09 Jun 2023"Fifth Element (1997)" - Technicolor Science Fiction perfection.01:31:20

Bright, bold, ambitious and so narratively tight you couldn't fit a postcard in between the plot points. This movie was, and still is, sheer perfection. A shining example of the sincere ambition that we love so much in 90s movies so, naturally, we had to gush about it for an hour. Kate joined in the fun!

01 Dec 2023Author Chat - Haldane B. Doyle - "Our Vitreous Womb"01:11:50

We have an awesome chat with Author/Biologist/Experimental Agriculturalist - Haldane B. Doyle about biology based scifi novel (Collection of 4 novellas) - "Our Vitreous Womb"

Find more about him on his website here: https://haldanebdoyle.com/

Within the smallest continent a boundless world is born…
Thirty thousand years ago the machine age consumed the world.
The only remaining resource was biology.
Now, the battle for the Earth is ongoing. Slave empires rule the largest continents -- bastions of technology from the machine age that stripped the planet millennia ago.
Hidden at the edge of the world a more vibrant people are rising to challenge them: a lineage who grasped the power of life and death to transmute the human heart.
Among them is Oji Anabasi -- podgy, hairy, sex-obsessed and terrified of death. In other words, a typical remnant sapiens on a planet long claimed by a new breed of people.
But what could primitive Oji offer such astonishing people?
His story, in four parts, is told through the eyes of his wilful mother, bittersweet nursemaid, steadfast wife and ardent advocate.
One relic human cannot change the course of evolution, but a single mutation might.

28 Mar 2024Monthly Book Club - "Godkiller" by Hanah Kaner01:15:31

Matt and Rachel discuss the short(ish) but awesome fantasy epic, "Godkiller" by Hanah Kaner. Refreshing change from 900 page mega-epics that are half filler with a novel that packs 900 pages of story into a third the size. With ten times as much representation as any other book we've read.

Get it, read it. You'll love it.

10 Feb 2023Wisdom of the Crocodiles or "The line that separates good and evil cuts through every human heart."01:14:56

We are joined by Erik Hanson of the "Cradle to the Grave" Podcast to discuss a little known Jude Law vampire movie called "Wisdom of the Crocodiles" or, more inanely, "Immortality." Although the movie in no way mentions immortality and thats generic and I'm not receiving it right now. I first saw this movie back when the internet was still delivered to your mailbox via discs in little red envelopes and I've had something of a soft spot for it every since. Jude Law and all the actors in the film do a good job lending a good amount of nuance and softness to what could have been an overly artistic and enigmatic plot. Listen to see if Erik agrees (spoiler alert: He might not.)

29 Dec 2023Author Chat - Dr. George Paxinos - "A River Divided"00:50:00

We had a lovely chat with Dr. George Paxinos about his one (and only) fiction novel after a career of writing for scientific publication.

Professor George Paxinos is the scientist who mapped the brain of humans and the principal experimental animals. He studied at Berkeley, McGill and Yale and was a visiting scientist at Cambridge, Oxford, Stanford and UCLA. As brain cartographers before him, he publishes his work principally in books, 57 in his case. His first, The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, is the most cited publication in neuroscience and, for three decades, the third most cited book in science.

The First edition of his Atlas of the Human Brain received The Award for Excellence in Publishing in Medical Science from The Association of American Publishers (AAP) and the latest edition the British Medical Association Illustrated Book Award. His Human Brainstem was a 2020 PROSE Award finalist (AAP).

After a 21-year effort, Paxinos wrote a novel in the environmental genre: Orwellian in its encapsulation of the quintessential moral and social dilemmas of the 21st century, A River Divided shows Paxinos is also a storyteller. Cloned ancient genes skip two thousand years to produce identical twins who are raised apart, unaware of the others existence, but destined to clash in an almighty battle for the Amazon.

The first in our informally themed February episodes where we talk about love and monsters and how sometimes, enjoying a movie that isn't afraid to be wholly romantic (even with the zombies) is exactly what you need. We watched and loved this Zombie movie with heart, Warm Bodies, which was originally released in 2013 and stares Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer.

