05 Oct 2023 | S2 #24 / Dr Christina Oakley-Harrington, Dreams of Witches | 00:54:03
Dr Christina Oakley-Harrington is Treadwell’s founder and presiding spirit. She was voraciously interested in spirituality and magic since childhood, and grew up in West Africa, Burma, and Chile, only moving to the West at the age of fifteen. In her early twenties, she was heartened to discover Europe’s own native religious traditions and has been a pagan ever since. A former academic, she left university life in 2001 to establish Treadwell’s. These days she serves as a consultant for programs and projects but is usually at the shop. She is the author of two books and numerous articles and was co-founder and literary editor of Abraxas: International Journal for Esoteric Studies.Today we discuss her new book from Black Letter Press - Dreams of Witches. Free, pagan, transgressive: worshippers of Pan, devotees of Diana. The men and women who meet under a full moon in the wild woods danced, sing, made music, and made love; in the home they make potions and mutter spells, be it to curse or cure. The witch image infused the European imagination down the centuries, appearing in court records, prose, and poetry. The impulse the literature described finally became a practiced mystery religion in the twentieth century, in the form of Wicca as it coalesced in the New Forest in the 1930s and 30s. The poems and passages in this book illustrate the supportive imagination of the New Forest Coven and its most famous initiate, Gerald Gardner. They date from the late medieval period through the Edwardian age, and all were instrumental, influential - inspiring early pagans, and hopefully, too, readers today.

13 Jul 2021 | The 'Man in Black' in Irish folklore | 00:48:38
To give you an idea of what the podcast Patreon is like I've compiled this show from some of last years bonus content from the community. Yes, I'm on the hard sell... "These stories feature the common themes of the 'Dark horseman' trickster that leads the protagonist awry and is quite unnecessarily cruel and spiteful on travellers he meets along the road. ... things take a darker turn and the human visitor gets an unpleasant supernatural brush with death. The stories propose that the reason for this unnecessary cruelty is a grudge the fairy folk has against humanity, much like the Djinn. I then briefly discuss the startlingly similar origin myths of the Fairies and Djinn." All these pieces have been gathered from the rural communities of Ireland via numerous folklorists and cataloged meticulously. I'm in their debt, it was a privilege to read through these handwritten stories and testimonies. Anyway, hurry along the road this dark night, lest you cross paths with the 'Man in black'.
17 Apr 2025 | S2 #68 / Daniel Yates, To Glimpse a Hollow Hill | 00:55:53
In this episode I’m joined by Daniel Yates— artist, writer, photographer, witch, and the mind behind the excellent Occult Library project.Daniel’s soon-to-be-released book To Glimpse a Hollow Hill is a deep and beautifully crafted exploration of Robert Kirk’s The Secret Commonwealth, a 17th-century manuscript at the heart of Scottish fairy belief and second sight traditions. We talk about the enormous task of transcribing and modernising Kirk’s original text, the folklore around seers, fairies, and fetch spirits, and the complex cultural landscape Kirk was writing from — one caught between Christianity, folk practice, and older ways of seeing the world. One of the most fascinating elements of the conversation is Kirk’s description of the Sith — not as the tiny winged fairies of Victorian fantasy, but as a people with their own culture, hierarchy, and even religious practices. These are beings who live alongside humans but by their own strange rules and logic — sometimes helpful, sometimes dangerous, always other.Daniel goes into more detail about Robert Kirk himself — not just as a minister and folklorist, but potentially as a seer working within a Christian framework. We discuss the ways in which Kirk subtly inserts himself into the text, the folklore surrounding his mysterious death on Doon Hill, and his possible motivations for writing The Secret Commonwealth — not merely as an academic exercise, but perhaps as a defence of the second sight and those who possessed it.In the Plus show, we go deeper into the more esoteric layers of Kirk’s Secret Commonwealth and the nature of the Sith.We explore the idea of dual-spirit traditions — the concept of co-walkers or fetch spirits that accompany a person or indeed a spirit, harvesting or feeding in some mysterious symbiotic way. Daniel draws intriguing parallels between this belief and spirit traditions found in cultures beyond Scotland. We discuss Kirk’s accounts of fairy lovers and the complicated, sometimes perilous relationships between humans and the Sith — not framed in terms of simple good or evil, but as entanglements with otherworldly beings operating by their own strange morality. There’s a beautiful reflection here on the porous boundary between worlds, and the price of crossing it — where gifts from the Otherworld might come with subtle costs, and where seership itself might not be a blessing freely given. We also talk about Daniel’s work on the Occult Library project — an ambitious and beautifully curated online resource cataloguing the wild and often ephemeral world of occult publishing.Daniel explains how the project came about as a response to the fragmentation of esoteric literature — especially from smaller or long-defunct presses — and his desire to create a browsable, searchable space where people could discover books that might otherwise disappear into obscurity. We discuss the challenges of gathering data on out-of-print and rare texts, the use of volunteers to help expand the library, and Daniel’s thoughtful approach to curation. He also shares future plans for the project, including an interactive map of occult locations, possible community features, and ways to sustain the site as it grows — all while preserving that sense of wonder and discovery that comes from stumbling across something rare, strange, or long-forgotten.Show notes:Buy 'To glimpse a hollow hill' https://www.atramentouspress.com/new-products/to-glimpse-a-hollow-hillDaniel's website https://www.photophrenic.comOccult Library https://www.occultlibrary.orgKeep in touch?https://linktr.ee/darraghmasonMusic by Obliqka https://soundcloud.com/obliqka

13 Jul 2020 | #24 / Joshua Cutchin & Timothy Renner on 'Where the Footprints End: High Strangeness and the Bigfoot Phenomenon'. | 01:11:30
