12 Apr 2019Kim Churchill - Success on your own terms01:10:24

It was so nice to finally have a chance to sit down and catch up with Kim Churchill. I’ve known Kim for a long time and watched his career go from strength to strength. He’s an amazing guitarist, songwriter and singer and really took foot percussion to a new level.

Here's what we chatted about:

  • What music means to Kim
  • Flow state and allowing music and lyrics to flow through you
  • Having an attitude of openness and how this relates to manifestation
  • Writing music for success compared to writing for yourself
  • Doing what you love for your job
  • Making decisions based on fear vs positivity and excitement
  • The common trait of ‘People pleasing’
  • Kim’s approach to using a gratitude journal and how it’s helped anchor him and move through times when he feels anxious
  • How your attitude makes things whatever you want them to be
  • The transition phases to becoming an adult and what that means
  • Kim’s daily practice
  • Putting spaces into your mental stream

Some of our favourite quotes from this episode.

“Often I find that the lyrics and moments of music I’m most proud of don’t come from any cognitive understanding of a lesson learnt or a skill attained, it is an obscure semi dream like thing that I don’t understand or know how I did it”

“I try to allow my music to come from an emotive kind of creative flow, where you are not thinking”

“I made music that I literally stitched fear in to…..so I had to put it down and it was an enormous weight off my shoulders to put it down, even though it was a massive step back”

“It took me a while to reconnect to writing music for myself, and for a while there I don’t even think I enjoyed playing music”

“There are pros and cons to every career path and it’s one of the few negative things about doing what you love for your job, that sometimes you stop loving it and you have to battle to get back to it”

“We need to work hard at maintaining a grateful attitude and to fill our lives”

15 Apr 2019Harry James Angus from the Cat Empire - Vocal technique and the art of allowing01:01:11

I’m lucky enough to call Mr Harry James Angus a really good friend, he’s the twin front man of The Cat Empire and a phenomenal solo artist as well. He has done so many amazing things in music and we are so lucky to have him on the show today. Harry really opens up and shares some of his struggles with being in a very popular ‘party band’ where you are expected to ‘put on a show’. He gives us real insight into what that’s really like as well as so much more.

Here's what we chatted about:

  • Living in the Northern Rivers and having a place to come home to
  • We go into detail about the role of practice as a musician
  • Vocal technique and the art of allowing things to flow
  • Is there another road and a deeper way to find self expression
  • Confidence on stage as a performer vs a truthful performance
  • What success means to Harry
  • Writing, mixing and cannibalising songs
  • Relying on old tricks and learning how to get out of your own way

Some of our favourite quotes from this episode.

“For me, practice the last few years has been all inclusive” its’ been sitting down at the piano, singing and working on my attitude in others things as well”

“You think you have to try so hard to make the music happen and really the deepest and most powerful music is actually effortless” ….and all your effort is just a blockage getting in the way of a river of music that is always way”

“I just feel like we are crying out for performers who can find the ‘still small voice“

“I’ve gotten to this place where I’m unravelled and I’ve got to build myself back up again into something different and even stronger”

29 Apr 2019Russell Morris: Astro Physics, Dogs & Songwriting01:11:06

I recently caught up with Mr Russell Morris, a living legend of the Australian music scene this week while we were on tour for his new album 'Black n Blue Heart'.  We just had the most 'out there' conversations talking all about the origins of the universe, near death experiences, songwriting, Astro physics and Quantum physics. These are the type of conversations I love to have!

Here's what we chatted about:

  • How Russell writes so he can connect with people rather than just seeing it as a performance
  • Song Writing: ‘Thinking up’ a song vs ‘allowing’ a song
  • Russells two processes for songwriting
  • The hard working culture of Australians
  • Having a life that is based around work instead of living
  • Russell’s belief in Science and the Universe
  • Russells obsession with Astro Physics
  • Dream states and memories hidden in our DNA
  • Quantum Physics and particle transportation
  • How to change patterns of behaviour
  • How to embrace being a ‘failure’ and still maintain your enthusiasm for life

Some of our favourite quotes from this episode.

