18 Feb 2023 | How To Evaluate Your Team Better | 00:21:20
One of the most important tools to improve your home staging business is conducting regular Employee Evaluations.
In my corporate life, I experienced a ton of evaluations and the most effective were the ones where it was a two way conversation with a manager who had been great at giving me feedback well before the formal evaluation process.
AKA nothing was a surprise.
By creating an environment where feedback is just a daily part of your organization, the better your business will be.
And by creating regular check-ins you increase your visibility on your business as a whole.
You will have greater visibility on how your services, your systems and your processes impact your team.
And you will have greater visibility on team members who are struggling or simply not a right fit for your company.
All of this helps you make better decisions, faster for your company.
In this week's episode, I'm sharing 3 ways that you can evaluate your team that are super simple and easy for you to conduct.

15 Apr 2023 | What's A Lead Magnet? And 11 Ways To Use One To Grow An Amazing Home Staging Business | 00:25:31
08Having a lead magnet is an important part of your marketing strategy.
One of the unexpected surprises I had, when I was growing my staging business, is that I actually had to be the Chief Marketing Officer even ahead of being the Lead Stager in my business. And as you grow your business, the scale will be tipped for a period of time in the direction of spending way more time marketing than staging.
In the beginning, I really resented the amount of time I spent marketing because it never felt like there was a direct return on that time. I had no idea that clients don’t start calling right away after a marketing encounter. But what I have learned is that there is typically a delay between our marketing efforts and getting new clients and that delay is totally normal in a business. Totally. Flipping. Normal.
That means you really need to embrace digital marketing because it takes time and consistency to nurture the seeds that turn into clients. Lucky for us, with the internet, we don't have to do all of the heavy lifting ourselves.
You can rely on one of my favorite digital marketing strategies–the Lead Magnet. It may not sound sexy, but listen in and it just might become your new favorite marketing buddy too!

Creating financial results in your home staging business starts with setting the right price for your services.

Figuring it out is actually easy. It takes a little bit of thought, research and math.
Getting your mind wrapped around what the math tells you is quite another.
That is where most of our work lies.
In today's episode, we dive into the math and the mindset of setting the right price for your staging business. Enjoy!

No one is born leading a staging business (or any other), so I understand how hard it may sometimes be and why even though we love our businesses, this part may not be our everyday love. Just like in every other organization where people are brought together and will experience some tension, your staging business is no different. Rather, what differs is the role you play as the leader. When different personalities and work styles clash, when poor communication leads to a stream of misunderstandings, missed deadlines, and conflict, what do you do? From mine, other Staging CEOs experiences and recent reads on how to solve such challenges, let’s talk about how to turn your team frustrations into your greatest opportunity for growth.

06 May 2023 | 4 Ways To Create A Successful (and fun!) Home Staging Consultation | 00:29:21
After more than a decade in business, one of my favorite things to hear is that our clients think our home staging consultation is fun! I love hearing this because I specifically designed our home staging consultation (we call our home staging consultation a Styling Evaluation) process to create fun and empowerment. And I did this intentionally.
When I first started my home staging business, staging was still new in my area. Most people had no idea what staging was or what the process looked like. This was great because I could carve my own path and I quickly learned that I wanted my home staging consultation to be a feel-good process for my clients. I wrote about the childhood experience that informs how my team and I talk to our clients here and here.
The reason I place so much importance on having a great consultation is all about energy. So much of what we do involves putting positive energy and momentum into the world. If we don't leave our clients feeling positive, they will be less likely to be successful. Just a fact. They will resist implementing their staging. So I cannot stress enough how important it is to protect our seller's energy and keep as focused as possible on bringing joy into the staging process. So let's dive into 4 ways our team accomplishes this!

Effective financial planning is essential for any home staging business looking to scale sustainably. Rather than worry about how to afford your inventory or be limited by insufficient funds, strategic financing can be a tool that helps you grow. I have seen many staging business owners rely on credit cards or cash reserves to purchase furniture, but this approach can only create financial strain. Today, I speak with Rod; a financing expert with over 30 years of experience, with a strong focus on home staging. Rod provides a deep dive into how staging businesses can leverage financing options to build their inventory, optimize cash flow, and strategically invest in their growth. He explains why staging inventory should be treated as a long-term investment rather than an ongoing expense and outlines how to access funding without negatively impacting your business liquidity. Is your staging business being held back by inventory costs? This conversation may be what you need for new growth.

