recorded on the 11 DEC 2020

This is episode 65 of Squawk Ident, “Throw a Nickel on the Grass”, recorded on the 11th of December, 2020, from the Av8r Sound Studios from somewhere in Southern California. On today’s show I have the privilege in sitting down with my favorite podcast co-hosts from the podcast universe. Rob, Roger, and I wanted to spend this episode discussing recent events within our industry, vaccines and the FAA, our latest flying adventures (or lack there of), escape routes over mountainous terrain, and a little drama about luggage. 25 Jul 2020Flight 50 - Captain, Commander, & Team USA01:56:23

Recorded on the 23rd of July, 2020

On today's episode, I am so very excited to sit down with a phenomenal aviator whom I first met a few years ago, while flying a 2 day sequence together. I can remember that I was intrigued the moment he told me about the rigors of his Team USA triathlon training schedule. He was preparing for an event that he would be participating in just days after our flight sequence together.

He is an accomplished Legacy Airlines Captain, a retired Naval Commander and E-2 and ES3A pilot for the US Navy, and an award winning USA Triathlon Team Member. He is an SBR Sports Ambassador, an F2C Nutrition Ambassador, and a USA Triathlon Certified Coach. Today, I have the privilege in speaking with this amazing aviator about his fantastic journey, right here on the 50th episode of Squawk Ident. It is with the utmost privilege that I introduce to the show, Captain Kevin Elmore.

23 May 2020Flight 42 - Mask Shaming & Distance Learning02:10:35

Recorded on 21st of May, 2020

On todays show, we will be discussing load factors and the outlook for pilots looking ahead to October 1st. The president doesn’t seem concerned about the aviation industry, should we be? Also, with the reduction of flights throughout the country, the 5% increase in load factor, according to the TSA’s report last week, has started to become evident with aircraft that are starting to become "uncomfortably almost full." We will also explore in the WTF segment face mask shaming, seriously…yes, seriously. There has also been some flight deck mask push back, why is that, we will discuss. And finally we will explain Distance Learning. To help me navigate these topics, I am honored to be joined by a group of aviators that I have bribed generously to be on today’s show. Did you guys get your Squawk Ident stimulus checks yet? I promise they are in the mail…

On episode 39 of Squawk Ident, I am so very honored to be joined by a fantastic individual who has paved an incredible journey in aviation. From his start in the U.S. Navy, to excelling within the ranks at Legacy Airlines by maintaining positions in Reservations, Ramp Agent, Customer Service, Gate Agent, Flight Attendant, and Pilot to name a few. He has held positions as an Aeromedical HIMS Chairman, a Peer Mentor, a Flight Department Recruiter, and a Board Member for the Something MAAgic Foundation. Welcome aboard Flight 117 of the Squawk Ident Podcast - The Leadership Toolbox.

On today’s flight, I am honored to spend some time with a phenomenal aviator, leader, and mentor. He is a retired Major General for the California Air National Guard. That is where he was responsible for the mission readiness and operational effectiveness across a broad spectrum of programs and activities involving five wings and over 4900 military and civilian personnel serving at ten locations within California.

He began his civilian flying career at “Legacy Airlines” in the year 2000, where he currently commands the A320 fleet of aircraft. From his start as a flight engineer on the Boeing 727, to his type ratings on the 757/767, 787, and A320, today, he shares his journey in aviation with us. Joining me from the middle of a flight sequence where we just returned for Suriname, in South America. U.S. Air National Guard Major General (ret) and “Legacy” Airlines Captain Greg Jones joins us today.

We also hear some feedback from a freshly minted CFI, Nick St Croix.

So stay with us as we depart together on Flight 117 of the Squawk Ident Podcast.

09 Sep 2021Flight 89 - Remembering 9/1103:18:53

recorded on the 7th of September, 2021

On today’s special flight of the Squawk Ident podcast - Remembering September 11th - the Squawk Ident crew and I listen in along with all of you, to some of our favorite aviators as they recall what it was like 20 years ago as the world first discovered that four U.S. commercial airliners were being used as weapons against our nation by a new form of terrorism never before imagined. Nearly 3000 souls lost their lives on 9/11, four aircraft were destroyed, and our nation and the aviation industry were forever changed.

The inspiration for this special episode came from recent conversations that we each shared which pointed out that there is an entire generation of aviators out on the line today that are barley 20 year old themselves.

Join us as we speak with a few of our favorite professional airline pilots as they recall the events that changed their industry, their careers, and their lives forever on a beautiful September morning in 2001.

