05 Jul 202175: Private Practice SLPs and School SLPs...Let's Unite! with Lexi Smith00:26:12

I know many of you in the schools are working with students that are also seeing children in private practices or outside therapy. There are also a lot of you that want to recommend students to outside therapy because they might not have qualified for school-based therapy.

A lot of questions come up about these types of situations which is why I am so grateful to be joined by Lexi Smith in this episode who owns a private practice called Cascada Resilient Therapy.

We are talking all about how school SLPs and private SLPs can collaborate to set up the best plan of care possible for the child/family.

Lexi Smith, MA, CCC-SLP collaborates with many occupational and physical therapists, play therapists, counselors, nutritionists, doctors, and other care providers. These contacts and her breadth of experience allow her to provide the highest quality and most holistic care possible in order to fulfill her commitment to empower her clients and help them and their families achieve their goals.

Lexi opened Cascada Resilient Therapy in early March 2021. After marketing her tail off, she ended up with a few clients in just two weeks. She gets to dedicate so much more of her effort to personalizing care towards families and doesn’t feel burned out at the end of the day like she used to before owning a private practice!

If you find yourself wondering how you can better collaborate with other SLPs, this interview is a great resource for you.

08 Nov 202193: My Favorite Games For Older Speech Students00:14:23

There’s nothing like a fun game to get students relaxed and engaged in learning!

Do you play games with your speech therapy students?

Playing games in your classroom has many benefits and can really improve social skills as well as executive functioning skills.

When you have older students like those in middle school and high school, it can be harder to come up with game ideas that are interesting enough to get them engaged in your lessons.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing some games that even older speech therapy students will love!

These games are hands-on, unique, and fun. They are great for incorporating into speech therapy lessons so that you can get your students involved in new and interesting ways.

Listen in to hear my favorite games and how I use them to help my speech therapy students perfect their skills and reach their goals faster!

I can’t believe I haven’t talked about this on the podcast yet...

I am talking all about using commercials in speech in today’s episode with a focus on using them to work on inferencing.

Working on inferencing is definitely one of my favorite topics and goals to work on because it allows me to show my students that they can actually be successful!

This is such a hard and tricky skill, so I teach it to my students with materials that are fun and interactive. That is where commercials come in!

02 Aug 202179: Mistakes SLPs Make Working With Older Speech Students00:15:36

Working with older speech students is a challenge. We try our best, but we aren't superheroes, right?

It is a lot different than working with younger students, and sometimes we make mistakes.

In this episode, I am talking all about mistakes that SLPs tend to make when working with older students.

I am sharing the mistakes that I have either made myself or the ones that other SLPs that I know have made.

We will learn from each other and hopefully prevent them from happening in the future by talking through them!

This is the second episode in a whole series that I am doing about working with older speech students, so make sure you listen to the first one too if you missed it. Each one will save you tons of time and stress!

17 Jan 2022103: Helping High Schoolers At Job Sites with Maureen Howard00:23:20

Are your students prepared to join the workforce when they leave speech? As SLP’s, we are always thinking of tools and strategies that students can use when they are in the real world outside of the speech classroom.

One of the most important things we can do is help prepare students with the skills they need to find jobs and learn to be independent. This means teaching them how to communicate with others, teaching them simple tasks that will help them get hired, and taking them out in the world so that they can get practice interacting with others independently.

In today’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Maureen Howard from Spoonful of SPED to talk about how we can work together with special education teachers to give our students the technical and communication skills they need when they graduate out of speech therapy in school.

Maureen is a High School special education department chair dedicated to supporting teachers, families, and students to be successful in high school and beyond!

She has so much experience with high school students and she is sharing her best tips for working on these skills with our older students in a way that is relevant and interesting to them.

Make sure to tune in to hear all about it!

Do you incorporate the curriculum in your sessions?

I get asked this all the time!

In this episode, I am sharing a trick with you that I like to do that makes me feel like I am incorporating the curriculum into my sessions.

This is a shorter episode, but I think you are going to get a lot of value out of hearing how I use curriculum maps to bring in some of the same concepts that our students are learning about in their classrooms.

If you want to feel like the activities you are doing in your speech room are relevant to what your students are focused on in their classrooms, tune in!

14 Dec 202046: Some Teletherapy Tips and About SLP Life Abroad00:33:44

If you think that being an SLP where you live in the United States is interesting and has challenges, then you will love listening to this episode.  My guest, Amanda Blackwell, is here with me to give us a fresh perspective about what it is like to be a speech language pathologist abroad.

After serving for a year as a volunteer speech language pathologist at an orphanage in Guatemala in 2013, Amanda Blackwell lived and worked full-time in the country for over 7 years. Amanda completed a clinical doctorate in speech language pathology and started the official professional association for local Guatemalan speech therapists (SomosTLgt), which has grown to more than 300 members over the past year.

