21 Sep 2021Missouri Woods & Water - Elk Trip Recap & Stories02:03:52
This week on the Missouri Woods & Water podcast, the guys have on guest hosts Pat Slivkov and Russell Ryun to talk about our recent trips out west to chase elk.  Russell gets into his inaugural trip to New Mexico and all of the experiences they had out there.  New Mexico presented many challenges that made it difficult for them to get on elk before their trip came to an end.  Next, the rest of us who went to Colorado together talk about all of the stuff that happened on the trip.  Colorado was full of action and each day brought new opportunities and aggravation.  One thing is for sure, our trip out west this year did not disappoint from an action standpoint.  While none of us ended up punching a tag, we still consider the trip a success because of the comradery and memories made.  This one goes long so sit back and have some fun with us!       Missouri Woods & Water is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. 19 Oct 2021Land & Legacy - What Else Can You Learn from the B&C Distribution Map00:45:57
Big deer only grow where crops are grown! Wrong! That's been the commonly accepted answer after a quick evaluation of the Boone and Crocket entries map. That is a very surface-level takeaway from that map.  When you study that map and begin to think, I don't live in crop country, you may say to yourself, can I really expect to shoot big deer? The answer is yes, and the route to achieve that is not to bring the crops to your less productive soils. The answer is to not conform to the overall landscape management practices that your area is conducting. If you live in pasture country, don't manage pastures in the commonly accepted way. If you live in timber country, manage your timber differently. The B&C map shows us that the areas with fewer entries is not the way to grow big deer, it suggests different management approaches must be taken in those areas.  Don't settle for less when you can change your management style to meet the needs of deer to reach optimization for your hunting property.    Land & Legacy is powered by Simple Cast. 05 Mar 2020DIY Sportsman - Saddlepalooza Recap 202000:35:16
Saddlepalooza 2020 is in the books. The trip was almost cancelled last minute due to flooding, but some last minute heroics from some of the group members allowed for a location change and the trip to go on. The annual get-together/hog hunt took place at Ft. Stewart in Georgia. This is a massive military base that is open to public hunting but only under strict rules. Some areas are open to archery only, while others are open for all weapons. Various zones can open or close for access on any given day. I went out into an archery only unit with a few other guys on the first hunting day. With a little bit of luck, I was able to shoot my first hog at about 10 yards. The second day, I hunted with Catman in a rifle zone, using a rifle. I talk about that hunt as well on the podcast. Of course, part of the event that's exciting for most is the saddle demo day, where people can get together and try out different saddles, climbing methods, platforms, and accessories to experiment, learn, and discuss. I talk about some of the popular or newer items or methods from the demo day as well.    DIY Sportsman is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

15 Apr 2024Oklahoma Outdoors - Oklahomas License Modernization Act00:54:25
We have a very important episode this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. At the end of march, the governor of Oklahoma signed the "License Modernization Act." This legislation drastically changes the current license structure for the state and is set to go into effect this summer. This act combines current licenses, simplifies many, and raises some costs. One change that is sure to strike up some hot conversations is how the non resident deer license has almost doubled! John walks through the act and talks about the good and the bad of what is about to take place.  This episode isn't all legislative talk however. John also talks about his recent hog hunt with the boys from up north. Two Michiganders and one Ohio native make the trek to Oklahoma to help John and his family with their hog problem, and do a pretty dang good job of it! Learn more about your ad choices. 29 Sep 2023N.F.C. - Early Season Bowhunting Strategy & Success01:16:11
On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan chats with Josh Honeycutt to talk about his recent early season bowhunting success. Josh, an experienced hunter and outdoor writer who continues to find success every season, breaks down the strategy he used to locate and understand this bucks pattern. Thermals, wind directions, and how the terrain effected those variables, plays a huge role in how Josh got within shooting range of this big Kentucky buck. 27 May 2024Hound Dog Network - Gone To The Dogs | Steve and Corey Talk Stud Dogs01:26:22
The bees are humming and the hoot owls are wondering who’s doing the cookin’ in this episode from the front porch as Cary returns to the Gone To The Dog Podcast after welcoming a new daughter into the Gruber household. While he was gone, Corey joined the fund-raising ranks with his involvement in a charity called Wags for Kids. His plan involves raising money for deserving kids needing therapy dogs and such and it produced the idea of a coonhound stud dog auction.  Thirty owners agreed to provide stud service on social media to the highest bidder with all proceeds going to the benefit. The plan is working great and the boys talk about that in this episode which naturally leads into a much broader discussion of the ins and outs of running a stud dog in today’s tree dog market.  The discussion runs the gamut of pros and cons and provides a lot of insight and information for anyone thinking of putting a nice hound up for public stud. Pull up and rocker, sharpen up your Ticonderoga #2 and let’s talk stud dogs with Corey and Steve.  Learn more about your ad choices. 01 Dec 2019Huntavore - November Woes01:02:56
