From time to time we all will face conversations that we anticipate to be difficult and that we want to avoid. A “difficult” conversation is one whose primary subject matter is potentially contentious and may elicit strong emotions that can be hard to predict or control.

Initiating a difficult conversation can feel daunting and there is a natural tendency to delay taking action in the hopes that the issue will be resolved without our intervention. But this is rarely the case. Procrastination won’t make problems disappear and in fact, if issues are ignored they are likely to escalate and become even more difficult to resolve, causing negative consequences both for all those involved and for the wider organization. It is far better to reframe the problem at an early stage as this can help to nip problems in the bud, prevent the situation from deteriorating and maintain good communication and working relationships with colleagues.

It starts with self-awareness—identifying the specific habits that may be hindering social interactions.

Your thoughts create your reality and shape your life.

In other words, the conditions and circumstances of your life are the result of your thoughts and beliefs.

  • Do you want to improve your connections?
  • Do you want to be perceived as warm and not cold?

To do so, you need to start with your thoughts. You need to get rid of the thoughts that make you stay where you are. You need to to start thinking different thoughts, so that your new thoughts become your reality.

Since your thoughts become reality, you need to be careful of what you think.

To create the reality you want:

  • Become aware of your thoughts.
  • Avoid the ones you do not want.
  • When a negative thought occupies your attention, immediately replace it with a positive, high-value thought.
  • And always avoid negative, repressing, and unhappy thoughts.

In a word:  Nothing.  Even though it doesn’t feel that way, being rejected is more about the other person than it is about you.

Just changing your perspective on rejection can help you overcome your fear of it, and help you see that getting rejected is just another part of living.

In episode 118 we’ll review the three thoughts behind all of the distress we feel when we get rejected.  They start as one small thought and then snowball into a hundred thoughts all supporting your belief that these things are true.

Your task in overcoming your fear of rejection is to get rid of your belief in one or more of these three thoughts.  They are poison to your mind.