In January 2020, she began working toward a Doctor of Education degree at Murray State University with the goal of opening a university for allied health professions in Guatemala to improve the quality of services across the country.

This was such an interesting episode so be sure to tune in!

31 Aug 202031: Let’s Chat Research Behind COVID and Teletherapy00:32:23

The last six months of COVID have been a real rollercoaster ride, right? Most of us have needed to adapt our lives and work to fit the requirements of a school shutdown or remote work. We quickly learned how to use teletherapy to meet with our speech students and still be as effective as possible.

So, what does the industry research say about teletherapy and the trends we have seen because of COVID? In this episode, I’m excited to dive into the research with Meredith Harold from The Informed SLP. She’ll fill us in on what studies show about teletherapy and COVID in general.*

After listening in, I hope you feel a sense that everything will work out and be okay. The future may still have some surprises for us SLPs, but we are equipped with the skills necessary to help our students succeed.

*Disclaimer: This interview was recorded early summer 2020 before any plans for the 2020-2021 school year were announced.

20 Jun 2022125: Neurodiversity-Affirming Approaches to Social and Emotional Learning with Meg Proctor00:27:25

Have you ever heard of the neurodiversity-affirming approach to therapy?

For many years, we have been taught to teach students how to adapt to the world around them, but what if we approach it differently? The neurodiversity-affirming approach means that you work with autistic kids in a way that doesn’t ask them to fundamentally change who they are.

In today’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Meg Proctor to talk about how you can start offering therapy that is respectful towards the autistic community and doesn’t teach them to be inauthentic to themselves.

Meg offers neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based trainings to OTs and SLPs who want to be more confident, effective, and affirming in their work with autistic kids.

Meg also hosts the podcast Two Sides of the Spectrum, designed to help neurotypical therapists better take the perspective of our autistic clients. Meg’s website, learnplaythrive.com, hosts a variety of free resources as well as CE trainings registered for AOTA and ASHA CEUs.

We have to let go of our neurotypical biases when working with autistic children. By teaching our students in the way that they need to be taught, we can get much better results and more motivation from them.

Tune in to learn more about the neurodiversity-affirming approach to therapy and how you can start utilizing this method in your therapy practice today.

24 Aug 202030: The Journey of an SLP-A and Children’s Book Author00:29:49

Are you interested in the field of speech pathology and the options of becoming a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant or a traveling SLP? Have you ever wanted to write a book but aren’t sure how to fit that goal into your already busy career as an SLP?

If you are looking into either area, then you will really enjoy my conversation with my guest in this episode - Jayah Washington. Jayah has a wealth of knowledge to share with us about her journey as a traveling SLP-A and as a children’s book author.

Jayah Washington is a licensed Traveling Speech Language Pathologist Assistant. After traveling around the country she noticed the lack of diversity in children’s books in the public schools. In October 2018, Jayah self-published her first children’s book and will be attending graduate school this fall for Speech-Language Pathology.

After listening to my conversation with Jayah, I hope that you recognize the broader opportunities that are available in the speech pathology profession. There are many other ways to work in the field outside of a school setting. You will love your career the most if you find the area that works best for you.

07 Mar 2022110: Role of Goals for Autistic Students with Rachel Dorsey00:29:17

Do you write strength-based goals for your autistic students?

The neurodiversity movement is bringing a lot of awareness to the fact that all brains are different. It is increasing our ability to work with our autistic students in a way that makes sense for them and sparks their interest.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, Rachel Dorsey is joining me to talk more about how we can improve our goal setting for our autistic students and approach it in a way that caters to their natural talents while also teaching them new skills.

Rachel Dorsey is a Speech-Language Pathologist, educator, consultant, and autism rights advocate. 13 Jun 2022124: Help Our Students Hear with Madison Levine00:26:16
As SLPs, we work with students with all different backgrounds, and for some, that means hearing difficulties. For many SLPs, this is a challenge because students that need hearing aids have unique needs that we may not always feel qualified to assist with.

On this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Madison Levine, a hearing instrument specialist, to talk about hearing services for our students and how we can take an active role in helping students make the most of their hearing aids.

Madison Levine founded her audiology practice, Levine Hearing, in Charlotte, NC, in 2015. She followed in the footsteps of her mother, who showed her what it looked like to have a successful career and balance a family as well.

Besides feeling unprepared to help with hearing aids, one of the biggest challenges is when students are reluctant to use them. Hearing aids can make things feel uncomfortably loud in a way they aren’t used to and it can be jarring, however, this isn’t something that they can avoid.

The key to working with students like this is trust. Building rapport is the best way to get through to them when they are struggling to come around to their hearing aids. By building a good relationship, you can get through to them and help them understand why their hearing aids are important.

Tune in to learn more about how you can embrace learning about hearing instruments and help your students in the best way possible.