Nick and Dustin are finally able to sit down and chat again. November has been tough on them and their deer hunting. Dustin has been moving and Nick’s family has been plaugued with a month long sickness. However, the guys are hopeful for the second half of the deer season and even getting gitty for small game soon. October was good to the Huntavore crew. Nick and Dustin were on the board with does. Nick was able to salvage a real nice 9 point buck from a friends backyard. November ended up being very busy in their personal lives, so shotgun season sits were pretty few. Nick elaborates on the CWD testing on his doe and how it was a pretty simple process. Also a heart recipe is in the works for Dan Johnson’s buck heart. Nicks got a few ideas rolling around but need to get a plan written down.   Huntavore is Powered by Simplecast  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

11 Jul 2024Hunting Gear Podcast - New REVEAL Trail Cameras01:01:28
In this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, host Dan Johnson interviews Gregg Farrell from Tactacam about their new camera, Reveal. They discuss the company's history, the current rain situation in Wisconsin, and their personal hunting plans for the year. They then dive into the details of Tactacam's transition from action cameras to trail cameras, focusing on the reliability and ease of use of their products. They also talk about the evolution of trail cameras and the importance of not over-engineering them. Finally, they discuss the specific features and differences between the Reveal X 2.0 and Reveal X 3.0 models. The Tactacam 3.0 cameras have been redesigned from the ground up, with improvements in form factor and antenna design. The new antennas are mounted on the top of the camera and have a two-position pivot, allowing for better transport and positioning. The external antennas are necessary because the areas where the cameras are hung typically have poor cell service, and the antennas maximize signal strength. The new cameras also feature high-quality 4K photos and 1080p videos, improved image sensors for fewer false triggers, and an internal storage option that eliminates the need for SD cards. The cameras are more efficient with batteries and are priced the same as the previous models. Future updates include new accessories and an app update that will simplify the user experience. Takeaways: Tactacam started as a company producing point of view cameras before transitioning to trail cameras with their Reveal line. The company focuses on building reliable trail cameras and providing excellent customer service. The Reveal cameras are designed to be easy to use, with a simple setup process and an intuitive app interface. Tactacam aims to strike a balance between incorporating new technology trends and maintaining ease of use for customers. The Reveal X 2.0 and Reveal X 3.0 models offer different features and capabilities, providing options for different user preferences. It can lead to deer-less sits and frustrating hunting for the hunter who wants to use the same old access routes to hunt the same old stands. But for those who are willing to get creative and put in the work, hunting pressure from yourself and others can actually help your hunting, if you can understand and capitalize on how deer patterns change when the pressure heats up. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Dan Johnson about adjusting to hunting pressure. Sometimes the adjustments one needs to make are major. Sometimes they’re more subtle. But one thing is sure, if you hunt the entire season with the same strategy and in the same locations you hunted on opening day, the odds of you having regular encounters with deer are very slim. Tune in to learn how Dan makes adjustments to stay on deer despite, and sometimes because of, hunting pressure. 24 Jun 2024Oklahoma Outdoors - Duck Hunting with Brian Halbleid00:56:07
This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast John is joined by Brian Halbleid of the Migration Waterfowl Podcast. A Pennsylvania native, Brian grew up deer hunting like most young boys and girls in the Keystone state. It wasn't until a little later in life that he was introduced to duck hunting and he hasn't looked back since. John and Brian talk about some of the differences in hunting northern vs southern ducks, and how the timing of when things get good may differ. They touch on a little bit of everything, including decoy spread layout, when to use or not use spinning wing decoys, and the advancement of motion decoys over the years.  Towards the end of the episode, John couldn't help but talk about deer a little bit. Brian discusses how the human population has changed hunting in his area in recent years, but that it's not all bad change. He also talks about what a difference antler point restrictions have made on the trophy quality in the state, and how education has led to more hunters passing younger bucks. 18 May 2022N.F.C. - Breaking Down A Public Land Buck Bed01:03:37
