04 Oct 2023 | Episode 9 Interview with Jim Avett | 00:40:59
Born in March of 1947 in central North Carolina, Jim Avett learned early the educational and entertainment value of storytelling. “I made an effort to write and remember core stories which became songs later in my life,” Jim says. Interviewing Jim Avett was an absolute pleasure. A man who loves to tell and sing stories, his depth of knowledge about music and songwriting is invaluable. We talk about creativity, the music business, not taking things too personally, fortitude, and working hard. While Jim’s sons, for those of you who don’t know, are Grammy-nominated artists The Avett Brothers (the “boys” to whom he refers in the interview), Jim is humble and an absolute diamond to the world of music. He believes songwriters should be true to themselves and share their stories. He says, “everyone is unique” and everyone has a story to tell. Jim sings us his song, “The World Goes Round and Round.” And he’s right, there could be 100 songs in this one. We are so honored to have been able to talk with Jim and we hope you enjoy listening to this interview as much as we enjoyed doing it. 02 Oct 2024 | Episode 47: Interview with Bowen Young | 01:08:27
The sisters are sooooooo excitedthat we got to talk to Bowen Young! We chatted with this divine duo about allthings music, like Brandon deciding to move to Nashville and “just give it awhirl,” and Clare’s advice to “lean into the weird” because we’re all uniqueand special. Nashville-based duo BOWEN * YOUNG embarks on a musical journey with their debut album, Us, a melodic tapestry woven by the harmonious souls of Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young. Produced by acclaimed Americana songwriter/producer Sean McConnell, their 10-track revelation is slated for a global release on May 3rd via Snakefarm/PIAS. Hailing from rural Australia, Clare, and Connecticut native Brandon infuse 'Us' with haunting, ethereal songs that delve into the depths of ferocious love, heartbreaking loss, and unwavering hope. Their musical collaboration, aptly named "Cinematic Americana," is a testament to the emotive songwriting, honest lyrics, and hypnotic harmonies that encapsulate their special bond. In the luminous shadow of their individual backgrounds, Clare, famed for her role as Scarlett O'Connor in 'Nashville,' and Brandon, a seasoned musician touring with legends like John Hiatt, share a common North Star—sweeping emotion, intimate moments, and bombastic sound. The couple's creative synergy found its missing piece in Sean McConnell. The revelation struck while composing 'Water To Wine,' a song that seamlessly captures the essence of their profound connection. Yet, life's shadows emerged in the form of 'Dangerous Love,' a single born from a harrowing experience when an assailant invaded their home. Undeterred, Clare and Brandon transformed adversity into art, choosing joy over fear. Entering the studio with McConnell and producer Roger Alan Nichols, they discovered the sweet spot of true emotion, using their crackling energy as the cornerstone. From the stripped-back 'Halo' to the unpolished honesty of 'To The Bone,' each track on 'Us' resonates with the authenticity of their musical journey. Clare's arrival in Music City in 2012 marked the beginning of a musical voyage with luminaries like Vince Gill and the Zac Brown Band. A pediatric cancer survivor, her life story adds a poignant layer to their narrative, emphasizing the resilience to embrace both light and dark. Brandon's journey, beginning in 2000, unfolds with nights spent filling composition books with melodies in Nashville. His collaborations with John Hiatt and contributions to projects such as 'Johnny Cash Forever Words' showcase the breadth of his musical prowess, heard in shows like 'Shameless'. Fate orchestrated their union in 2013, when Brandon became Clare's last-minute duet partner. Their unique chemistry blossomed into love, culminating in a magical proposal at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and a union officiated by John Carter Cash in 2017. The couple's musical saga continues to resonate globally such as sharing the stage with Billy Joel at BST/Hyde Park last year, a headlining US tour, and an astounding 838% growth on Spotify. The spotlight has embraced them, and the world eagerly awaits the May 3rd release of 'Us.' As the pages turn to 2024, the duo anticipates their return to the UK for the Highways Festival at The Royal Albert Hall on May 17th & 18th among other exciting opportunities. The symphony of BOWEN * YOUNG continues an enchanting tale of love, resilience, and a harmonious odyssey through the corridors of life and art. 13 Jan 2025 | Episode 72: Interview with Alice Wallace | 00:29:02
We talk with Alice Wallace on this episode about her recent release “Here I Am,” (released June 2024) imposter syndrome, and the endless way to write a song. Four years ago, Alice moved to Nashville after more than a decade in southern California, and Here I Am is the first of her albums to be recorded in true Music City style, backed by alineup of world-class musicians and recorded in two whirlwind days with no rehearsal. Produced by Nick Buda (Taylor Swift, Martina McBride, Dolly Parton), the album features some of the most talented musicians Music City has to offer. In addition to Nick Buda on drums, the record features GRAMMY-winning guitarist Kenny Greenberg (Willie Nelson, Wynonna Judd, Hayes Carll), bassist Ted Pecchio (Doyle Bramhall II, Susan Tedeschi), and keyboardist Jimmy Wallace (The Wallflowers). “This is an album about reclaiming myself–as an artist, as a woman, and as a person navigating a world that is beautiful and confusing and harsh,” she says. Since releasing her last LP, her life has changed immensely - a cross-country move, a career unexpectedly halted in 2020, falling in lovemore deeply than before, and being heartbroken more painfully than she ever knew she could be. “All of those changes gave me a chance to examine myself in ways I never had. This album covers a spectrum of emotion I haven’t been brave enough to share on an album before,” she continues. “This album is me.” Check Alice out here—