A special thank you to Captain Elmore, Captain Evans, Captain Barber, Captain Fielsch, Captain LeTourneau, & Captain Lindner for sharing their  experiences with us.

All this and more onboard Flight 89 of the Squawk Ident podcast.

recorded on the 20FEB2023

Welcome on board Flight 128 of the Squawk Ident Podcast - Peeling Away the Armor

On today’s flight Av8rTony has the opportunity to speak with an American Airline Captain whose journey in aviation began when she and her family moved to the U.S. from Hungry in the year 1975. She accomplished an education that thought her to speak a little more than a handful of languages.

After earning a degree from the Manhattan School of Music as a Flutist, she realized that her passion for aviation was calling her to change directions. From flight instructing, to the U.S. Air Force, the Air National Guard, flying for Airborne Express, and later American Airlines, her over three decades of experiences as a professional aviator has given her the insights she needs to tackle her next aspiration, to win the election for the LAX domicile vice-chair position for her pilot’s union.

Today, we sit down with Captain Juli Zabos as she shares her aviation journey with us.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of the podcast

22 Sep 2021Flight 90 - Air Shows and Slot Times01:18:02

recorded on the 21st of September, 2021

Welcome aboard Flight 90 of the Squawk Ident Podcast - Air Shows and Slot Times

On today’s flight Rob D. and I discuss how we wrapped up the Summer of 2021 with some fantastic adventures.

I highlight my first aviation event in years as I detail the Redlands Inaugural IAC Acrobatic Cup at KRAI - Redlands Municipal Airport in Southern California. That is where I met the owner of the first Cessna 172 to be sold off the production line in 1955.

We also are so very honored to have had the opportunity to help reconnect one of our listeners with one our or favorite guests of Squawk Ident. We will discuss that, and the 2021 Reno Air Races. They just wrapped up the STIHL National Championship Air Races on the 19th of September, and we are so excited to hear the event was a success.

And we are excited to hear some audio feedback from our very own Captain Roger as he highlights some moments from his flying adventure across the Atlantic.

All this and more onboard Flight 90 of the Squawk Ident podcast.

13 Mar 2020Flight 31 - Do Not Panic!01:38:43

Recorded on 12th of March, 2020

On this episode of Squawk Ident, I have a conversation with my co-host RobD. We discuss what has been spreading around the flight line faster than an infectious disease spreading on a crowded cruise ship, that’s right…we are talking about “job security.” No, not the mall cop kind, we are taking about the kind of job security we pilots worry about worse than this virus itself, we are talking about stagnation, furlough, line quality, canceled upgrades, and pilot hiring freezes.

Most importantly, there is one piece of advice I can give in my 3 decades of employment, and nearly two decades at the airlines, DON’T PANIC! This industry is very cyclical and is affected by many complex factors. RobD and I are going to dive into the latest information about how the current climate of the US airline market is moving towards.

07 Feb 2020Flight 23 - Sequence Details, Corona Panic, and Layover Safety01:46:18

Recorded on 06 February, 2020

On this episode of Squawk Ident I am joined by Rob D. Together we will discuss our trip details in a segment we call From the Flight Line. We also briefly tackle a topic that has been flooding the headlines with the Coronavirus epidemic in full scare! What are your risk factors if you fly domestically in the U.S. right now? Do those cheap masks that you buy at your local pharmacy actually protect you or is it all just overreaction driven by media frenzy?

And in a recent and tragic turn of events, we will discuss the importance of situational awareness and safe layover practices in the wake of some devastating news that a fellow aviator lost his life when caught in the cross fire while on a layover in San Juan, Puerto Rico. All this and more on this episode of Squawk Ident.

29 Feb 2020Flight 28 - From Building Airbuses to Flying Them01:14:37

Recorded on the 25th of February, 2020

On this episode of Squawk Ident, I have the honor in speaking with a captain that I shared a flight sequence with a few weeks ago. Listening to the tales he shared about his journey in aviation was an amazing experience.

All of us professional aviators have our unique stories to tell about how we progressed through the challenges that come with this profession, but his story stands out. From an apprenticeship at a company that later became British Aerospace to flying for Air Atlanta Icelandic. He has survived multiple furloughs and recalls, mergers and bankruptcies, and countless interviews in between. In addition to having the patience to answer my barrage of questions about his journey, he is also one of the most kindest and personable individuals that I have come across.