On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan breaks down a hunting scenario with a listener who found single buck bed while scouting public land. The guys get in to an in-depth strategy discussion about how todays guest plans on hunting this bed. They talk about everything from what wind direction this buck feels most comfortable in, the terrain surrounding this bed, and how we think running water may impact the thermals in this area.  In this strategy session they also break down the food sources, where to set up an ambush point in his bed to feed pattern, and how to access that ambush point. They also iron out the details about the best time of year to put this plan in to motion and if he feels he will have a higher success rate on a morning or evening hunt. 05 Nov 2019Land & Legacy - Shrubs, Rutting Whitetails, and Adequate Cover01:12:24
This week is devoted to all things cover. Cover for wildlife can come in many different shapes and sizes. This is why we promote various cover types and within those cover types according to the region you should have a whole suite of beneficial species. Tune into this podcast to hear what cover looks like in each region of the country for whitetails. Every region has different factors that determine what type or composition of cover should be present. The various forms are dictated by the climate, rainfall, and length of the growing season.  Why does this matter? At this point in the season in much of the country, whitetails are seeking out the cover to find does. As land managers and landowners we need to be able to promote the right cover on each property. Each element of cover we discuss should be present to play a key role in the development of the deer herd and attractiveness of the property.  To best understand what type of security cover, escape cover, bedding cover, and fawning cover should be present write down the different types of cover composition for each region. Try to replicate this on your land. If treated like a sanctuary, this cover will produce deer almost every rut!   Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. Regularly tuning bows and getting new strings are important for accuracy and performance. Shooting heavy arrows can provide better penetration and lethality. Having separate bows for hunting and competition allows for specialized setups. Arrow weight and tuning are crucial for accuracy and penetration. Cam timing and paper tuning are important steps in setting up a new bow. Micro-tune adjustments on bows like Elite and Bowtech make fine-tuning easier. Choosing the right broadheads can make a significant difference in hunting success. Releases play a role in shot execution and can be adjusted for comfort and control. 15 Jan 2019Land & Legacy | Pollinator Blends: The Real Story01:13:13
On this podcast we are on site of a pasture renovation project with Pure Air Natives. We are assisting and filming the process of converting an old fescue pasture into a pollinator blend utilizing the EQIP Program. When we think pollinator blends, we often think just about Monarchs, but there is so much more! During this podcast, we cover when pollinator blends service more than just pollinators, how they benefit other wildlife, limit erosion, improve soil quality, impress the Ms. at home, the economics, and the steps to ensure efficient plant native seeds. We break down all these topics and prove it is a no brainer for any hunter, land manager, and outdoor enthusiast to consider planting a pollinator blend on their own property. For many years to come, these six acres will offer exponentially more cover, forage, and diversity to this landowners property in comparison to the existing pasture. If you want to win points at home and improve the land, plant a pollinator mix. The benefits are endless! Enjoy.Learn.Share #PlantyourLegacy #ForLoveoftheLand Learn more about your ad choices. 23 Feb 2021Land & Legacy - Prescribed Fire Series Fire Ignition Techniques01:09:00
On the final podcast of the prescribed fire podcast series, Frank and Kyle host as they share their extensive knowledge regarding the usage of prescribed fire. Frank and Kyle go in-depth about the different ways that you can ignite a fire. The way fire moves across a landscape from residual heat, flame height, the direction of the wind all help to determine the plant response.  There are several key ways to ignite a fire. In this podcast we cover the following in-depth: Backing Fire, heading fire, ringing fire, stripping fire, and flanking fire. These different firing techniques will be used based on the changes in the terrain as well as the desired effect of the fire. A backing fire cannot produce what a head fire can, just the same as a flanking fire is different from a stripping fire.  If you ever wonder how you should be using prescribed fire to alter the plant communities growing on your property, this is the podcast for you. 29 Mar 2021Huntavore - Wild Game Recipes with Jeff Benda01:33:23
Jeff Benda loves food.  Growing up as a kid on an AirForce Base,  he and his parents enjoyed their time at home in the kitchen.  Whether it was making their own, or hearing about a great new restaurant to try, food was a common event.  Jeff however couldn't realize his second dream of being an outdoors man until becoming an adult.  As a kid, he watched fishing and sport shows Sunday morning before church, read familiar books like My Side of the Mountain.  It wasn't till his friends invited him on a duck hunt back in 2002.  Since then, Jeff has monopolized on his location in North Dakota being able to chase a whole host of animals from the Midwest and Western states. Recipe creation is a task I find to be challenging.  Might be that I’m putting too much thought into relaying to the reader why certain steps are important, or that I am a natural presenter and hack my way through writing.  