23 Apr 2024 | The "California Sober" Movement: Is Marijuana a Safe Alcohol Replacement? | Justin Maziarz | 00:59:27
Alcoholics Anonymous, or “AA,” has helped millions worldwide break free from the chains of alcohol addiction. However, the one-size-fits-all program has alarmingly low long-term success rates while advocating for notorious rigidity around abstinence and spirituality. Why has Alcoholics Anonymous been so impactful over the years? Is “AA” the best way to get, and stay, sober in 2024? Is there a place for alcohol moderation in the life of a former abuser? Is Marijuana a safe and effective substitute for alcohol for alcohol abusers? Host Jesse Carrajat and co-host Justin Maziarz unpack and answer these important questions on Episode 20 of the Live Deep podcast. Don’t miss it! 18 Sep 2024 | Taking Back Sober: The Forgotten History and True Meaning | 00:37:16
What does it truly mean to be "sober"? In today’s world, we mistakenly limit the definition to alcohol abstinence, but the word’s historical roots paint a broader and more powerful picture. 26 Jan 2024 | Deep vs. Surface Habits, and how “Small Hinges Swing Big Doors” | JT Frank of Consequence of Habit | 01:06:04
Social media, substances, work, streaming, pornography…pick your poison. The frequency and intensity in which humans disconnect, or disassociate, from the speed and stress of everyday life is unprecedented, and growing worse each year. If left unchecked, these tendencies become deeply embedded habits that chronically steal our attention and rob us of the ability to live meaningful, healthy lives in connection with ourselves, and others. How do we break free from these habits? JT Frank, founder of Consequence of Habit (COH) and host of the COH Podcast, joined the #LiveFitBreakFree podcast to help answer this pivotal question. We discuss the formation and infestation of habits in our lives, how they impact us, and explore actionable steps to break free from addictions and harmful habits. We also discuss the commoditization of human attention, and the importance of finding presence as a daily practice. In addition to founding COH, JT is a United States Air Force veteran, proud father of 3, and ambassador of Athletic Brewing Company. 24 Dec 2023 | Beating Addiction Through Powerlifting | Mike Weshnak | 00:45:15
Mike Weshnak is a New Jersey-based competitive powerlifter, skateboarder, husband, father and real estate professional. Mike joins us on LFBF episode 3 to share his incredible journey, from rebellious youth on the Jersey Shore, through years of active addiction, to marriage, fatherhood, and celebrating 8 years of sobriety this January.
In this episode, Mike shares his journey from a younger, party lifestyle in San Diego, to descending into the depths of addiction, and eventually finding his purpose and freedom through powerlifting and his family. Mike discusses the impact of addiction on his relationships, and the turning point that led him to seek help. Mike also talks about his deep passion for powerlifting and how it has become intertwined with his recovery journey. Mike is a walking testimony of personal growth and transformation.
Addiction can lead to a secret life and alter egos, causing a disconnect between one's true self and the image presented to others. Support from loved ones, especially a partner, can play a crucial role in recovery and provide motivation to change. Powerlifting can serve as a positive outlet and source of discipline for individuals in recovery, offering a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Gratitude and acceptance of one's past experiences, even the difficult ones, can contribute to personal growth and resilience.

19 Apr 2024 | The Complete History of Alcohol; the "King of Intoxicants" | Dr. Edward Slingerland, Author/Professor | 00:59:10
We think there’s a TON you don’t know about alcohol, and this episode will change that.
Today we are joined by author and Distinguished University Scholar and Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Edward Slingerland. Dr. Slingerland discusses the adaptive function of intoxicants, particularly alcohol, in human society. He explains that humans are a unique species, heavily dependent on technology and tools, and that our hyper-social nature and cooperation with strangers contribute to our attraction to intoxicants.
While alcohol can, in moderation, offer some psychological advantages, the availability of highly potent distilled alcohol and the shift from communal to private consumption have increased the risks associated with alcohol. In this conversation, Dr. Edward Slingerland discusses the modern invention of access and its contribution to alcohol abuse. He explains how alcohol has emerged independently in different cultures and why it is considered the king of intoxicants. Dr. Slingerland also shares insights on assessing the role of alcohol in one's life and the potential costs and benefits associated with its consumption. He concludes by discussing his upcoming projects and books, including a defense of intelligent hedonism.

In honor of Alcohol Awareness Month this April, we are kicking off a five-part series exploring all-things alcohol. Today we are joined by Kori Turner, LPC, LAC, ADS, a highly respected Licensed Addiction Counselor and therapist-trainer based in Colorado. We sat down with Kori for a deep dive into alcohol use disorder, how to know if we "have it", can problem drinkers be "fixed," and much more. We also unpacked the history of alcohol treatment in America, examined treatment options available today and their effectiveness, and explored initial steps someone can take to kickstart the healing process. Kori provided some incredible resources for further information and exploration (listed below), and encourages any individuals with drinking-related issues to seek help now. Education, guidelines for drinking, and support tools: Rethinking Drinking Directory of peer support groups for changing drug and alcohol use: Faces and Voices of Recovery Screening, Intervention and Referral: Substance Abuse, and Mental Health Services Administration Takeaways - Addiction is a chronic brain disease that affects the reward pathway in the brain. - Alcohol use disorder is a clinical diagnostic term for alcohol addiction. - The brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that gives a sense of pleasure and motivates behavior. - Addiction can lead to a chronic dopamine deficient state, affecting emotions, behaviors, and relationships. - Alcohol use disorder is increasing, and there is a strong correlation between addiction and mental health issues. - The medical disease model is used to understand addiction and inform treatment recommendations. - Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) provides social support for recovery, while clinical treatment focuses on the medical model. - Labels like 'alcoholic' can be reductionistic and may not be embraced by everyone in recovery. Alcohol use disorder is a spectrum, and individuals do not have to identify as an alcoholic to seek help and make changes in their relationship with alcohol. - Setting goals and working with a professional can help individuals develop a treatment plan that suits their needs and preferences. - The future of alcohol use disorder treatment may involve psychedelic-assisted therapy and advancements in understanding the brain. - Resources such as the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and Screening and Brief Intervention (SBIRT) can provide valuable information and support. He taught that temperance is the key to enjoying these pleasures without letting them rule our lives.