18 Mar 2020Flight 32 - Stronger Together, an Aviation Couple's Journey02:00:52

Recorded on 17th of March, 2020

On this episode of Squawk Ident, I am joined by an aviation couple that have shared their journey in aviation together. I first met Jeri in 2017, when she was just getting back into the airline world after 13 years away from the profession. She and her husband Ty have been able to navigate the many downturns and celebrate great accomplishments in their careers all while raising a family. From sound engineering to space camp to civil air patrol and more, they both have been an inspiration to me for many years. Today, I was able to interview them. Their journeys have been filled with love and sacrifice. At a time when what we need more of is positivity and celebration, I am honored to share our discussion with all of you.

On today’s flight Rob D. & Captain Roger join us. , We are excited to hear all about Roger's recent jet-setting adventure. We also discuss how President Biden has tapped a retired airline captain to lead the U.S. Mission to the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The Squawk Ident crew & I also have the honor in speaking with an aviator who’s journey is nothing shy of spectacular. He holds an MBA in Information Systems Management, a Masters in Military Arts and Sciences, and International Relations, to name just a few of his incredible list of academic achievements. Not too long ago, he was the Commander of the 62nd Operations Group, at joint bases Lewis & McCord, in Washington. That is where he ensured the combat readiness of approximately 700 active duty military and civilian personnel, in four squadrons, operating 48 - C-17A Globemaster III aircraft.

15 Jan 2023Flight 125 - Seniority is not Everything, It's the Only Thing02:32:40

recorded on 08JAN2023

Welcome on board Flight 125 of the Squawk Ident Podcast - Seniority is not Everything, It's the Only Thing

Today’s episode marks the first Squawk Ident flight of season 5.

Alex and I recently had the honor in sitting down with a truly remarkable aviator who’s journey in aviation started in the early 1970s. That is when our featured guest’s decorated military veteran father paid the steep cost of $600, for him to achieve his Private Pilot Certificate. With the passion for aviation growing within him, he went on to become an aircraft washer, a line fueler, a Gold Seal flight instructor, a trained dispatcher and 727 flight engineer, a corporate pilot, and an airline pilot as well. From flying Apaches, Turbo Commanders, and Twin Otters to commanding DC-10’s, Super-80’s, 75s/76s, and 737’s, his remarkable journey lead him to build upon an aviation career that has seen many challenges. In 2013, at the age of 65 years young, he retired from American Airlines.

I was honored to be invited into his home, where he and his son, (a 3rd generation pilot currently flying for “Sandpiper Regional”), sat down with me to share his story.  This is an interview from the 8th of January, 2023, with retired American Airlines Captain Greg Daigle and his son Alex.

17 Dec 2023Flight 141 - Say Again01:55:22

recorded on 15DEC2023

On today’s flight, as we approach the end of 2023, we celebrate Season 5’s final flight. Captain Roger, Alex D., Terry S., and Av8rTony discuss the required flexibility of Part 91 & 135 schedules vs. airline schedules, temporary duty assignments and commuting, 750hrs at Sandpiper, distractions of tech, and the inevitability of the age 67 ruling. So stay with us as we run our final checklists as we prepare to push off the gate. Flight 141 of the Squawk Ident Podcast is underway.

31 Mar 2023Flight 131 - The Reluctant Pilot02:26:21

recorded on 29MAR2023

Welcome on board Flight 131 of the Squawk Ident Podcast - The Reluctant Pilot

On today’s flight, I have the honor of being joined in the mobile studios by an aviator who’s journey began the Pacific Northwest when his older brother dared him to take a Demo Flight after a heated discussion that people with glasses can’t fly airplanes. From student pilot, airport lineman, gold seal flight instructor, to airline pilot, his experiences has lead him to piloting Bandeirantes, Jetstreams, Brasilias, Md-80’s, B737s, and currently the A320 family of aircraft.

He is a storyteller, a model aircraft collector, and a professional money waister with his performance car and motorcycle hobbies. Prone to collecting nearly anything, if left unsupervised. He shares his journey in aviation with us. Captain Dave Buchmiller joins me on the podcast today.

So buckle up, sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of the podcast.

20 Jul 2020Flight 49 - Vikings Take Flight01:33:40

Recorded on 17th of July, 2020

On episode 49 of Squawk Ident Captain Roger and I have the honor of speaking with a pair of aviators that both have an impressive international footprint in aviation. They both started their aviation careers in Iceland and eventually came to America to build flight time in Cessnas and Pipers at a little flight school named Tailwind Flight Centre, LLC, in Chandler, Arizona.  Their journeys have since allowed them to build upon impressive resumes of flying positions around the world. They have flown with operators based in Austria, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, and Iceland. They share their accomplishments in aviation and what the future holds for them in the wake of this global pandemic with us. Join Captain Roger and me as we speak with some true Icelandic Vikings Sigurbjörn (Sibbi) Ragnarsson & Rúnar Ingi Ásgeirsson on this fantastic episode of Squawk Ident.