31 Oct 2023Monthly Book Club - "Certain Dark Things" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia00:42:33

"Welcome to Mexico City, an oasis in a sea of vampires. Domingo, a lonely garbage-collecting street kid, is just trying to survive its heavily policed streets when a jaded vampire on the run swoops into his life. Atl, the descendant of Aztec blood-drinkers, is smart and beautiful - and very dangerous. Domingo is mesmerised."

15 Jan 2023Everything Everywhere All At Once or "Of all the places I could be, I just want to be here with you."01:18:21

The long awaited (by some anyways) episode on Everything Everywhere All At Once or the universally loved comedy hit of 2022 that Matt and Rachel....kind of didn't enjoy as much as the hype suggested they would. We get into the details on why we weren't wowed in the episode and we were so discombobulated by out strange dislike of this movie that we have invited Kate to join us for a special "In Defense" episode where she gets to defend the movie and convince us we're wrong.

15 Dec 2023"Thirst (1979)" - Vampires of 1979 - Part 6 of 801:05:41

"The descendant of Elizabeth Bathory is abducted by a cult of blood-drinking, self-proclaimed supermen who want her to join them."

We review the 1979 "Ozploitation" film, Thirst. Another 1979 Vampire offering and THIS time it's not DRACULA! WHO KNEW? This movie is worth a watch even if it's just for the vampire street cred. We didn't hate it but I'm sure in 1979 we would have loved it. (See our rant about survivorship bias)

31 Dec 2022Love Bites (1993) or "I don't know if I'm witnessing a phenomenon or a felony."01:21:04

Our last episode of 2022! How fitting that it's the 20th episode. We LOVED this movie and had, despite what I thought when I scheduled it, never seen it before! It tells the romantic, campy, unabashedly romantic tale of a woman who falls in love with the vampire (Adam Ant) who has been snoozing in her basement for the last 100 years. It's sweet, it's sappy, and it's full of borderline offensive 90's humor at all the right moments.

15 Mar 2024Spoiler Free Book Review - "The Day Tripper (2024)" - Character growth done to perfection00:39:24

I absolutely adored this book. I thought the concept was interesting, the execution was flawless, and the journey that Alex goes on was heart-breaking, inspiring, and believable. The conceit of time-travel is not new but the way that James Goodhand shapes it in this novel made it feel seamlessly fresh and integral to the story rather than a plot device to make an otherwise boring world intriguing. The main character, Alex, is living his life out of order and must unpack each day to put together scattered pieces of what has happened to him in the time between and how can he get back the future he'd hoped to have.

This novel would appeal to fans of fantasy, science fiction, or even real life fiction because, at it's core, it's a story about a man who was moving through life blind to the consequences of his choices until he is forced to confront them through chance and bizarre circumstance. What he does afterwards is where all the heart in this story lies and it will make you cry, scream, and cheer for Alex. Sometimes in the same chapter.

I had no idea from page to page what I was going to find and it was an absolute delight to live in mystery just like the main character and to watch him assemble the pieces of himself and create something better.

Read this book. Right now.

We discuss the 2001 psychological horror masterpiece, Frailty with Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe and Matthew McConaughey in which Bill Paxton good-naturedly leads his children towards their destiny of kidnapping and destroying "demons" because the trophy on his dresser told him too. Weird, brutal, and a work of art.

28 Apr 2023The Brave Little Toaster (1987) - "From Heartwarming to Horrifying"01:19:39

Let's unpack some of the trauma that led us to the quirky podcasters we are today and we owe no small part of that to this movie. It's so rife with repressed horrors that Matt took almost a week to make it through the movie (not an exaggeration). Listen in to find out why this "Pixar prototype" is nightmare fuel for ours and all subsequent generations.

Book referenced in podcast was "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo.

01 Jun 20232023 Pride Collection - "In the Flesh (Season 1 Ep.1)" - Let's Meet the Partially Deceased00:50:14

Our first introduction to the cast and characters of this wildly layered, emotionally engaging show about Partially Deceased Syndrome Suffers (don't call them Zombies!). Kieran heads home to rejoin his family as a reformed member of the previously completely dead and now only a little dead and the results are predictably rocky.