Most staging business owners have experienced it—the excitement of landing a new project quickly overshadowed by scheduling complexities. What should be straightforward becomes a logistical challenge of coordinating teams, access details, and client expectations. The reality is that scheduling vacant stagings can be more manageable with the right approach. It's not about eliminating complexity entirely, but creating systems that make it predictable and efficient. In this episode, I talk about a comprehensive five-step system for transforming your scheduling processes. This framework has helped staging businesses create consistency for their teams while setting clear expectations with clients, ultimately leading to more profitable operations and less administrative stress. 23 Nov 2024 | How to Set Business Boundaries that Stick | 00:26:58
Yet another vulnerable episode today! My staging lead once called quits — my fault, because my staging business was all too accommodating. I - and technically her too, would scramble to rearrange weekend plans or even work beyond and outside office hours to meet last - minute client demands. Yep! That often happened. Until it felt like the business was running us, instead of us it. A situation you might be in if you have no business boundaries in place. But here’s the good news: setting clear deliberate boundaries, backed with policies can change everything. People will make their requests! From the most mundane to the exceptions, business boundaries will help you make decisions or not even have to think about them at all because your policies already took care of that. Whether it is figuring out what boundaries and policies to put in place, tips for communicating them, and how to navigate clients who constantly ignore your policies, today’s episode goes into all the details. Our thoughts about losing a client by having policies hardly matter. Listen in to learn how to make boundaries that create a solid foundation for a business that thrives.

18 Nov 2023 | How A Project Management Tool Is Amazing For Your Staging Business | 00:26:04
I have seen several business owners (not only in the staging industry) who are overwhelmed with the countless tasks and processes involved in running their businesses. But that is not only what lacking a system does to your business. For example, in mine, I made my first five-figure as a one-man team the month I started to implement a standard operating procedure. With a team, you have more to do. You have to work with multiple people on different projects with different end goals, but with the same steps. In that case, rather than be confused or always spend time figuring out what to do, establishing a workflow cadence for every process in your business is one way to stay on top of your games and be organized. I will be sharing what our workflow is like for several processes at Rethink Home Interiors, as well as how my chosen project management tool works for us. But remember - Whether you seek new ways to use your project management tool or are just about to choose one, finding the perfect tool is all about what works best for you and your specific needs.

I’ve seen it come up in my coaching sessions and even experienced it myself—just this morning at the gym! Seeing someone do something different that I perceived as higher than mine made me doubt my own routine. But then I had to remind myself why I was doing what I did, while considering my own fitness journey. And here’s the deal: we're all on different stages of our own journeys. In life and in running a staging business. To help you navigate comparison, I’m breaking down the four stages of competence and how they apply to your staging business. 10 Aug 2024 | How To Make Your Business Systems More Memorable | 00:19:06
If there's one thing that stuck with me from my undergrad classes, it is the application of FORMULAs. They are the cheat code for solving equations and they also function for simplifying business operations. I know my team is not more magical than anybody else's team, but we have, over the years, done a pretty good job of implementing systems. How? By making the process as seamless as possible with memorable formulas, acronyms, and quirky nicknames. This unconventional method has not just helped us stay organized, but it has significantly cut down on decision fatigue, making up for when our brains are tired and consequently boosting our efficiency. I have seen how useful a creative and memorable approach to streamlining business operations is. By applying this strategy, I hope you'll be able to say the same.

Systems in business are the equivalent of habits in life. If you think of systems in this way, they automatically begin to make more sense. The beautiful thing is you can tackle creating and maintaining systems the same way you would in creating and maintaining a habit—start with improving the smallest thing, repeat it over and over, get back on track quickly when you lapse. 26 Oct 2024 | Boost Your Business Growth by Using a Project Management Tool | 00:26:04
If you have to think about where to start to execute your staging or other projects as they come, then it is high time to do away with that limiting act. Limiting I say? Yes it is. I know that from making my first five-figure the month I started to implement a standard operating procedure. Whether you are in the growth or accelerate phase, if you do not have one already, my top recommendation is to establish a project management tool and system now. For mundane tasks, consistency helps. For a staging business with repeated actions, you can imagine how consistency in these processes can lead to a faster, smoother project completion. Rather than try to scheme out a workflow for every project or meeting, you can kick start each one from the same place, establishing a routine that can be finetuned until it perfectly serves your needs. Moreover you can fully utilize the features of a project management - task assignment, tags, and setting priorities to keep your team (or yourself) on track. You’ll learn to simplify tasks, reduce redundancy, and ultimately scale your business faster by maximizing a project management tool like I do.

