Exploring the atrocities that occurred in WW2 Belarus through the eyes of a young boy, this could be the most important coming of age movie ever made. We talk about some of the things that could lead to the kind of brutality depicted in this film and have an interesting discussion. Potential trigger warning for this one though.

Coming of Age season continues with Ginger Snaps (2000). It’s very important to note that we are discussing the film Ginger Snaps and not the snack Ginger Snaps. Mistakes were made.

We are taking a slightly darker turn this week with Bad Boy Bubby (1993). The film that search-engines describes as a Comedy/Crime film but we don’t think it’s quite that simple. It’s a film about abuse, growing up, religion and art and doesn’t fit neatly into any one genre.

We discuss Rolf de Heer’s vision and the techniques he used to deliver this unusual piece of work to the world. We also talk about Nicholas Hope’s performance, character motivations, Bagpipes and what would happen if a human ate nothing but bread and sugar for 30 years. The answer is not nothing.

Come True (2020) is a Horror/Sci-Fi written and directed by Anthony Scott Burns and is the first movie in Dan's season of movies about dreams. 

Find out what we think it means, hear us gush about the sound and question if slippers are hard wearing enough for miles of walking on tarmac. For the final episode of our coming-of-age season we dive into the world of rock ‘n’ roll excess, teen angst and 1970’s fashion. Join us as we talk about Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous (2000).

We chat about the semi-autobiographical nature and explore it’s coming of age themes, the character complexities and particularly the portrayal of women. We also look at some of Cameron Crowe’s other films including Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and Aloha. Dan watched Aloha as part of this episode’s research. I believe that is called sacrifice. Dan also did some digging into the real-life Lester Bangs, portrayed brilliantly in Almost Famous by the great Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Surprisingly, this is the first vampire movie we've covered on the show and it's also the first Lance Henriksen film we've spoken about. It will not be the last of either of those things. 

We get into why Bill Paxton was so great IN EVERYTHING, the Terminator and Aliens connections, subverting the vampire genre and why is Homer.

As a thank you to all of our listeners and as a way to talk about the year in movies, we thought we would do a run-down show of our favourite 2023 movies.   We sat down after some day drinking at the pub to have a chat about 2023 films and to list our separate top 5 films of the year.