08 Mar 202158: Teach Don’t Test!00:15:11

How would you feel if you were being tested everyday?

You would feel so much pressure! That is how our students would feel if we were always testing them especially because they are testing so often in the classroom.

In this episode, I am talking all about why we should not always be testing our students and why we should be teaching them instead.

This is a shorter episode, but I really think it’s an important one because this concept will really benefit you and your students.

Tune in to hear the benefits of an easy teaching moment, how to model your own thinking and more.

Let’s talk about activities you can do while reading in speech therapy!

This episode of SLP Coffee Talk is part two of my three-part series on literacy-based therapy activities. In the last episode, we talked about different activities you can do before starting a book or text in your speech therapy classroom.  In this episode, we are diving into what to do while they are reading.

There are so many benefits to doing during-reading activities in speech. It allows students to monitor their own comprehension and understanding of the text, and it also allows us to monitor their understanding as well and see what areas they need a little extra help with.

14 Mar 2022111: Using Simon's Cat in Speech00:12:36

A couple of weeks ago, I shared my favorite YouTube channels for using nonfiction during speech therapy sessions. Now, I am sharing my all-time favorite YouTube Channel—Simon’s Cat!

If you aren’t familiar with this channel, it is full of videos that are no more than ten minutes long. They are all black and white and share the stories and adventures of a man and his cat. So why do I love it so much? Because all of the videos are wordless!

If you know me, you know that I absolutely love using these types of resources in my speech therapy classroom. Whether it is wordless picture books or wordless videos, their benefits in a speech therapy setting are endless.

You can use wordless resources for things like body language, facial expressions,  inferencing, predicting, and summarizing—just to name a few. The sky really is the limit! These videos are short, entertaining, and so easy to use in speech therapy.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, join me as I share why I love this YouTube channel so much, more benefits of using wordless resources in speech therapy, and tips and tricks for using these videos in your classroom.

There is so much fun to be had with this YouTube channel, and I am so excited to tell you all about it. I know you’ll love these activity ideas and your students will too.

24 Jan 2022104: Want to Learn More About Embedded Speech in the Classrooms? with Pamela Petralia00:22:51

Have you heard of embedded speech in the classroom?

Embedded speech is basically when a speech therapist is in the classroom working with the teacher, or special education teacher, to reach student goals together. It’s a slightly more unique approach, but the collaboration is highly beneficial to our speech students.

By using this model, you can work together to help your students reach those goals and standards that may have felt unattainable before.

Wondering how it works? This episode of SLP Coffee Talk is for you! Pamela Petralia joined me to talk about what this is and how you can implement it in the classroom in a way that feels collaborative and beneficial for you, the teacher, and your students.

Pam has been a special education teacher for over 20 years and has worked in a variety of settings (self-contained, resource, k-2, middle school, etc.) She is the owner and creator behind Mrs. P's Specialties.

Pam is passionate about helping teachers find ways to engage students in meaningful activities that are tailored to their needs and levels without sacrificing their personal & family time.

28 Feb 2022109: 5 YouTube Channels for Nonfiction00:13:02

Do you use videos in your speech therapy sessions?

A couple of weeks ago, I shared all about why I think you should be using nonfiction in your speech therapy sessions.

I know it is easy to reach for those favorite fiction resources, but studies show that using nonfiction is extremely valuable to students! It builds their background knowledge and improves their comprehension skills as well as their ability to make connections.

It doesn’t have to be a nonfiction text that you use, you can utilize other nonfiction resources too, like videos. Taking the reading aspect out of it makes it much more fun for struggling readers. It allows them to work on listening comprehension and build language skills, which will in turn improve their reading comprehension.

But where do you find quality nonfiction resources? There is a lot of content out there to sort through and it is so important that we ensure the videos we share are appropriate for our needs. Don’t worry, I have you covered! My favorite place to find nonfiction videos is YouTube!

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing with you the best nonfiction YouTube channels that you can turn to when you need videos for your speech therapy sessions!

Tune in to learn more about these YouTube channels and how I use them to target any goal in my speech therapy sessions.

09 Aug 202180: Should I Know Their Reading Level?00:11:33

It can be a challenge to find materials that are both at a lower reading level and include age-appropriate language skills and concepts.

These materials are so important to find and use though because there is evidence that shows that when we work on age-appropriate language skills with our students, we can boost their reading.

If we bring in materials that are too challenging for them, too simple, or not age-appropriate, our students will have a hard time building their confidence and their skills.

To help you with this challenge, I am covering how to know what materials to bring in to help your students in this episode. I am then getting into how to use them once you have them.

This is another episode in a whole series that I am doing about working with older speech students. Each episode provides helpful tips, advice, and information that will save you tons of time and stress! Make sure to tune into them all!

