08 Nov 2021PTSD: Facts VS Fiction00:56:16
As a therapist, Virginia Cruse was becoming frustrated with the rumors her clients heard about PTSD that kept them from getting better.  Why did so many of them believe that PTSD had no cure?  That they couldn’t have PTSD because they were not in direct combat?  That they didn’t “deserve” to have PTSD, or didn’t “deserve” to get better?  The answer hit a nerve with Cruse: no one had taken the time to explain PTSD to Service Members in a way that made sense. Soldiers were losing their resiliency and optimism in a culture that propagated misinformation and went against the facts about PTSD, facts that are necessary to know in order to recover good mental health and salvage important relationships. Virginia Cruse, LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor specializing in Military Issues and Combat-Related Trauma. 08 Mar 2021What does Unionized Social Work look like?00:28:07

What would a Union for social workers look like? How can you start making changes towards this for your own workplace? Listen in to hear more from Trisha and Joyce.

"I'm a Chicago native who grew up in a Union home, both of my parents are organizers. I received my Master at the University of Illinois Chicago, and I've been doing community-based medical social work ever since. In my free time I hang with my kids, and bake." - Joyce Klein

"I'm Trisha- the angry, tech-savvy Social Worker on a mission to improve the lives of our clients by improving working conditions and incomes of all Social Service Workers. I hope to one day become upwardly mobile and finally afford to move my family out of my parent's basement. I attended NEIU for my BSW and UIC for my MSW. I grew up in a town just outside Chicago in a household with one parent in a union and the other parent, without. I've seen the difference that collective bargaining can make. It's time for Social Workers to rise up to demand improvements for ourselves and better social care for our communities." - Trisha Anderson

This episode we cover how to overcome barriers (internal and external) barriers to entrepreneurship as a Social Worker. We talk about some of the common barriers we face, systemic issues, and how you can use the skills you already have to start TODAY. Yes, no website, no social media, just STARTING.

Click here for the Social Work Entrepreneurship Incubator

About our guest:

Christina Broderick-Royes, LMSW is an activator. A futurist and visionary leader. As a clinically-trained licensed social worker, a certified school social worker, a former psychotherapist, a certified school social worker, an adjunct professors and published author, she understands the struggles and rewards of working in social service. Tired of being told she could “only do so much,” Christina felt called to break through the industry glass ceilings to maximize her impact and income. And she now averages 5-figures of revenue a month (sometimes even 5-figures in one day!) and is projected to do almost $300,000 this year!

22 Jun 2020Going the therapy route? LISTEN IN!00:52:25

In this episode, I talk with Lesly Rodriguez, MSW, ACSW, and a USC alum! She has years of experience with direct clinical practice and theory mastery. We discuss the world of social work, where we have been, where we are going, and how our culture is shifting in this moment!

Historically, the social work field has normalized burnout and a lack of emotional support and specialized knowledge after grad school is all too common. I'm not okay with this and am making it my mission to see that new social workers have a different experience! I'm striving to create a community where clinical social workers feel like they have the resources and tools they need to feel CONFIDENT when helping clients through the therapeutic process and they have the emotional support they need for guidance and to be the best they can be.

I am starting this by helping social workers who are new to the field and who want to purse the clinical route. Many feel unsure of their clinical skills, need to fine-tune their documentation, and want to learn from others in the field who are actually DOING the work.

If this sounds like you, then the Essentials for Future Therapists is created specially for you! Listen in to hear more, see if you relate to our stories at all, and shoot me a DM in Instagram to be added to the VIP (Very Interested Professionals) List from some $$ off!

I also have an announcement for you at the very end of the episode, so be sure to listen to the end!

09 Nov 2020International Social Work00:31:24

Is international social work as glamorous as it seems? Maybe but you will need to put in a lot of work and be prepared for these challenges.

This week we talk with Regina Scheitel, MSW who is a clinical social worker who went from Los Angeles, CA to Austria! She has adapted to a new country and culture; she gives us her personal insight about what it was like transitioning from CA and using a recovery model to a country heavy in Freudian Analysis. How she manages her stress and honors her boundaries to prevent burnout, and she shares her tips on what you need to know if you are wanting to take the leap into social working in a different country.

5 ways to prepare for international social work:

1. Have local language fluency for competence, ethics, and integrity

2. Develop your cultural competency

3. Research the laws around therapy and transitioning your social work degree

4. Factor in time, expected salary, and cost of living

5. Have realistic expectations for time it takes to adjust, salary compensation, and culture adjustment.

4 Tips for preventing burnout in a high-stress position

1. Leave work at work, literally do not even bring your phone to your car.

2. Ongoing relationship building with loved ones

3. Exercise

4. Remember your "why"

Here's more about Regina...

"I am a clinical Social worker, specializing in the field of mental health. My focus has been in working with those with severe persistent mental illnesses as well as working with their families. I have a masters in social work from CSULB, a masters in business with a focus in European Studies and Project Management from the University of Applied Sciences in Burgenland Austria, and am currently a PhD social work student at the University of Trnava in Slovakia. 01 Jul 2020Calling her out! Overcome Imposter Syndrome 00:34:06

This week, I talk with Harleny Vasquez, MSW about how we get trapped in a cycle of imposter syndrome and how to break free of that cycle.

She first shares her inspiring story of being raised in an environment with a lack of resources but found her drive, and her true WHY for her success. She refused to let anything get in her way of crushing her goals and working in so many different areas of social work.

We then talk about what imposter syndrome is, who it effects, the cycle of it, and how to overcome it.

Once we can identify what it looks like, we can begin to anticipate it and change our actions. The cycle of imposter syndrome starts with our limiting beliefs which leads to the story we tell ourselves, which then turns into self sabotaging behavior. This self-sabotage feeds into our ongoing limiting beliefs and the cycle continues.

Even when we recognize this cycle, imposter syndrome never truly goes away for anyone, we develop better and stronger tools for managing it, and keeping it out of our way.

Harleny ends with some POWERFUL activities to change our negative thinking and control our imposter syndrome so we can pursue our success.

1. Call her out - Name your imposter syndrome. (BYE HATER!)

2. Identify your limiting beliefs

3. Change your negative limiting beliefs

4. Reframe them into positives

5. Set Goals with timelines

6. Say your biggest fears out loud or write them down.

"Social work is what you make it; its what u bring to the table."