18 Oct 2023 | Episode 10: Interview with David Childers | 00:28:24
Singer songwriter David Childers is the proverbial study in contradictions. A resident of Mount Holly (or as he calls it, "Mount Hopeless"), North Carolina he's a former highschool football player a retired attorney, and a well-read poet and painter who cites both Chaucer and Kerouac as influences. He fell in love with folk as a teen, listens to jazz and opera and fed his family by practicing law before turning in his license to concentrate on his creative passions. Childers has always regarded his place in the music pantheon as that of an outsider, though not at all deserved. As those involved on his album indicate, he's well regarded among tastemakers. Evidence includes playing the syndicated World Cafe and Mountain Stage radio shows (he's done the latter twice), as well as Merlefest's main stage. He has also toured Europe and hopes to again. He credits the support of Dolph Ramseur and Bob Crawford with helping him sustain his musical career--which began in college--though he didn't start recording until the 1990's. 16 Jan 2024 | Episode 15: Interview with Jeff Hanke | 00:17:20
Jeff Hanke always knew he wanted to play music. Starting with a simple cheap type electric guitar and amp, like everybody else…he worked up to better gear and musical ability over the years. Take southern rock, fuse that with some classic hard rock, add some blues, and finally mix in some country and singer/songwriters for the content and you get a pretty good idea of where Jeff's coming from. 3 chords and the truth speak volumes. What's undeniable about Jeff is his music's ability to present it to, and for, the common man and the ever so humble underdog. Writing common themes that normal people (and underdogs) can relate to. 06 Jan 2025 | Episode 69: Interview with Hannah Juanita | 00:30:42
We had an amazing chat with Hannah Juanita about her second full length album, "Tennessee Songbird," (released 8/30/24), the sense of community she found when she moved back to Nashville, and touring with her dog Loretta. Hannah Juanita recorded ‘Tennessee Songbird’ at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, TN; her second full-length album following 2021’s ‘Hardliner’. Produced by Mose Wilson, the album features an all-star Nashville band with Bruce Bouton, Dennis Crouch, Chris Scruggs, Fred Eltringham, Riley Downing (The Deslondes), and more. Hannah Juanita left her home state of Tennessee in her early twenties to break out of a stifling culture of conformity and meet the world. She travelled in search of herself, worked odd jobs, and spent countless nights singing fireside under the stars with friends, never pursuing music as a career. Eventually, Hannah made it back to Tennessee, landing in Nashville with nothing but herdog Loretta, her guitar, and a handful of heartbreak songs. She started singing around town and quickly became a staple live performer and a highly respected vocalist in the traditional country scene in Music City, known for her classic, old-school sound. 10 Jan 2025 | Episode 71: Interview with Melanie Maclaren | 00:40:15
In this episode, we talk with Melanie Maclaren about giving herself permission to be an artist, crediting history, comedy, and philosophy as influences and her EP “Bloodlust.” The EP "Blood Lust's" writing came from a period in Melanie’s life that was marred by grief, loss, and illness. The project is an ode to seeing things as they are - without mythology or artificial glory. Not to shy away from life’s paradoxes and dualities of life, this project is Melanie’s most high-spirited anthemic music to date. The songs draw deeply from 90’s country influences with hints of Lucinda Williams, Silver Jews, and Gillian Welch, all while staying true to herinstinct for flipping conventions of the genre and subject matter on their head. Melanie’s lyrics have been described as “haunting yet humorous” and possessing a “sentimental cynicism” that “oozes with Gen-Z relatability.” This duality shines through in all aspects of her music—she’s a classical finger-style guitar who grew up playing classical but uses ambient beds and distorted traditional instruments to punctuate her compositions. At her core, Melanie is a realist with a gift for language that extracts beauty from even the darkest reality and a unique ability to blend a tongue-in-cheek sensibility with timeless style. Dan Zlotnick has been called “the Americana voice of Westchester County, New York” because his joyous, warm energy emanates through his songs and performances. After a three-year independent minor league baseball career, Dan began writing and performing original music. A child of classic rock radio who dug deep into folk music in college, Dan half-jokingly claims that Jimmy Page taught him guitar and John Prine taught him lyric-writing. His sound is like the multi-generational family photo hanging on the wall, and his lyrics are like the stories you share with your best friends after a hearty home cooked meal.