Trigger Warning: This episode of the Strange and Beautiful Book Club as well as the episode of In the Flesh contain discussions of suicide.

This episode of our podcast has a much more serious tone than many of our previous episodes because the themes that this show deal with resonate deeply in anyone who believes that all people deserved to be treated with kindness and respect like the sovereign individuals they are. Pride is about celebrating the vast spectrum of human sexual and social expression and we see and love each and every one of you so please continue to be who you are and love what you love each and every day in this month and beyond because you will always have a safe place with us.

05 May 2023Highlander 2: The Quickening (1991) - "Remember Highlander the first movie? Good, we don't either."01:10:36

We polish this absolutely amazing turd of a movie from 1991 in which everyone collectively worked together to create a sequel for a movie none of them had ever seen or heard of or had any interest in learning about. A delightful flash in the pan that came, burned of-so-dimly and then every fan everywhere collectively agreed to pretend never existed. Needless to say, we had a blast. Is Ramirez a Sayan? Maybe. Did Matt almost lose his mind trying to rationally how a subway car is capable of the speed of sound? Yes he did. Hope you all enjoy this as much as did recording it!

20 Jan 2023"Jennifer's Body (2009)" or "Do you get all your murder weapons at Home Depot?"02:19:03

We had more fun than a barrel full of murderous teenagers possessed by the Beast. We cover everything from the clinical definition of erotic to the fact that Matt, for once, is happy there isn't more nudity. This movie gave us a lot to chat about and CHAT WE DID. If what you've been missing in life is an hour and forty five minutes of Megan Fox snarking and snacking her way through the high school boy population then this movie is for you and so is this podcast.

04 Oct 2024"The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger" by Stephen King01:05:53

Rachel and Matt discuss "The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger" the first book in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King in this first installment of our spooky HORROR season of Strange and Beautiful Book Club!

In "The Gunslinger," the first book of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series, we follow Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger, as he pursues the mysterious Man in Black across a desolate, sprawling landscape. The narrative weaves through Roland's past and present, exploring his relentless quest for the Dark Tower, a mythical structure that is said to hold the key to the universe.

As Roland travels, he encounters various characters, including a young boy named Jake, who becomes entwined in his journey. Themes of fate, sacrifice, and the struggle between good and evil are prevalent as Roland grapples with his own morality and the burdens of his quest. The novel sets the stage for an epic saga filled with rich mythology and a blend of fantasy, Western, and horror elements.

21 Apr 2023Drunk Fantasy Review - "Dungeons and Dragons - Honor Among Thieves (2023)"00:58:57

We had another movie planned but things are wild right now and we decided that getting you all an episode this week was of greater moral significance than sticking to our usual rotation. Have high hopes of being back on schedule next week! But until then, please enjoy this review of the Dungeons and Dragons movie... drunk. If you're wondering what type of drunks we are you will be happy to know its both happy and philosophical which leads to us coining such phrases as:

-"Rum Rambling"

-"The Bullshit Spiral"

We also call out our favorite D&D podcast, Authors and Dragons. And discuss the importance of sincerity.

Please enjoy this episode and if you do, please give us a rating and review anywhere you listen.

15 Sep 2023Dune DEEP CUT - "Frank Herbert's Dune (2000)- Part 2 of 3" - Syfy Miniseries01:27:54

Syfy (Then 'SciFI' ) took on this audacious mini series adaptation in 2000 and, in our opinion, absolutely nailed it. Broken into three 1.5+ hour segments that mirror the three parts of the book but with essential, and totally perfect, changes.

30 Jan 2024Monthly Book Club: "Star Maker" by Olaf Stapledon01:30:35

May we all one day experience whatever chemically induced metaphysical journey Olaf went on in preparation for writing this book. Possibly while writing this book (as we surmise in the episode). Truly a unique, completely wild work of scientific speculation that must have been an absolute revolution in it's day. This is no pulp "Damsel in Space" drama like other 1930's science fiction. This is an epic journey beyond the bounds of human space, mortal consciousness, and all conceivable dimensions.

