Want to create your own podcast? Learn from the producer of this podcast - Keith Marnoch. You need to know that, in a crowded podcast landscape, only about 20% of podcasts thrive long-term, with only 6% reaching 100 episodes. This episode that you are presently listening to is not there by a long shot. Still, thanks to our listeners who have stuck with us … in the past two years through our archive of episodes—as well as the high-quality guests that we intend to keep featuring—we’re committed to getting there. Many podcasts fall short due to underestimating the effort involved and overestimating their initial popularity. We all think we’re great … with amazing show ideas. However, with dedication, you can significantly broaden your audience, whether for business purposes or your own personal passion.

20 Feb 2021 | Professional Approaches to Community Connections with Steve McAllister | 00:36:20
Stay tuned to hear how journalism principles affect both the reporter and the communicator when it comes to telling your organization’s story… here on …. ‘Speaking of Media’ – the Podcast where communicators and the media come together to consider the world of mass storytelling … I’m Keith Marnoch – former journalist turned corporate communicator… Steve McAllister quickly translated early success in the community newspaper business into a formidable sports journalism career with the Canadian Press before moving into the communications field at the NHL Player’s Association and before that – at Tennis Canada where we first met and worked together. As a former online sports editor at the Globe and Mail and Yahoo! Sports… Steve believes the days of high-budget personality-driven print journalism have disappeared. But his comfort with dealing with community partners and media alike was a basis for his success both as a journalist and as a corporate communicator. Steve recently wrapped up his latest comms posting at Bruce Power in Kincardine, Ontario where he now lives… I spoke to Steve from his home via Zoom Facebook:
03 Mar 2021 | Being interviewed for Local TV News; with Tara Overholt, CityTV Calgary | 00:29:15
A Television interview is among the most intrusive and disruptive request that a communicator will receive when they are in a challenging media spotlight… …but tv also offers the biggest bang for your communications buck when you want to broadly pitch a story or a personality from your organization, in a positive light …. It can be a schizophrenic medium … If you’ve ever had to navigate a tv interview – perhaps or prepare someone else for one .. and wondered what the interviewer – the tv reporter – had to consider when they were piecing their story together, well – stay tuned. Tara Overholt of CITYTV in Calgary, Alberta is our guest – another journalist offering insights from the other side of the media microphone … here on Tara Overholt is a veteran tv reporter who moved from Ontario to Alberta in the last few years and has continued her broadcasting career as a news anchor and reporter for CityTV in Calgary… We connected with Tara via Zoom … --- And so once again, the theme of relationships between communicators and the media have once again been highlighted in this episode … You can’t really communicate broadly without engaging media so you need to engage on a regular basis / and not just get stuck on the story in front of you on any given day … … Over the long run this will spawn the benefit of having people you know at the other need of the phone line ….people who can actually help you achieve your communication goals… especially when you find yourself the focus of a negative or difficult story. Also in this episode, we discovered that general assignment reporters are not experts on every subject – perhaps not a shocking revelation… but DO take time as a communicator to educate regular beat reporters about your business – just like the way you would reach out to people outside of your organization and routine stakeholder groups; to tell them what you are up to …. For now, thanks for connecting – Speaking of Media is available on all podcast platforms; YouTube:

15 Apr 2021 | Pandemic Journalism: Graham Richardson on maintaining Quality & Scrutiny in the COVID era | 00:34:40
The Global Pandemic has affected us all … but perhaps nowhere has it been more obvious than through the channel where the stories about the pandemic have been shared – through broadcast news … But ….has the influence of this worldwide health crisis been a boom?? or a bust for television news? How crucial is local news in an era where seemingly larger stories dominate the headlines? Graham Richardson argues that the pandemic has actually revealed the true value of local news stories … In a career that has included time in local news through Alberta and later as the Ontario Bureau Chief at Queen’s Park in Toronto for Global News, Graham Richardson has since covered significant international stories that mattered to Canadians while stationed in Los Angeles for CTV National News … and now as the Chief Anchor for CTV NEWs Ottawa, he has come full circle with a valuable perspective on how his audience receives and digests the news he delivers …
20 May 2021 | Front-Line Media Relations with Steve Kee | 00:41:05
Media Relations in its purest form really hasn’t changed much over time … Media relations is essentially the practice of promoting your story or defending your position with a third-party channel that has a wide audience that extends beyond your organization’s channels. What hasn’t changed is that developing professional relationships has always been at the heart of that connection. What has evolved over time in Media Relations is the scope, speed, and demands of media … at the same time – the media itself is under greater pressure from increased competition, the need to produce more content for various platforms, and above all - decimated newsrooms through sector-wide layoffs. On this episode, we speak to a communications professional – like me a former journalist – who has specialized in media relations at the highest levels in Canada. here on ….‘Speaking of Media’ – the Podcast where communicators and the media come together to consider the world of mass storytelling … I’m Keith Marnoch – former journalist turned corporate communicator… Following our recent hiatus …I’m hoping that YOU - As a communicator - will join me for each episode to learn from industry experts on both sides of the media microphone …about tangible ways to share your stories & messages and also – perhaps as importantly - how to avoid getting caught in a negative media storm. … Steve Kee worked most notably in national radio before he entered the financial corporate communications world. He was Assistant Vice-President, Communications for Sun Life Financial as well as Director of Corporate Communications with the TMX Group which operates the Toronto Stock Exchange and Toronto Venture Exchange. He completed his corporate comms career as the Director of external communications for the Insurance Bureau of Canada. In semi-retirement, Steve now operates his own communications company and teach and educate up and coming journalists and student communicators …I had a chance to speak to Steve via Zoom from his office in Whitby, Ontario - about the current state of Media Relations and the realities of renewing more normal and connected operations as we pivot out of the global pandemic …