This week we are joined by Joshua Cutchin and Timothy Renner to discuss the book they co-authored, ‘Where the Footprints End’, an exploration into the high strangeness surrounding the bigfoot phenomena. Joshua is an author and musician, and a well known figure in paranormal circles having appeared on some of the best known paranormal podcasts out there. Timothy is also a musician and author and on top of that he's a brilliant illustrator and host of the superb Strange familiars podcast. So, what’s the premise of the book? Despite their apparently physical nature, bigfoot and its hairy hominid kin consistently appear mired in High Strangeness—the peculiar, ineffable, and nonsensical absurdities so often encountered in paranormal phenomena. Some sightings seem more consistent with mythology than biology. Bigfoot often present supernatural attributes, like luminescent eyes or the ability to pass, ghostlike, through structures. Anomalous lights are regularly seen in areas of frequent sasquatch activity. Footprints persistently, if rarely, display odd numbered toes, and—most bafflingly—bigfoot trackways suddenly terminate in the middle of open, untouched terrain. In Volume 1 of Where the Footprints End: High Strangeness and the Bigfoot Phenomenon, authors Joshua Cutchin and Timothy Renner carefully examine not only the intersection of hairy apemen with global folklore—of poltergeists, faeries, extraterrestrials, magic, witches, ghosts, and archetypal women-in-white—but also question the fundamental assumptions underlying contemporary cryptozoological beliefs surrounding bigfoot. The Art of Cyprian, found in MS Sloane 3850, contains instructions for the construction and use of a magic mirror attributed to Saint Cyprian of Antioch. Along with the preparation of the mirror itself – which includes making and consecrating a particular ink for drafting certain figures of Solomon – come instructions detailing a conjuration of the ‘four worthy princes of the earth’, including a special appeal to the King of the East as their primus inter pares, and a dismissal of these same ‘four kings of the four parts of the world’. In this Guide to the Underworld, Alexander Cummins illuminates further Cyprianic dimensions of these directional courts of the various cardinal kings and their messenger-king attendants in the grimoiric corpus. We also discuss his journey into magic which including the collaborative storytelling of Dungeons and Dragons and the influence of Aikido and childhood paranormal experiences at national trust properties and the spectrum of ancestor work and working with the dead. 17 Feb 2023 | S2 #07 / Peter Mark Adams on Hagia Sophia / Sanctum of Kronos | 01:03:40
Today we welcome back the one and only Peter Mark Adams! In his new book Hagia Sophia / Sanctum of Kronos, he presents a remarkable study of the esoteric beliefs and spiritual traditions contained within the architectural and decorative features of Istanbul’s iconic Hagia Sophia. As with Adams’s previous books, this is a meticulously researched, captivating and illuminating piece of work. Punctuated with carefully selected, evocative photography and illustrations, it deconstructs the Hagia Sophia to reveal its esoteric heart. Culturally, the structure acts as a repository for the metaphysical preoccupations of a Hellenistic culture that evolved from the great mystery cults of antiquity to become the metaphysical engine of subsequent European thought. In the Plus show we discussed why Saturn is a focal point of Peter’s research and how the other plays a part in his creative process. We get into his next project in this Saturnian current and the relationship with providence and fate. We wrap up the show on the subject of energy work and healing and how this is foundational to Peter’s work and indeed his life Keep in touch? Music by Obliqka

Salicrow is a natural psychic medium who weaves the traditions of her Irish Traveler and Blackfoot heritage with modern magical techniques. For more than 30 years she has worked as a spirit channel, seer, and intuitive healer, offering readings and teaching workshops throughout the United States and internationally. She is the author of several books and today we are discussing her latest book, Spirit Speaker: A medium’s guide to Death and Dying/ In this compassionate and straightforward guide to the spiritual process of dying and what happens after death, psychic medium Salicrow answers the most common questions asked by her clients over her decades of work as a spirit speaker. Seeking to normalize the spiritual aspects of end-of-life care, she explains how active dying exists outside of normal reality, in a state in which the dying person and their caregivers often experience a heightened state of consciousness. Describing how the spirit is separate from the body and continues to exist after death, she shares thought-provoking stories of spirit contact and synchronicities that occurred for those actively involved in the dying process. She reveals how these encounters are common and act as guideposts along the journey into death, helping to ease the transition. She offers simple techniques for helping loved ones who are stuck or struggling to cross over and shares practices designed to help honour our beloved dead and develop living relationships with our ancestral spirits. Presenting an outline of what may be experienced during the dying process and beyond, Salicrow explores the time when a soul is actively dying or recently departed. She explains the multiple ways spirits reach out to communicate with us and provides a deep understanding of the signs, symbols, and sensations that spirits use to contact us as well as ways to strengthen that connection. She also explores challenging situations such as suicide, murder, and healing unresolved issues with the dead. Crafted through years of spirit communication sessions, this guide details how the spirit world works while revealing the beauty, healing, and love that exist in death. In the Plus show we get into the subject of body locks which keep people stuck in their bodies when dying. Salicrow also takes us through the moving account of being with her close friend during their assisted suicide. We go through the importance of a practical approach to the spirit world and the state of mind that is most conducive to spirit communication. Salicrow takes us through the many ways in which the beloved dead communicate with us and visit us from time to time. We wrap up discussing how there has been a spike in people having psychic experiences and how Spirit Speaker came out of that as a way to address this and help people navigate these experiences.

