12 Jan 2023Living a Hell Yes Habit with Kristi Nellor00:48:00

Send us a text

Do you need help working on your Hell Yes!?

On this episode of She's Brave I sit down with Kristi Nellor, a Soul Consultant, Author and Host of Hell Yes! Habit podcast. We talk about her time spent being an ‘A’ student, doing all the "right things", gaining all the accolades to prove herself. Kristi admits at the end of the day, the level of internal satisfaction just wasn’t there.

She recognized that she had been living a life based on the ideals of a masculine society and needed to find the bravery to let go of those constructs, embrace the feminine and create a balance between the two.  She chose to step into entrepreneurship and growth and step onto a new path of self-evolution – recovering from perfectionism and the need to have everything look a certain way. She may not know the answers, but she is trusting the process and committing to the end result.

Through this discussion you'll learn that perfectionism is actually high-functioning anxiety. The way out of perfectionism is through a brave commitment to choosing your own path, learning to say no when you mean it, and learning that when you say yes, make it a Hell Yes!

Send us a text

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Learn how to harness your innate bravery and resilience in the face of a life-altering diagnosis.
  • Discover self-advocacy's essential role when navigating the healthcare system's complexities.
  • Explore the multifaceted approach to healing, encompassing food, mind, body, and soul.
  • Gather simple, tasty, and accessible recipes specifically tailored for those managing diabetes.

Diana Barnett, a woman whose life was a constant struggle, emerged victorious against her own body's challenges. Born in 1963 with a cleft palate and perforated eardrums, she demonstrated resilience from infancy, enduring lengthy feedings under the care of Italian nuns. Her childhood battles included dealing with bullying due to a speech impediment resulting from her cleft palate. Despite occasional adult mockery, her spirit remained unyielding.

Yet, her most significant battle lay ahead. A doctor nonchalantly informed Diana of her presumed diagnosis - type one diabetes, pancreatic cancer, spleen cancer, and a gallbladder issue. This news hit hard, but Diana refused to succumb. She dismissed the detached doctor and sought a second opinion. After an emotional whirlwind and numerous medical consultations, she discovered the initial diagnosis was incorrect.

Armed with gratitude for life and unwavering resilience, Diana faced adversity head-on. Her story is a testament to the indomitable strength of the human spirit.

About Diana:

Diana Barnett, a Culinary Institute of America graduate in 1983, has spent her life as a chef, passionately creating dishes and exploring different foods and their unique combinations. Little did she know how much food would become integral to her life and healing journey.

On April 15th, 2018, Diana was unexpectedly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a devastating disease that affects people worldwide. Despite being a healthy, active woman in her 50s with no family history, she faced this health challenge head-on, as she had done throughout her life.

Determined to take control of her health, Diana listened to her body and asked what it needed. She enrolled in the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and graduated as a Health Coach. As her healing journey began, she wrote a book titled "Healthy Food, Happy Me – HOW A DIABETIC CHEF FOUND WISDOM & BALANCE," which includes 25 ingredients that helped her find the right path.

Her lessons of wisdom and balance continue to evolve, but her self-created program, Healing through Food, Mind, Body & Soul, has truly shifted her life in the right direction. Today, Diana is dedicated to teaching, inspiring, and guiding her cli

Send us a text

We’re baaaack!! Our interview with artist and large scale impact social media influencer LaNia Roberts was SO PROFOUND and resonated with so many of you that we just HAD to bring her back! This time, Kristina and LaNia thoroughly unpack an issue that we have all battled with at times: comparing ourselves to others, and why we should draw inspiration from other people’s successes instead of feeling threatened by them.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY! Let go of the fear of being seen and heard.
  • Understand that to live your journey it takes courage. YOU NEED TO HAVE THE COURAGE TO ASK FOR HELP. The support you need will always be there for you.
  • Stop self-sabotaging and instead recognize and build upon your own strengths.
  • See inspiration in others further along in their journey and be inspired by them instead of feeling insecure about yourself.
  • Take small courageous steps. It's in the small steps that the courage is developed to take the larger brave steps.
  • Give yourself permission to LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE.
  • Recognize the spiritual significance of your own ideas and know that YOUR IDEAS ARE YOUR INSPIRATION AND YOUR POWER. It is from here that your greatest self can begin to be realized.
  • Learn that when inspiration strikes, WRITE IT DOWN IMMEDIATELY on paper or on your phone. Otherwise in a few hours you will forget.
  • KEEP GOING! NEVER GIVE UP.