“I think songwriting is an emotional connection to our very beings”

“Just ask the questions, who cares. If you agree great. if you don’t agree ask other questions and find other answers that  you can pursue what you think life is about”

“It’s a very human attachment that we write songs, and it’s trying to express ourselves, trying to connect to other humans...wanting to belong in a way and have people feel good’

“If I just used those words it would be like eating porridge without milk”

“To fail in life is really important, and boy I’ve failed so many times but you have to keep your enthusiasm up for life”

“We are all part of this universe and we are all part of each other...imagine the generations that have gone into you!”

“Life at a quantum level is magical”

“We are children of the super nova’s”

“We are the universe that has come out of minerals and rocks, standing up and looking at itself”

“Your molecular body is just distributed back into the universe”

22 Feb 2020Medical Marijuana - Sharing Our First Hand Experience00:29:52

The resurgence of cannabis as a miraculous healing medicine is a great cause for optimism in the battle against cancer and a system that many of us are losing faith in.

Take your health into your own hands peeps!!! Don’t have blind faith in natural therapies OR conventional medicine.

This is a time to be open minded. The cure might be closer than you think!

This is a very special addition. I shared a video on my socials the other day about our experience with Medical Cannabis and my father in-law. I received an overwhelming response with so many questions so we set up this podcast to answer some of those. This was also a great excuse to finally get my lovely wife Danni on the show!

Medical Disclaimer: This page is for informational purposes only and may not be construed as medical advice. The information is not intended to replace medical advice offered by physicians

Here's what we chatted about:

  • How Danni’s Dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 Small Cell Lung cancer and given 3 months to live.
  • How his first round of chemotherapy nearly killed him and why it was no longer an option.
  • How the 90-day protocol Danni put her Dad on gave him a new lease on life.
  • How the medical system works in relation to medical cannabis.
  • How Danni and Ash got started with research alternative therapies.
  • How Danni brought up the topic of medical cannabis with her father who was quite conservative.
  • The cost of alternative treatments involving straight CBD Oil and THC.
  • Information on how to find the correct dosage for you
  • How CBD and THC work synergistically to fight cancer.
  • The importance of transforming your diet.
  • Daily practices - using a gratitude journal as a family.
  • Exercise and Breathwork - chanting, acupuncture, neuro link, and an amazing local GP.
  • How important HOPE is in surviving cancer.
  • How we used a high dosage vitamin C and B drip.
  • Joe Tippens and dog worm tablets.
  • Making your own oil.

22 Apr 2020Mindset for lockdown00:21:55

In Ash's first monologue for Soulful Conversation he talks about mindset tips and tricks that are useful for lockdown and of course any time.   Placing too much emphasis on the many things that are out of our control can be dangerous.   Turn off the news it promotes fear which suppresses the immune system by triggering the flight or fight response and renders us powerless through drawing our attention to things that,  by definition we can't change.  Ash is suggesting we take an opposite approach and focus strongly on the things we can change which happen to be the very subject matter of Soulful Conversations!
Mindset, wisdom and daily habits for improving the mind, the physical body and spiritual  connection.  This is a time to be ambitious and optimistic in areas that we can change and draw on taoist,  buddhist,  self help and personal growth writings to help us face the things we can't change.
The first episode of the Lockdown edition of Soulful Conversations.

30 Apr 2020Kate Ceberano - Lockdown and observing what matters.00:41:12

I had a chat with the amazing Kate Ceberano from her home during lockdown.   Kate is warm, welcoming and humble.  She was insightful and philosophical.   I was really looking forward to this chat,  and I must say it really did surpass my expectations and I feel like I learned a lot.   In this episode we chat cover...

Bob Dylan being a messenger.

Literature as a documentary.

Using music as a vessel to mark moments in time.
Being authentic with your art.

The beauty of jamming.

Getting on stage with the Finn brothers when you weren't actually invited.  AWKS!

Shameful Enthusiasm.

Ash's Mum

Being at the top of your game.

Desiring to be somewhere you are not.

Not being in the moment

Enjoying the journey

The conversation that takes place with music.

