CONTENT WARNING: This is a tender episode that discusses sexual trauma and the steps we are taking to heal ourselves. Please skip this episode if it does not serve your body.

Welcome to SEX ED FOR YOU with Lauren & Holland: Where research meets reality! On our second episode we dive right into a discussion about our recent Hemlock Book Club where we discussed Elizabeth Lesser’s book, Cassandra Speaks: When Women Are the Storytellers, the Human Story Changes!

Holland and I ask questions about blame, power, and what would happen if women told the stories! If you would like to know more about our HEMLOCK MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM, click here: https://sexedforyou.com/hemlock

Holland defines blame as disgust in her body. Which leaves us wondering how YOU would define blame? At minute 7:25, Lauren asks about the fears we encounter as we step into our power. Does the fear of being liked keep you from stepping into your power?

At minute 10:45 we are privileged enough to hear Holland tell a delicate piece of her story. TW: SA

At minute 11:50 Holland shares a recent term she learned: DROP. Commonly used in BDSM and Kink communities, it refers to the time AFTER a scene or experience when the body’s system stops producing morphine-like drugs, and as the parasympathetic nervous system kicks in again. One may feel a deep exhaustion, a sharp drop in temperature, as well as incoherence and un-coordination. The symptoms of drop will generally set in within 24-72 hours after an intense experience in which endorphins and adrenaline received a spike and thus will result in a crash with symptoms reminiscent of depression. For more information please follow: https://www.instagram.com/mx.sizzle_/

Holland shares the symbolism behind her tattoo, (check out the photo at minute 19:50!!) and the why behind her healing rituals. We discuss the power of differentiation and how so many things can be medicine or poison! The act of creating can redeem.

Holland expounds on how writing poetry has been a healing modality in this season of healing and Lauren remembers how she learned to write haiku poetry in her Healing Rituals class in school!

Lauren recently completed a healing ritual to release herself from specific misogynistic wounds. She shares what she wore, what she wrote, the responsibility it forced her to take for her own narrative.

Holland shares a little about Stockholm syndrome and how she identifies with some of the symptoms she identifies with.

Moving from survivor to thriver can be such a powerful choice for anyone who has been harmed - but it can ONLY be done when we are ready.

Make sure to listen at minute 42:20 for the most BEAUTIFUL line from Holland’s poem!

Pain can be pleasurable and Holland is looking forward to it! This tattoo is bringing Holland from Powerless to POWERFUL.

22 Nov 2023F*ck the Myths00:49:05

In this episode, Lauren and Holland delve into the biopsychosocial approach that defines our work. Our conversation centers on the often-overlooked nuances of addressing issues like vaginismus, dyspareunia, and various vulva-related concerns. We explore the unfortunate tendency to label these conditions without engaging in meaningful discussions with patients, highlighting the need for a more holistic understanding.

The episode delves into empowering practices that individuals can adopt at home to holistically confront these challenges, emphasizing the importance of cultivating a positive relationship with one's own vulva. Lauren and Holland discuss the pervasive shame associated with vulvas, shedding light on society's limited exposure to unaltered representations of their beauty. We underscore the pivotal role this plays in reshaping the narrative surrounding women's bodies, promoting a perspective that recognizes them as resilient, stunning, and deserving of adoration.

Adding a unique dimension to the conversation, Holland shares her insights on distinguishing between phallic and non-phallic love scenes, offering a thought-provoking exploration of intimacy. Holland also opens up about her personal experience with dyspareunia, bravely unraveling the myth of the "tight p*ssy" and how it perpetuated her struggle for years. This candid discussion challenges preconceptions and contributes to a broader conversation about dismantling harmful stereotypes, fostering empathy, and embracing the diverse beauty inherent in every individual's experience.

Lastly, we discuss the importance of self-care, especially during stressful or uncertain times, and how comprehensive sexuality education is crucial for informed decision-making, empowerment, and overall well-being.