24 Oct 2023Kathrine Switzer, First Woman to Run The Boston Marathon Talks Triumph in Life00:49:36

Send us a text

Inspiring. Motivating. Empowering. This is Kathrine Switzer, the first official woman to run the Boston Marathon. She just wanted to run but ended up being an icon. In the beginning, the goal was just to be on the girls’ field hockey team in high school. But, with the ever-present support of her father, she not only reached that goal, she triumphed over and over, just by having the passion to put one foot in front of the other. From being the fastest girl on the field hockey team, to garnering an audience for girls’ sports for the first time by being a writer for the school newspaper, to training with the all-boys Cross Country team at Syracuse University, her younger years laid the foundation for her work in the spotlight as a women’s and civil rights activist, following her history-making run in the Boston Marathon in 1967. After that, the sky was the limit. She had to keep going…and she did! In this interview, Kathrine shares her awe-inspiring journey from curious girl to strong woman and how she is now giving back to other women worldwide through her non-profit, 261Fearless.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Identify YOUR light!
  • Draw inspiration from Kathrine’s story to triumph over struggles of your own.
  • Understand just how much of an impact that one person CAN have! And realize that that person could very well be YOU!
  • Realize that where there is a ‘no’, there is more than likely an alternative. Find it!
  • Comprehend just how important it is to be self-aware. Life gives you moments to choose to be brave…or not. Choose bravery!
  • Know that life’s greatest relationships and experiences can come as a result of forgiveness.
  • Comprehend that everyone has moments of discouragement. It’s how you bounce back that determines what you’re made of.

About Kathrine

Iconic athlete, sports and social advocate, author, and Emmy award-winning television commentator, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to officially enter and run the Boston Marathon. She has completed 40 marathons and won the New York City Marathon in 1974. She went on to create and direct the Avon International Running Circuit, a program of 400 womens'-only races in 27 countries that eventually reached over 1 million women and led to the inclusion of the women’s marathon in the Olympic Games in 1984. Switzer is also a TV commentator and has covered the Olympics, World and National Championships and many major marathons, including 37 consecutive commentaries of the Boston Marathon. She is the author of three books including the popular memoir, Marathon Woman. Switzer has been honored widely for her achievements, most recently being inducted into the USA National Women’s Hall of Fame for creating positive social change. In 2015, she co-founded

28 Nov 2023Purpose: A Lifetime of Growth and Change with Karen Olsen Hall00:45:56

Send us a text

Let your soul be soothed by the calming voice of Karen Olsen Hall, host of the empowering podcast, The Hero Within Podcast. She and Kristina bring story after story, little win after big win of reasons why one must never give up on oneself, no matter what the circumstances want us to believe. Being born 2 ½ months premature and presumed not to survive, adversity began at birth for Karen. So did the grit! Due to her prematurity, her nervous system didn’t develop properly, leaving her incapable of regulating her emotions and feeling things very deeply. She became an empath…her mother became her biggest cheerleader! When she was terrified of something, her mother counteracted that by encouraging her to do something that would tackle that fear and push her out of that comfort zone. This and her relationship with God developed throughout her childhood and teenage years and has laid the foundation for the path that led to her career. Today, she lovingly coaches people through turning their adversity into purpose and helping them thrive beyond their pain.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Identify grit and resilience within yourself
  • Understand that what someone else days DOES NOT determine your truth!
  • Know that EVERYONE is meant to thrive!
  • Realize that sensitivity DOES NOT equal weakness!
  • Understand that doing the brave thing often means leaning into your fears
  • Accept that growth and change is a lifelong process
  • Listen to that spark…that light inside of you! It’ll guide you through the unknown of your life.
  • Keep going, no matter what! Keep getting up, no matter how hard you get knocked down!

About Karen

Karen absolutely loves helping people!  She has always been a nurturer, which led her to become a registered dietitian and to volunteer and serve for years helping others in need. For decades, she had been life coaching on health, wellness, nutrition, weight loss, and lactation. But then she decided that her real love was coaching on parenting, nervous system regulation, and relationships. Having experienced adversity and loss in her own life, she wanted to share the things she learned and help others avoid suffering the way she did. As a result of her direct training and certification as a life coach with Marianne Williamson, she helps others feel empowered to transform their pain into purpose. She has also completed additional advanced training in life coaching and emotional intelligence. What she loves most about her job is helping people achieve clarity, gain confidence, and feel empowered to transcend pain into purpose and return to a place of love.

02 Jan 2024Beyond Courage: An Intimate Conversation with Kristina Driscoll and Lianne McAughey00:48:50

Send us a text

Today's episode holds a special place in my heart, as it's my late husband's birthday and the first anniversary of the She’s Brave Podcast! We will delve into an intimate conversation I had with Lianne McAughey, the brilliant host of 'The Spiritual Shiftworker.' Our discussion revolves around courage, a trait that isn't always about roaring like a lion but sometimes about mustering the strength to face another day.

We explore themes of bravery and authenticity, reflecting on a transformative trip to Cambodia, where I was fortunate to make a meaningful impact. We also discuss the keys to happiness, the power of intuition, the importance of serving others, and the search for purpose.

