A common mantra on the show is, “Because of the digital, we have a gap in analogue knowledge.” This is true. Often times, I see young photographers in Facebook groups asking questions about old film techniques. Techniques that have seemingly been lost on the next generation of photographers due to the fact that there has been a void in the transfer of knowledge. But one German company is trying to fill that void: PhotoKlassik International.

06 Dec 2018Tetenal is in Trouble. They Need Your Help!00:28:33

Full Article on Website.

This is big news in Europe, however it has not made a big splash in the US and has flown under our radar. Literally the day after Photokina, Tetenal announced they're in financial turmoil. Due to some bad business practices from their suppliers, Tetenal is in a state of insolvency. We learn while the film resurgence is real, but it is still very fragile. Their collapse could potentially decimate film photography.

Don't panic though! They have some ideas in resurrecting some old ideas to bring to consumers and  want to hear from the film community for ideas!

12 Aug 2019Community Collaborations with Michael Bartosek01:03:06

The creator for the Kodak 2238 Project, a community collaboration, Michael Bartosek, shares his reasons for starting a film community collaboration. Thirty people are given two rolls of Kodak 2238 black and white film. This is a low speed, fine grain, panchromatic film that is not commonly used for photography. Traditionally, this film is used for digital separation imagery. Then the photographers would develop them and share their images for a zine.

His project is going so well that it inspired me to take a horde of expired film that was kindly given to me from a friend and Fujfilm Representative, Brandon Remler. More details to come as I build out the specifics for the zine.

FujiFilm Officially Kills NeoPan Acros 100

It's official. FujiFilm has announced the discontinuation of Acros 100. Written on a previous post, we believe that FujiFilm got out of the film game before the resurgence. Because of the filmgrain.es article and connections to FujiFilm  in addition to Doc Kaps meeting with FujiFilm execs to save FP-100C, we believe this to be enough evidence to think the machinery is long gone.

Kodak Announces Ektachrome E100 in 16mm

Let's get it out of the way. There's another pushback on the timeline. It is now slated for late summer/early fall 2018. It's okay though. The gap is getting smaller and smaller it's important that Kodak has a successful launch for Ektachrome. When the article was posted, 35mm was not mentioned and people started to get concerned. We tweeted Matt Stoffel at Kodak and has confirmed that 35mm is on the same timelines as Super 8 and 16mm.

https://twitter.com/StoffelMatt/status/982369815443771394

We believe the announcement of 16mm format is the result of a survey Kodak put out about the super 8 camera in early February.

Tim Gander

After the podcast episode, Tim Gander submitted an article sharing his experience switching to a digital camera and beating his competition to print who were still shooting on film. Read up on the article here and listen to his 'One-on-One' interview with Bill here.

Adorama

On April 4, 2018, Adorama Learning Center writer, Mason Resnick, posted an article called, “5 reasons why I am never going back to Film Photography.” We posted a Google cache link since all articles by Mr. Resnick have been taken down. The REAL reason why photographers got angry is because it's another "Film vs. Digital" article. We get it, every point Resnick writes is accurate. But everybody has their own reason for shooting film.

Things went from bad to worse really quick when photographer, Mike Fraser, discovered the image of a Leica M3 is identical to the image of a Leica M3 on Ken Rockwell's website. Fraser questioned Resnick of the similarities. Resnicks response, "We must have identical Leicas." When that comment did not pass muster, the comment was deleted and ultimately sent the article into viral mode among the photography community. The watermark is in a very difficult spot to crop out. Ken places it where you really have to intentionally remove it.

On 4/6 Adorama issues an article titled We Are Sorry in response to the fallout. The article acknowledges the improper use of Ken Rockwell's image and offered compensation. According to PetaPixel the amount is $1,000.

Now that Adorama is on the radar, people began to audit Resnick's previous writings and discovered an article posted prior to the Ken Rockwell incident. Images from Bellamy Hunt's article, 'Camera Historica: The Sean Flynn Leica M2' details the story war photojournalist and his Leica M2. The same images in Bellamy's article were used without his approval on Adorama's blog (Google cached link).

