05 Oct 2022Resentments in Sobriety - Relapse Fuel? Peace Killer? How to Deal… 00:22:20

Resentment is bitter indignation and a negative reaction to perceived mistreatment. Every time you see something, or hear something, it gets processed through your filter. You’re either going to process it as a personal assault on your pride or ego - or you will have acceptance.

Talking about emotional perception and the role it plays in resentment, Mike & Glenn discuss resentment in addiction and in recovery. What fuels it? How does it start? And more importantly, ways to combat resentments, ways to live so you don’t pile them up - and when they do come, ways to dissect and diffuse them.

15 Mar 2023PRO SOBRIETY! - AA Alternative(s) Part 5 - Refuge 00:24:51

How is your recovery program like a chocolate chip cookie? Everyone has their own recipe that they think is best and it all has to do with the ingredients. Will those ingredients include AA, or will they include a different recovery program like Refuge Recovery?

At a table for 3 in the coffee shop talking with Tori, a substance abuse counselor, and her own experiences with Refuge Recovery. Refuge Recovery and the Buddhist path to recovery is all about the path to awakening - awakening being the end of suffering. Craving causes suffering. Addiction causes suffering.

26 Oct 2022Welcome Steve G - A Story of Experience, Strength & Hope00:32:04

Steve G joins Sober.Coffee at a table for three and gives us a glimpse into his life and how he found sobriety. A sneak peek - it took losing everything over a 20 month period, being homeless and living in the back of a Jeep Renegade, then finding himself in a surprise intervention to get Steve on the path to recovery.

Now, 30 years sober, Steve still goes to a lot of meetings. Why? Because nothing will so much ensure immunity from drinking as intense work with other alcoholics. Besides sponsoring others, going to meetings, and being available to meet for coffee - Steve focuses on sober living, and is the Executive Director for RCOSA, a sober living community in Chicago.

20 Sep 2023"Boiling the Frog" - What does Anti-Surrender look like?00:31:13

Success in getting on the sober path is surrender. At the coffee shop, Mike & Glenn discuss what surrender and struggle look like when you don’t surrender, anti-surrender, and how it’s like boiling a frog.

How do you boil a frog? ‘Boiling the frog’ is referring to the premise that if you stick a frog in boiling water, he jumps out immediately. Put him in warm water then raise up the water temperature a little at a time, he doesn’t notice - then he’s boiled. Alcoholism is progressive, it gets worse and worse and worse. It’s like turning the temperature up on the water the frog is swimming in.

Glenn talks about the recovery journey of a gentleman he sponsored in AA who started with an attitude of anti-surrender - and the pain, suffering, refusal and ego that accompanied the anti-surrender.

After listening to this episode, jump into the next one where Glenn talks about the same person - but later in his journey when he discovers true surrender.

05 Apr 2023AA Proof (Not 100) - Turning Faith to Fact !!00:29:37

Is there 100% proof that sobriety can work for you?

Recovery Research Institute says, “AA has helped countless tens of millions of individuals recover from addiction” and Stanford University tells us, “AA is the most effective path to alcohol abstinence…the fellowships help more people achieve sobriety than any therapy does.”

Listen in as Glenn and Mike talk about AA, introduce a real life case study of someone 12 months into the program, and discuss what their response is to someone who says AA doesn’t work. Sometimes it’s a matter of following AA because you have faith it will work, until you get to where you see the fact that it does work.

10 May 2023Claudia's Story00:33:12

Friend in the house! It’s a table for 3 today with Claudia joining Mike and Glenn in the coffee shop sharing her story of experience, strength and hope. Claudia shares that you are never too old to get sober - she started her recovery journey at 50.

Claudia didn’t have alcoholic parents, she came from a comfortable family and always had good grades, was thoughtful of others and sometimes a shy girl. But at 26 she found herself divorced without the confidence or emotional sobriety she needed and was navigating life half-heartedly - looking for people, places and things to bring her back security. She started dealing with daily life with a drink. It wasn’t until her second DUI and a night in jail that she knew she was ready to stop drinking.

08 Mar 2023Introducing Quint: Sobriety & Animation 00:30:59

At a table for three, Quint shares his experience with alcoholism from growing up with a father who drank, and his own road to recovery. Quint began drinking at 15 and gradually discovered anxieties and concerns would be magically misted away through a haze of beer and wine - and that started a pattern for the next 40 years.

