lady funster Anna Morris this week. She is best known as the posh lady in Channel 4's Lee and Dean. In other news I have tested positive for Covid today and am feeling quite shit so am going to assume I might not get round to recording an ep in the week. Though we will see how bad I get it. I almost certainly got it from going into soho and doing my acoustic set on Thursday, but it was still worth it as it was a top night and I had waited so long to have a proper night out. Hello lovelies

Back in November my excellent comedy actor pal Laura Patch (from Netflix hit Afterlife) let me into her rather impressive kitchen for a chat about life, writing and processing trauma. That's episode 73 if you want to go back and find it. Now 6 months later, the play she was merely tinkering with back then is up on it's feet as Laura performs it and hones it into it's perfect shape. Last Friday I had a brilliiant catch up with her in Cote in Soho (OooooOOOOoooooh, alright Lawrence LLywellyn Bowen).

We had a further chat about writing about personal experience, and processing trauma which has become a very hot issue the last few weeks since Baby Reindeer arrived and seemingly caught the attention of the whole world, and not always for the better as the hype and opinion furnace began to rage.

After our chat I went and watched Glorious in Clapham on Tuesday where I got to see Laura in action. I also got to meet some of Lauras buddies which was very interesting indeed and only confirms to me how ace and loved she is, the absolute sod.

This ep concludes with me referring back to watching the play, and reflecting on how great it is watching a project go through the stages of finding it's truest self.

Before I start trying to justify the utter carnage that is this episode, I feel I owe you lovely people an apology for not delivering a pod since the 5th of December. As it goes I've got about 6 episodes recorded but I have been unwell and in a really spaced out zone the last couple of weeks, and my daily notes to myself about editing and posting ended up lost in a rotating list of shit that I haven't not even vaguely managed to do.

However, by the time the year ends there will be a wonderful bonus Patreon episode of Tea and Empathy with a lady called Denise, who is a therapist, but on a more conversational friendly level instead of as a taster of therapy. I have also rescued and embellished the amazing Griggs conversation I had the other week but messed up. That means that you will be getting a Griggs special Christmas episode, that I promise you is fucking hilarious.

Now back to this absolute fucking shambles. Every single time I have attempted to do a remote podcast with Miles Chapman, he has forgotten that he needs to be wearing headphone (and ideally is speaking into a proper mic), so that my voice does not come echoing out of the speakers at his end. And everytime I point it out and get frustrated he gets annoyed with me (as if it's my fault) to the point where it sounds like he might cry.

Luckily nothing in this world, makes me happier than hearing Miles getting angry at something that is his own doing, and actually in some ways it is the only feeling I am still able to access in this cess-pool of a world. So please revel in the joy of the first few minutes of this shamefullly, hate-filled dirge. For the record I actually had to send the sound files to be cleaned up by AI, and what is left is still a bit annoying. Look out for the sudden laptop scratchy noises towards the end for example. I honestly give up.

Hello everyone

As promised in the last solo episode here is the first episode of one of my new spin-off series ideas. Tea and Empathy. This will be a monthly event where I sit in a cafe and 'someone' turns up and chats to be about whatever it is they have going on, or is on their mind. It's all about having non-judgmental, empathetic conversations with people we might not otherwise engage with deeply, if at all.

In this opening episode I asked a guy called Ricky who sometimes is in a co-working space I use if he was up for telling me about what he gets up to while I am titting about doing podcast bits and hustling for coin.

I genuinely ended up learning and thinking about a few things I didn't know and hadn't thought about before, and it was nice to get a lil sharey time with someone I usually just nod at over my laptop.

This is very much an attempt to remind myself and others that when we talk to each other in real life, away from the bearpit of social media and the internet, that it leaves room for a bit more humanity, and empathy, especially if there's a nice cup of tea involved.

Hopefully together we can grow our little community into a fun and wholesome space that is exciting and creative and above all, positive.

Hey everyone. I have done something a little different this week and recorded a super relaxed, reflective chat into my voicenotes app while lying on my bed. Which was then polished up by the new production hotshot I am about to tell you about.

I have had a few things I want to say that are more in the deep and meaningful zone and I just had it in my mind that saying it away from my desk mic in a really intimate way might give it a different feel. That turned out to be true in a good way (the part of my brain I accessed whilst talking) and also bad (i made some swallowing sounds like a dog drinking from a bowl which had to be edited out).

In this fresh-duvet-scented episode I tell you all about the forthcoming plans to solidify and expand the Stupid Hearts Club multiverse of content, talk about the odd feelings I get during the changing of the seasons, and some recent escapades noticing people struggling out there.

Hey there my Stupid Hearted angels.

Alice Lowe is possibly the most fruitful creative person I know. In fact, when I went to her house, even her actual fruit bowl contained turnips, bananas, peppers, a pomegranate and much much more. I think that image kind of works as a very strong analogy for her output. As the reigning indie queen of UK cinema Alice has already delivered three cult classics with Sightseers, Prevenge and last years Timestalker, and in my opinion she is only just getting going.

This chat is part 2 of a recording I did when I visited her near Stroud in my camper van Linda. This weeks chat is more about Alices career and our shared (and differing) experiences as UK writers in and around the world of comedy and the arts.

It's a fantastic conversation that any budding or (struggling) creative will benefit from. I have had a pretty damn sad week as a result of a friend passing away and I really, really did not have it in me to be wacky and funny the last few days, but I didn't want to not drop a show either so I have kind of talked through some reflective stuff here on sadness and the shit in life and how I, at least aspire to handle it. Please feel free to skip this episode if you feel you are not in the mood to hear someone processing and ruminating on dealing with some dark issues like grief and loss and just the what the fuck of this whole shitty mess called life- But I do know some of you will understand why I thought talking like this might be of use to someone out there. For the first time since Stupid Hearts Club went free I am talking to regular guest and fellow silly sod, comedy man and star of 'Lee and Dean', Miles Chapman.

Full disclosure for newbies, in the course of our friendship, Miles and I have weekly horrible nicknames for each other and this week I decided to call him 'Hate Speech', this ended up being foreshadowing as we ended up discussing how to deal with the spectre of comedy you find distasteful, substandard or offensive. Something that has a different weight to it when you work in 'the industry'. Hope you find it an interesting chat.

Hey You Smashing Persons...

Something a little different today. As you all know, since I moved to Brighton a year ago, I have been busking, playing live music gigs, meeting and collaborating with all kinds of musicians, which has made me very happy. This uptick in musical energy has also given rise to my Patreon Only Bonus Podcast Series 'The Busking Chronicles', a chatty pod where I interview musicians who are hustling to make a a bit of a living from their love of playing music. We tend to chat for around 40 mins and then strum a few tunes out together. It's cute. It's kind of for my patreons only so if you if you want to check out a few eps, just join my patreon and have a squizz.

Anyway now and then I like to drop a hint of my bonus stuff in the wild to tempt new Stupid Hearted folk in to our little community. So, today I am dropping an edited, slightly rough, audio edit of the first ever Stupid Hearts Club music night, which took place at the Bees Mouth bar in Hove in late November. It was a gorgeous evening with some amazing performances and lots of laughter.

Have a listen and perhaps consider coming down to the next one on Thursday March 28th again at the Bees Mouth, Hove. A truly excellent little music bar full of mad shit, long haired, gentle staff and amusing toilet decor.

Or if you live far away, why not consider how I could come to your area and put a similar night on (you would obvs have to help me find some acts near you, but it would be fun right? And allows me to get on the road which is going to becoming more of how I approach Stupid Hearts Club in 2024-