15 Jul 2021 | Leveraging Expert Commentary: with Carmi Levy, Technology Journalist | 00:32:43
Is there a way for you to develop a channel or opportunities for you to be seen as a media go-to expert; or even better, a pundit who can legitimately comment and provoke a story or discussion – based on the news of day that can benefit your overall comms goals?? What is the value of expert commentary? … and is your organization poised to leverage someone from within your ranks to create this subtle but potentially high-profile form of brand journalism. In this episode we speak to Carmi Levy… the London, Ontario-based Tech analyst and journalist who created an avenue to become just such a go-to technology expert. His approach and success are based on years of building solid and valuable relationships. However - the process he developed is one that can be replicated if it makes sense for your business … but AGAIN it does rely upon a great deal of relationship building. And speaking of that... I am so pleased I have a relationship with Carmi that led to his willingness to come on the podcast and share with you his insider approach to garnering this type of media coverage when we recently spoke recently via Zoom….

23 Jan 2022 | TSN's James Duthie: Canada's Best Sports Post | 00:36:08
In this episode, we go behind the desk that turned into a Sportcentre for James Duthie, TSN’s lead host and sports journalist. James’ work has earned him multiple awards including three Geminis, a Canadian Screen Award, and the Excellence in Sports Broadcasting Award from Sports Media Canada. Coincidentally I was working as a corporate communicator at TSN the day that James arrived at the network back in 1998 and was involved with promoting him as the so-called next big guy in tv sports and can fondly remember how well he dealt with being marketed as Canada’s lead sportscaster for the generation to come. No small challenge. I recently re-connected with James and we reflected on the current state of sports television by considering the future of the Olympics, soccer in Canada as well as sports media generally by re-visiting some of the fun times from an era when Canadian all-sports television was still sorting itself out. … and how he has flourished after 30 years in the business. AND what he aspires to accomplish with still plenty of gas in his sports journalist tank. --- Please SUBSCRIBE to our podcast through Apple or Amazon OR wherever you download and listen to your favourite podcasts. Heck – you can even just ask Alexa and she will find the show for you. Hopefully, you’ll also LIKE and comment on the show through our FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM and Twitter feed; as well as on My LinkedIn page where you will hear about upcoming episodes. And be sure to tell others who might enjoy it. We want to build this community of communicators to put us in a better position to create relevant content, secure great guests like James Duthie, and ultimately reach a broader audience on a weekly basis.

31 Jan 2022 | Satellite Radio Possibilities: with SiriusXM's Sarah Burke | 00:28:42
Satellite radio is often an overlooked media channel. In a world where individuals can subscribe to services that allow them to listen to their music and other programming independent of others … platforms like SiriusXM Canada have to work harder to frame their entertainment offerings to be unique and attractive to their various niche channels. If you are trying to promote a property or story that has a niche audience – satellite radio might be worth investigating rather than overlooking. This media platform drew the attention of Sarah Burke. Her career has grown alongside the evolution of satellite radio. From Rocker DJ to digital music programmer, she moved over from various stints on traditional, terrestrial radio stations finding success in various local Canadian markets, before making the leap and flourishing in this still burgeoning media in Canada. Listening to her story of the limitations but also the opportunities that satellite presents offers an insight into what communicators might want to take advantage of within this largely untapped media platform. I love bringing attention to those who in their own right bring attention to minority voices and stories. Sarah’s Women in Media podcast is well worth a listen for that very reason. Her guests have included stories from women who need to be heard, as well as some who already have amazing platforms; like recording artist Jann Arden, national tv sports anchor Ivanka Osmak, and Canadian Olympian Alysha Newman, who all tell stories from obviously a female perspective … That said, whether you’re female or male, I suggest you give Sarah’s podcast a try. You can also find Sarah on – and behind the scenes – at SiriusXM Canada as well as on her entertaining Twitter feed @BurkeTalks. Again, I hope you learned on this podcast something of value as a communicator from the career recollections – to date! – from this episode’s guest – Sarah Burke.