23 Jan 2024 | S2 #32 / Lisette Coly on Eileen J. Garrett & Lucifer | 01:02:49
Beginning in her early childhood, the world-famous trance medium and grande dame of parapsychology Eileen J. Garrett had numerous encounters with an entity she called the "Noble Stranger." When she asked his identity one day, this mysterious figure responded, "You may call me Lucifer." Call me Lucifer: Dialogues with a Noble Stranger, features Garrett's writings about her encounters with this Noble Stranger, and reflections on her intellectual "duels with her Devil." The book includes extensive verbatim transcripts of Lucifer's communication with Garrett, together with Lucifer's Compendium of Guidance. Though prepared with great care over the course of her life, the book has lain dormant in Garrett's family archives for decades. Her granddaughter, Lisette Coly, current President of the Parapsychology Foundation, has now decided that it should be shared with the public as an aid to our spiritual evolution. Eileen J. Garrett (1893-1970) was an Irish medium and one of the most important figures in parapsychology. Despite her apparent psychic abilities, which were subjected to numerous tests by the most prominent researchers of the era. Garrett maintained a lifelong healthy skepticism, always questioning the nature and meaning of her own extraordinary experiences. Her dedication to the objective, scientific study of psychical phenomena resulted in her establishing the Parapsychology Foundation, which published many books on the subject as well as the International Journal of Parapsychology, and the popular Tomorrow magazine. Garrett was also something of a bon vivant, rubbing shoulders with everyone from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Cecil B. DeMille, Aldous Huxley, Salvador Dalí, Robert Graves, Anaïs Nin, and Carl Jung to name but a few. Garrett herself was a prolific author, writing a number of novels as well as books on psychical research and three autobiographies SHOW NOTES: Eileen J. 22 Apr 2022 | #92 / McCalla Ann on Linguistics, Witchcraft & Ancestors. | 01:02:49
For episode 92 we welcome McCalla Ann, founder, podcaster and creator behind SaturnVox, a multimedia occult education and divination platform based out of New Orleans, Louisiana. McCalla was born in Atlanta, Georgia to a Catholic family on her mother's side and with Jewish heritage on her father's. Though she attended Catholic school until high school, she turned to the occult at an early age, beginning her studies on witchcraft and tarot at the early age of 15. McCalla left Atlanta for New Orleans to attend college at Loyola University, where she graduated with honours in Philosophy and World Religions with a concentration in Buddhism and its implications on language. Studying Buddhist philosophy and Chinese linguistics gave McCalla a unique perspective into language use as depicted by pictorial symbols, as opposed to the phonetic style of the west. This perspective involves an understanding of each pictorial symbol as holding multiple layers of meanings, and the ability to be able to hold all those meanings in one’s mind, so as to map out a full four dimensional picture out of these two dimensional shapes. During her Downtime in college McCalla began delving deeper into the more formal realms of occult studies, beginning her study of the Jewish kabbalah and mysticism with vigour. Upon graduation, she was more than happy to turn her attention to these studies, along with those of traditional witchcraft, full time. She currently practices a flavour of witchcraft that flawlessly blends her studies on philosophy, folklore, and linguistic arts into a fusion of animism, theurgy, and kabbalistic as well as astrological study. In the Plus show we discuss aesthetics and art is juxtaposed with magic and pull that thread into ideas around Tiphereth and explore the concept of living in joy. McCalla also discusses Saturn in further details. An illuminating and engaging conversation!
