For years, I journaled on the same four issues: weight, love, jobs, and friendships. Then I realized it wasn’t about the specific problem, it was all of the TYPE OF THOUGHTS I was thinking that kept me in the problem with no resolution. Journaling doesn’t solve your problems, at least not the conventional method of how we’ve approached journaling thus far. Sure, it helps us to feel momentary relief but does the problem ever go away? Typically, the problem resurfaces wearing a new suit of clothes. And that is because typical method of journaling only reinforces WHY it’s a problem! In this episode, I’m going to breakdown two ways in which you can begin to see the type of thoughts that are actually CREATING the problem and how you can begin to identify with a more Solution Oriented Mindset. And this happens because of the belief that once the problem is solved, the stress will go away. What most people never realize is that the first problem every person must solve first, is the shift from Problem Oriented Thinking to Solution Oriented Thinking. There’s a nuance we must catch between an emotional reaction vs. an emotional response. An emotional reaction is when we react more to the story in our mind than the fact of what just happened. An emotional response is when we have a natural biological response to what just happened. However, more often than not, most people think that feeling “bad” is a weakness. If you struggle with NOT checking your email in the evenings, you’re not alone. Most Stressed Out Successes have every intention to shut down by 8pm, but find themselves hearing or seeing the notification and before they know it they’re responding to the email on their phone. What’s worse is they start feeling guilty for not being more present with their loved ones or if they’re single, they start resenting their work because all of their free time is consumed with thoughts about work! When we don’t realize change requires us to feel multiple emotions and the need to hold two emotions in one container, oftentimes we will mistake sadness, grief, or even desire as a signal that we made the wrong decision when really it was ok to feel all of those things to begin with. Why is it that we feel a pit in our stomach when something GOOD happens in our life? Oftentimes when I work with people there will be a moment where they believe things should be different, that intellectually they understand they shouldn't feel a certain way and yet they feel so much pain, that something must be wrong with them because they still feel this way. And here's the truth. There is nothing wrong with you. You are NOT broken. You're simply a human being, experiencing a human being thing called LIFE. We can either go through the hard moments with grace, or we can suffer along the way. We can feel our emotions from a clean place, or we can muddy the experience with all the reasons why this shouldn't be happening or "rush" the process. There's absolutely nothing wrong with you. You're learning what it means to be human... ... and discovering tools along the way to better handle the next moment.