03 Jul 2024Submission in Partnership, The Bachelor, and Polyamory00:56:39

In this episode of Sex Ed For You: Where Research Meets Reality, Lauren and I start off by watching a recent reel post by Madion Prewitt, a former contestant on the Bachelor. This video started a conversation on submission within partnership, division of labor in households, and the importance of respecting your partner. We also dive into why the Bachelor/ette dating shows not only don’t work, but also are a horrible representation of polyamory; glorifying an unbalanced model of what can be a really healthy approach to consensual non-monogamy. We touch on the topic of mind-reading in relationships and how it’s important to communicate your needs; not just expect a partner to know them off the bat. Last but not least, we emphasize the importance of NOT putting sex on a pedestal; relationships are so so much more than just a p*nis and a v*gina.

11 Oct 2023Debut Episode!00:55:19

Welcome to SEX ED FOR YOU with Lauren & Holland: Where research meets reality! The podcast for people who want to date and have great sex that is safe, fun, and enjoyable. Empowering our listeners to make informed decisions that lead to values-based living.

On this debut episode we discuss the “why” behind this podcast from our various points of view and how we imagine the research will meet reality!

We firmly believe that research only tells one part of the story. We all deserve to make informed decisions of our very own and discover the results of our choices. Sometimes they align with the research - sometimes they do not!  We truly hope this podcast allows you to learn and laugh!

Holland really wanted this episode to be more than an introduction! So, you are welcome in advance for the hilarious stories of dates and sexual encounters that were less than great!!!

Lauren tells her “pick a color” story that will leave you in stitches, followed by Holland’s “chainsaw man” catfish disaster! Then Lauren closes us out with her “menstrual disk gone” wrong in Manhattan moment!

We hope you enjoy this first episode and our hilarious and cringey stories that include quotes like “it was as if the clitoris does not exist.”

Join us as we candidly discuss the different phases of the menstrual cycle, shedding light on the often misunderstood aspects and sharing practical advice on how to embrace each stage with grace and self-care. Holland opens up about her own poignant and unforgettable experience—an intensely painful cycle from the month she moved to Virginia. Her story underscores the challenges many individuals face during their menstrual cycles, emphasizing the importance of compassion and self-care.

Throughout the episode, we emphasize the significance of shifting your perspective on the menstrual cycle. We encourage listeners to embrace the fluidity and dynamism of their cycles, urging them to let go of preconceived notions and instead approach their periods with an open mind. We believe that understanding the cycle's shifts and nuances can empower individuals to navigate their lives more harmoniously.

04 Dec 2024The Intersection of Religion & Sexuality00:48:56

In this episode, we discuss the all too often overlooked intersection of religion, specifically Christianity, and sexuality. Because our primary clientele are folks who have some sort of history with religion, we find it deeply important to cover this topic with nuance and care. We dive into Rev. Bev’s "Sex Is Good!" series and tackle questions such as: Who does my body belong to? What is safety-seeking behavior? What is embedded theology? And how to navigate working with educators who hold different belief systems from their clients?

29 Nov 2023Holiday Hysterics00:54:16

This episode is about all the aspects of holidays– the heartwarming, the challenging, and the transformative. I open up about a pivotal moment in my life; my first panic attack that happened during a tense family gathering. It was a moment that changed my perspective on mental health and family dynamics forever. Sharing this vulnerable experience reminds us that it's okay not to be okay, especially during the holidays.

Lauren's story about her recent beach vacation and using play to renegotiate trauma is simply inspiring. Her journey teaches us that healing can come in unexpected ways and empowers us to explore our own paths towards healing and resilience.

We take a thought-provoking turn in the conversation when Lauren asks: Can you change someone's mind? We dive into the complexities of opinions, family dynamics, and the challenges of shifting perspectives, especially during holiday gatherings.

Navigating through family interactions during the holidays can sometimes be tricky. Lauren and I share practical advice on how to respond to inappropriate questions or comments from family members while maintaining personal boundaries and respect.

And when it comes to kids' safety during the holidays, it's paramount. We discuss valuable tips on ensuring a safe environment and fostering open communication channels. Empowering kids to trust their intuition around extended family members becomes a crucial aspect of holiday safety.