01 Apr 2025 | S2 #66 / Mademoiselle Vendredi on Thai necromancy and Famous ghosts | 00:46:59
In this episode of Spirit Box, I’m joined by professional occultist Mademoiselle Vendredi for a chat about her recent adventures in Thailand. We discuss Mademoiselle Vendredi’s encounters with local ghosts, spirits, and animist practices in Bangkok, where she was introduced to a world of supernatural entities, offerings, and hidden magical traditions. From her experiences with Thai Buddhist animism to the mysterious sounds of spectral visitors in her room, she shares firsthand accounts of a city teeming with unseen forces. We also explore the unique duality of Thai spiritual life, where Buddhist shrines coexist with older spirit houses, and offerings of red Fanta serve to appease ghosts. Mademoiselle Vendredi recounts her time in Bangkok’s Portuguese quarter, where Catholic and Thai animist traditions merge, and describes her visit to the legendary Amulet Market. A heads-up to listeners: The next section of our discussion touches on necromantic practices and esoteric rituals involving human remains, which some may find upsetting. This is an exploration of historical and cultural practices, not an endorsement or advocacy of them. Our conversation turns to the darker side of Thai occultism, where necromantic practices involving effigies of the spirits of deceased infants, known as Kuman Thong. Mme Vendredi shares insights into these controversial practices, as well as other esoteric rituals involving oils and charms crafted from human remains. In the Plus show, we take a deeper look into the case of Mae Niyam, a spirit whose shrine has become a focal point for those seeking supernatural intervention. Mademoiselle Vendredi shares the eerie story of how Mae Niyam, once a young beauty queen, became a powerful spirit known for granting wishes—so much so that people flock to her shrine to leave offerings of red Fanta and luxury items in exchange for her favor. She recounts her own experiences of receiving assistance from May Neom and how she introduced one of her mentees to the spirit, leading to uncanny results. We also discuss another prominent Thai spirit, Mae Nak, a benevolent entity associated with luck and prosperity. Often depicted as a plump woman in traditional attire, Mae Nak is revered by business owners who set up altars for her in their shops, hoping to attract success. Beyond Thai spirits, we dive into Mademoiselle Vendredi's unexpected encounter with a Bangkok taxi driver who, instead of small talk, launched into an impromptu history of the Chinese ghosts, ancient grave relocations of Bangkok. We explore the significance of these ghost stories, the interplay between Chinese and Thai magical traditions, and how urban legends in Bangkok often stem from real historical events. We round out the Plus show with a discussion on Mademoiselle Vendredi's upcoming travels to Romania, where she plans to explore vampire folklore and connect with practitioners of local magic, as well as her extended stay in London. We also take a closer look at her Pharaoh’s Club—an online space dedicated to magicians and occult practitioners seeking hands-on guidance, practical magical techniques, and insights from her global travels. This episode is a fascinating journey into folk magic, animism, and the intricate interplay between the living and the spirit world. 31 Dec 2024 | S2 #55 / Phil Hine on the Left Hand Path | 00:48:55
In this episode of Spirit Box, I sit down once again with acclaimed occult author and lecturer Phil Hine to discuss Phil’s thought-provoking book on the left-hand path in occultism. Phil trace's its historical and philosophical evolution, from Theosophy and Dion Fortune’s conservative definitions to Kenneth Grant’s esoteric interpretations and Julius Evola’s controversial ideas. The conversation delves into the origins and practices of Tantra, shedding light on the transgressive behaviours of pre-Tantra traditions and the eventual normalisation of the Śrīvidyā tradition. Phil critiques common Western misunderstandings of Tantra, arguing that true liberation within these traditions emphasises compassion for all beings rather than transcending morality to become a superhuman. Phil also shares insights into his personal journey in occultism, his initial attraction to and eventual critique of the left-hand path. We also touch on contemporary Aghori practices, their transgressive nature, and the broader cultural implications of such traditions. Join us for an engaging discussion that blends historical scholarship, personal experience, and humor, culminating in a critique of modern interpretations of Tantra and occult practices. 31 Aug 2023 | S2 #21 / Dr Tomas Vincente on The Faceless God | 00:53:54
Dr. Tomas Vincente is a scholar of ancient religion, magic and esotericism. His past work explores the emergence of Christian monotheism and the resulting decline of the chthonic cults of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. He is dedicated to recovering the integrity of this archaic spirituality of blood and fire, which has been demonised by the Abrahamic religions for two millennia. In the show we discuss his work The Faceless God. The book has a triple focus—Lovecraftian, Egyptian and Sabbatic—which may seem bizarre at first glance. Through an initiated reading of Lovecraft’s fiction, relating especially to the figure of Nyarlathotep, certain hitherto unexplored connections are revealed between European witch lore and the Egyptian mysteries of Osiris and Anubis. The claim that there was a germ of truth beneath the diabolical stereotypes and accusations of European witchcraft was advanced long ago by Margaret Murray, who argued that witchcraft was an organised cult of pagan origin, which had somehow survived the processes of Christianization. Dr Vincente’s argument is much more subtle, and closer in spirit to the more recent research of Carlo Ginzburg. He would not speak of an organised witch cult, but rather of diverse and analogous survivals of shamanistic practice, which carried forward certain symbolic and ritual elements of archaic and pre-Christian origin. The most novel aspect of his argument lies in the unearthing of the deep symbolic resonances between the lore of witchcraft, relating to the black man and the Goat of Mendes, and the archaic fertility cult of the ram-headed Banebdjedet, who was a totemistic representation of Osiris—or more precisely Osiris in union with Ra in his netherworld aspect. In the Plus show we get into similarities between the Dark Man and the King of the Fairies. We discuss the importance of art and artists and what they bring back from the dark womb. We get into why this experience happens? What is the point of it? Dr Vincente goes on to describe the response to this summons is a radical openness to profound mystery not about the application of will. Big stuff. 24 Feb 2025 | S2 #61 / The Lady of the Lake, with Joshua Cutchin and Ryan Grulich. | 01:00:10