Jeff offered some insight that a recipe is more of a creative expression and be played and messed with.  Don't like spice, omit it.  Want the fire?  Add more.  Whatever you change though, make sure to make a note of it.  Jeff keeps a journal handy as he's in the kitchen.  Another thing that Jeff does is actually read cookbooks.  Old ones, new ones, wildgame or completely domestic.  He draws inspiration from this reading and keeps his creative jive alive. Jeff recently published a mind blowing recipe of Jackalope Wellington.  While I wish it was from an actual buck Jack, Jeff brough the backstrap of a cottontail and antelope together in a rich crowd pleaser.  Here is the link to check out: https://www.backcountryhunters.org/jackalope_wellington Huntavore Partner: Tappecue Meat Probes Instagram: @tappecue Website: https://bit.ly/2NIr0Xj Coupon Code 10% off: HUNT10   Huntavore is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. 20 Sep 2023Pennsylvania Woodsman - Quality Taxidermy w/ Triple Trophy Taxidermy01:18:52
On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we sit down with Brian Good from Triple Trophy Taxidermy. Brian has pursued this art of taxidermy from a young age and has never ceased learning and honing his craft making trophies come alive (almost). Brian is an avid hunter, and we of course discuss his interest in turkey hunting, hunting with his children, and everyone's favorite, whitetail deer. WIth each of these hunts, there comes a different level of care and preparation if you plan to have them mounted, which Brian breaks down easily for everyone. Triple Trophy stands for the three big game species here in Pennsylvania - turkey, bear and deer. With each species opening this fall, skinning and handling each properly are vital. Are there additional tools to keep in your kill kit for preparation? How should you handle skinning and field dressing? Should you take measurements for a taxidermist? We cover this and more! Brian provides insight to how he handles certain aspects of his work, which highlights the quality of the product he delivers. This is a major reason why people will travel to take their trophy to him. If you're looking for a quality taxidermist, check out Brian near Ringtown, Pennsylvania!  https://www.tripletrophytaxidermy.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. 10 Sep 2020Transition Wild - Q&A Elk Hunting Scenarios with Ben Guttormson01:59:37
Today I’m joined by my friend Ben Guttormson for another badass elk hunting podcast. What’s cool about this episode is that it’s positioned as a question and answer format of various hunting situational and preparation scenarios, where Ben explains what he would do and the reasons why. During our discussion of preparation, I have him rank five categories of scouting, fitness, shooting, gear, and calling and how he prioritizes them in order of most important to least important. I also have him break down what a week long hunt would look like day by day if he were dropped into a unit blind without any prior knowledge of the area. We round out the episode with “in the field” type scenarios where he breaks down certain scenarios of calling and how he would set up to get within bow range of elk, given a number of circumstances. We also cover strategies for locating elk in various weather and early season conditions when the rut is not in full swing yet. If you are hunting elk tin the west this fall, this episode is loaded with all sorts of valuable knowledge and information that will help you become more successful on the mountain.    Transition Wild is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. 14 Oct 2022Pennsylvania Woodsman - Archery Hunting PA Bears and Bucks w/ Todd Bromley01:04:40
Pennsylvania is one of the few states that does not allow baiting or the use of hounds for hunting black bears. With the extreme diversity in habitat across this state, harvesting one with a bow can be a difficult task. However, with the season expansion and increase in bear population, archers taking the field in pursuit of these bruins have slightly better odds then they may have historically. Regardless, scouting and developing a hunting strategy is still not a walk in the park! This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we chat with Todd Bromley. Todd is the editor of Crossbow Magazine and lifelong Pennsylvania hunter. For the past 11 seasons, Todd has transitioned from compound to using solely his crossbow each fall. We begin by diving into a bowhunting philosophy and ethics conversation, regardless of the weapon being vertical or horizontal. Next we chat about Todd's recent fascination - black bears. In 2015, Todd killed the 15th largest bear in the state at the time, and has since found himself scouting and hunting hard each fall. He shares some tips for finding food in the types of habitat he typically hunts, and also finding sign in some out of the ordinary ways. We also discuss a little bit of whitetail deer hunting strategy, specifically how he uses trail cameras to be successful. We close by discussing some of the testing he has done with heavy crossbow bolts weighing in over 600 grains with 200 grain fixed blade broadheads. Bear season begins October 15th, and this episode should fire you up! 21 Oct 2022Pennsylvania Woodsman - Make the Most of Your Big Woods Hunt w/ Johnny Stewart01:57:04