Dan has made fans and friends in living rooms, backyards, and small venues around the country, as well as on prestigious stages like Tarrytown Music Hall, Paramount Hudson Valley Theater, Daryl’s House Club, Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre, Pleasantville Music Festival, and Towne Crier Cafe. He has opened for artists including Drew Holcomb, The Felice Brothers, Marc Cohn, Patty Larkin, Jim Avett, Jessica Lynn, Arlen Roth, and more. 27 Jan 2025 | Episode 78: Interview with Avery Hill | 00:35:11
Avery Hill was full of insightful things to say in this latest episode. As a musician and teacher (both ukelele and songwriting) we had a lot of questions for her. We talked with her about making mix tapes back in the day, drawing inspiration by seeing live music, and the power of the natural world. Portland-based singer-songwriter Avery Hill is set to release her sophomore full-length album, The One Who Remembers, on November 1, 2024. This album marks a significant return to her roots as a storyteller and reflects Avery's profound personal journey. "The title is an introduction to myself as an artist," Avery explains. "I am not a flashy performer or a storm chaser; I am the one who remembers." She further elaborates, "Fundamentally, every artist is a 'rememberer,' and the purpose of art is to invite us all to remember what it is to be human." The album title, she adds, is also the title of the opening track and represents "a certain amount of humility" and "a truer picture of myself," emphasizing that her role is to reflect and make sense of experiences rather than seek attention.Avery's music career began in a home filled with the sounds of her parents' favorites. She recalls, "My mother bought me my first guitar and patiently listened to me rave about Joni Mitchell. My father made me mixtapes and taught me to harmonize to The Beach Boys on the radio." Originally aspiring to be a teacher, Avery's life took a creative turn after teaching in classrooms across Germany, Vermont, Washington, and Oregon. Avery's passion for teaching remained strong alongside her music career. "Teaching music became as fulfilling as writing and performing," she says. She started teaching ukulele in 2013 and has become a staple in Portland's ukulele community. "I strive to educate everyone's inner musician, elevate their self-knowledge and confidence, and enchant them with insight, presence, and a handful of good jokes." Check out Avery here--

08 Oct 2024 | Episode 48: Interview with William Lee Golden and Danni Stefanetti | 00:26:17
New Podcast alert!!! https:sistersinsong.callcast.co The sisters had the great pleasure of talking with William Lee Golden of Oakridge Boys fame and Australian Singer Songwriter Danni Stefanetti about their beautiful new collaboration “I’veGot My Heart on You” available everywhere! Oak Ridge Boy William Lee Golden debuts as a songwriter at 85 years old with “I’ve Got My Heart on You,” a heartfelt duet featuring rising star Danni Stefanetti. Inspired by his son Solomon’s words during his touring days, this song blends Golden’s legendary status with Stefanetti’s fresh talent. Golden, a Country and Gospel Hall of Famer with 5 Grammys, brings decades of experience to his first self-penned track. Stefanetti, an award-winning artist, adds her virtuoso guitar skills and contemporary flair. This collaboration offers a poignant tribute to family bonds. With Golden’s rich baritone and Stefanetti’s emotive vocals, “I’ve Got My Heart on You” promises to resonate with longtime fans and new listeners alike, showcasing the timeless power of country music toconnect generations. William Lee Golden has long been a Renaissance man. An accomplished painter, photographer, entertainer, and member of both the Country and Gospel Music Halls of Fame, the longtime Oak Ridge Boy has enjoyed a long, very successful career. Never content to rest on his laurels, at 85, he’s always stretching his creative horizons and does so yet again as the solosongwriter on his latest release “I Got My Heart on You.” For Stefanetti, winner of the 2023 Josie Award for Female Vocalist, getting to work with one of her musical heroes was a dream come true. “He’s so easy to work with and it’s a bit surreal because I remember sitting backstage at the Opry watching the Oak Ridge Boys doing ‘American Made’ on my first trip to Nashville,” she says with a smile. “Working with him was a real treat and this song is so special. The melody just really hit me the first time I heard it because it is really beautiful and really touching.” Though written for his son, Stefanetti feels “I Got My Heart on You” will have universal appeal. “It could be a love song as well. It could be about a family member. It could even be something that William could dedicate to Rusty,” she says referring to Golden’s eldest son, who died of a heart attack on July 1, 2024. “The song encompasses all kind of relationships. It’s got such a universal appeal. I don’t think William realized that when he wrote it, but you hear it different every time you listen to it.” Check them out here:

03 Jan 2025 | Episode 68: Interview with Casey Neill | 00:44:21
We had an amazing chat with Casey Neill about his latest release "Time Zero Land," sequencing the album, and something music fans should never do! Portland, Oregon-based songwriter Casey Neill talks about time zero land (released July 26th on Fluff & Gravy Records). This album follows last fall’s Casey Neill & the Norway Rats’ Sending Up Flares, and includes two outtakes from those band sessions. Neill engineered the rest at his home studio and plays the lion's share of the instruments. It's a dreamy affair with sonic homages to Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, Sade, the acoustic side of Rust Never Sleeps, and the Brit-folk pioneered by Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson, and June Tabor. One of the things people often say about the Norway Rats is how their music defies easy genre categorization and while Sending Up Flares leans into the fruits of that collaboration, time zero land embraces the influences and craft songwriting that has been at the core of Neill's work. A prolific songwriter and road warrior since the late 1990s, Americana and Scots/Irish-folk influences have often underscored his songwriting. Sending Up Flares hints at a European influence too, with songs that channel everything from the cinematic sweep of golden-era U2 to the dark, complex alt-rock of PJ Harvey. If time zero land is intimate and largely acoustic, then Sending Up Flares is broad, eclectic, and every bit as explosive as its title. A four-piece string section (Bizarre Star, arranged by Kyleen King) adds a symphonic punch to “How Beautiful Am I?,” the album’s tribute to Marianne Faithfull. Synths, stacked vocal harmonies, and burbling electronics run throughout “Fall Into Forever,” bringing to life the song’s bizarre storyline involving a Tokyo typhoon, Dante’s Paradiso, and pop star Britney Spears. Together, these 11 songs shine new light on a band who, after more than a dozen years together, have arrived somewhere singular and startlingly unique. Check him out here:

Bailey’s voice has graced the stages of Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Bluebird Cafe, Georgia Theater, and many festivals including FloydFest, Americanafest, and Memphis in May. 17 Jan 2025 | Episode 74: Interview with Mary Bragg | 00:43:10
We really enjoyed talking with Mary Bragg about her new EP “The Quiet One” OUT TOMORROW (1/23/25). We got really deep chatting about the importance of listening, getting lost in theactivity of writing, accepting your inner critic rather than fighting it, and so much more including her recent wedding! An artist, songwriter, producer, and engineer, the Swainsboro, Georgia native began to fully come into her own with her 2017 record, the critically acclaimed Lucky Strike. Hailedas a “sublime distilling of Southern grit” by NPR, the album dipped its toes into a kind of radical honesty that Bragg had only previously hinted at, which she then committed further to for her self-titled album, Mary Bragg, released in 2022. Covering heartbreak, divorce, coming out, grief, and self-actualization, Mary Bragg depicts themes centered around the life tenets most important to her – love, kindness, and honesty. 17 Dec 2024 | Episode 63: Interview with Bronte Fall | 00:29:37
We had a great time talking to Bronte Fall about her new album “Not Done Yet” (released October 25, 2024) and the special meaning behindthe title. We talked about having a good support system to help silence that inner critic, and how you don’t have to “do it all at once.” Teri Bracken’s career as Brontë Fall began almost accidentally. The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs had always been a music obsessive, dreaming of forming her own bands and playing on stages. While working as the “door girl” at an indie music venue in Chicago, a chance opportunity allowed her to bookher first gig as an artist. She quickly came up with a band name (honoring her favorite writers, the Brontë sisters), compiled all the original songs she had, and never, ever looked back. Fall's road to acclaimed songwriter began in childhood when she picked up piano at age 7. Classical violin lessons soon followed, and eventually she was tapped as the singer/violinist in a collegerock band with a group of nineties rock loving frat boys. After leaving the guys, she further pursued her passion for violin playing at Berklee, which is where she fell in love with songwriting once and for all. Fall eventually made her way to Nashville—a dream come true considering it is a songwriter’s mecca. Though most of her instrumental focus is