24 Apr 2024Conversations About Consent00:58:52

This episode starts off with our quick anecdote to one of our listeners who said they don’t like our new intro: WE SEE YOU, truly! & say, pls feel free to skip it! This sets up the most amazing conversation about consent. I (Holland) found a Reddit post the other day written by a father about his daughter disclosing her discomfort around an adult in her life. This conversation is nuanced in so many ways and opens up the floor for Lauren and I to talk about the fact that abuse does not have just one face. We talk about signs of abuse and quite a few preventative measures you can take to help keep your kids safe! We may be beating a dead horse with a stick on this one, but AGAIN, conversations and communication can save lives. Lauren gives a few examples of how she’s created a safe container for her kid to come to her with vulnerable topics, conversations you can have about consent, and a game you can play with kids to model consent. We open up the conversations to other consent related topics like the Me Too movement and Dr. Betty Martin’s Wheel of Consent. Hope you all enjoy! Love, H

From really difficult menstrual cycles to surviving abuse, we truly believe that everything we’ve each been through has purpose in the greater tapestry of humanity. I touch on my Oura Ring with a little insight on how I manage my cycle tracking. Lauren gives us a quick run down of the importance of the lovely Capricorn moon we all experienced on the weekend of July 21; how deeply this moon affected both of us is so cool! We spend the final half of the podcast discussing the power of our favorite phrase and how it so accurately described my previous weekend– notice, trust, and value your needs, wants, and desires. Love always! H

07 Feb 2024New York, New York!01:11:26

In this episode, Lauren and I talk through all the amazing experiences we had in New York. We had a beautiful gathering our first night there; toured the Met, the Museum of Sex, and Stonewall, saw a show off Broadway, and enjoyed stand-up at the Comedy Cellar. Lauren spoke on a panel about sex and relationship during menopause, then we rounded up the trip with a day in Brooklyn, visiting fun stores, cafes, and cherished friends. On the train ride back, we had one of the most productive and enlightening brainstorming sessions everrrr. Hope you enjoy! Love, H

13 Dec 2023Lines in the Sand00:47:14

This is a tender episode that Lauren and I made in response to an anonymous question we received the week prior. This brave person reached out to us asking for advice about their decision to have first intercourse within their current relationship. The original anonymous question is read aloud for the audience, but the additional context provided by our brave friend is kept out of the episode.

We first build a container that we feel lays the foundation of the following conversation: our backgrounds, our perspectives, and our shortcomings– i.e. we haven’t met this person, and only know a few details of the situation. From there, Lauren and I give our own stories relating to first intercourse and we try to give our friend tools they can use to analyze their own situation from a sex-positive, consent based perspective. We also follow the situation through – if this disagreement about intercourse ended in a breakup; what would that look like? We discuss what our friend can do to support themselves in a way that honors the bravery of their decision to stand on their values, yet also acknowledges the pain of a breakup.

Episode 10 is heartfelt, tender, and real. Thank you for trusting us with your question, friend. You are so worthy, so loved, so kind.

21 Feb 2024The Bisexual Agenda00:47:35

Lauren and I talk a little bit about what bisexuality looks like on a deeper level than is typically spoken about in day to day conversations. I give my own perspectives and lived experiences of bisexuality, coming out, and the lifelong journey of learning that I’ve come to appreciate. We bring up a few really interesting topics; like the fact that the LGBTQIA+ community is, at its core, a system and what that means for queer folk as we pave the way for generations to come. This conversation is so fun and interesting, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg; so we encourage you to do your own research, find sources that feel good to you and immerse yourself in supportive and loving communities and conversations.

Hope you enjoy! H :)

Lauren and I discuss the importance of individuation, developmental age markers, and aligning your longings with potential partners. We give light to the fun aspects of fantasy that enrapt many people fascinated with a person who’s much older or younger than they are and encourage listeners to use their common sense when faced with such situations. We also have a candid conversation about making passing comments in public to people you find attractive and the right vs wrong ways to do so.