In this episode of Spirit Box, I sit down with Joshua Cutchin and Ryan Grulich to discuss their latest film project, The Lady of the Lake. The true crime documentary follows investigator Amanda Paulson and her team as they delve into the chilling case of Hallie Illingworth, a local woman who disappeared in 1937 and was found three years later in Lake Crescent under disturbing circumstances. Her body, eerily preserved with a soap-like texture, raised more questions than answers about what really happened to her. As Paulson's team digs deeper, they uncover unsettling truths about Hallie’s tragic fate, revealing a history of violence and long-buried secrets. The investigation leads them beyond the mystery of Hallie's death, unraveling a web of disturbing stories that have remained hidden for decades and uncovering a horrifying truth about the lake's dark past and the fate of those who enter its depths. What I found particularly compelling about this project is how it challenges traditional true crime storytelling—rather than sensationalising the victim’s fate, Joshua and Ryan emphasise her humanity, offering a narrative that is both deeply personal and powerfully unsettling. We also explore the film’s folkloric and paranormal elements, discussing how myth-making shapes our understanding of places and events. Beyond The Lady of the Lake, our conversation expands into the broader theme of re-enchantment and cultural transformation. We discuss how Western society is slowly shifting away from rigid materialism towards a more spiritually integrated worldview—one where folklore, consciousness, and the unexplained are no longer dismissed but embraced as essential parts of our reality. This shift is something I’ve explored in many episodes, and here we consider how storytelling, film, and other media are playing a key role in rekindling a sense of mystery and wonder in the modern world. In the Plus Show, we take a deep dive into Joshua and Ryan’s upcoming UFO documentary series. They share insights into how they’re approaching the project, looking at UFO encounters not just as unexplained aerial phenomena but as events that have shaped human spirituality, belief systems, and cultural evolution. We talk about the challenges of tackling the extraterrestrial and interdimensional hypotheses, the reluctance of mainstream figures to engage with esoteric subjects. This was a fascinating conversation that weaves together true crime, folklore, and the unexplained, uncovering the deeper connections between these worlds. Tune in for an exploration of mystery, mythology, and the shifting tides of human consciousness. 14 Sep 2023 | S2 #22 / David Keohan, Irish Stones of Strength | 01:02:56
Today we welcome Indiana Stones himself, the one and only David Keohan. Hailing from Ireland, David is a Stone lifter, a kettlebell world champion, an artist and a musician. He’s been on a mission to recover Ireland's lost stone lifting culture and has done so through our literature and folklore. We spoke all about his stone lifting journey from his lifting of the fianna stone in Scotland which inspired his own search in Ireland. Culminating in the rediscovery of the stone described by the famous Galway writer Liam O'Flaherty in his short story ‘The Stone’. He has rediscovered 30 testing stones, a remarkable act of reclamation and celebration of this lost tradition. Through this act David has created a remarkable and unique magical act of healing of the multi-generational trauma of Ireland's colonisation. These great testing stones, now rediscovered form a chain back into our ancient past, before colonisation, before christianity and in lifting these stones once more the chain is renewed, in a feat of strength and deep ancestral healing. His work is a brilliant and inspiring intersection of folklore, magic, mythology, and strength. In the Plus show we get into ancestral work, and animism. We talk about Peig Sayers and Ghosts leading us to tell their stories. The death stone of Cú Chulainn, the Irish Hercules and to close out the show I read Liam O'Flaherty’s short story ‘The Stone’. 25 Jun 2023 | S2 #16 / Michael Le Flem on Visions of Atlantis | 01:08:00
oday we welcome Michael Le Flem to discuss his book Visions of Atlantis: Reclaiming our Lost Ancient Legacy. Michael Le Flem, M.A. is a researcher, adjunct professor of history and philosophy, columnist for New Dawn Magazine, a scuba diver and guitarist. He grew up in South Florida, and attended Florida State University, where he studied Western intellectual history and U.S. foreign policy. Using clairvoyant impressions from Edgar Cayce, Frederick Oliver, Rudolf Steiner, Barbara Hand Clow, Michael Le Flem builds a concerted scientific, philosophical and historical investigation of humanity's antediluvian achievements and Atlantis' tragic demise. At the same time, readers will see just how the story of Atlantis has evolved from the seminal account passed down by Plato almost 2,400 years ago into those of the present day, as we engage with some of its strongest proponents and harshest critics alike. More than just a dry catalog of Atlantean footnotes, Visions of Atlantis strikes at the core of the great divide between materialist reductionism and the frontiers of metaphysics, enjoining readers to reconsider some of their most deeply held beliefs about ancient technology, psychic phenomena, reincarnation, the vast unknown past, and our uncertain future. In the Plus show we get into Cuban Anomaly and Azores pyramid. We also discuss the Bosnian pyramid and the mysteries of the polar regions... and creativity and channelling. 20 Mar 2023 | S2 #10/ J.M. Hamade on Al-Khidr | 00:58:18
