Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'Deaepisode 109 Steph's Publishing Storiessee all podcast notes at stephanieodea.com/podcastnotes In this episode I share my publishing stories. Each book I've written has a slightly different story -- but the fact is that it wasn't something that just "happened" --- I've had the idea that I was a writer who wanted to write books since childhood. When I was in my very early twenties I began querying literary agents and it took close to 5 years of "NOs" before I got my first YES. And then I got fired from that publisher. Listen in as I share the formula and path that I took to find my first literary agent, how I kept going even when it seemed like it wouldn't ever work and how even though I THINK I'm pretty smart, I still fell for a scam. I also share the exact numbers I've gotten for advances, because I know a few of you were wondering. I didn’t think I was going to record the morning that I did — but felt compelled to do so. I got up early in the morning to do my thing, but read a headline that a blogger I once knew and followed a million years ago (15 years ago, but who’s counting…) had died. and it shook me. So I began recording. Listen in as I share my thoughts, process my feelings in real-time, and share my key take-aways on the way writing online has shifted and morphed throughout the years and why it’s still something that I do, and am proud of. Heather Armstrong, the blogger I’m discussing, took her own life. I do not go into detail, but if you can already tell that this isn’t something you want to know anything about — don’t listen. Within this episode I write about how I got started blogging, how deciding on purpose to start a website and stick to it (with my rudimentary business plan!) changed the trajectory of my life forever and how proud I am of the boundaries I put in place from the very beginning. I read an excerpt from The Mommy Blogger Next Door: AKA How I Became the CrockPot Lady and also share a few other episodes that may be of interest. episode 16: matching your identity with integrity episode 33: dealing with childhood trauma episode 34: interview with Sandy Cooper episode 44: ignoring influencers episode 58: sober curious episode 79: imperfect parenting OverviewI love helping listeners embark upon their own journey to Slow Down, and live the life they’ve always dreamt about: one filled with peace, purpose, and abundance. 11 Mar 2024 | Financial Literacy | 00:41:01
Today we are talking about money! But probably not in the way you are thinking. We are talking all about financial literacy. I am sharing my life's story and how I became financially literate. What is financial literacy? It is the ability to understand and use financial skills to make informed and effective decisions about money. I grew up in a very frugal home. My parents and grandparents taught me so many life lessons around this. However, early in my marriage my husband and I started playing around with credit cards and quickly found ourselves in debt. It was not until after the birth of our first child that we realized that this was not the best life choice. So, we stopped and started educating ourselves in our finances. We started reading book and watching shows to learn anything we could on how to be smart in our spending. And I am sharing it all with you today! In episode #24 we discussed labels — and how I’m not a fan of them. Deciding on purpose to really pay attention to how much alcohol (or food or social media) you are consuming does not mean you are an alcoholic. (Or that you have an eating disorder or are addicted to social media.) I’d like you instead to take off the label and keep an open mind and just EXPLORE. Be Curious. If something is not actively HELPING you move forward in your life and help you achieve your dream life, explore why you are continuing with it. Step 1 in living a Slow Life is to Declutter all that is not working. In this episode I also talk about the difference between Start Goals and Stop Goals and how to make them a daily habit. BUY THE SLOW LIVING BOOK HERE! The definition of disappointment is when your expectations don't meet the reality and this happens a lot of the time. Many times it happens when we have reached our capacity limit. Day to day your capacity can change, depending on many variables that you can't control. You are not a computer or a cell phone -- you're a human and "recharging" your battery isn't always super simple. Within this episode we talk about what you can do to recharge yourself and how to protect your boundaries from others who may be draining. I also talk about a "Bucket Filling" book that my children read in school -- and one that is a great metaphor for life. At the end of the day, you can really only rely on and control yourself. Erin and I have been friends for over 15 years, and in this episode she shares how she turned her simple idea into an online empire. And she did it all (in the beginning) with absolutely no-money down. The past few episodes have been talking about The American Dream -- and whether or not it's dead or still alive and kicking. Things have definitely changed --- no one is going to argue that inflation isn't happening or the economy hasn't shifted. Remember, step 5 of living a Slow Life is to tweak and fine-tune --- but I don't want you to ever give up on your dreams. Listen as Erin and I talk about the beginning of getting our websites off of the ground, working with our literary agent (she and I had the same one for a little bit) and how she, ALSO, emailed the Rachael Ray show and ended up on it. Probably, right? It’s certainly a great way to shame kids and people and get them to stay in their lane. Today on the podcast we are going to flip it. If you are a mom, you most certainly ARE the center of the universe in your household. And you need to be protected and cherished and nourished and treat yourself as the valuable and irreplaceable being of which you are. Listen in as I share the thought shift that needs to happen in order for you to decide once and for all that you are IN CHARGE. And you need to protect yourself so you can do your Being In Charge properly. This isn’t a woe-is-me, I’m going to embrace martyrdom because no one else can possibly do it as good as I can — NO. When you are in charge, you most certainly can delegate!! 