Hi, welcome back, come on in. Today we're going to attack the Minor Pentatonic Scale.
If you're a visual learner, write this down on a big piece of something in front of you: 1; flat 3; 4; 5; flat 7; 8.
Now that's stuck in your brain forever, we're going to manipulate your sound to play with "Sob" Quality. Open your throat, smile, don't worry about anything. It's all going to be ok.
The chords in the song section are A minor and D minor.
This Ep we're going to hassle out "Twang quality". We're going to find the strength and supreme delight in getting you nose working when you sing. It's totally a thing.
If you're a visual kind of person, get out something and write this on it:
The Blues Scale: 1; flat 3; 4; flat 5; 5; flat 7; 8.
Then we're gonna sing a Blues song about getting stuff wrong.
Hi Dear Singing Lesson for No One Community! Here is a long overdue Singing Lessons For No One Episode for you to sink your teeth into. In this Episode, we explore singing Vowels, Consonants and Singing from the Heart, or what I call Bosom Singing. You know when you hug someone to your chest in a caring warm hug in to the chest kind of way? Yeah, well, it's that, but in singing form. I'm playing the chords E and A! Easy! Lets jam!
Hey Look at me cooking with Gas! I know right! Hey, in this episode we explore the Major Pentatonic Scale - 1 2 3 5 6 it starts a little jazzy, grooves past country and rounds the corner in soul music as it usually does round here...
Then we delve into a world of Vocal Registers. From your chest voice- where you might normally speak, up through to your head voice. And the grand canyon between. Dont be afraid, we sing it pretty fun!
Thanks for listening!

Then we'll have a big long note, breathe deep sing for Sparrows! I was a little bit hypo about the bass. Fun as fun can be. Exploring harmonies, open your mouth, let it out.
Thanks for singing with me!

I just wanted to let you know in case you or someone you know may be local to this area that I will be running a series of workshops on Songwriting and Vocal Joy. It's like the podcast, but with a group, in a studio, so its not really like the podcast at all is it... hmmm...
It’ll be songwriting exercises into your heart and vocal exploration and community and all the good things. Please check it out!
If you're local to the area, or you're about, these will run next year as well, book in a holiday! Ha! Good times!
I just baked Banana Bread. Our freezer was full of banana's. It was getting weird. So here's a warm up exercise using a Major Chord and a Minor Chord 1 2 3 5 3 2 1 in Gb Major, over to 1 2 b3 5 b3 2 1 in Ab minor. In a 3/4 time,
"What is that thing I can smell Is it some thing I don’t like? What is that Banana smell? Is it banana bread?"
It'll make sense. Good Good.
Then, there's a blank song for you to write a song to. A writing exercise!! Whaaat?! Yes!!
Awesome! xx Shelly

When I first made this Podcast it was my original idea to also release the episodes without my ranting in it. So you could use just the vocal exercises to recap, or drive to your gig warming up, or, whatever they might be useful for to you.
Turns out, I didn't follow through with that idea... So, This is me, following through with that idea...
I will release this first one to the public as an example for what I'm trying to create, but these will only be available to patrons via my Patreon page at: https://www.patreon.com/Shelly_Brown

Hi there, This is a project that has been on the burners for about two years, and now I've made it to this point - I'm holidng my breath - Is this a thing? Does this work? For about two decades I have attended so many songwriting workshops. I love word games, heart games, writing, creative writing, all the things. And for the last two years, I have been teaching songwriting workshops in Byron Bay (NSW Australia), whilst also making the Singing Lessons for No One Podcast (sporadically...) I wanted to make the Workshops in to SOMETHING... An online course? There's so many... Ideas are endless.. But really. My podcast is nearing 100k streams. I feel like that might mean people, like, actually, like it? I dunno. Anyway. Does Songwriting exercises on a podcast work? Would a classroom listen to this? Is this useful to you? If even, say, a person, one single person said yes, then, there's more where this came from. So, if you can, lemme know ok?
This Podcast Episode holds: Vocal Warm Up - Major Scale, Songwriting Exercise: Introduction Singing Exercise - Major and Minor Chords Songwriting Exercise - Vegetable Songwriting Exercise - Alphabet Garden Singing Exercise - Mood Indigo