There are tons of fantastic deer hunters across the entire country. Each and every one of them has a unique set of tactics they bring to the table. Usually they are developed specific to the regions they hunt most. Deer density, hunting pressure, food sources and more all affect the strategy of targeting mature whitetails. While there are many great hunters who can relate these components well in agricultural settings, finding people that consistently find success in big woods public land can be difficult. The few that do are definitely grinders! On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch has a conversation with none other than Johnny Stewart. Johnny is from western PA and has hunted whitetails across the country, but still finds himself fascinated with northeastern big woods. Many of you have probably listened to Johnny on other shows and know his intricate level of detail when scouting and hunting mature deer. This episode is not much different, but we break down the hunting season from archery through late season flintlock and how Johnny works through some of the basics. Enjoy! 21 Aug 2024Antler Up - Stay Ahead of the Game: Decoding Whitetail Patterns01:22:07
In this episode of the Antler Up Podcast, Jeremy sits down with Brandon Barlow to dive deep into the nuances of whitetail hunting, with a particular focus on preparation and setting realistic expectations. Brandon, an experienced hunter from the South, shares his unique strategies for navigating the early season and unpredictable rut. He emphasizes the importance of honing in on daytime deer and leveraging historical data to determine the best times and locations to hunt. The discussion also touches on the significance of understanding fawning data, which can play a crucial role in identifying optimal hunting periods. Brandon's insights offer a fresh perspective on how to adapt hunting tactics based on regional variations and whitetail behavior. Brandon's approach to whitetail hunting is both practical and unconventional. He advocates for setting up cameras in primary bedding areas to track daytime deer activity and suggests using affordable SD cameras instead of relying on cell cameras. By focusing on historical patterns and keeping options open, hunters can enhance their chances of encountering mature bucks. 03 Feb 2023Pennsylvania Woodsman - Shed Season is Among Us01:06:07
Deer season is officially over for the 2022-23 season in Pennsylvania. The general narrative from this point on is cabin fever until spring turkey season. For every diehard deer hunter though, there is always something to be doing to prepare for next fall. Whether you're cutting timber and travel corridors on private land or scouting new ground on public land, the hunt never quite ends. This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Dwayne Jones from Shed Season. Dwayne is just as crazy about scouring the landscape for fallen antlers as he is sitting in a deer stand - maybe more! We discuss Dwayne's recent property purchase and how he has begun to transform the land into a whitetail mecca. Dwayne shares the habitat projects in place including timber management, prescribed fire, invasive species removal, and of course, food plots. From here we dive into the beloved topic of pursuing mature bucks not only during the hunting season, but also during the months of February and March when antlers are falling. The attraction created on Dwayne's property is not only good for hunting, it's good for sheds!.  We cover strategies to find more antlers, putting the pieces of the puzzle together on mature bucks using shed antlers, and the added joy during the offseason for him and his family! 07 Apr 2023Limbhanger - Gobblers & Banditos - Outfitter Stories From Borderland01:01:43
This week on Limbhanger, we're talking about when and where might be your best bet when it comes to booking an outfitted turkey hunt. This is important especially when it comes to chasing the 49 state Super Slam. While the majority of our conversations are focused on public land hunting, there are absolutely some scenarios and states where you may want to consider an outfitter, and some that it would be necessary.  Adam gets the opportunity to do some of these hunts through his job and recently came back from a trip to South Texas hunting Rio gobblers. Joey booked an outfitted hunt with Jay Scott for his Goulds hunt in Mexico. As the guys talk through their experiences, they break down some of the good and bad when it comes to this style of hunting.  Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content! 24 Oct 2022Oklahoma Outdoors - Oklahoma Archery Antelope Hunting00:51:24
This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast John finally gets to talk about a topic he has been trying to cover since he started the show, Oklahoma Antelope hunting! Antelope are one of the hidden species in Oklahoma that many don't realize are here, much less that there is a hunting season for them. Josh Barnthouse started applying for one of the coveted controlled hunt rifle tags several years ago, and it was then that he learned Oklahoma offered an over the counter archery option. He and a buddy set out with a goal of harvesting a speed goat with a bow, which is no easy task in any state or circumstance.  Josh walks us through his three years of chasing antelope in the pancake flat Oklahoma panhandle. He started on one of the few public areas that offered hunting opportunities, but after putting in some time and miles, was eventually able to gain some private land permission. Josh talks about the different strategies he and his buddy and most recently his wife have implemented over the last few years. They have done it all, from sitting over water holes to spot and stalk, and even decoys. Josh talks about what he has learned, what worked and what didn't, and how anyone could take advantage of this unique opportunity.