😉 But you need to take care of yourself — all of your wants and needs FIRST. You are the center. you are the nucleus. BUT — that doesn’t mean I want you to not collect or pay attention to data. When you are trying to better yourself or your life situation in some way, you do have to keep track and pay attention to what’s happening. It’s not going to be helpful to never step on a scale if you are trying to lose a bit of weight and it won’t be advantageous if you never look at your bank statement if you are trying to improve your financial situation. Collect the data. But try to separate your feelings from the data. Data is just data. It doesn’t mean that you are good or bad or smart or stupid. It’s inanimate information. You need to work to keep your thoughts and feeling and emotions separate from the data — and that’s what this episode is all about. Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'DeaEpisode 60 - 4 More Yearssee all podcast notes at stephanieodea.com/podcastnotes 4 More Years. I recorded this a week or so ago — and the theme is about paying attention to where you are right now — and if what you are doing will be “good enough” to do for the Next 4 Years. are you on the right path? is what you are doing sustainable for another 4 years? are you happy? do you feel satisfied? I recorded this with the mindset that I am 4 years away from turning 50 — so I started asking myself these questions — can I do what I’m doing now, and not feel burnt out, not feel taken for granted, not feel overworked and under-appreciated for another 4 Years? is that a possibility? What about for YOU? if you keep going the way you’re going with your heath, your finances, your relationships — will it look okay and BE OKAY in another 4 years? If not, why not? what needs to change? take a listen and LMK your thoughts — only you know what rings true for you and in your own life. Go slow. Take the time to really ponder these questions as you move through your day/week/end of the month. 18 Apr 2022 | Mindset Is Everything | 00:26:15
Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'DeaEpisode 28 - Mindset Is EverythingToday, we are going to talk MINDSET. This word gets thrown around an awful lot — and I have a lot of thoughts on what it means, what it doesn’t, and how to slowly and carefully massage your mindset into one that works well for you — in whatever phase of life you might be currently in. In a nutshell — mindset is about staying in the here and now and paying attention, without judgment, to what your brain is saying. You have a constant dialogue – when you are driving, when you are trying to fall asleep – And a lot of times you aren’t paying attention to what your thoughts and mental chatter say – And I’m suggesting that in order to live out the life of your dreams – the kind of life you want to live on purpose – You should try your hardest to pay attention to your thoughts the very best that you can. Mindfulness is a psychological process that allows you to pay attention to experiences as they happen without judgment. It’s simple: It’s about fully attending to what’s happening, to what you’re doing, and where you are. Mindfulness plays a huge part in emotional stability because it represents one single factor: It allows you to be not overly reactive to the negative situations happening in your life. The reason we do a 3 Year Plan is because when you are trying to completely transform your life — 1 year isn’t enough. Many people make 5 Year Plans — and that is fantastic when you are young and you know that you’ll graduate from this or that in this time frame or you’ll do a great big huge life event like getting married or having a baby. But when you’re a grown-up for a while — 5 years kind of gets blurry. And it feels “far away” so you have “time” to do the things — so you kind of shove them aside. resources that may be of help to you: Making and Keeping New Year’s Resolutions Listening to the Podcast is self-care!! Feeling a bit sad. A bit down. Thinking that somehow THIS year would be different than the last two because the pandemic is essentially “over” — but now that the year is coming to the end, the women I chatted with realized that they are still in the same place. Is this you, too? And it’s tricky, because somehow we are all just sort of programmed to think that when we get through This or That or the Other busy season or tough situation things will be better. Easier. Simpler. But nothing will change unless you MAKE IT CHANGE. and depending on your mood — that either sounds empowering or debilitating. Listen in as I share my thoughts and advice on deciding to make things happen and taking action even when you’d rather someone else do it for you. Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'DeaEpisode 22 - Success Secrets Part 2The second episode in a 3-episode series of Success Secrets based upon Brian Tracy's 21 Success Secrets of Self-Made Millionaires. These ‘success secrets’ have been percolating in my brain for the past 20 years or so — I’ve read an awful lot of Self-Help and Personal Development books (hundreds!!) and always felt a bit bummed — they never felt like they were speaking *to me* — they were either for women who were really interested in all things homemaking and couponing and entertaining or they seemed geared towards business men. and while I *do* have aspects of myself that likes things clean and tidy — I am not a Martha Stewart-type. I just don’t seem to care all that much! 😉 and while I *do* have my own business, I’m not all that business-y! Today's episode came to me in the middle of the night (yes literally!) and I had to share it with you. I want to talk about diet culture and some of the pressures that you can have from society around diets. The number one thing I want you to take away from this episode is the need for self love! The love you have for yourself needs to be complete and total unconditional love. Even though the scale might not be the number you want or your favorite pair of pants don't fit like they use to, the most important thing to remember is to love yourself unconditionally. In my coaching, I talk about health at every size with my clients. Because health is not just the number on the scale, it is also how you feel inside. Are you able to take your dog on a walk? Are you able to play with your kids or grandkids? Health is about so much more than the physical appearance. When it comes to food, I don't cancel anything out. I believe in balance and lifiving life! However, I do have an acronym for "DIET" that I use every day - Do I Eat This? I ask myself how will it make me feel? This is something that has helped me in my personal journey! Do you want more episodes to review for more self love? Because of this, many medical professionals are hesitant to call adrenal fatigue a “real” issue. SO. Gibson wrote the book "Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents" where she talks about the four types of difficult parents. I am sharing with you more detail on these parenting types and how they can lead to estrangement in the adult childhood years.