The true measure of success.

Technology interrupting special moments.

Regret

humility

observing what matters

31 May 2020The New Normal - Lessons from Lockdown00:12:48

I don’t believe in letting external realities dictate my inner reality so I worked hard during these dark days to keep mentally resilient and focus on what I had power to change.   I resisted the temptation for things to be different to what they were and focused on what I could.   What am I good at?  How can I bring in some money to keep us afloat?  What do people need?  Well I know that I am good at music,  I know I am good at adapting,  I am good at communicating and I have some skills that people might want.   So first up and within a matter of days I set up online guitar lessons, vocal coaching, online private gigs all on the Zoom platform and some money started to filter in.   This was by no means my dream job or what I saw myself doing but I realised it wasn’t about my ego.  It’s firstly about feeding my family and secondly embracing what is and thirdly if I am going to do something I am going to do it the best possible way I can, so I focused on delivering the goods 100% to whoever was good enough to employ my services.  And that felt great!

It is such an uncertain time and uncertainty can cause people to be paralysed with fear causing procrastination.  You might want to sit and watch the news to stay informed.  I can tell you I have not watched the news in over a decade and I still manage to stay informed.   The news builds fear and fear is one of the most destructive forces in your life.  It becomes a habit and gives you every reason why you can’t do x y and z and if you believe you can’t do it you are absolutely right!!  I prefer to strive for the things I want and leave it up for life itself to tell me what I can’t do.  But it’s my job to strive not to decide what I can’t do before I have even tried.

It’s not just in live music but in any situation.   As we confront the so called “New Norm” we should realise that change itself is the “New Norm”.   If you can think outside of the box and take action you will be rewarded.   Not just financially but if you can reach out to your wider community they may appreciate it more than you could ever guess.  You will learn new things by challenging yourself and that is one of the greatest gifts you can get from any situation.

Something in the human spirit dies when we feel we are in a rut.  Adversity is the challenge that when met with open arms becomes the catalyst for growth.

11 Jan 2021The return of a surfing icon, Brendan 'Margo' Margieson, emerging from the darkness to find healing in ocean.00:45:18

Brendan "Margo" Margieson changed surfing forever with his progressive powerful style.  He was the first superstar freesurfer.  Maining he didn't have to go in comps to be sponsored.  He just had to ripp and be Margo.  And that he did... he was voted by his peers to be the best surfer in the world at one point.

I want to thank Margo from the bottom of my heart for really opening up in this most Soulful of Conversations.  Some of the subjects we cover here we're not the easiest to talk about.

If you know nothing about surfing but have found yourself in a dark place you will get a lot out of this.  Thanks again Margz!

13 Mar 2019Ziggy Alberts: Part 1 - Creating Positive Changes00:29:36

Welcome back to Soulful Conversations with Ash Grunwald. Today I’m chatting with Ziggy Alberts who is just nearing the end of his 34 show tour of Australia and New Zealand. This young dude is just ‘ripping’ at life right now.  At just 24 he is an absolute leader for his generation, an amazing songwriter, musician, environmentalist and incredible surfer!

Here's what we chatted about:

  • Travelling the world, touring life and reassessing your goals.
  • The Value of coming together to listen to live music regardless of your background and having an anchor point of a higher purpose through music.
  • Meditation
  • Your internal conversation is THE most important thing.
  • The evolution of the music industry
  • Social media and the multigenerational challenge we face with dependency issues related to social media

Some of our favourite quotes from this Ziggy Alberts in this episode.

“It is a beautiful thing, those mistakes that happen when you are on stage... it makes the whole situation a little more humane and when you relax it becomes this really powerful moment together for myself and the crowd”

“We are faced with one of the most addictive and unregulated pieces of technology that we have access to from a really young age”

“If we can use social media for learning, for connecting people, for addressing issues, if you can do all that, and then click out, we potentially as a generation have the opportunity to address dependency [on our devices]....We can make good of it or let it consume us”

“You can be on stage in front of however many people….but If you don’t have a good internal conversation with yourself or relationships with your family and friends it means nothing.”