If you're curious about my personal journeys and insights, this uplifting episode will be a treat. My aim with this podcast is to spotlight women who've achieved great things and weathered life's storms. Together, we discover tools for resilience and authenticity, encouraging each other to stay true to ourselves and make decisions based on our needs rather than external expectations.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Discover your inner wisdom and intuition for personal growth.
  • Forge your unique path to fulfillment and happiness.
  • Fill your own cup to live a more meaningful life.
  • Prioritize self-care and nurture your needs for a balanced life.
  • Embrace self-discovery and intuition for a more fulfilling journey.

Kristina welcomes Gretchen Witt, founder of Cookies for Kids Cancer, on this incredibly inspiring episode.  Gretchen has been interviewed on The Today Show and profiled in The Wall Street Journal as well as CNN, Good Morning America, Oprah Magazine and The Huffington Post; recognized as one of Woman’s Day magazine’s 50 “Women Who Are Changing the World”, and named the National Honoree in L’Oreal’s Women of Worth awards as well as several other national awards. In 2011, Gretchen added author to her list of accomplishments with the release of the Cookies for Kids’ Cancer Best Bake Sale Cookbook which became a bestseller on Amazon and All the Good Cookies Cookbook.

Gretchen shares her emotional journey after her son, Liam, was diagnosed with cancer at age two. After discovering that pediatric cancer was hugely underfunded, Gretchen organized a massive bake-a-thon, resulting in 96,000 cookies and $420,000 for pediatric cancer research. The conversation discusses the importance of funding pediatric cancer research (which to this day continues to be underfunded), the impact of grassroots events, and Gretchen's dedication to fulfilling Liam's legacy. The organization has GRANTED OVER $21 MILLION to pediatric cancer research, and Gretchen emphasizes the need for continued support.

Against all odds of what should be possible, every cookie sold in a matter of days, and more than $420,000 was raised. In September 2008, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer launched as a year-round, national organization.

As the organization grows, Gretchen’s story of love and determination to impact change inspires people across the country.

This episode is the first of a three-part series where Varuni shares her journey of hitting rock bottom, regaining her identity, and finding happiness.

Varuni begins by discussing her privileged yet chaotic upbringing in India. She talks about her parents, who were university professors from different caste backgrounds, and the liberal and evolved household they maintained. Despite this, Varuni faced familial challenges, often acting as the glue that held her family together.

The conversation transitions to her complicated courtship and marriage to her husband, a stroke surgeon. Varuni’s unique matchmaking experience involved a traditional mountain prophecy which accurately described the man she would marry. Her eventual marriage led her to move from India to Detroit, where she encountered severe cultural changes and social isolation as she adapted to a new life.

Varuni explains the complexities of the immigration system, particularly the limitations and struggles arising from her spousal visa, which initially barred her from working. Despite these challenges, she pursued a career in journalism and succeeded in obtaining jobs, though faced a hostile work environment that deeply affected her mental health and self-esteem.

The episode concludes with a cliff hanger. We hope you'll join us Thursday for the second installment of this 3-part series. Join Kristina and Varuni as they delve into these raw and inspiring stories of overcoming tremendous obstacles, navigating immigration, and finding personal strength.

In part 2 of 3 of this multi-episode conversation with author Varuni Sinah, she narrates a pivotal moment in her life when she confronted her CEO about being fired.

Varuni describes her challenging work dynamics, her employment struggles that followed. She provides a candid look into the ensuing depression, the pressures to maintain family traditions, and how this period contributed to a significant identity crisis.

The discussion shifts to capture her perseverance despite constant setbacks, eventually leading to a deep depression marked by severe self-neglect and alcoholism, further straining her marriage.

Evocatively, Varuni shares an extraordinary subway encounter with a homeless man whose words made her realize her negative behavior towards her husband. This encounter, coupled with her husband's heartfelt plea and temporary move to Los Angeles for a job, propelled Varuni towards self-healing.

Her journey towards recovery saw her engaging with the city’s vibrant life through street photography and volunteer teaching at the Bowery Mission, where she found profound connections with children. These experiences helped her rediscover purpose and meaning in her life.

The episode doesn't shy away from discussing the COVID-19 pandemic's impact, recounting Varuni’s husband’s heroic efforts as a stroke surgeon in New York City. Kymber Maulden Bio:
Kymber Maulden is a women's nutrition consultant and Somatic trauma coach who takes a dynamic approach to women's health. She integrates somatic parts work and attachment coaching, NARM principles for addressing CPTSD, and applied neurology into her private nutrition work to offer women a well-rounded and deep set of tools for addressing their long-term health & lifestyle needs. Her healing philosophy also caters to women as biologically distinct from men, which she believes to be crucially important in today's climate, which lacks female-driven research in health sciences and, in the name of equality, often pressure women into behaviors and lifestyles that don't serve their unique female physiology or psycho-spiritual needs.