Today we are joined by J.M. Hamade on the subject of Al- Khidr. J.M. Hamade is an interdisciplinary artist, astrologer, writer, and educator residing in New York City. Focusing on the aesthetics of esoterica and the occult, they’re work bridges contemporary artistic practice with archaic forms of knowing. They have lectured, exhibited, and enacted live performances in the conjuration of phantom forms and ritual magic. Al-Khidr is a figure described but not mentioned by name in the Quran as a righteous servant of God possessing great wisdom or mystic knowledge. In various Islamic and non-Islamic traditions, Khidr is described as a messenger, who guards the sea, teaches secret knowledge and aids those in distress. The meaning of the name has traditionally been taken to be "the Green One" or "the Verdant One". Which connects him to folkloric figures such as the green man and spirits of spring and of ‘greening’. We discuss Khidr’s liminal nature and his role as guide and get into the mysteries of the northern poles. 30 Nov 2024 | S2 #51 / Nathanial Gillis on Necronetics and Consciousness | 00:52:17
In this episode, I sit down with Nathaniel to explore his fascinating work and groundbreaking theories on paranormal phenomena. Nathaniel introduces the concept of Necronetics, a framework that connects possession, pregnancy, and otherworldly encounters as processes that replicate life forms. We dive into the evolution of certain beings and phenomena, discussing how they often manifest in archetypal forms that mirror humanity’s collective consciousness. The first 15 minutes or so of this show were lost to the Streaming Gods so we join mid the conversation. Our conversation takes us into deep and, at times, unsettling territory, touching on the nature of gods, religion, and the ways these ideas shape our understanding of spiritual and supernatural encounters. Nathaniel shares the challenges he’s faced during his research, from the potential dangers of diving too deep into these mysteries to deciding how and where to share his findings with the world. We also draw intriguing connections between his work and Whitley Strieber’s studies on interactions with the dead, exploring what these encounters might reveal about consciousness and the unseen. Nathaniel gives us a glimpse into his upcoming book, Skin That Crawls, which will serve as an introduction to necronetics and lay the groundwork for further exploration of his theories. As his research evolves, this conversation offers a compelling look at the mysterious links between life, death, and the forces that exist beyond our understanding. In the Plus show we get deeper still into these topics really delving into the shadowlands of this subject matter. I strongly advise you to do so as this maybe the last time we have Nathaniel on the show as he maybe ending his research into this area because it has become so intense and the phenomena has been pushing back on him. A unique ethnographic study, it investigates possession, manifestations, and concepts of person and space. The djinn is an invisible spirit with a will of its own that may lurk at the bottom of your teacup or seep through your pores to possess you; they have long been an explanation for illness and misfortune or an excuse for unconventional behavior. 12 May 2023 | S2 #13 / Phil Hine on Queerying Occultures | 00:47:26
Today we welcome back the great Phil Hine on his new book Queerying Occultures. What is Queerying Occultures? 'Queerying' is a portmanteau word from 'Queer’ and 'Query'—classic Phil Hine word play. Occulture is another portmanteau word meaning 'Hidden Culture' (from ‘Occult’ and 'Culture'). The occult is Queer. Historically. Intrinsically. Radically. Wonderfully Queer. Yet at times this essential fact can feel unacknowledged in wider Occulture dialogues. Addressing this, Phil Hine’s Queerying Occultures is a collection of queer-themed essays exploring, questioning and reflecting on the diverse trajectories that might arise from applying queer questioning to occultural themes and practices. Drawing on perspectives from Queer Theory, history, Continental Philosophy, and shared experience, Hine explores subjects as diverse as Shamanism and gender-variance; the rise of the Queer Pagan approaches; the uncomfortable history of occult homophobia; Queer perspectives on Tantra, Pan, Sacred Spaces, and Crowley in Boy Bar Berlin. This far-reaching, necessary book is both a celebratory resistance text and indispensable investigation of the Queer in Occulture. In the Plus show we get into the Aghori, ideas on the left hand path and the innate queerness of the left hand path. The Shivite story of the woman who became a ghoul. 16 Apr 2021 | #57 / Aoife Anastasia Nally on 'The Spancel of Death' | 01:04:19
Aoife Anastasia Nally is an artist, performer, and theatre producer, who for the last few decades has been performing in the West End, London, but is currently based in rural Ontario, Canada. Today we discuss her research into the cursed play ‘The Spancel of Death' penned by her Great Uncle T.H. Nally, Abbey Theatre playwright and personal friend of the great poet WB Yeats. She is also a psychic medium, Seer, trance channel and occasional oracle.
The notorious play was interrupted by the Easter Uprising 1916 and subsequently abandoned by WB Yeats eventually giving rise to the belief it was cursed. Not helped in part by the content of the play, for the Spancel that lends its name to the play is nothing less than a necromantic spell of the blackest magick and based on actual events that took place in Balla, County Mayo, Ireland in 1777.
