After leaving her previous career in theater, Katie got her CF in both a school setting and a private clinic in Florida. She knew she wanted to experience as many different areas as possible in the field to find her niche, so she sought out work in every setting afterward. She did PRN work at an inpatient rehab hospital, worked at an SNF, worked on the assistive technology team with a school district and with self-contained classrooms at the high school, PRN work in acute care, SLP for elementary students, SLP for self-contained medically fragile classrooms and Autism support classrooms, teletherapy for elementary, middle, and high school students, and on—everything but Home Health. Her therapy areas of interest are working with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Assistive Technology, and Neuro-Cognitive impairments (congenital or acquired), but she loves it all.

Katie currently lives in Knoxville, TN with her husband and two pups, Rosie, and Gracie. She loves hiking, walking/playing with the dogs, digging in the dirt, and planting flowers; just being outside. She hopes to travel again, soon!

About Allison Larson MS, CCC-SLP

Allison Larson MS, CCC-SLP, received her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and went on to Northern Arizona University for her master’s degree.  She has worked in the public schools, private clinics, and a skilled nursing facility.

Her passion is working with adolescents and young adults and helping them transition to the workforce and adult life.  She has worked in a high school setting for 15 years and a post-secondary setting for six years. She loves working on real-world skills, pushing her students to be independent and productive citizens with a good quality of life. She believes that there is dignity in risk and that we need to push our students to let them fly, not hold them back because of our fears. In her view, there should be no readiness model to life. Just go out and try things.

She loves her job, but firmly believes in maintaining a healthy balance between work, family and time for playing and adventure.  She loves traveling with friends and family—her family's goal being to visit every National Park.  They are 57% of the way there.  She has visited 34 of the 59 National Parks!

About Our Guests

Danielle received her master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Washington University in 2000, before continuing her specialized training in neurorehabilitation by becoming certified in Neuro-IFRAH® in 2007 and LSVT BIG® in 2017. She has also completed over 150 hours of advanced training in the Neuro-IFRAH® Approach including instructor training in 2013 with Waleed Al-Oboudi, MOT, OTR, originator of the Neuro-IFRAH® approach. Danielle has experience in the outpatient, inpatient, and acute care settings, working in the outpatient rehabilitation setting with a focus on the treatment of adults affected by stroke or brain injury since 2007. Danielle currently treats private clients in Nashville, TN. In addition, she collaborates with Neuro Therapy Nashville occupational therapist, Trista McClarnon, MS, OTR/L, and peer advisor Marabeth Quin to provide Intensive Therapy sessions to stroke survivors. Danielle has a strong interest in the way mindset influences performance and has assimilated researched based concepts of the benefits of positive expectation into her practice.

Marabeth came to teaching medical professionals through Expanded Practice not by way of a career path, but the path of life experience and love. In 2012, her 18-year-old daughter suffered a massive stroke, paralyzing her right side and leaving her unable to speak or understand language. As the primary caregiver, Marabeth approached her daughter’s recovery with an optimistic mindset and steady belief in her healing potential, personally experiencing the impact these can have on someone’s recovery. Over years of conversations with Danielle, her personal experience combined with Danielle’s clinical reasoning to create new perspectives for overlooked areas of influence in stroke recovery and healing in general. She has functioned in an advisory role for other caretakers in their journey with loved ones who have experienced a stroke, as well as spoken to medical students about the importance of medical staff imparting hope to families.

She worked with kids in both home health and school settings for a period, but pediatrics was not her calling. Her heart lies in adult neurological disorders. In 2017 Angela was recruited by Dr. Janet Whiteside to the UCF Communication Disorders Clinic as an adjunct clinical instructor after a chance encounter at a conference in Tampa. Angela has been deeply touched by aphasia, stroke, head and neck cancer, and brain injury in both her professional life and her personal life as well. She continues to work at both UCF and ORMC, treating patients, and teaching graduate students, and she began her private practice in 2021 to reach families through education and support. Angela has been married to her husband Tim for 17 years and together they have 4 daughters.

(0:00) Introduction

(3:01) Paula’s Background

(10:22) If a student has any learning challenges or is exceptional, they cannot learn more than 1 language

(15:44)  If a child has a language difficulty, then the family should only speak to them in English at home

(16:47) What is Contrastive Analysis

(18:17) Learning more than one language may be too confusing to children and lead to a language delay, decreased cognitive abilities, or academic problems

(25:20) The older someone is, the harder it is to acquire a second language

(31:14) Once students can speak English, they are ready to learn and succeed in a mainstream classroom.

(36:52) It is a sign of a child being lazy if they mix two languages together instead of just using them one at a time.

(41:21) Bilingual children will perfectly use and have equal knowledge of both languages.

(43:33) Who Paula works with

(53:50) What if a listener is interested in learning more about this