10 Jan 2022102: Working on Character Traits in Speech00:13:10

Do you work on character traits during your speech therapy sessions?

You may be wondering why this is important in speech since students are already working on this in the classroom.

We want the things we are working on in speech to align with what students do in the classroom so that they can keep up with what is expected of them. It isn’t always as easy for our students as it is for other students and that’s where we come in.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing my tips and strategies for helping students understand character traits in my speech therapy sessions. Character trait practice doesn’t have to be hard or complicated, it can be as simple as helping students describe their favorite characters.

11 Oct 202189: Let’s Probe For Those Goals00:15:43

How do you come up with relevant, functional goals for your speech students?

If you are just choosing random goals for your students, you may struggle to see progress.

It can be so discouraging!

When it comes to determining goals that are actually achievable, it is important to look at the students and evaluate their needs before setting those goals.

There are several things you want to consider when it comes to each individual student, but how do you know what to look at? In this episode of SLP Coffee talk, I am sharing my favorite tools that you can use to evaluate your students where they are and determine what goals you want to accomplish for the school year.

Setting the right goals can make all of the difference in speech therapy. If you choose the wrong ones, students will be frustrated and discouraged. It could lead to feelings of failure from both you and your students.

Tune in to learn how to set the best goals to help your students reach their highest potential.

27 Jul 202026: Incorporating Curriculum Verbs into Speech Therapy00:57:39

There’s SO MUCH curriculum for students to master in class, and it is imperative that speech sessions continue that learning when possible.  When I was introduced to the work of Cathy Alexander, I was blown away by her knowledge of grade-level curriculum, and I’m sure you will be too.

Cathy Alexander has been a speech pathologist for over 25 years working in public schools and private pediatric clinics. She is an international speaker on the subject of vocabulary and the author of Core Curriculum Articulation - S, R, L, and the WH Question Blast Off Board Game.

Grab a notebook and pen for this episode and let Cathy teach you how she incorporates the curriculum vocabulary - particularly verbs- into her speech sessions.

16 May 2022120: We Are Not A Reading Teacher00:11:58

How are SLPs different than reading teachers?

This is a question I see a lot in my SLP Elevate membership. People want to know how we can differentiate ourselves from a standard reading teacher and show our value without just doing the same thing over and over. Some even wonder why students even come to us for things like this.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I want to really dive into this question. I want to share how we as SLPs are, in fact, very different from reading teachers, and how we can differentiate our instruction.

Yes, our students are working on things like the main idea, summarizing, inferencing, and answering questions in their regular classroom. What you have to remember is that decoding times language comprehension equals reading comprehension. A student can’t be an effective reader if they do not have adequate language skills, and that is where we fit into the puzzle.

We are the ones that focus on that integral piece of education. We work on sentence structure, categorization, syntax, vocabulary, auditory memory, and so much more. We are the ones going deep into those skills and strategies that our students really need to succeed.

Make sure to tune in today to hear my best tips for differentiating your lessons to highlight your unique position in your students' educational experience.

09 May 2022119: Collaborating with Your Sped with Ashley Lutz00:24:48
Let’s talk about special education!

As SLPs, many of us work closely with special education teachers. Collaboration is an important part of helping students reach their goals. Sometimes that’s easier said than done though. There is a lot that goes into each role, and it can be easy to lose sight of that and get frustrated when things don’t go as planned.

The key is to come up with a strategy that works for you and your SPED teacher. In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with a special education teacher, Ashley Lutz, to talk about things like working collaboratively, how SPED views speech therapy, and so much more.

Ashley has been working in Special Education for 10 years. She was a middle school self-contained teacher for 8 years working with students with intellectual disabilities. She just began her third year as a special education inclusion teacher in an elementary setting.

If you are ready to ditch the overwhelm and frustration when it comes to collaborating with the SPED teacher and focusing on your students' needs, you don’t want to miss this episode because Ashley is sharing her top tips for making that happen.

06 Jun 2022123: Ways to Diversify the Field, Implicit Bias, & Barriers with DiverCity SLP00:34:21
There is an unfortunate lack of diversity within the speech-language pathology profession.

With it being a predominantly white profession, that means that a large majority of SLP materials lack diversity as well. In today’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Christina Royster and Courtney Overton from DiveryCity SLP to discuss the things that they are doing to increase diversity and representation within the field so that all children feel included.

In 2018, Ana-Maria Jaramillo, Courtney Overton, and Christina Royster created DiverCity SLP in order to increase diversity in the field of speech-language pathology. DiverCity SLP presents at local high schools with a high enrollment of underrepresented communities.

They speak with students about the need for more speech-language pathologists of color. Since the pandemic, DiverCity SLP has evolved to include workshops and seminars on a national level. Topics include anti-racist practices, appropriate evaluations and treatment techniques for diverse populations, culturally and linguistically sustaining approaches, and high school career outreach programs.