Hey, I ran into a friend in the shops and he asked if I teach five year olds... and Its been on my mind ever since... Like... Maybe, what would I say to my five year old self? I grew up singing with my family. After dinner dad would play guitar, we sang all these funny old songs that I don't even know if anyone else knew. The other kids listened to Michael Jackson and Prince, I was singing Bernard Bolan, and The Clancy Brothers and John Williamson... A random array of nutty Dad songs. That entirely shaped my 'let's sing' attitude. So, this ones a warm up that is loosey goosey and silly fun, and then a singing thing thats from an African inspired Choir Harmony, Bob Marley, Anjelique Kidjo stunning song. Sing along. You don't have to get in an actual car. Make on out of Cardboard. It can be imaginary. You dont have to actually be five years old. You can just pretend that bit too.
Hi beautiful folks, It's been too long, But here is a new one. I've been busy singing the things and writing and working and all the things. But you've been on my mind, so here's a new episode to hum along with for sure.
A Major Scale with a Drone, And exercise that the amazing Harry James Angus shared with me. Check him out, he's got a new song out. And some breathing exercises to calm the nerves.
Thanks so much for listening and sending hello's from around the world. I can't tell you how much I love to read my fan mail. It makes me feel all special in my heart. Lotsa love to you xx Shelly
May I begin this introduction with the clearest heading that I am in no way a Doctor and nor have I studied anything close to something offical in that realm.
This is a story about a friend, and a singing lesson from an empathetic, well meaning person on a rainy day.
I send this with the best intentions and care and I hope you're going ok today.
In this episode I jam along with Grant Gerathy on the Drum kit. You can track him down on instagram @cruisetheday_moneybynight
And we jam on my song,
I would be so honoured and humbly grateful to ask that you might go and listen to my song, and stick it on two of your favourite playlists, if you felt like it was a vibe... That would be so wonderful.
This is a message to a friend, and I thought you'd like it too. Cause you're my friend. I don't swear in my pod, but I do say shit twice in this. Sorry about that. Is Shit a swear word?
Happy New 2025 has Begun. And I've squirrelled away an afternoon to say hi. I wanted to sing a big hard song to start the year. It's called Magalenha, by the incredible Sergio Mendez. I begin in D Major, and an Aminor. And we sing a major scale and then, technically a Mixolydian scale cause I flatten the 7, as the song requires.
We sing this bit: Calangulango, do calango da pretinha, 'Tô cantando essa mudinha pra senhora se lembrar,
Daquele tempo que vivia la na roça com uma filha Na barriga e outra filha pra criar

Welcome Back! It's been too long :) Season 2 - Episode 1 Harmonic Minor Scale 1, 2, flat 3, 4, 5, flat 6, natural 7, 8 Egyptian sound at the bottom, and spooky at the top. "I haven't had my coffee yet"... :)
In the key of E minor- the Minor 11 Chord 1, flat 3, 5, flat 7, 9, 11
And then a chordal game where you take out one number and still sing the rest of the exercise. And then a songwriting game, I'll start you off, and then you make something up...
"I don't know which way I should Go..... I wanna be free baby".
This episode we had the incredible Grant Gerathy (Jon Butler) join us on the Drum Kit, And the Delightful Dan Brown (he's famous cause he's my husband) play the bass and keys. Cause singing exercises should be Funky and have a good back beat! Yeah!
Hello 2021, you crazy chicken. I've missed making my podcast so very much and I aim to jump back on the bandwagon as much as I can this year. If you love it half as much as I do, please jump on my Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/Shelly_Brown
In this Episode we explore Modes. A way of singing new scales and exploring music theory. You'll hear me stretch my range a little bit - I go pretty high for me. I give it a whirl in two keys, so see how you go or drop me a line if you struggled and I'll find a key thats better for you.
Hi there, this Episode features the song by the delightful Vince Jones called 'Jettison' from his 2004 Live Album. I lead you through diving down from your G Major Scale to the D Mixolydian Scale and then we learn the Trumpet line from there. I do take it up a few semitones at the end so you can feel it in different keys. D is pretty Low on this horn line for me, but It's my intention to do things in a variety of Keys - for you, and You, and You!
Episodes are released EARLY to my amazing Patreon supporters, so please do head on over and jump onboard if you feel like thats your thang!