Olaf makes us feel things about nebulas I didn't know was possible.

Join us on this journey through time, space, and credibility with this months Strange and Beautiful Book Club - Book of the Month.

10 Mar 2023Wing Commander (1999) or "It's not faith, it's genetics!"01:30:01

It's naval battles... in space. With fighter ships named after swords and space ships shaped like submarines. There's a plot, we think, and someone acted but we couldn't say who. Obviously we freaking loved this movie. For more horrible movie recommendations and book commentary, follow us on Instagram or Patreon!

08 Mar 2024"Solaris (2002)" - George Clooney shows off his acting and his ass-ets01:15:11

The 2002 film "Solaris" is a psychological science fiction drama directed by Steven Soderbergh, based on the novel of the same name by Stanisław Lem. The movie stars George Clooney as Dr. Chris Kelvin, a psychologist sent to a space station orbiting the mysterious planet Solaris. Upon arrival, Kelvin encounters strange phenomena, including the appearance of his deceased wife, Rheya, played by Natascha McElhone. As Kelvin grapples with his own guilt and grief over Rheya's death, he confronts the enigmatic forces at play on the station and on the planet itself. The film explores themes of memory, love, and the nature of reality, all set against the backdrop of a haunting and atmospheric space station. Soderbergh's "Solaris" is a contemplative and visually striking adaptation of Lem's novel, known for its introspective tone and minimalist style.

Did we like it or were we just in it for nude scenes? (George Clooney naked eating noodles isn't a hard sell). Was it a better adaptation than the 1972 movie? Did anyone read the book or did they all just get the gist and go full into "erotic problems in space" as Lem put it?

17 Mar 2023Krull (1983) - "Rocks in our pockets and a tombstone over our heads."01:55:10

The 30 million dollar (roughly 90 million today) fantasy epic that is the very definition of style over substance. Lets face it, a million went to the main actor's pants and we all know it. An epic tale of the triumph of love over everything, including giant magical space beasts who fly mountains around the void and kidnap princesses for kicks. There's horses that can shoot fire from their hooves, sword-lasers (Not Laser-swords, this isn't THAT movie), and a lady who redefines the meaning of emo. I mean sure, you're emo but are you trap yourself in a spider web to stew in your feelings for all eternity emo? I think not.

A quick spoiler free review of "The Curse of King Midas" and then our chat with Colleen HERSELF about this book and a little bit about writing and writing advice in general.

From Colleen's website:

THE CURSE OF KING MIDAS IS REAL.
In the ancient kingdom of Phrygia, tribal boy Karem Savas thirsts for revenge against King Sargon II, the man who killed his mother and kidnapped his sister. A deal with the dark goddess of the underworld propels him to a powerful position of leadership with a mighty army and thousands of loyal subjects. Crowned as King Midas, he rules from the prosperous capital city of Gordium, where the future shines bright for his two royal children, Prince Anchurus and Princess Zoe.

But Midas is unable to shake his traumatic past. As his deal with the dark goddess turns sour, he seeks help from another, never realizing it will be his undoing. Burdened with a cursed power and floundering against the savvy King Sargon II, Midas must right his wrongs and save his children before it is too late.

Packed with myth, magic, and vengeance, this captivating tale of King Midas begins the new mythological fantasy series from Colleen M. Story.

We ponder such intriguing questions as, does he have bones or cartilege and what equipment is he working with (if you know what I mean!) Winky Face Emoji.

22 Sep 2023Dune DEEP CUT - "Frank Herbert's Dune (2000)- Part 3 of 3" - Syfy Miniseries01:11:08

Syfy (Then 'SciFI' ) took on this audacious mini series adaptation in 2000 and, in our opinion, absolutely nailed it. Broken into three 1.5+ hour segments that mirror the three parts of the book but with essential, and totally perfect, changes.

03 May 2024Book - "Planet of the Apes" by Pierre Boulle01:11:16

On this month's Book episode:

"Planet of the Apes" by Pierre Boulle is a science fiction novel that tells the story of a group of astronauts who land on a distant planet where intelligent apes are the dominant species and humans are primitive and mute. The protagonist, Ulysse Mérou, along with two other astronauts, find themselves captured by the apes and treated as experimental subjects.