on guitar these days for pure convenience’s sake, Fall still brings out her violin and even performs on piano during her shows—she never sings a note empty handed. These live shows and releases have earned her plenty of praise, with Music Mecca noting: "Finding beauty at the end is what Brontë Fall seems to always know how to do and listeners get to follow her journey alongside her.” After a family tragedy struck in 2022, Fall rededicated herself to her craft, emerging with plenty of scar tissue and a batch of new songs that she considers her best yet. That lineup is highlighted by "Woman Like Me.” The track is both a reminder of Fall’s skills as asongwriter and a significant leap forward in both sound and style. It’s a defining statement, the culmination of years grinding for a shot and, at the same time, a new beginning. Check her out here:

30 Jul 2024 | Episode 39: Interview with Austin Thompson of the Way Down Wanderers | 00:25:48
The sisters visit with Austin Thompson of the Way Down Wanderers. Often referred to by fans as one of the hardest-working, hardest-touring bands on the circuit today, the 5-piece Illinois-based act not only proves that classification with their jam-packed tour schedule but also on stage every night, with youthful exuberance and a lively stage show, asreliable as it is infectious. High energy percussion, mandolin, guitar, bass, banjo, and fiddle weave seamlessly together to create an experience for fans that has sold out shows across the UK and the United States, filling the front rows with fans not just singing along to one tune, but singing along to all of them. “Everybody says it. We’d be nothing without our supporters. Yeah, they buy tickets and of course we love that, but when we’ve been on the road for 10hours and walk onto a stage road weary and we see familiar faces singing along, it’s hard to describe. It's everything, really. There’s a whole lot of love there.” Music enthusiasts are not the only ones taking note. Critics and tastemakers alikehave awarded the young artists an impressive number of accolades ranging fromofficial showcases at AmericanaFest (2018) and International Bluegrass MusicAssociation (2016) to Whitstable UK Session of the Year (2017), a BBC ScotlandSession (2017) as well as Finalist, International Song Writing Competition(2015 & 2016), Chicago’s Best Emerging Artist, Deli Magazine (2014) andSongpickr’s Best Songs Spotify Playlist (2016) among others. The young men areno strangers to the festival circuit either, having played major National andRegional Festivals such as Merlefest, Summer Camp, Red Wing Roots MusicFestival and Saskatchewan Jazz Fest all across the United States, Canada andthe UK. The band has also graced the stage of coveted venues such as BluegrassUnderground (TN), The Fox Theater (CO), Park West (IL), The Vogue (IN) TheStation Inn (TN) The Gramercy Theater (NYC), and countless others. 30 Jan 2025 | Episode 79: Interview with Rebecca Frazier | 00:31:34
In this episode, we had a great time talking with Rebecca Frazier about her latest release “Boarding Windows in Paradise , “ her obsession with flatpicking, and taking care ofyourself in a self-loving way. She also schools us on what flatpicking is! Grounded in her roots as a native Virginian, bluegrass trailblazer Rebecca Frazier found herselfreawakening to a whole new journey of inspiration and invention. For the flatpicking luminary, who achieved notoriety in the music world as the first woman ever to appear on the cover of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, that creative rebirth turned into her most captivatingwork yet: BOARDING WINDOWS IN PARADISE, released September 13, 2024 on Compass Records. The album title seems appropriate, as Frazier stepped into these last years with more strength and intention than ever before. Like the generations of her ancestors who havelived along Virginia’s coast, she, too, has weathered life’s hurricanes and battering winds — and witnessed its luminous beauty — and she wanted to capture that juxtaposition on this record. We had a great time talking with Will Wesley from the road! He phoned in his interview on his return home from the Josie Awards, after performing at the CMA stage and receiving 4 nominations. We visited about his song “12:00 in Texas” which he wrote for his brother whopassed away from a drug overdose, putting the cellphone and going outside. Grit has forever seeped from the pores of country rocker Will Wesley. He was born a rebellious one, sneaking into bars at 15 to play the blues that pumped through his veins. But today, Wesley follows in the footsteps of artists such as Eric Church and Jason Aldean, more than ready to show off his rock edge as much as his tender, lyrical heart. And despite a career that has already found him touring several countries in Europe and Southeast Asia, performing in