Just because the profession lacks diversity now doesn’t mean that it has to stay that way! There are tools, resources, and other things you can do within your SLP practice that will improve the inclusivity of your lessons.

Tune in to hear more about dynamic assessments, the importance of understanding your students’ culture, where to find resources that are more representative of all people and cultures, and so much more.

05 Oct 202036: Tips for General Ed Teachers - Always Fun with a Teacher’s Point of View00:24:28

Have you ever wanted to get the view from a general education teacher on how SLPs and other special service providers in the school can support them? Me too. It’s always a good idea to bring the two groups together so you can work as a team.

In this episode, we are lucky enough to get a fresh perspective from my first guest that is NOT an SLP or special educator, Gretchen Bridgers from Always a Lesson.

Gretchen is a general education teacher of 8 years and was a Teacher of the Year runner-up two years in a row. With years of mentoring new teachers, providing professional development to school building staff, and speaking nationally at conferences and in-services, Gretchen has now invested her time solely to consulting individual teachers and school staff.

I hope you are excited about this opportunity to hear from a teacher’s perspective. I know I am! It’s a great reminder to chat with the general education teachers you work with more often to find out how you can best support each other.

25 Oct 202191: How and Why We Should Work On Main Idea In Speech00:14:15

Have you ever wondered why we are working on reading comprehension or the main idea in speech?

It is something that many SLPs ask because it seems like it should be taught in the regular classroom, not in our therapy sessions.

The truth is that the skills needed to understand the main idea and reading comprehension all fall into our domain. Teachers may work on it in the classroom, but we can teach these skills with a language lens.

Students have to understand what they are reading, filter out the unimportant information, hold it in their memory, and verbally express what it’s all about. We can focus on breaking it down into pieces to help them grasp the concept.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing my strategies for focusing on the main idea in speech therapy. This will help students understand this concept, and by extension, develop language skills further.

We have a unique ability to look at the bigger picture for each student and understand why they might be struggling with this concept. Tune in to hear my tips on how to evaluate your students, when to work on the main idea, and tools and strategies to use in the classroom.

14 Jun 202172: SLPs Role with Executive Functioning with Kate Melillo00:37:30

What does executive functioning have to do with speech-language pathology?

SLPs are able to work on many skills under the executive function umbrella including task initiation, focus, time management, working memory, task completion, organization, self-regulation, and more.

Although it is a newer topic in our field, we are able to work with students with executive functioning challenges to accomplish various tasks and achieve goals. Kate Melillo is joining me in this episode to break all of this down!

Kate obtained her Master of Education degree in Communication Disorders with a focus on pragmatic language. Prior to earning this degree, Kate spent time as a pragmatic skills researcher, helping to design web-based programs and resources for neurodiverse individuals to learn different types of pragmatic skills, workplace skills, and transition skills. She was also a preschool and kindergarten teacher in the US and abroad. Kate has worked in the clinical speech and language field with a wide range of children from infancy to young adulthood, as well as older adults.

Kate’s passion is teaching her students and families about navigating the social world using a neurodiverse perspective. In a fast-paced world of social media and screens, she believes that now more than ever families can use every opportunity necessary to connect face-to-face in a way that they choose.

We cover various examples of executive functioning challenges, why SLPs teach self-advocacy and pragmatic skills rather than just social skills, how assessment is handled for executive functioning challenges, the importance of teaching students self-advocacy and so much more!

If you are interested in how you can help your students (especially the older ones) with their executive functioning skills, tune in!

11 Jul 2022128: What Is Gestalt Language Processing (And How Does It Look for the Older Students)?! with Alexandria Zachos00:30:53

Have you heard of Gestalt Language Processing?

This is something that many SLPs don’t actually know a lot about but understanding it can make a huge impact on your students.  We have always been told to redirect echolalia, but kids that communicate that way are gestalt language processors, and it’s important to understand how to help them.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Alexandria Zachos to talk about gestalt language processing and how you can incorporate this knowledge into your therapy practice.

Alexandria is a licensed speech-language pathologist in the state of Illinois and has been practicing since 2003.  Over the past eighteen years, she has provided therapy for all ages in a variety of clinical settings, including public schools, home therapy, acute care, rehabilitation hospitals, and outpatient clinics.

Tune in to learn more about what gestalt language processing is, therapy activities you can do with these students, how to collect data during these types of lessons, and so much more!

23 Nov 202043: Breaking Down Cultural Responsiveness...SLP Style00:25:35

As SLPs, it is our primary goal to support our students and help facilitate their growth and success. One important way that we can do that which is especially relevant today is by being culturally responsive. It is important that we see, appreciate, and support the cultural differences of our students in a positive way.

Today, I’m so thrilled to chat with Jordyn Carroll who is an SLP that specializes in cultural responsiveness.