As Ulysse navigates this strange society, he forms bonds with some of the apes, including the sympathetic chimpanzee scientist, Zira, and her fiancé, Cornelius. Through his experiences, Ulysse learns about the societal hierarchy of the apes and their disdain for humans.

14 Oct 2024Bonus - Ger Can Get It: "The Second Gerthering Trip Recap!"02:43:12

This is a long one, folks.
Tune in to find out what we were up to in Stratford, Ontario, and whether our grand experiment in overdosing on GWD content worked as desired.
Did we see His Mighty Gerness in a play? Did our souls leave our bodies? Does Cavan Biggio still play for the Toronto Blue Jays? Did I embarrass us all? Did we eat one single meal the entire time we were in Toronto and the surrounding suburbs?
The answers to these questions and more await you, just the other side of the play button.

19 May 2023Soldier (1998) - "A fallen hero has one last battle to fight"01:50:01

Kurt Russell stars as Todd, a now obsolete soldier who must carve out a new life on a trash planet but finds himself thwarted at every turn by his utter lack of people skills. Luckily, it's his talent for destruction that ends up winning the hearts of the community of refugees (those that survive at least)

27 Feb 2024Bonus - "The Unknown Best: Book 1" by Matt Wilkening00:25:04

A book recommendation from Rachel and Matt! The Unknown Best: Book 1 by Matt Wilkening! Get it here!

Do you have problems? Good. Michael Malbon doesn’t, and he hates it. His supernatural synesthesia confuses smell with normative information, so Mike always knows what to do to produce the best outcome despite not even knowing what the best outcome is.

But success is a paradise, and a paradise which one cannot leave is a prison. So when Mike finds himself mysteriously thrust into a war-ravaged far future, occupying the body of a hapless highschool girl with no knowledge or understanding of the world around him, he does what he always does— turns lemons into lemonade.

Mike flees from the utopia of his causal nose into the dystopia of the world around him. He adopts the identity of his new body in perverse defiance of the mystery it poses. He enlists in the future-military to pilot a giant mech against the bug-monsters and the killer robots. He befriends the friends of the highschooler whose life he usurped, and uses them as the brick and mortar of a fate which he architects unknowingly. He’s unhinged. He’s sociopathic. But can he find a reason not to be when dystopia and utopia are one and the same?

17 Nov 2023Love At First Bite (1979) - The Vampires of 1979 - Part 2 of 800:52:30

The second of 8 vampire movies released in 1979 which I'm going to tentatively call the "year of the disco vampire". This movie was fun, punchy, packed with pop culture references and some really dated lines that we loved anyways. Well worth a watch!

12 Jan 2024Dune DEEP CUT - "Dune: Children of Dune" by Frank Herbert01:40:05

The next installment in our long form Dune series. In this episode we discuss the sequel to Dune Messiah, Dune: Children of Dune. If you've heard it's no bueno and to just stop at Dune, don't listen to that noise. Frank Herbert wrote parts of Messiah and Children of Dune before he ever wrote the first book. You can't understand Dune completely unless you understand that the first three books are really a play in three acts.

01 Mar 2024"Solaris (1972)" - Less about the planet, more about the hot wife.01:05:47

"Solaris" is a 1972 Soviet science fiction film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, based on the novel of the same name by Stanisław Lem. The film follows psychologist Kris Kelvin, played by Donatas Banionis, who travels to a space station orbiting the mysterious planet Solaris. There, he encounters strange phenomena that seem to be manifestations of his own memories and desires. As Kelvin delves deeper into the mysteries of Solaris, he grapples with questions of identity, love, and the nature of reality. The film also stars Natalya Bondarchuk as Hari, Kelvin's deceased wife who mysteriously reappears on the station. Tarkovsky's "Solaris" is renowned for its philosophical themes, atmospheric cinematography, and meditative pacing.

Did we agree? Do we like the "meditative pacing" or is that just another name for dragging on endlessly for no particular reason? Was it a good adaptation?