Eventually deciding his future was more important than alcohol, Quint started his road to recovery. The first 5 years were spent trying to stop drinking with bargaining, “I’ll only drink this much” or “I’ll only drink between this hour to this hour”. The “I can outthink this” and “I can outdo this” didn’t work because sure as eggs is eggs he couldn’t do it by himself. Quint recalls his experience with alcoholism felt unique - he didn’t relate to others in AA who had flipped cars, lost their jobs, or manhandled significant others. But when he finally found the right AA group and a sponsor - that was the start of his recovery journey.

Quint is currently leading the company Shoot You Animation & Video production with employees in Amsterdam, New York and Los Angeles.

10 Jul 2024The Value of Trust00:20:37

14 Sep 2022Key Learning: “Never Go Back” 00:18:10

Do you have relationships that are hurting your efforts to sobriety? Over a cup of coffee, Glenn shares his catalyst to moving towards sobriety - starting by getting out of a strenuous relationship because he was trying to get sober on a foundation that shook.

Dr. Henry Cloud, in his book “Never Go Back: 10 Things You'll Never Do Again” gives this advice: do the hard thing. When you recognize you’re in a situation where you’re back-and-forth, back-and-forth - do the hard thing and get out of that situation. Your life is going to suck for six months. But at the six month mark you’ll look back and say “my life is so much better”.

22 Mar 2023“Get Off the Counselor’s Floor” - Challenges in Sobriety00:28:31

Talking about challenges in sobriety, Mike & Glenn are in the coffee shop and the conversation isn’t all unicorns and rainbows. From challenges like emotions, habits, relationships, money issues, loneliness, boredom, mental health issues and the fear or relapse - the biggest challenge for Glenn? Change. “If I wasn’t open and willing to change, then I wouldn’t have been able to take even 5 steps in this program.”

Psychic change is the change that’s going to take away your obsession and make you acknowledge cravings for what they are. Then there are physical changes. Glenn had to physically stand up off the counselors floor at some point and put his left foot in front of the right foot and say: what challenges are in front of me right now?

28 Sep 2022"How's Your Year Going" ?? Laying a Sober Foundation00:26:01

The foundation to building a life in recovery doesn’t always start with lofty goals and high expectations. Sometimes slow and steady builds the sturdiest foundation. The question “how are you doing now that it’s the middle of the year?” starts an open conversation about what the middle of the year and the middle of recovery looks like for Mike  and Glenn - and just how much it has to do with how they started.

The answer to the question of how you are doing depends on whether you’re comparing now to the start of the year, or the start of recovery, or even the start of the yesterday. Sure, someone might be doing great compared to before sobriety, but Mike & Glenn suggest that how you find growth is to ask, “are you doing better today than yesterday?” It’s part of being patient, and if you are thinking about changing your lifestyle, know that recovery is going to take time. It’s important to let it play out, be patient, and lay that foundation.

The Sober app is a safe space where anyone suffering with addiction, or wanting to stay connected, can go to find recovery tools or get help virtually. From meetings and education to resources and community, it can be found on the app.

28 Dec 2022#Trending Series: Pt 5: Signs a Loved One Has a Drug Addiction00:27:52

Mike & Glenn sit down in the coffee shop to discuss the signs and symptoms of drug addiction. Are they experts? No. But Mike shares that drugs are part of his story of recovery. With almost everyone he knows, they know someone who has a tragic addiction to Fentanyl or Opioids.

Knowing the signs and symptoms to look for can help loved ones recognize a problem, and Sober.Coffee has collected a list of physical and behavioral signs of drug addiction. Keep in mind, some of these symptoms - like depression - might not be a drug addiction. But if you’re thinking it - pay attention to it.

Ultimately, if you think a loved one has a drug addiction, know that you cannot fix someone else’s drug problem. You can find resources for you:

  • Al-Anon
  • Individual Therapy

Silly Sips Coffee donates 10% of profits to Child Mind Institute, a non-profit organization that supports kids and provides resources and tools for children who struggle with mental health such as depression, anxiety and more. It’s personal for Kyle as his struggle with alcohol began by self medicating with alcohol to curb his own anxiety. Josh as well - he admits he could have used this kind of help when he was younger.

