Sally details the stories of how both cats found her, developed their bonds, their cancer diagnoses and treatments. We talk about how those tremendous experiences led Sally to create a nonprofit to help other Pet Parents dealing with cancer in their cats. Sally and I also discuss the grief we feel when dealing with the loss of our pets. From anticipatory grief when our pets become ill and need medical treatment, to the actual loss of our fur babies. I hope you enjoy this incredible conversation and emotional experience between the two of us.

01 Nov 2022My First Foster Kitten Binx00:26:47

Send us a text

Trigger Warning! This episode discusses death, grief and loss, and emotional stories of pet loss.

In this episode, I (your host Julie Marty-Pearson) talk about my experience fostering for the first time. I currently volunteer for my local animal shelter and recently decided I wanted to try fostering a kitten for the first time. I was given Bryce, aka Binx, to bring home and care for. He was a 5-week old kitten found alone, outside. When he was brought to the shelter he was covered in fleas and severely malnourished. He was dehydrated and anemic from all the fleas. My job as his Foster Mom was to give me a safe, comfortable, and loving home. I fed him, give him his medicine (iron) and monitored his progress and behavior. In this unedited episode, I tell the story of Binx and how the 5 days he lived with me changed my life forever.

My local animal shelter is Kern County Animal Services, located in Bakersfield, CA. To learn more about them and the services they provide, click the links below.

09 Dec 2022The Power of Connection Between People and Horses00:51:41

Send us a text

Emma Davis is the CEO and founder of Mikko's Choice, an animal rescuer and advocate, and an equestrian. She has a lifelong love of animals, and her first soul dog, a wolf hybrid named Mo and mustang Mikko have been the catalysts for her passion and advocacy.
Emma has had a lifelong love of animals, which was kickstarted by her first rescue, a wolf hybrid named Mo. After initially meeting a wild mustang at the ranch she worked on, she fell off another horse and broke her back and had to leave the ranch all together. After she healed, she found the same wild horse she had rescued prior to her injury, now on Craigslist after bouncing from home to home and was in bad physical and mental shape. Emma adopted him and named him Mikko. She worked with trainers and eventually took over his training herself, and after two years of hard work, Mikko got to the point where he could go on trail rides and help other troubled horses. Emma learned from Mikko that any animal can overcome its trauma and issues with love and patience. He also inspired her to start the cbd company Mikko’s Choice, which produces cbd products for horses and other animals.

19 Jan 2023Let's Talk Compassion Fatigue, Cat Behavior and More!00:43:50

Send us a text

Welcome to another episode of the Story of My Pet podcast! Today, I've been joined by Molly Kelsey from Auckland, New Zealand. Molly is an avid foster and former vet nurse who has worked with animals for over 10 years in companion animal practice and volunteering in both New Zealand and overseas. Last year, she completed her postgrad studies in feline behavior and now runs her own cat behavior consulting business. Molly lives with her partner and their rats, and in her free time, she enjoys listening to true crime podcasts, and doing embroidery. She has a lot of experience in the animal industry, and she'll be sharing her story with us today.

Molly’s work as the Cat Counsellor centers around teaching owners to understand their cats better and help them thrive in their environment. Molly started fostering animals when she was 17 and worked in the veterinary field for three years before taking a break due to illness. She decided to become a cat behaviorist after seeing a lot of cats suffer mentally and their owners not understanding why, as well as the lack of qualified people to help in this area.

You can contact Molly and follow her on social media via the links below.

Have you ever wondered how a simple passion for animals can turn into a life-changing journey? Join us as we chat with Melissa Brunson, Executive Director of Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue, and discover how her love for animals and desire to give back to the community led her to become an integral part of this impactful organization. Melissa shares her inspiring story of finding Marley's Mutts through social media and how she started off as a volunteer before rising to her current role.

In today's episode, we dive deep into the challenging world of animal rescue, particularly the issue of overcrowded shelters. Melissa discusses the incredible work of Mutt Movers, a program that transports rescued dogs from overcrowded shelters to other areas, even as far as Washington and across the border to Canada. We also tackle the stigma around shelter dogs and how the majority of these animals are in need of a loving home due to owners who didn't take responsibility for their pets.

Finally, we explore the heartwarming story of Melissa's fur baby, Zoe, a Brindle pit bull mix from Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue and emphasize the importance of breed education in breaking down stigmas and finding these dogs their forever homes. This episode is a must-listen for animal lovers and advocates who want to learn more about the ins and outs of animal rescue and how everyone can do their part, no matter how small, to support organizations like Marley's Mutts and help save the lives of animals in need.

28 Apr 2024Securing a Future for Our Fur Families: Planning for Our Pet's Care00:21:29

Send us a text

Taking care of our pets is something most pet parents take great pride in; however, we don’t always plan for the “what if’s”. Thinking about what would happen to our pets if we were no longer able to care for them is SO important. Yet, no one wants to think about death and dying, but if something happened to you and you were in the hospital or worse, who will care for your pets? I, Julie Marty-Pearson, dive into this topic with my friend, fellow podcaster, and Fur Mom Rebecca Johnson.

Rebecca shares her heartfelt journey through the loss of her husband and the subsequent intertwining of joy and challenge with her canine companions mirrors the complex bond we all share with our pets. As we unraveled Rebecca's story, we were reminded of the individual personalities pets have, how they align with ours, and the importance of cherishing these connections, especially during life's unexpected turns.

This episode transcends mere pet tales, touching upon the profound topic of pet contingency planning, a subject close to Rebecca’s heart given her own battle with cancer. She opens up about her own arrangements for her dogs, Vegas and Caroline, fostering an important conversation about securing our pets' futures. 15 Jan 2025Animal Voices Amplified A New Season of Heartwarming Pet Stories00:07:15

Send us a text

Welcome back to the Story of My Pet Podcast!
After a brief hiatus, I'm thrilled to return with a fresh season filled with heartwarming pet stories and spotlights on remarkable animal organizations. As your host, Julie Marty-Pearson, I'm eager to share how this podcast has not only grown but also profoundly impacted my own life and the lives of countless animals.
Over the past three years, this podcast has evolved from sharing personal pet anecdotes to becoming a platform for animal lovers worldwide. We've explored the critical issues facing animal rescues and shelters, emphasizing the importance of adoption and fostering in saving lives across communities, states, and even countries.
A Journey of Growth and Impact
My journey with this podcast has been transformative. It's opened my eyes to the complexities of animal welfare and the urgent need for support in the face of overwhelming shelter overcrowding. This realization has spurred me to take action in my own life, including:

  • Volunteering at my local shelter
  • Becoming a kitten foster mom
  • Adopting one of my foster kittens
  • Assisting with off-site dog adoption events

These experiences have deepened my commitment to animal advocacy and reinforced the power of sharing these stories.

Responding to Current Crises
As wildfires ravage Southern California, the need for animal rescue support has become even more pressing. In response, I'm excited to announce the launch of our new merchandise shop. A portion of the proceeds from select items will be donated to organizations on the frontlines, including Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue and Pasadena Humane. Your can view and purchase the fundraiser designs in my Your Story Matters Official Store.

What to Expect This Season
This season promises to be our most impactful yet. Here's what you can look forward to:

  • Inspiring stories of pet adoption and rescue
  • Interviews with leaders in animal wel

In Episode 6 of The Story of My Pet Podcast I welcome my guest, Carolyn Smith-Keune. Carolyn, a Doctor of Marine and Molecular Biology, has worked as a marine biologist on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia for almost a decade. Later in her career she switched to working in Aquaculture Genetics research when she started her family, where she manages a genetics research lab (predominately animal and plant genetics). Currently on leave of absence to heal from past trauma and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), Carolyn soon turned to the family dog Gigi for support. Having always been a dog, fish and coral person, she has been strongly bonded to the animals in her life. Gigi, a red poodle, utilized her canine instinct to realize the support and therapy she could provide Carolyn. Now never far from her side, Gigi will become an officially trained service dog in the coming months.

The organization we discuss in this episode, which Carolyn and her family have rescued a dog through. The Angel Paws Inc Animal Rescue located in Townsville, NQ. You can follow and learning more about them on Instagram via the link below.