venues such as the Switzerland International Country Music Hall of Fame and the Jackson, Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, playing alongside the likes of Alabama, Jason Boland & the Stragglers and Robert Cray, this is somewhat a new beginning for Will Wesley as he finds himself ready to conquer the world. Check out this episode where we talk the importance of clean water with John Bolten of the band Geraldine they get ready to serve as the houseband for the Annapolis Baygrass festival kicking off THISWEEKEND September 21-22, 2024. We take a deep dive (pun intended)into comparingpunk rock and old time music and saying a lot with a little. Geraldine’s mantra is ‘Good Time Old Time’. They are a country-leaning string band bringingsongwriting to the forefront, while blending elements of old time, American folk, bluegrass, and alternative country in a distinctive, enthusiastic sound. As stewards of Appalachian motifs in a modern framework, they bring banjo, mandolin, guitar, fiddle, and Appalachian flat foot dancing to the front of the stage, accented with lush four-part harmonies, in a free-wheeling repertoire of both rare and wonderful gems from the past and original songs. " The perfect blend of grit, drive, originality, and fun – Baltimore’s Geraldine embodies all that’s good in a modern stringband. In studio and on-stage, the quartet dips and dives through raucous fiddle tunes and soulful songs to create a fresh sonic landscape that knows no bounds. Anchored by John Bolten’s creative songwriting, the spotlight is shared evenly across their dynamic lineup featuring Jonathan Vocke on banjo, Josh Anderson on fiddle, and Jocelyn Haversat on feet and upright bass. In a modern roots music landscape that can be overly polished and predictable, Geraldine is as genuine as it gets and you’ll never quite know where they’re going next.” -- Brad Kolodner, Folk Alley, Bluegrass Country Radio Check the band out here: Website: Geraldineband.com IG: thegeraldineband FB: Geraldine YouTube: @geraldineband And check out the festival here: baygrass.festival.com

We really enjoyed our chat with Sophie Gault about writing gut-punching songs and being a vessel for songwriting. Its always a pleasure talking to strong, genre-defying artists! I had returned to New York for the first time in eight, nine, ten years to promote my first album, and the Baltic Hotel is where I stayed. It felt like a homecoming. I was like, wow, I went to Nashville, I made an album. And at that point, I didn’t know I was going to make a second album, but I felt like I had accomplished something and I was proud." 03 Jul 2024 | Episode 36: Interview with Alan Walker | 00:42:08
Check Alan out here: www.alanwalkermusic.net Born and raised in New York City, Alan Walker has been playing in clubs there since the mid-80s, with his first show at CBGBs and his first band Club Iguana. He is the former lead singer and piano & organ player of rootsy/melodic pop band, The Brilliant Mistakes, who were aptly named after a song by one of their songwriting mentors, Elvis Costello. The Brilliant Mistakes had a great run starting in 1993, releasing three albums (two with Schleifer producing) before stopping in 2012. The band frequented the downtown NYC club scene and, at one time, was a WFUV favorite, appearing live there as well as with Jerry Treacy on his 'Crash on The Levee' radio show. They were played by David Dye on WXPN's World Cafe as well as on Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight and performed at SXSW for a few years. Alongside his musical career, Walker works full time in book publishing (VP of Higher Education at Penguin Random House). He spoke more about it all in a 2019 podcast interview with Center Stage with Pamela Kuhn, who says he, "has put the polish on life as a popular musician while having an extended and successful livelihood in publishing... Every great composer has their own love of the marriage of music and word. And I can't help but feel that Alan Walker has kept his creativity fresh with his day 'gig' at Penguin Publishing that keeps honing his skills."Although the city definitely had an effect on who Alan Walker is, the songs he writes, and certainly the musicians he has become most closely involved with, he says, "I get just as much inspiration from being in the country, outdoors hiking with my dogs or on a road bike. I'm half city, half country boy, having grown up in NYC and the hills of Western MA. I'd like to think there is both humor and a subtle edge to my lyrics, which may be the city side of me, and also melancholy in my melodies, which is the country part, but then again, maybe it's not so simple, and it's all mixed up in the soup that my songs come out of." A Little Too Late is a follow-up to Walker's 2019 debut Something Up My Sleeve and will be released on June 28 on Aunt Mimi's Records.