As a result, all articles written by Resnick have been taken down.

MiNT

MiNT gives an update on the RF-70. Bring up price and new features – Internal Flash and External flash port – Excited because this really takes instant film to a new level in analog photography. Price – Slightly more expensive than SLR670-S which comes in at $729.

Photowalk Website

Photographer, Martin Smith, has built a website tailored for photowalks and photo meetups. There are disadvantages to big sites like Meetup.com and Eventbrite that don't always fit the needs of a photowalk. It is quite popular in Europe and we want to help him make this a popular tool for the photo community around the world.

19 Nov 2019The Collapse of Digital, Film Rises from the Ashes01:23:26

In a change of format, Bill Manning invites EM of Emulsive and Paul McKay, CEO of Analogue Wonderland, to discuss the recent grim new for digital camera manufacturers for Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, and Olympus. Sony sells its shares back to Olympus, some viewing a dumping of devalued stock, Nikon fails to innovate and as well outsourcing all of it components. None of this is new to these manufacturers, the writing has been on the wall for years, once dismissed by Canon CEO Fujio Mitarai.

While the digital camera market questions its future, film photography has show significant growth as Kodak reports its film division experience 21% growth year-over-year. In addition to it's growth, other film manufacturers are feeling bull-ish in bringing new products to the market: Fujifilm Acros 100 II, Film Ferrania P30, Lomography Metropolis, etc.

13 Jan 2021Kodachrome: The Final Days00:56:46

Kodachrome: songs have been written about it, parks have been named after it, movies have been produced about it. It is an iconic film that has not been commercially processed since January 18, 2011. The photo lab to make its last stand for Kodachrome was Dwayne's Photo. When Kodak gave Steve McCurry the last roll of Kodachrome off the manufacturing line, Dwayne's Photo was instantly thrown to an international stage as the last lab to process Kodachrome. I would go to say that Kodachrome's legacy is shared with Dwayne's Photo.

As we approach the 10th anniversary of the last rolls of Kodachrome to be commercially processed, we invite Derek and Josh Carter, grandsons to Dwayne, and new owners to the multi-generation family business. They share stories of the final days of Kodachrome and discuss the roller coaster ride of the renewed interest in film photography.

Dwayne's Photo still processes various formats of film (even Disc) to this day. You can check them out on their website: https://www.dwaynesphoto.com/

29 Apr 2018Interview with Lomography00:31:38

(32 min, 28MB)
Article with images and links available on Website.

We interview Lomography General Manager, Christian Polt, and learn a little about the history of the company. Additionally, we discuss some of the products Lomography offers.

Lomography all started when some students traveled to Prague towards the end of the Soviet Union and came across a camera designed extremely closely to the Cosina CX-2. That camera is called the Lomo LC-A. This camera quickly built a cult following throughout Europe. Though the success of the LC-A and the 4-lens, SuperSampler, in Europe, it quickly spread to the United States.

Between 2010 and 2012, at the peak of the film photography collapse, large companies were discontinuing emulsions. However, because Lomography was considered as a small company, it was agile enough to announce emulsions. One of the most popular emulsions is the Lomochrome Purple.

Chris Gampat, Editor in Chief at Phoblographer did an amazing review of Lomography's 800 speed color negative! You should check it out here!

Lomography has gained wild popularity with  its instant cameras. I purchased an Lomo' Instant Mini on a cruise a couple years back. I also purchased the Lomo' Instant Wide for my wife as a birthday gift!

These cameras gave instant film a much better credibility. Initially, with a limited camera selection from Fujifilm, Lomography provides a bit more freedom for creativity with an internal light meter for variable apertures, exposure compensation, multiple exposure, and bulb mode.

I am new to the instant photography world and never really gave it much attention. However, owning two of these cameras, I keep it handy when I want to give a keepsake to a client or for myself.