In the Plus show Aoife recounts reading WB Yeats personal magical diary and Golden Dawn notebook and her experiences as a trance medium and channel and having a history of gifted and magickal people in one's family or as she puts it ‘family business’.
Good stuff indeed.

20 Nov 2024 | S2 #50 / Vic Hyland on Music, Magic and NLP | 00:54:45
In this episode of Spirit Box, I spoke with Vic Hyland, musician, teacher, and author, about creativity, NLP, and music’s connection to magic. We delve into Vic's book 'Music Magic and NLP' wherein Vic shared his insights into the "cut-up" technique—a method popularised by David Bowie and William S. Burroughs—that involves rearranging words and phrases to unlock creative flow. This approach, Vic explains, extends beyond music and can spark ideas in all kinds of fields by tapping into the subconscious and reshaping our perceptions. We also discussed "sliding door moments," those pivotal life junctures where a single event can change everything, often guided by a mix of art, intention, and subconscious forces. Vic shared examples from music, showing how songs and symbols sometimes act as "hyper sigils"—shaping reality in unexpected ways. This led us to explore creativity’s link to manifestation and consciousness. While I’m somewhat skeptical about manifesting through thoughts alone, Vic and I agreed on the importance of engaging the subconscious meaningfully. He emphasized that true creativity requires shifting between “gears” of consciousness, balancing conscious effort with subconscious flow. In the Plus show, we delved into the deeper purpose of creativity, beyond entertainment or self-expression. For both of us, art, music, and storytelling aren’t just about creating; they’re about transforming consciousness, connecting people, and deepening our understanding of the world. Vic illustrated this beautifully, noting that creativity was once about gathering together, changing perspectives, and tapping into something magical that logic alone can't touch. In a world increasingly skeptical of the mystical, it was refreshing to reflect on the power of art to reconnect us with wonder and a sense of the unseen. 18 Mar 2025 | S2 #64 / Dr Gregory Shushan on Near-Death Experience in Ancient Civilizations | 00:48:20
In this episode of Spirit Box, I’m joined by Dr. Gregory Shushan, a pioneering researcher on near-death experiences (NDEs). He has spent over 25 years studying historical accounts of NDEs, uncovering their profound influence on religious beliefs, mythologies, and cultural understandings of the afterlife. His research, as explored in his book Near-Death Experiences in the Ancient Civilisations; The Origins of the Worlds Afterlife Beliefs, reveals striking parallels between modern NDEs and accounts from historical cultures, shedding light on how early societies interpreted these extraordinary events. In the show we explore what ancient texts reveal about encounters with the dead, the journey of the soul, and how different civilisations—from Egypt and Mesopotamia to India and Mesoamerica—understood these experiences. Gregory shares fascinating insights into how NDEs may have shaped early ideas of judgment, reincarnation, and the soul’s transition into the next world. His work also investigates the connections between NDEs, shamanism, initiation rites, and visions of the Otherworld, questioning whether these universal phenomena influenced the development of religious traditions across cultures. In the Plus show, we take a deeper dive into Gregory’s upcoming research on Greek and Roman NDEs, as well as lesser-known accounts from indigenous First Nations traditions that challenge modern assumptions about the afterlife. Beyond ancient civilizations, we also examine connections between NDEs and folklore, particularly in Irish fairy lore, where people were said to vanish into the Otherworld and return transformed. We discuss how these stories might reflect ancient beliefs about crossing the threshold between life and death, and how different cultures interpreted the journey between worlds. In 1971 he started a small occult magazine called Azoth, and in 1973 in conjunction with David Hall, and his girlfriend Janet Bailey, started a more ambitious six monthly magazine called SOTHiS. In 1978, he went to India and met with an English tantrik guru (and former student of Aleister Crowley) called HH Shri Gurudev Mahendranath (1911–1992) who was a guru of the Uttarakaula Tantric Order of northern India. 14 Jan 2022 | #81 / Kaf Ajnoun, The Fortress of the Jinn | 00:59:51
Today we will be exploring the work of explorer Kira Salak and her experiences in Libya regarding the ‘The Fortress of the Jinn' or Kaf Ajnoun. Kaf Ajnoun is a jagged ridge with several peaks, the largest being The Qala'a (castle), along the Libya/Algeria border near the town of Ghat by the Akakus Massif. As it is in the Sahara, the native peoples are the nomads of the Tuareg and Tibu tribes. Looking like a haunted citadel crowned with a magical fortress-like summit, the mountain was thus assumed the abode of mythical beings. According to Berber Tuareg mythology the ‘The Fortress of the Jinn' was once a "Hall of Council", where genies met to discuss their affairs. According to the explorer Hugh Clapperton, who visited the area in 1822, some of the inhabitants of the mountain, apparently with red hair, were heard to beat their drums at night and fire their muskets. Adventurer and traveller Kira Salak who followed the trail of Hugh Clapperton climbed to the summit with her photographer friend Bobby Model. She reached the top and back safely without any encounters; but according to her around 18 months later, during an Ayahuasca session in Peru she discovered she had been possessed by evil spirits that "entered her body when, against the warnings of the local tribesmen, she climbed a supposedly haunted mountain in Libya". The possession and subsequent exorcism will be detailed in the Plus show. Show notes: Keep in touch?