AmericanaFest Showcase artist Cris Jacobs joins us on the show to talk about his recently released album, “One of These Days,” and how making it was like returning home. We chat about embracing the good and bad of the songwriting process and learning to be comfortable with imperfection. Cris Jacobs lost his way. Most of us do. Part of the story is in those lost days. But more of the story is in what we find again. For Jacobs, the last several years have been hard—and transformative. With a vote of confidence from a legend, a no. 2 pencil and scratchpad, and his acoustic guitar, he went into his barn to write and emerged with his finest album to date. Produced by Jerry Douglas, “One of These Days” is a stunning collection of storytelling and song, rooted in bluegrass, folk and blues, but unencumbered by rules and expectations. The Infamous Stringdusters serve as the album’s rollicking house band, joined by friends including Billy Strings, Sam Bush, Lee Ann Womack, the McCrary Sisters, Lindsay Lou and more. The result is unfettered, joyful virtuosity, swirling around Jacobs’ powerful voice, gut-check meditations, and close-up character sketches. 28 Aug 2024 | Episode 43: Interview with Eddie Isola and Matt Tonner of the 502s | 00:33:29
The sisters talk with Eddie and Matt of the charismatic 502s from Florida! We discuss their GreatAmerican Road Trip Tour, playing and making songs you like, and doing homeworkas a band. The 502s are an American indie folk band from Maitland, Florida formed by Eddie Isola. Their sound has been described as a "folk orchestra", and as a blend of roots, rock and bluegrass. Their live shows received praise for “rambunctious energy, stomping sounds... and charismatic personalities” by Cowboys & Indians. Initially consisting of Eddie Isola and his cousins with a rotating cast of musicians, the band's longest standing consistent lineup includes Matthew Tonner (keyboards, guitars), Joe Capati(saxophone), Sean Froehlich (drums & percussion) and Nicholas Melashenko(bass guitar) with their newest member Graci Phillips joining the band in 2023. Shortly after the band's inception in 2016, The 502s won a contest to perform at Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, alongside Mumford and Sons, The Avett Brothers, and Kendrick Lamar, beating out over 800 contest entrants. 03 Dec 2024 | Episode 58: Interview with Juliet Lloyd | 00:35:16
We had a great time talking with Juliet Lloyd about her soul-pop-folk sound, Gem and the Holograms, burn out, and the utility of therapy. Juliet Lloyd is an acclaimed singer/songwriter who splits her time between Nashville, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C. Across her 20-year career as a writer and artist, Juliet has released three albums, garnering placements on television shows on MTV and VH1 and airplay on more than 175 radio stations across the country. Released on October 25th, Lloyd’s new album Carnival is the culmination of years away from the music industry grind, the hours spent writing through some of life’s hardest challenges, and the reintroduction of an artist now ripe with wisdom and experience. Recorded in an unhurried process over nearly 15 months and produced by Todd Wright (Lucy Woodward, Butch Walker, Toby Lightman), Carnival’s nine songs are a study in contrasts: Light and dark, devastating and self-deprecating, apologetic and angry, conversational and conceptual. They are genre-fluid, weaving elements of pop, folk, soul, and rock to create a vibrant and often unexpected platform for Lloyd’s unflinching storytelling. Check her out here:
