James Houck is the speaker, at the time of this recording in 1996 he had been sober 60 years, getting sober in 1934. He is not a member of AA but is a member of the Oxford group. He is speaking as a guest of AA at this particular meeting, and presents a very interesting perspective on the early days and formation of AA. Repost from 2018.

Every now and then you hear a speaker in AA and for whatever reason what they said really resonates with you and makes an impression that stays with you for forever, this guy is one of those folks for me. I only heard him speak live once at an AA Roundup in San Francisco "around" 1986 (give or take a year or 2).  Last year I reposted the one speak I had from him and shortly after I got an email offering me this recording from 2004 and they were kind enough to mail me the cd so I could rip it for you. I have had this for almost a year and the last day of pride month seems like the perfect time to post it.

Dr Bob, one of the founders of AA is speaking in December of 1948 in Detroit Michigan about the founding of AA. Most of the recordings of Dr Bob are really poor quality and its obvious this was recorded on a really old microphone.

That said, I was able to get out a nasty hum and it is the clearest recording that I have heard. It does get a little tinny/muddy right toward the end.

If you have never heard Sybil C you are in for a bit of a treat. Sybil was the first female AA member on the West Coast, she got sober in March of 1941. Sybil carries a no-nonsense message laced with wit and humor, she also shares great insight into the early days and development of AA. Most of the recordings of Sybil are pretty bad, this is the best quality I have heard and it cleaned up really well.

Joe McQ and Charlie P met in 1973, they instantly discovered their mutual fascinations with AA's Big Book. The study they met for regularly became something they presented at meetings, eventually becoming this workshop.

At the AA International Convention in New Orleans in 1980, Wesley P, organized a lunch for 1,500 AA members from all over the world and gave away 100 Joe & Charlie workshop tape sets as door prizes. Invitations exploded, and within a couple of years Joe & Charlie were presenting about 36 seminars a year worldwide.

Tim M is a member of AA and Al-Anon and in this podcast he is speaking as a member of Al-Anon at an event held in Jerusalem in 2018. About a week ago I put up the opening speak from this event and had quite a number of folks email asking to hear the entire event, so here it is.

A couple of things to be aware of, the first recording wasn't too bad but the subsequent recordings were really harsh in their tone and had a loud and nasty hiss. I managed to get out the hiss and mellow the harshness quite a bit, but its not perfect. This event had a translator live so occasionally you will hear chatter in the background, that's the translation. Lastly I put a couple of seconds of click track between the sessions so it wouldn't all blend together...  overall its quite listenable but fyi.

This is also the first long Al-Anon workshop I have uploaded and Im happy to do more if you like, but I dont have any... so if you do and care to share please visit the Sober Cast website and click the upload a speaker link (its under podcasts). This workshop was presented live in Berlin Germany by Texas T, in August of 2023 on the topic of Ego Factors and More, based on the Tiebout Papers (not AA approved literature). In case you are not familiar with Dr Tiebout:

"Dr. Harry M. Tiebout, a psychiatrist, was an early pioneer in coupling the principles and philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous with psychiatric knowledge of alcoholism. A strong supporter of A.A. throughout his life, he consistently worked for acceptance of his views concerning alcoholism the medical and psychiatric professions. He served on the Board of Trustees for A.A. from 1957 to 1966, and was chairman of the National Council on Alcoholism in 1950."

Sybil C had been sober for 39 years at the time of this speak, she is from of Los Angeles and is speaking on the subject of How the Traditions Were Born, a topic she lived while working in the AA office in New York at the time of their creation.

Sybil got sober in 1941 after trying for 17 years, at her first meeting she was asked to wait out in the hall because it was a closed meeting and they thought she was one of the wives, not one of the drunks, she was also the first woman AA member on the East coast. I was a bit shocked at how well this cleaned up considering how it sounded on my first listen. Repost from mid 2022.

I was looking for an Al-Anon meeting and came across this meeting from December of 1978, it is an AA speaker and then an Al-Anon speaker recorded somewhere in Portland Oregon.  It opens with the AA speaker Elle telling her story, then we have Donna telling her Al-Anon story, it turns out she is a triple hitter being an Al-Anon, AA and NA member!

Aug 30th I posted one part of this 4th Step Workshop and had many emails asking for the rest of it, so this is the full 5 part workshop totaling just under 5 hours.

Rick and Bob are the workshop leads, it was held in Mankato Minnesota in 2008, I dont have any other information about this workshop. The audio quality is good but there is some mike noise as each section starts, it doesnt last more than 45 seconds or so. There are some audibility issues as they do Q & A throughout the sessions but the answers make the inaudible questions fairly clear and lastly, I put a brief click track between parts.

Joe McQ and Charlie P met in 1973, they instantly discovered their mutual fascinations with AA's Big Book. The study they met for regularly became something they presented at meetings, eventually becoming this workshop.

At the AA International Convention in New Orleans in 1980, Wesley P, organized a lunch for 1,500 AA members from all over the world and gave away 100 Joe & Charlie workshop tape sets as door prizes. Invitations exploded, and within a couple of years Joe & Charlie were presenting about 36 seminars a year worldwide.

Dick and Peggy M on the topic - Traditions and Relationships, they were very popular circuit speakers in their time speaking as a couple all over the US, they both got sober back in the early 60's and this does feel of that time.

There is a lot of banter at the beginning but they do move into the traditions one at a time from the perspective of what can be applied from them into relationships.  This was a listener request and I have no idea where or when this was recorded, the sound quality feels a little harsh, I cleaned it up as best I could.

If you are in the PNW toward the end of July I just added a Young Peoples Conference (WSCYPAA VII) taking place in Tacoma WA. If you have never been to a Young Peoples event (your age does not matter) the energy and passion of the participants never fails to impress. With Speaker Potluck, just like in a real meeting you dont know what you are going to hear, till you do. I grabbed four 15min speakers without listening to them in advance, then created the audio. You get what you get, enjoy.

AA International Update: All the conference reserved hotels are sold out, over 22,000 people have already registered. Efforts are being made to find additional hotel space, some room is still available in the university dorms (your best deal). I added a hotel zone map to the event listing with a link to a more detailed pdf. At the moment you would be lucky to find a hotel close to the venue for under $600 per night with most well above 1k. This is part three of a five part workshop led by Charlie P along with his wife Katie and also Chris R, they are presenting a workshop on Taking a Newcomer Through the Steps, from the perspective of doing it with a sense of urgency. They do some Q&A at the end of the session and the questions were impossible to hear, I have removed all the dead space and they do a very good job of repeating the question before answering.

This was recorded at the London Ontario Primary Purpose Group in Canada in 2014, someone had emailed me asking about a slightly later version of this workshop, that reminded me I had this on my list to use...so here it is.

The event itself is 8 recordings not 5, the first three are the speakers each telling their stories for about 40 min. I am going to combine those speaks into one episode and upload that the day after the actual workshop concludes, in reality the workshop opened with those.

If you are anywhere near Atlanta Georgia on the weekend of 3/22 the Atlanta Mens Workshop is taking place, its a twice a year event going since 1982. Details: https://scast.us/amw

Chris C (sober in 1987) is conducting a Beginners Workshop in Tempe Az in April of 2005, the first 30 min is Chris sharing followed by the balance of the meeting as Q&A, the questions are difficult to hear but he does an excellent job repeating them back before answering.