21 Jul 2023World War Z (2013) vs. Shaun of the Dead (2004)01:10:42

A fun exploration of two movies with deceptively different approaches to the zombie movie medium. We discuss the inconsistent tension mess of World War Z and the unintelligent brilliance of Shaun of the Dead and how it relates to the blatant nostalgia grab of seemingly every movie recently released in theaters. Rambling, some might say, shambolic commentary as always. Enjoy!

07 Jul 2023"World War Z" by Max Brooks - An Oral History of the Zombie War 01:04:31

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8908.World_War_Z

Definitely one of our favorite if not THE FAVORITE of the zombie books we've read. The shear amount of research and thought work that had to go into this novel is astounding. Told in interview form with a unique perspective and voice for every "interview" character, this novel reads like a treatise on exactly what might happen during a world wide zombie outbreak. Are there some hopeful and optimistic parts, yes. Do we love it all the more for it? Absolutely yes. Does it lack cheap drama and classic zombie tension tropes? Yes. 23 Feb 2024"Radius (2017)" - Neat Sweet Indie Suspense Thriller01:02:39

Rachel and Matt mostly talk about "Radius" from 2017 but also sort of talk about a lot of unrelated stuff too.

From Wikipedia:

Radius is a 2017 Canadian science fiction thriller film directed and written by Caroline Labrèche and Steeve Léonard. It stars Diego Klattenhoff, Charlotte Sullivan, and Brett Donahue. Klattenhoff and Sullivan play two survivors of a car accident who discover that one causes the death of anyone who comes within a certain radius of him, and the other has the ability to nullify this effect.

We discuss this near future post apocalyptic (kind of) dystopian film with lots of martial arts and guns. So many guns. 17 Feb 2023Enemy Mine (1985) or "Your Mickey Mouse is one big stupid dope!"01:51:26

Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. are pure magic in a movie that takes on one of the most quintessential life lessons that we should all embrace: no prejudice can survive understanding. Davidge is a space-fighter for the human army that is embroiled in a territorial war with an enemy known as the Drac. When Davidge is marooned on a planet with an enemy fighter he is forced to confront a Drac in person for the first time. A beautifully written, poignant, brilliantly acted and dear-to-my-heart Scifi about how the most powerful force in the galaxy isn't hate, but love.

22 Mar 2024"Anguish (1987)" - There's mommy issues and then there's MOMMY ISSUES00:48:06

"Anguish" is a 1987 horror film directed by Bigas Luna. The movie revolves around a mentally unstable mother, who hypnotizes her son John to commit murder and harvest eyes for her collection. The mother is portrayed as a controlling and manipulative figure, and John becomes increasingly disturbed as he struggles with his mother's influence. The film explores themes of psychological manipulation, the blurred lines between reality and illusion, and the consequences of unchecked obsession. As the story unfolds, viewers are drawn into a surreal and unsettling narrative that challenges perceptions of sanity and morality.

27 Oct 2023Dune DEEP CUT - "Dune: Messiah" by Frank Herbert01:57:15

The next installment in our long form Dune series. In this episode we discuss the sequel to Dune, Dune: Messiah. If you've heard it's no bueno and to just stop at Dune, don't listen to that noise. Frank Herbert wrote parts of Messiah and Children of Dune before he ever wrote the first book. You can't understand Dune completely unless you understand that the first three books are really a play in three acts.

14 Jun 2024"Creatures of Light and Darkness" by Roger Zelazny 00:56:40

Our late book club episode for May about "Creatures of Light and Darkness" by Roger Zelazny. "Creatures of Light and Darkness" by Roger Zelazny is a science fiction/fantasy novel that blends elements of Egyptian mythology with a futuristic setting. AKA the origin of the sentiment that too many dicks spoil the soup.

Did we love it? Was it readable? Was it's highly praised rich imagery (a man burns off his own dick with a red hot robot hand so...) and non linear narrative worth it? Did we find it though provoking or rage inducing? Could we find anything nice to say at all?

I'll let you guess but you can and should just go ahead and listen to the episode to find out.