Jordyn is a school-based speech-language pathologist in Washington, D.C. She specializes in culturally responsive therapy and child language development. Jordyn emphasizes the importance of being the person you needed when you were younger. She creates products and materials with the intention of serving as representation both in and outside the field of speech-language pathology.

If you’ve been worried about how to be more culturally responsive with your students, I hope my interview with Jordyn has shown you the importance of starting where you are at and making small improvements. Together we can make a difference in the lives of our students.

02 May 2022118: From Surviving to Thriving as an SLP with Barbara Fernandes00:27:22

Do you use gaming and technology in speech therapy?

One of the keys to getting students more engaged in their speech therapy sessions is utilizing their interests, and for many kids, that’s gaming and technology. A lot of SLPs are wary about incorporating those though because they don’t want to give children too much screen time. However, there is a difference between playing games or watching YouTube and participating in speech therapy on a screen.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Barbara Fernandes to talk about her app, Speech & Language Academy, and why it is so beneficial in the speech classroom.

Barbara Fernandes, founder, and CEO of Smarty Ears is well known for her innovative and breakthrough product development for speech and communication disorders. For over a decade, Barbara has translated science into user-friendly and powerful technology to support individuals with communication disorders. Barbara transformed an entire industry to adopt mobile technologies through the design and development of over sixty mobile applications and an entire symbol library: Smarty Symbols.

As the founder of Smarty Symbols, Barbara also created the most inclusive, diverse, and comprehensive symbol library and developed a powerful new technology that is disrupting the special education field by providing a platform for custom visual support creation. Smarty Symbols has been adopted as the symbol of choice in many other technologies developed in the field.

Make sure to tune in to learn more about her app, how it works, and why you should start using it in your therapy practice today.

Do you ever struggle with imposter syndrome?

Many SLPs, myself included, struggle with this feeling of not being good enough. That’s okay though! No one feels like they have it together all the time. It’s important that you self-reflect and remember those times when you knew you did an amazing job. This is the key to powering through those moments of doubt.

Today’s guest on SLP Coffee Talk is Dani Newcombe, and she is such an inspiring SLP to talk to. She has had her fair share of imposter syndrome moments and self-doubt, but she is the master at finding the humor and moments of joy, no matter the circumstance.

Dani Newcombe is a school and private practice SLP in Indiana. She graduated from Loma Linda University in 2018. She is currently on year 4 as an SLP. She owns her own practice, The Messy SLP, LLC,  and you can find her posting videos for comedic relief on Instagram.

It’s okay to not love what you do 100% of the time, and Dani isn’t afraid to talk about the hard parts along with the joyous parts.

Tune in to hear more as we explore staying connected as SLP’s, perfectionism, dealing with feelings of overwhelm, and finding the humor in it all!

15 Jun 202020: The Behavior Challenge00:28:35

Do you struggle to create lessons for your students with more challenging behaviors? It can be hard to follow a typical plan when the needs of each student are unique. What works for one might not work for the other.

In this episode, I’m excited to chat with Sasha Long of The Autism Helper to learn why we should embrace a level of uncertainty in our instruction.

Sasha is a sport certified behavior analyst and former special education teacher. She travels internationally as a speaker and consultant providing individualized training and feedback to parents, educators, therapists, and administrators in the world of autism.

04 Apr 2022114: Literacy-Based Therapy Part 1: Before Reading Activities00:14:08
If you know me, you know that I love incorporating books and literacy-based activities into my speech therapy sessions!

It allows me to plan easily, quickly, and effectively. I can use one resource with as many groups as possible or even with mixed groups with many different goals. It also allows me to correlate what we do in speech therapy with what they are doing in their classrooms. This means I can mimic their classroom lessons and teach them how to use the strategies that we worked on in the speech room to improve their outcomes.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am talking all about before-reading activities. Why before reading? In order to incorporate reading lessons they may be doing in the classroom, we need to focus on before, during, and after reading activities.

This means you are doing a whole lesson before even starting a book or article! Doing this gives your students a better chance to grasp the text and understand the lessons.

Make sure to tune in to this episode to learn a ton of different before reading ideas, strategies, activities, and tools you can use in your speech therapy sessions.

This episode is the first part in a three-part series where I will be sharing activities you can do for each part of the process, so make sure to tune in next week to learn more about during reading activities!

22 Nov 202195: What Does Background Knowledge Have To Do With It?00:12:22

Having background knowledge on a topic gives us a significant advantage in mastering unfamiliar tasks.

This applies to speech as well. Studies show that when students read, they have greater comprehension if they have background knowledge on the topic. They are better able to use context clues and thus, achieve greater success with comprehension and vocabulary.

So how do we target that in our speech practice?

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing more information on why you should target background knowledge in speech, how to assess your students, and ways to improve their background knowledge on a given topic.

