The social instinct has given us plenty of gifts and ‘real heroes’ to work with in our dreams in order to get a fuller picture of ourselves. We talk a bit about the importance of accepting these social roles playing out in the inner world before transitioning into understanding the sexual instinct. Today’s discussion is on the possible symbols relating to the head center in dreams. We go through themes like the physical head, swords, medication, air, birds, video games, and more. Each idea is met with references to external resources, personal experiences, dreams, or examples to highlight where these symbols live in the head center. These dream symbols are not to be taken literally or be fully attributed to ‘the head center’; this is a way for us to be thinking creatively about our enneagram type and dreams.

Today, Sammy and Kristen discuss the appearance of animals in dreams and how they could be the messengers of our instinctual natures. The girls mainly focus on the objectivity an animal’s nature can provide to our instincts, rather than getting stuck in the neurosis of the subjective personality’s relationship to instinct. The many facets of self-preservation are discussed, as well as the different centers of intelligence in the Enneagram. Some personal dream examples are used to articulate the potential pivots of our autonomy and choices in life when we receive the message of a dream animal. We thought it was best to separate the symbols in dreams by sexual types and sexual blinds, since the feelings and energies are usually hiding more within the sexual instinct rather than within just the tangible symbols and situations. Kristen and Sammy discuss Carl Jung’s piece on ‘The Transcendent Function’. They read a few excerpts and describe how they see personality type impacting this method, but also how accessing this space allows the ‘machine’ of type to be more regulated by its compensatory counterpart; the unconscious. Letting this theory be a part of the conversation with Enneagram type can give more flavor or color to our individual struggles, rather than just working with type as a description of qualities and behaviors.

Sammy and Kristen talk about what object relations might be highlighting about the body center and the unconscious. We break down the previously mentioned concepts of the container, blurred boundaries, anger, unconscious identification, and how all of this could be showing up in each of the body types.

All of the body types/centers are dissociated and confused where their boundaries really are or where they are not. With the idea of ‘holding’, both in the environment and with others, we can learn how to make more space for parts of us that are outcasted or unloved. Using dreams as a way to see where or who we’re projecting these parts of us in can be a useful way to strengthen our container and identify our true boundaries.

Kristen and Kaisa explore the topic of anger and rage in the body center. We discuss how anger can initially be projected, but the real work is within undergoing an internal process that requires contemplation of the source and direction of energy. Anger can be a creative process and actually regenerate modes of energy stuck within the body. Through uncovering our own relationship to anger in dreams and life, we start to understand how it can be cultivated and used as a tool.

We also look at how anger has appeared in mythology such as the archetype of Ares and Hephaestus. Anger can show up not only when boundaries are being disrespected, but also when feelings of being ‘pushed out’ or outcasted appear. Looking at these examples can help understand the complexities of anger and how it can become more conscious. The contemplation and reflection of anger is essential in the process of individuation. ‘Releases’ from anger such as creativity, grief, or humor is also a helpful part of working with the intense experience.

We did our homework and asked the unconscious to reveal our relationships with the self-preservation instinct in our dreams. For this episode, we look at Sammy’s sp/so dream, first. We observe what self-preservation symbols appear and how she’s relying on her dominant instinct for a lot of her daily actions and decisions. 

The next dream comes from Kristen as we observe how an so/sp dream would address the self-preservation instinct when it’s secondary. The relationship is just as rich and revealing as to how much neglect or judgment is coming from the dream ego in trying to understand something that isn’t as close to home.

To begin our dive into some of the mythology of the sexual instinct, Sammy presents a dream she’s had on this journey so far. It has a strange connection with the story of Hephaestus, so we discuss the similarities and differences, and how it all relates to Sammy’s process and the sexual instinct itself. The concept is discussed more abstractly this time, exploring the ‘third’ element’s role and energetic component when working with dreams. To continue the idea of ‘Type Ensouled’, Sammy and Kristen reflect on their own dreams and how they’ve correlated with their personality and life experiences. We use the power of stories and myth to amplify the purpose of our personal enneagram types. To be able to ‘catch the thread’ of our human and soul path became a fun and interesting attempt to play with the creative energies that are present.

Whatever kind of mess we have made of it, we can somehow see the totality of who we are and recognize how our blunderings are related. A second mythological theme we look at in this episode is dismembering and reassembling. This theme is shown through shamanic traditions and the myths of Dionysus, Osiris, Ymir, etc. We discuss why dismembering and reassembling would be important in the sexual instinct, and also how it might show up in an egoic way. We bring in some of our own dreams where this theme shows up. 

Along with this mythology, there is also an aspect of ‘eating of the flesh’. Since the veil between this world and the realm of the dead is thin around the time of Halloween/Samhain, we get extra spooky in this conversation with topics of fleshy spiders and eating corpses.

To continue the topic of the head center, we discuss how metaphor can be a way to ‘open’ us up to different narratives or perspectives. When bringing in the aspect of ‘play’ to dreams, symbols can feel more autonomous and alive, giving us a chance to be impacted and moved by them. Kristen and Sammy talk about their own experiences ‘playing’ and being fascinated by metaphor, tying in previous topics from the head center. Kristen also talks about a recent experience with a shift from looking at a dream in a flat way as opposed to a creative and metaphorical way.

The large and complex topic of Carl Jung’s Anima and Animus is broken down in relation to the sexual instinct in dreams. Sammy starts out relaying a dream she had that transitions the conversation into how our inner Other shows up in a dream and why. We talk about the relationship to our unconscious material, the passion for longing, devotion, self-expression, our wholeness, and even more of a mix of what these fascinating figures could be representing. It’s spooky season, so the team decided to talk about nightmares since it correlates synchronistically with the head center.