Welcome to the beginning of our exciting episodes for 2024! It's raining "goals" at this time of the year, everywhere. "How to set goals", "Things to keep in mind when setting your goals" etc. But that's not where it ends, right? In fact, setting goals is just the beginning. According to statistics, 92% of people fail to achieve their goals. For the other 8%, I am sure it is not because goals are fun to ace. As a geeky neuroscientist, I attribute that to their understanding of the intricacies of the human brain and how it plays a pivotal role in setting and executing goals. Simply put, they are just the minute percentage of people who fully understand and maximize the brain-hacking secret sauce of success - which I'm here to spill the beans on today! Have you just newly set goals for your staging business this year? Grab your favorite beverage, get comfortable, and join me on this brain-blowing adventure into the world of goal achievement. No! This isn't one of the “be available 24/7 or shelve your child's birthday party hoping that this client finally shows up after missing three appointments in a row” kinda advice. Why? Because they are all a recipe for disaster. Based on my personal experience of this no gain venture, I would not recommend you starting or upholding this kind of unsustainable business practice. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that one of the most important client acquisition and retention strategies is a streamlined process that makes it easy to work with you. Whether in neuroscience or through the real-life examples that I share today, you'll see how predictability is essential in reducing stress, increasing your client satisfaction, and at the same time boosting your referral rate. 14 Jan 2023 | 4 Simple Steps To Selling Your Staging Services Way Better | 00:26:04
I don't know about you, but I didn't have a clue how much sales and marketing would be involved in starting and growing my real estate staging business.
I honestly thought the minute I told a Realtor that I was a Stager, they would feel like their prayers were answered and they would hire me instantly and often!
Wow, was I wrong.
And I spent a lot of time feeling frustrated, confused by this.
I went days, weeks and months with a super quiet calendar.
And I was frankly just annoyed at the whole resistance to hiring me.
But as I began to gain slow, and I mean sllllllllllllooooowwww, traction I had a huge epiphany.
I had been marketing based on what I do as a Stager, not the problems I solve as a Stager.
Not that there's anything wrong with it but "helping sellers sell faster and make more money" isn't super effective.
In today's podcast I break down why that's the case.

People ask the darndest things, don't they? Can you stage tomorrow? Can you give me a discount because I'll bring you lots of work? Can I pick the furniture you use? If you're in business long enough, you'll definitely hear at least one of those. You may also encounter scenarios like, 4 feet of snow in the driveway leading to the house you're supposed to stage, construction teams still working in the house, dumpsters blocking your access. And on and on... These times can totally stress us out and even annoy us or make us feel devalued. But...there is a better way. We can plan for these things, maybe understand where their coming from a little better and we can create communication plans that we can dust off in times of need that are neutral, grounded and effective. Today I'm going Unstaged on the podcast. Unscripted and riffing on what I see as a pitfall when newer business owners get advice from those of us who have been running our businesses for longer. We simply forget. We forget what it's like to be where you are. And, while well intended, we can give advice that isn't realistic for a newer business owner. Listen in to find out why. 24 Dec 2022 | 3 Simple Steps To Make More Money In Your Staging Business | 01:08:59
Making money at every phase of your staging business is simple.
You make money by focusing on Money Generating Activities.
At each phase of business, those MGA's are slightly different.
In the growth phase you need to be out meeting all of the humans.
Growing your self-concept as a staging business owner.
Learning how to talk about what you do. Staying in touch.
Developing the mental stamina to keep doing this over and over again in the face of little or no results.
As you enter Accelerate, your MGAs are all about delegating and creating efficiency.
Stepping aside. Learning how to hire. Learning who to hire. And learning how to let go.
As you enter Leverage, your MGAs are about delegating, efficiency and protecting the revenue.
But at every level, you will repeatedly focus on 3 key things.
Cultivating a habit of working on the specific MGAs for your phase of business.
Combining your real world and online marketing.
Creating (or refining) a revenue plan to support your growth.
This awareness makes you a more purposeful business owner.
This awareness simplifies all of your decision making.
Today's podcast walks you through these three things.

03 Aug 2024 | How To Understand Your Changing Role In Your Staging Business | 00:21:07
Whatever level you are in right now, you are filling a job description inside of your staging business. It could be a low level, but I am absolutely sure that as you strategically market and grow your business, you graduate into a high level experienced employee who takes on less technical roles. But the hierarchy is not one to be jumped. To transition into the hands off ownership status and lifestyle, understanding the evolution of leadership roles within your staging business is very important. Using the case study from my private coaching client who was feeling burnt out and stuck in the Technician role, I explain what the four levels of business ownership are, how to recognize when it's time to ascend to the next level, and strategies for transitioning to the highest leadership role. Hopefully, this episode spurs you to reflect on your current business stage and consider the necessary steps for strategic growth and leadership development.