There are many ways to prevent them from becoming estranged, one of the most simple is having good communication. Say your sorry, show humility, and really work on yourself! Learn more about the four types of parents from Lindsay C. Gibson in her book, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents. Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'DeaEpisode 42 - Listening to The Universesee all Slow Living Podcast notes, here. In today’s episode I go back in time and talk about who I was and where I was BEFORE 2008 — in 2008 I made a New Year’s Resolution to use my slow cooker every day and write about it online. But I had dreams and goals and visions that started from a very (very!) early age and in this episode I share how I initially programmed my GPS and how I listened to nudges and inklings from within and from God or The Universe to figure out my next steps. I hope you enjoy this episode — and AS ALWAYS — if you have any questions or comments, shoot me an email or tag me @stephanieodea on Instagram or Facebook or record a voicemail question.

OverviewI love helping listeners embark upon their own journey to Slow Down, and live the life they’ve always dreamt about: one filled with peace, purpose, and abundance. I understand how you’re feeling when you are rushing around trying to do “all the things,” always playing catch up and finding time to get things done. I know because I’m a mom too. Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'DeaEpisode 68 - Believing in Miraclessee all podcast notes at stephanieodea.com/podcastnotes Let’s talk MIRACLES today. sometimes, as life goes on, the idea of believing in miracles gets sort of shoved aside as “fanciful thinking” — and while I do not believe that you should sit around and daydream all day — not knowing all the HOWS is okay. Remember —
if we are lucky, life is long — but enjoying the here and the now is what makes life worth living — and it’s okay to dream. It’s okay to think up wild ideas.
and it’s ALSO OKAY to not know how they might “come true.” Suspend your disbelief for a while. Make a list of lots of fun things you’d like to do — and shelve your inner skeptic who thinks they might be too far-fetched or unrealistic. Have fun. Play. Believe. The easiest thing to do is to stay away from anyone who you believe is poisonous to you or to your well-being. that’s a no brainer. The problem is, that in a well-functioning society (or a family/extended family, or in a work place (which really is just a mini-society)) — sometimes you just can’t stay away. This is REAL LIFE. and in real life sometimes you just need to (unfortunately) do things you don’t want to do and interact with people you don’t want to. The newest episode of the Slow Living podcast is out and in this episode I answer a question from a listener on how to “deal with” people in your life that aren’t all that good for you. I explain the “grey rock” approach and how to put yourself into a “hamster ball” — we also talk about how to separate the Behavior from the Person — and what to do when the Behavior is no longer matching the Person because of dementia or another debilitating life event. I also share the name of my favorite book about dealing with Narcistic people. If you’ve been following along for the past 48 weeks, you know that living a SLOW LIFE doesn’t mean that you are lazing around the house eating bon-bons and watching life pass you by. No. Being Intentionally Slow means that you are taking the time to cull the things from your day-to-day life that no longer serve you and you are Making a PLAN to do the things that you WANT to do — and you’re not just doing the things that you Have to do or the things that you think you “SHOULD” be doing — and when you do these things — the WANT-TO-DOs — it feels pretty darn good. but sometimes? part of being an adult is just getting to work. Place your order. DREAM. DREAM BIG. and then go about your life, doing the things you need to do, and trust that your order is on the way. Slow Down. Unplug. Go within and decide on purpose what is important and what isn’t and what you (and only you) can do right now to change this doom and gloom trajectory for yourself. Use the daily journaling worksheets. Listen to uplifting things. Decide that you are in charge and that you can do helpful things each and every day to better yourself and your life. And then just trust — your order is in transit. First off — you do not have to be everything to everybody. You do you. In this episode I talk about proper boundary setting when it comes to pushy relatives and last-minute invites, and how making a plan FIRST — when you are in a good mood — is the absolute best way to help set yourself up for a holiday season that you absolutely love and enjoy every bitty bit of (or at least enjoy the large percentage of!) Sometimes the pressure to make everything memorable and perfect and create a photo-finish is enough to make us crack. or enough to cause our back to go out. Here I am, not able to move, a week after Thanksgiving. I knew better, but I did way too much for way too many and neglected my own wants and wishes. I know that if I stick to my sleep schedule, get up and meditate and journal before everyone else gets up, I feel calm, centered, and “in control.” BUT. this past week at work was wonky — I had many teachers out sick (I’m a school secretary) so I was scrambling to find subs, we had our own crazy schedule at home with soccer and shuttling kids back to college and then back home again because of the UC strike — and I went too fast. I KNEW I was going too fast. and then, all of a sudden, my back went out. SO, take a listen, and do better than I did. 😉 I hope you enjoy this episode — and AS ALWAYS — if you have any questions or comments, shoot me an email or tag me @stephanieodea on Instagram or Facebook or record a voicemail question. 04 Mar 2024 | Getting into Yoga | 00:32:59
Today we are talking about one of my favorite things to do for my own physical and mental health... YOGA! It has taken me many years to embrace yoga but has truly transformed both my mind and body. I took my first yoga class when I was only 18 years old. A friend and I decided to try hot yoga and we soon realized that it was not for the faint of heart. Needless to say we did not make it through the entire class. But this started my wellness journey. I always looked at exercise as a way to keep my body looking a certain way. Through my 20-30s exercise was just something that I did, it was not a mind and body connection. I tried light weight training which led to high interval training. But ultimately I felt that disconnect between my mind and body. Since then I have rediscovered yoga and it has been a fantastic way to stay present and healthy. One of my favorite online yoga resources is Yoga with Adriene. She has an amazing YouTube channel full of great yoga videos. Follow along with her below! If you practice yoga or decide to try it for the first time let me know! I love hearing your stories! 06 Dec 2021 | How to Get What You Want When You Want It | 00:25:45
Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'DeaEpisode 9 - How to Get What You Want When You Want ItI get a lot of emails from readers/listeners who feel “stuck” in some way — they aren’t making forward progress with their goals or their resolutions — This is quite common, and if you feel like you, too, are not fully satisfied in all aspects of your life (time management, health, finances, organization, relationships) — let’s do something about it. You aren’t destined to run on a hamster wheel — let’s keep moving forward — itty bitty baby steps at a time. Once you know what the steps are to do the work to get where you want to go — everything comes together. Episode# 9: Getting What You Want When You Want It In this 9th episode of the Slow Living Podcast I explain how going through the steps of the Peace Pyramid, as outlined in the Simple Shortcuts to Peace course is the best way to be certain that ALL aspects of your life keep moving forward as you strive to meet your goals and aspirations. It’s not fun to Go Go Go and meet your financial goals or build out the business of your dreams if you destroy your health or your relationships in the process. Also? Because of this fear or underlying worry, many people decide (subconsciously or not) to give up on their wild and crazy dream/goal — because they are too concerned about the collateral damage striving for their goal may cause. I don’t want this for you. You truly deserve to “have it all” — there is plenty of time to keep your dream and vision alive. see all podcast notes at stephanieodea.com/podcastnotes Have any questions you’d like me to cover, or have a Slow Living Story of your own you’d like to share? Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'DeaEpisode 6 - CrockPot Slow Cooker Questions & TipsEpisode# 6: Your “burning” CrockPot Questions, Answered!! If you’ve been following along with me for a while — you probably know that I got my start writing online because in 2008 I made a New Year’s Resolution to use my crockpot slow cooker every day for a year and write about it online, at ayearofslowcooking.com. I love my crockpot. I really really do. But I started the site not because I thought I was an amazing cook with fantastic recipes. When I got started, I was just a mom who did sort of think of her slow cooker as a glorified potroast machine. After writing recipes and being “forced” to use the pot as much as I did/do — I now can confidently say I know an AWFUL lot about slow cookers. and I STILL think they are amazing!! Learn how to Meal Plan, stick to a budget, and deal with picky eaters. For all 1000 or so recipes that I've made -- all gluten free -- head over to AYearofSlowCooking.com. Segment #1

Because not all that you see is real. I know you already know this — but it’s really difficult sometimes to weed out what is accurate and authentic and what isn’t when it comes to posts online. Listen in as I share how brands tried their hardest to convince me what I should and shouldn’t say when it came to their products and how I decided to turn money down in order to stick to my ideals and ethics.