You’ll want to start by assessing what your students already know about the topic you are covering. After that, you can help them gain the knowledge they are lacking with online tools, books, YouTube videos, and more.

Make sure to tune in for all of the details so you can begin implementing them today.

Have you ever struggled to diagnose an English language learner because you aren’t sure if it’s a difference or a disorder?

Many SLPs struggle with this because we don’t want to be wrong about a diagnosis just because our student is learning the English language. The most effective way for us to really understand our ELLs is to use dynamic assessments and language sampling instead of standardized tests.

In today’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Nia Thomas to talk about how you can use dynamic assessments to determine if your students really have a speech disorder or if it’s just a difference.

Nia Thomas is a school-based bilingual speech-language pathologist, educator, and storyteller from NYC. She graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Disorders and Black Studies. She went on to obtain her Master’s in Science from Teacher’s College, Columbia University.

A two-time Writing Our Lives alumni, Nia has written for Bustle, Remezcla, Fierce by Mitú, ASHA Leader Live, and other online publications. She is also the founder and editor of Bilingual Speech Resources.

Tune in to learn about why dynamic assessments and language samples are so much more effective with ELL students, tools and resources you can use, and so much more.

12 Jul 202176: Social Skills Through Books?! with Kimberley Delude00:28:05

How do you help your students with their social skills?

My guest, Kimberly Delude, and I are talking all about social skills and how to work on social skills through books in this episode. She is the perfect person to be talking to about this because she actually wrote her own books to help promote language growth and social skills.

Kimberly Delude is a Speech Pathologist in public schools. By day she enjoys helping her students find their voices, while at night she writes. She is the author of two popular series: Freddie the Fly and Fairy Tales 2.0. The former is a series that helps kids learn a variety of social skills through fun lessons that don't feel like learning. The latter is a series of books for at-home practice that parents can easily employ.

We are getting into how to use a book in general in a speech session from start to finish, how to get a better understanding of the things we don’t see, why practice and collaboration are so important for carryover, and more.

Kimberly is sharing endless ideas, insight, and inspiration on incorporating books to work on social skills, and she is also giving away one of her books! Listen to this episode to learn all about this topic and also to find out how to win!

20 Dec 202199: Why I Avoid Vocabulary Lists00:10:19

How do we decide what vocabulary words to work on in speech therapy?

This is probably the number one question I see asked in SLP Facebook groups, so I wanted to take some time to explain why I don’t rely on vocabulary lists, grade level lists, or classroom curriculum, and explain what I use instead.

The truth is that vocabulary lists and grade level lists aren’t perfect. They don’t account for where each individual student might be in the vocabulary learning process.

Instead, we need to focus on teaching our students how to determine the meaning of words they come across on their own, without relying on basic vocabulary memorization.

Make sure to tune in to hear my strategy for helping students grasp those tier 2 vocabulary words and why you should consider using them in your speech therapy practice too.

14 Feb 2022107: Using Nonfiction Texts00:11:13
Are you using nonfiction texts in speech?

I know as speech-language pathologists, we love our storybooks. It’s so easy to reach for a comforting story for any activity in the classroom. However, there is a ton of evidence to back up the idea that nonfiction texts are more beneficial to our speech therapy students than fiction texts are.

One of the main reasons they are more beneficial is that they provide background knowledge. Our students may really struggle in this area. Using nonfiction texts will help you work towards those important speech therapy goals while also providing your students with the background knowledge they really need.

This will in turn help them answer higher-level thinking questions in the classroom and help develop their reading skills and reading comprehension.

In other words, you are setting them up for success as they read nonfiction more and more in their regular classrooms!

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk,  I am sharing more about why I love using nonfiction texts in speech therapy so much, the tools and resources I use in my therapy sessions, as well as some tips for what goals you can work on using nonfiction texts.

Make sure to tune in to hear all of the juicy details so you can get started today!

26 Apr 202165: Instead of Vocabulary Word Lists…00:15:02

Do you have students on your caseload that struggle with their vocabulary?

In this episode, I am discussing how I help my students strengthen their vocabulary.

I like to do this by focusing on strategies instead of specific words because I believe that they don't need to learn specific vocabulary words. They need to learn what to do when an unknown word comes their way.

I am giving you some actionable tips and advice as well as resources and materials to use so you can easily create more teachable moments.

If you want to help your students improve their vocabulary, this is the episode for you.

25 Jul 2022SLPs and Selective Mutism with Joleen Fernald00:31:25

Selective mutism is a topic that I know many SLPs have lots of questions about, and I haven’t had the right answers. Luckily, in this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I have special guest Joleen Fernald on to talk about everything you need to know about selective mutism.

Joleen R. Fernald, Ph.D., CCC-SLP was awarded Board Specialty Recognition in Child Language from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dr. Fernald follows Greenspan and Wieder’s model, DIRFloortime®, when working with children and families.