29 Dec 2023 | S2 #30 / Nathaniel Gillis on the parasitic phenomenon | 01:05:03
Nathaniel Gillis, an author and religious demonologist, with over two decades work under his belt following his experience in a haunted house. He has actively redefined the understanding of haunting phenomena, ghosts, and high strangeness and is frequently cited for his unique perspective on the demonic, emphasizing "The reason they are playing by different rules is because they are playing a different game,". Nathaniel brings a unique twist to his exploration of the Devil, demons, and unclean spirits. In his research, he suggests a potential connection between these supernatural entities and aliens. This unconventional perspective that expands the boundaries of traditional demonology and explores the intersections between different realms of the paranormal. Nathaniel posits the notion that demons engage in a form of self-replication through a process involving hybridism. According to this concept, these supernatural entities are believed to create hybrid beings through interactions with humans, which are often depicted as seductive demons. This unconventional theory suggests a link between the demonic realm and the potential for a unique form of reproduction, involving the creation of hybrid entities that share characteristics from both demonic and human origins. It is a speculative and imaginative interpretation within certain mythological and paranormal narratives. In the plus show we get into what these spirits might want? We get into some deep stuff on hybridism and how this self-replication happens. To quote Nathaniel, possession to us is pregnancy to them. To close out Nathaniel goes into some of the cases he’s investigated. Keep in touch? https://linktr.ee/darraghmason Music by Obliqka https://soundcloud.com/obliqka

28 Mar 2020 | #06 / The mythic geography of the northern polar regions & the lost book of Inventio Fortunata | 00:29:51
Episode 6. The idea that there must be a large mountain of lodestone called Rupes Nigra at the North Pole to account for the earth's magnetism goes back to at least the 13th century, not long after the invention of the compass. It was held to be surrounded by four islands with inward- flowing rivers, great mountains and inhabited by Pygmies. The source of this mythical polar geography is a lost work by an unknown author of the 14th century. The book was called the 'Inventio fortunata'. The book is said to be a travelogue written by a 14th century Franciscan friar from England who travelled the North Atlantic region in the early 1360s, conducting business on behalf of the King Edward III. He described what he found on his first journey to the islands beyond 54 degrees north in a book, "Inventio Fortunata", which he presented to the King. The geography attributed to it described bear remarkable resemblances to Hindu, Islamic and Buddhist cosmologies. The description dominated the depiction of the Polar regions on European maps with up to the 1700s, yet we know almost nothing about the contents of the book save a summary in a second text, the "Itinerarium," written by a Dutch traveller named Jacobus Cnoyen. By the late 16th century, even Cnoyen's text was missing, so most of what we know of the contents of the "Inventio Fortunata", other than its use on maps, is found in a letter from the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator to the Anglo-Welsh astrologer and occultist John Dee dated April 20, 1577. Today, we welcome astrologer Elsa, who has been exploring the astrology of people who have had Dark Man experiences. A few months ago, Elsa asked the community on the Spirit Box Discord for volunteers to have their astrological charts analyzed to see if any patterns could be identified. The work surfaced some very interesting results. Elsa starts the show by explaining how charts break down for the first 12 minutes, so if you're already well-versed in that area, you may want to skip ahead. We delve into some of the evidence in my chart and discuss the parallels and contradictions in the charts of others (no volunteers were harmed in this process). To further this exploration, Elsa reviewed the charts of actors and artists who could be said to have Dark Man-related themes in their work. In the Plus show we get into Keanu Reeves chart and delve into the themes of John Wick as angel of death and Billy Bob Thornton as Lorne Malvo the 'devilish' assassin of TV show Fargo. We get into this type of research leads you to the process of shadow work. Charles Christian is an English barrister and Reuters correspondent turned writer, podcaster, award-winning tech journalist, and sometime werewolf hunter. He now writes, talks and makes videos mainly about folklore, urban myths, history, and the weird. He was born a ‘chime child’ with a caul so, according to legend, cannot drown at sea but can see and talk to ghosts and fairy folk without fear of coming to harm... His latest book is “Shuckland: Weird tales, ghosts, folklore and legends from East Anglia’s Waveney valley” – volume one of a new haunted landscapes series – and he is currently writing an almanack of real witches and sorcerers, along with other practitioners of magic – black and white, from earliest times through until the modern era. If you are fascinated by the weird, the unexplained and the bizarre, then you’ll enjoy this fascinating road trip around what he calls the Wold Newton Triangle, where rather odd events have occurred, unmatched anywhere else in Britain. We also talk about the aforementioned werewolf hunting, and a grisly discovery he made while investigating the Highgate vampire. In the Plus show we discuss Charles’s upcoming book on Witchcraft and the legends of the Woodwose, England's analogue for the Bigfoot. And we wrap up discussing the nature of folklore. Show notes: |