21 Jan 2023 | 5 Easy Ways To Use An Email List To Grow Your Staging Business | 00:22:37
Using an email list to grow my staging business has been, what I call, auto-magical.
Seriously, it's like having a rainbow unicorn on staff.
Here is why.
Your biggest job as the CEO of your staging business is filling your pipeline with clients who will buy from you.
So you must meet people.
In our business that typically starts in person.
The next step is staying in front of them on a regular basis so they remember you when their need for a staging company arises.
That's where your email list comes in.
Email is the very best tool to stay in front of your ideal prospective clients in a super non-salesy way and that grows your authority as an expert and your "know, like and trust" factor.
And with an email list some of this can be done in an automated way. #cuetheconfetti!
But it can do even more than that.
Listen in to find out 5 ways you can use an email list to grow your staging business (and the last one...easiest hack on the face of the planet!)

21 Oct 2023 | How To Successfully Create A Weekly Workflow Cadence | 00:19:02
As staging business owners, we have processes and systems that frequently occur. One for me is recording this podcast. It was my design assistant's wedding day at the time of recording this episode. But I still needed to record a podcast for you because I have a weekly cadence around when I record my podcast. Whether you are in the Growth or Accelerate phase, there are varying ranges of tasks for you in your staging business, and only implementing a well-defined cadence is what can help you create a structured and productive workflow that drives growth and success. If you have been operating without boundaries (which I did for two years), a lack of organization and efficiency, a weekly cadence is here to save! Listen in to find out how I came about establishing a weekly cadence even before hiring a team, why you should, how you can start yours, and the resources you need (all found in Rethink You Accelerate). Trust me, establishing a weekly workflow cadence is one of the most valuable things you can do in your business.

11 Mar 2023 | How To Never Worry About The Real Estate Market Again | 00:19:38
You can have a thriving staging business regardless of the real estate market. In the book Good To Great by Jim Collins he talks about companies going from good to great. There were several factors that helped companies make that transition but one is super relevant to our staging businesses. They were realistic about market forces impacting their business negatively and they made plans to adjust. Based on this, I'd like to offer something. Because the real estate market is sensitive to seasonal shifts and larger economic shifts, you need to plan strategically to have a thriving business. One that brings in revenue year-round regardless of what is happening in the real estate market. In today's podcast, I dive into some ways that you can plan and prepare but also what you can do right now if your business is slower than you would like. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN FROM THIS EPISODE:

29 Oct 2022 | How to Create Boundary Alignment For Your Home Staging Business | 00:26:58
One of the joys of owning a Staging business is that you meet so many humans. And one of the challenges of owning a Staging business is that you meet so many humans! We will be constantly working with people who haven't worked with a stager before so they may have misinformed expectations about staging (I'm looking at you HGTV!) or they may flat out just be demanding or miserable people. They may not understand that you can't install a vacant tomorrow when you have just seen the property for the first time today. They may ask if they can come to your warehouse to choose the furniture for their project. They may ask you to come back and replace the coffee table because they aren't a fan of that style. Either way, boundaries are going to (or should) become your business's best friend very quickly. And I say your business's friend because you are not your business. Your business needs boundaries even if you aren't great at having them in your personal life (no shame, I'm a recovering people pleaser!) In this week's podcast, I'm diving deep into boundary and policy alignment for your business. I'll be giving you food for thought about the kinds of boundaries and policies you may want to put into place, how you communicate them, and what to do if clients don’t honor your boundaries.

25 May 2024 | How To Batch Your Content Creation | 00:32:17
I had an investor on my mailing list for 3 years before he ever reached out for business. That long? Yes, it was. For me, what's intriguing is not the number of years he took him to try out our staging services. What is, is that if there had been radio silence from me through those years, that's a prospective client (or even more) lost. However, since daily creating content for 3 years is something I did not do nor will recommend, batch content creation is the way to staying in the face of your ideal clients consistently and without getting burnt out. In today's workshop style episode, we'll explore how batching can help you maximize your limited marketing time, keep your name top of mind, and nurture relationships with prospective clients. From here, you can start to create a content library for keeping in touch where you need it most.

What if you could handle dicey client interactions with confidence and calm, without the stress or frustration? As a staging business owner, you know that you’ll encounter all kinds of personalities. With that comes clients and team members who might unintentionally cross boundaries or push your limits. Most of the time, it’s not personal—they may just forget what they agreed to or don’t fully understand your process. Rather than respond emotionally, would it not be better to navigate those moments from a place of neutrality and groundedness? In today’s episode, I talk about Grounded Communication and how to effectively navigate tough conversations with it when the need arises. For situations where you might have the wrong words or none, this could be an advance plan to turn such into opportunities for clarity, consistency, and even brand loyalty!