She has a special interest in the social-emotional development of young children and its impact on their speech and language skills. As a speech-language pathologist, Dr. Fernald works with children who have a variety of communication disorders.

Since selective mutism is an anxiety-based disorder, it can be confusing for SLPs to understand our role in helping students, but it's important to remember that this affects their social communication and we are the experts in that.

Tune in to learn more about what selective mutism is, what causes it, and how we can best support and help our students with this condition.

01 Aug 2022So How Do We Decide What Goals To Work on?00:14:07

How do you decide what goals to work on during therapy sessions?

I am often asked about what goals to work on based on the results of the standardized tests that we are given. However, I actually don’t like to base my goals on those results.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing how I actually decide on goals for my speech therapy students.

We all know that we have to generate an IEP and deal with the higher-ups and funding so we do need those standardized tests to justify our services. However, if we make our goals based on what they did wrong on the tests, we will be working on the same things for years and years.

We are here to work on tasks that are similar to those assessments, but we need to work on more than just those tasks. The things they do on those tests are not what they are going to need to do in society.

When determining goals, the best thing you can do is get as much information on the student as possible. Tune in to learn how I conduct assessments in my speech therapy practice and how I use them to pick the right goals for my students.

08 Aug 2022It Is a Brand New School Year: Let’s Set Ourselves up for Success00:20:38

Are you ready for a brand new school year?

I know many of us are still in summer mode right now but there are also many that are headed back to school, so in this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I’m sharing my best tips for setting yourself up for success this year.

I hope that you had some time to relax and reenergize this summer. It is so important that you are able to rest so that you can start refreshed and ready to go come fall.

I have found that the more I do during the first week of school, the more successful the year is. I feel less overwhelmed and more prepared when things get chaotic.

There are some things that I do every year that help me get going and be more prepared. It doesn’t have to be fancy or elaborate to be effective. It’s about using your time wisely now while things are calm so that you can prepare yourself for when you don’t have the extra time.

Tune in to hear how I organize my data binder, spreadsheets, and calendar for a more successful school year.

15 Aug 2022How To Plan For Your Speech Sessions In Minutes00:20:02

Are you ready to cut your planning time down drastically?

In this week’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing how you can plan your speech therapy sessions in minutes. Yes, you read that right! Not weeks, not hours—minutes. This is my framework for planning my speech therapy sessions in minutes, and sometimes even seconds.

Planning for each individual student on your caseload would take hours, which no one wants to do. If you have been following me for a while, you know that no matter what goal I am working on in the classroom, I like to plan my lessons around a theme or concept to make planning easier.

We only have so much time to get our lesson planning done for our students. We have to work smarter and not harder when it comes to lesson planning for all of those kids. Using themes is just one of the ways I do that.

Tune in to this episode to learn how to get your time back and get your lesson planning done in a few minutes, no matter the size of your caseload.

22 Aug 2022Listening to Autistic Voices with Katja Piscitelli00:14:54

Are you familiar with neurodiversity-affirming teaching methods?

Every day, I see so many questions from other SLPs on this topic, so today on SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Katja Piscitelli to talk about these methods so that you can get all of your questions answered and start the year off confident with autistic students on your caseload.

Katja Piscitelli is a speech therapist, dog mom, and Disney lover. She supports autistic students and their families through neurodiversity-affirming, child-led therapy. She also specializes in supporting gestalt language development (echolalia).

Katja believes in listening to the communities we serve to guide our practice, and she loves sharing what she learns from the Autistic community and her experiences with students with all of you!

There is a shift happening in the way we teach autistic students in speech therapy. Instead of teaching them to be more like us, we are learning to teach them differently in a way that affirms who they are and how their brains work.

Katja has a wealth of knowledge and tips to share on this topic. Tune in to learn more about why listening to autistic voices is so important, tips for teaching self-advocacy and perspective taking, the top tips and tools for working with autistic students, and so much more.

29 Aug 2022Using Bloom's Taxonomy To Know Where to Start00:14:36

Do you struggle to figure out where to go with your older speech students?

If you’ve been following me for a while, you may have heard me talk about how language comprehension is such an integral part of learning and reading. In order to be successful readers, our students need good decoding skills.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I’m sharing why I use Bloom’s Taxonomy to determine what to do with my older speech therapy students. They have to be able to engage with the text, think about it, and answer questions, and we as SLPs can help them get there.

It’s so important that we determine a goal that is appropriate for our students, not just what they’re working on in the classroom. Thinking differently about how we determine the goal we're working on with our students can really help us feel confident about what we are working on and know that we can make a true difference.

Tune in to learn more about how I use Bloom’s Taxonomy to determine what my students need help with so that I can meet them where they are at and help them achieve their goals.
