Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show.

CRAIG WEDREN
Craig Wedren first gained notice as the dynamic, multi-octave-wielding frontman of Shudder to Think. With its eccentric song structures and complex time signatures, Shudder to Think would prove a significant influence on math rock, post-hardcore, and emo. Since the band wound down in the late-’90s, Wedren has released a series of solo albums and related collaborative projects, and his music has become an essential part of some of film and television’s most popular and lauded shows.

Beginning with the soundtracks for the late-’90s films High Art and First Love, Last Rites along with his Shudder to Think bandmates, Craig’s composing resume has gone on to include extensively working with director Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right) and David Wain (Role Models, Wet Hot American Summer). Wedren would go on to create evocative, decidedly contemporary scores for cultural-touchstone films and television series including The School of Rock, Laurel Canyon, Reno 911!, GLOW (Netflix), Fresh Off the Boat (ABC), Shrill (Hulu), New Amsterdam (NBC) and, most recently, the wildly popular Showtime series YELLOWJACKETS.

ANNA WARONKER
Anna Waronker is a composer, songwriter, singer and artist. Well known as the front woman and songwriter for the Los Angeles based band that dog., Anna has taken her unique melodic and harmonic sensibility and personal lyrical wit into composing for film and television.

Notable scores and soundtracks include the limited series adaptation of Tegan & Sara’s best-selling memoir, High School (FreeVee), Shrill (Hulu) with whom she co-composed with Craig Wedren, I Love That For You (Paramount+ with Showtime), the animated series Harriet The Spy (Apple), the cult classic Josie And The Pussycats, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and many more.

Anna has also worked in theater as a composer penning the music, book and lyrics with Charlotte Caffey (Go-Go’s) for Lovelace A Rock Opera (The Hayworth Theater, Edinburgh Fringe Festival) and songs and score for a musical adaptation of Hit The Wall and Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner’s The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (Los Angeles LGBT Center/Davidson/Valentini Theatre).

As a singer, performer and recording artist, Anna has produced and released two solo albums and four albums with that dog., most recently the critically acclaimed Old LP (UMe) in 2019.

Recently, Anna has been busy working on the third season of Call Me Kat (Fox) and the young adult mystery School Spirits (Paramount+). Anna is currently working on the second season of the Emmy nominated and Critic’s Choice winner Yellowjackets (Paramount+ with Showtime) with Craig Wedren. The duo write and perform a very unique and celebrated score. For season two of Yellowjackets, Anna and Craig have written an original song that features Hedwig and the Angry Inch’s John Cameron Mitchell and collaborated with Alanis Morrisette on an alternate version of their Hollywood Music in Media Awards winning main title of Yellowjackets entitled “No Return.”

13 Nov 2023Brendan Angelides & Nima Fakhrara - Assassin's Creed: Mirage00:58:31

Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show.

BRENDAN ANGELIDES

Brendan Angelides’ (formerly known as ESKMO) arrival at the world of scoring in 2016 was exactly the opportunity he had been hoping for. It felt conducive to the narrative process and sonic aesthetic he had developed in his work as a recording artist, being deeply in the mindset of The Echo Society, a collaborative of local Los Angeles artists and composer, at the time and recognizing the potential of his sound within a visual framework. Since 2016, Angelides has written the soundtracks for seven seasons of Billions, as well as Echoes (Netflix), Super Pumped (Showtime) and the 2021 film Naked Singularity. While scoring the four seasons of Netflix’s celebrated 13 Reasons Why, he collaborated with Selena Gomez to produce a cover of Yazoo’s “Only You.”

In 2023, Angelides’ embrace of new creative territories expands again as he presents his first video game score with Assassin’s Creed: Mirage. Bringing his electronic artistry to the Ubisoft adventure set in ninth century Baghdad, Angelides worked with musicians connected with the region and culture including the New York Arabic Orchestra and Tunisian artist Emel Mathlouthi, whose viral protest song during the Arab Spring inspired the theme for Mirage’s courageous female lead.

The year also marks Angelides’ most ambitious project with The Echo Society to date. Their soundtrack to director Darren Aronofsky’s forthcoming film ‘Postcard from Earth’ was showcased at the world’s largest 4K screen at the Sphere, Las Vegas, across 160,000 speakers and 1600 subwoofers.

NIMA FAKHRARA

Iranian-born composer Nima Fakhrara has honed his craft for nearly twenty years by scoring more than 100 feature films, multiple AAA game franchises and international television shows, as well as crafting commercial music for boutique brands. This massive body of work led acclaimed director Anna Forester to tap Nima as composer for Bad Robot’s latest feature film LOU (2022, starring Academy Award winner Allison Janney).

His unique blend of East-meets-West and command of striking, sonic textures and timbres led gaming legend David Cage to select him to compose the music for 2018’s wildly successful and critically acclaimed DETROIT BECOME HUMAN and the announcement to the Star Wars video game franchise ECLIPSE. Other gaming credits include WARHAMMER: SPACE MARINES 2, RESIDENT EVIL: REVELATIONS 2 and 1979 REVOLUTION.

While his music is found all over the American media landscape, the composer’s musical journey started back in Tehran at age five. Young Nima lugged his santur up six flights of stairs for each lesson with a master instructor. This early education imbued Fakhrara with a firm grasp of Persian classical music, an unyielding discipline, and a knack for complex rhythms. After moving to the Washington DC area at age 12, Fakhrara later earned a degree in composition from California State University while simultaneously studying ethnomusicology and Music Anthropology.

31 Jan 2023Son Lux: Everything Everywhere All At Once01:00:00

Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show.

SON LUX
From the start, Son Lux has operated as something akin to a sonic test kitchen. The band strives to question deeply held assumptions about how music is made and reconstruct it from a molecular level. What began as a solo project for founder Ryan Lott expanded in 2014, thanks to a kinship with Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia too strong to ignore. The trio strengthened their chemistry and honed their collective intuition while creating, releasing, and touring six recordings, including Brighter Wounds (2018) and triple album Tomorrows (2021). The result is a carefully cultivated musical language rooted in curiosity and balancing opposites that largely eschews genre and structural conventions. And yet, the band remains audibly indebted to iconoclastic artists in soul, hip-hop, and experimental improvisation who themselves carved new paths forward. Distilling these varied influences, Son Lux searches for equilibrium of raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions. Son Lux has most recently scored the new Daniels film for A24, Everything Everywhere All at Once. The full score album features new collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, Randy Newman, and Moses Sumney, among others.

Our dublab DJs have united for a nonstop marathon of mixes and shows to carry you through the end of our 2023 membership drive.

This is a special episode by Chandler Poling, who hosts Studio Soundtracks every 1st Tuesday of the month, 9-10am.

This very special episode of Studio Soundtracks sashays its way into the theme of musicals – specially musicals in television. For years, TV programs often surprise their audiences by having an episode explore the musical genre and have their characters belt out tunes and change up the pace. From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Scrubs, this has been a trick of the trade, however this show is dedicated to the challenge of embedding musical numbers into the reality of their shows. THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL explores a 60’s Industrial Musical inside the 5th episode of the final season – written by Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore – and GINNY & GEORGIA had the task of writing a full high school musical – written by Lili Haydn and Ben Bromfield – set within the drama of the show.