17 Aug 2022“Serving The Coffee” … Literally…00:24:32

In this episode Glenn talks about mindset and the shift he experienced when he learned to ‘serve the coffee’. In the past, everything he did he could watch it turn around and benefit him in the future. It was a transaction. It was also bullshit.

Serving The Coffee is a mindset of serving others and thinking of yourself last. Serving quietly means no expectation of accolades. You do it when you don’t feel like it. You do it even if you’re angry with the other person. It sets the tone for the day. Research shows that those who consistently help others experience less depression, greater calm, fewer pains and better health.

Glenn & Mike challenge you to do one thing for somebody else. Just try it. Serve the coffee.

11 Jan 2023James C - A Lover of Addicts00:29:02

You can learn from anyone. You can learn what to do. You can learn what not to do. If you listen to their story, listen to their life and the challenges they face, if you truly listen - their story is suggesting to you how to overcome an obstacle in your life. That’s what we hear from James C.

James shares that he was given the gift of surrender on a cold January night in Michigan. It was the end of the road. He was highly addicted to alcohol, heroin, methadone, and valium and spent detox in a dingy, dark room. On the third night, sick as a dog, James tells us about the circumstances that led to his surrender, his gift of sobriety and the willingness to do the hard work that would be facing him after detox.

09 Nov 2022Steve G - Returns - Exploring Sober Living & Introducing RCOSA00:26:57

Through his own path to recovery, Stevie G stayed at a halfway house. While there, he found connections and moved forward in his own recovery, but he saw some things that were disturbing, as if the halfway house had lost the focus on helping recovering alcoholics. After leaving, Stevie was presented with the opportunity - a friend owned some 3 flats - and Stevie said “I think we can do better for people”. That was 30 years ago and he continues to work in the sober community with RCOSA sober living.

RCOSA is a privately funded non-profit organization providing sober living where individuals work on building a foundation for sobriety through love and support, and incredible counselors with lots of experience to help individuals cognitively and emotionally. Everyone gets their own room with different buildings for different demographics like age,and there are two groups a week with group and individual counseling. RCOSA has created a space where people feel like they are vested in their recovery, and have fun along the way. The facilities are top notch, costs are reasonable, and the location is very accessible. Individuals walk into an instant community.

Benefits and focuses of sober living:

  • Community
  • Accountability and structure
  • Direction and Guidance
  • Incredible Counselors: individual and group

Thousands of people have gone through RCOSA. The average length of stay is a little under a year. Why? Because

the idea of 28 day treatment is unrealistic - individuals are not cured after 28 days. It takes 6 - 12 months to change those neural pathways and stay at RCOSA is a minimum of 3 months. That’s where the value of RCOSA is, and that is why esteemed alumni are seeing such a benefit.

31 May 2023Special Guest: Lisa Avelleyra- Author of “Get Me To The Abbey”00:25:04

“I didn’t care about anything - except Vodka.” That’s the opening line of Lisa Avellyra’s book, and she joins Mike and Glenn in the coffee shop to talk about her story of experience, hope and strength.

Lisa was a lifelong drinker - drinking in college, drinking after college. After 40 years of drinking it caught up with her. Lisa didn’t want to live without drinking, but she knew she couldn’t sustain how she was drinking - so the easiest path in her eyes was to not live anymore. She failed at that objective. The beginning of her book starts here, at rock bottom. It could have been the end of her story, but it was just the beginning.

19 Apr 2023ProSobriety Series: - AA Alternative(s) Part 6 -Celebrate Recovery00:29:54

Darren joins Mike & Glenn in the coffee shop to talk about Celebrate Recovery. Darren has dealt with alcohol addiction in his own life for 30 years, off again and on again. He went to hundreds of AA meetings but never really connected with it - then found Celebrate Recovery.

Celebrate Recovery is about hurts, habits and hangups. While Celebrate Recovery is still a 12 step program with very similar steps to AA, Celebrate Recovery talks about God and Jesus and is very religious based including prayer, scripture and worship songs. Each of the 12 steps adds bible verses that connect to the step and members participate in a step study as a group instead of with a sponsor.