23 Apr 2023Flight 132 - the Syndrome Effect03:02:54

Recorded on 19APR2023

Welcome on board Flight 132 of the Squawk Ident Podcast - the Syndrome Effect

On today’s flight I am grateful to be joined by some excellent co-hosts Captain Rob & Terry . Together, we will discuss our latest flight schedules, we have an audio update that Alex has sent in, and I will share an event that I was able to take part in that involved some very special Make-A-Wish families.

We also welcome a special guest that I have bribed handsomely to join us today. He is my favorite Acme Airlines captain and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. His airline career has spanned over three decades where he has flown the B727, L1011, MD88/90, and currently he commands the B717. He is an alumni of Georgia Tech, and Auburn University, and a graduate of the Accident Investigation and Flight Safety School at the University of Southern California/Norton Air Force Base. He is an avid vocalist and the host and creator of a wildly popular aviation podcast that will surely give you a syndrome. We welcome Captain Jeff Nielsen to the podcast today.

So buckle up, this is going to be epic! Sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of the podcast.

03 Mar 2020Flight 29 - Tupelo, Delta State, & an Acme Bus Driver01:34:44

Recorded on the 28th of February, 2020

On this episode of Squawk Ident, I have the opportunity to speak with young aviator who’s journey intersected with mine early on in the progression of advancements in our respective careers. His path directed him left, when mine went right. Here we are over a decade later, he flying for a U.S. Legacy career we refer to as ACME Airlines on this show, and I at a U.S. Legacy career that we call LEGACY Airlines on Squawk Ident.

We as aviators often find ourselves saying things “like you never know where you are going to end up in this profession, it is a little luck, a little bit of chance, and a whole lot of timing.” This statement can not be better represented than tales from the journey we will dive into on this episode of Squawk ident.

16 Jul 2020Flight 48 - Airport Bums & Bandeirantes01:56:13

Recorded on the 13th of July, 2020

On Episode 48 of Squawk Ident, I am joined in the mobile Av8r Studio on the 7th floor of the Georgetown - Marriott Hotel in Washington D.C. by an aviator that is sure to impress. His four plus decade journey in aviation started out with a ride on a cross country flight at the age of 10, where he joined his father on one of his flight lessons. From airport bum, to mechanic's helper, and later A&P and Airline Line Pilot, his journey is filled with stories that focus on friendships, loyalty, and opportunity.  His leadership and experience has been a true inspiration to learn from.  Having the opportunity to fly with Captain Dave is an experience that I am very grateful for. His journey in aviation is sure to inspire.

Recorded on the 2nd of November, 2020

On today’s special episode of the Squawk Ident podcast, we are very grateful to have the opportunity to speak with an aviator who has navigated some rather challenging obstacles along his fantastic journey in aviation. His exceptional story tackles a topic that is often too uncomfortable for many pilots to even discuss. He shares with us how his disease nearly put an end to his aviation career and how his recovery, thanks to the HIMS program, saved his life. Hopefully, someone out there listening will hear about his journey and decide that it is time to take that first step and ask for help. Joining us from his home in Eagleville, Tennessee, is Mr. David W.

Recorded on the 20th of January, 2020.

On this episode of Squawk Ident I had the opportunity to have a casual conversation with a guest that I introduced on the show in episode 19, Mr. Rob DeJesus. We had more we wanted to talk about, so we decided to make time to discuss how our flight schedules often get torn apart due to all kinds of things from weather events to training displacements. We also explore the difference between performing manual revisions vs. pressing the sync button on the EFB. We even share a story about the actions of a "class act" captain and the power of the parking break. All this and more on this episode of Squawk Ident.

On today’s flight Av8rTony, Rob D., and Alex D. discuss their 2022 Holiday flight experiences. We explore turbulence, the recent uptake in injuries caused by airliners encountering turbulence, and we ask the question, is there a wrong way to wearing a seatbelt?

We also discuss how winter storm Elliott may have caused ramp agents to walk off the job, abandoned dogs at airports, Spirit Airlines’ new partnership with L3Harris, and we wrap up season 4 of the Squawk Ident podcast with some of our favorite moments.

So stick with us, as we cover all this and more on this, the 124th episode of the Squawk Ident podcast.