TW: Sexual Assault

To start this episode I gave a much-anticipated recap of my weekend to Lauren, so y’all could see her very hilarious reactions to my antics and analyses of a chaotic party that I attended. Then, you get to hear the story of how my upbringing in Reformed Presbyterianism is quite different from Lauren’s. I talk about how it affected my values and my approach to early life and why I no longer subscribe to the religion.

Love, H

08 Nov 2023Values, Vulvas, & OhNuts, Oh My!01:02:11

Welcome to SEX ED FOR YOU with Lauren & Holland: Where Research Meets Reality! In episode 5, Lauren & Holland quickly discuss what it looks like to do power differently and allow the mess of humanity. In a world where everyone is on social media and our lives are so public, we encourage ourselves and others to remain authentic. This leads us to talk about the importance of establishing sexual values and what we think is influencing Holland’s generation (Zillenials) and those younger than she.

The anatomy and physiology of vulvas is an important topic we feel isn’t often discussed, so we talk about what arousal looks like, why penetrative intercourse can be painful, and our own experiences with pelvic floor issues. Lauren offers positions to try that can help reduce and avoid pain.

Finally, Lauren regales us with her story of the missing OhNut, which will leave you in tears of laughter.

14 Feb 2024Want to Want More Sex?00:29:30

This episode covers the question we hear MOST often: "I want to want to have more sex." What does it mean to want to want more sex? Do you really just not want the sex you're having right now? What kind of sex do you really want to have?

Lauren and I talk about the motivations behind this statement and what we, as sex educators, think could be better questions to ask yourself before aiming just to have more sex.

13 Mar 2024Embracing Seasonal Growth00:27:00

This episode is all about transitioning seasons and periodically checking in with self. What does it mean to gently move from one season to the next and how does one do that without losing all sense of self? What does it look like to end friendships as we outgrow them? We discuss how good intentions don’t negate harm done and how we each have learned to take accountability in hard situations. Listen along as Lauren and I discuss all the implications of seasonal growth.

10 Apr 2024Navigating Fantasy01:01:41

In this episode, we draw parallels between the iconic One Tree Hill marriage and the intricacies of harmful sexual behaviors, shedding light on hidden misogyny within anti-porn rhetoric. We confront the phenomenon of women pitted against women and the all-too-common expectation of male "failure" when it comes to porn, while honoring the harm that trust and deceit play in this conversation. We discuss the importance of compassionately loving ourselves to heal past traumas by exploring the cornerstones of eroticism which help to integrate adrenaline, fantasy, and pleasure into our healing journey. I lament about the societal destruction of creativity and play-pretend in adulthood, advocating for relearning fantasy and embracing creativity. Lauren and I also tackle the taboo topic of communicating with partners about pornography, and emphasize the importance of recognizing the intricate production behind pornographic content. Join us as we navigate these complex issues with empathy, insight, and a commitment to understanding and growth.

Love always, H.

27 Nov 2024How to Be Good At Sex01:13:57

You asked, we answered. Today’s episode tackles the following 4 questions:

  • Why is there such value placed on the idea of virginity, yet sexual skills are still expected?

  • How do you establish boundaries in a relationship surrounding sex?

  • How can you manage and help a lowered libido due to antidepressants or hormonal medication?

  • How do you become good at sex?

This conversation was so much fun and so informative. We tackle all these questions with the now expected levels of nuance and guidance with tons of resources for you. See below for an abundance of information, resources, and a free download!

16 Oct 2024Loving the You that You Hate00:50:13

The reality of life is that you have a body. And sometimes, because of a myriad of reasons– ie society, body dysmorphia, etc– there are days where we just hate our bodies. This is truly a universal experience and I hope this episode both equips you with tools to use on those hard days and shows you that you are not alone in this. The conversation today centers around honoring your emotions then making the active decision to help move yourself from a place of disgust with self to a place of appreciation.

17 Apr 2024Learning the Art of Choice00:55:17

This episode is about the importance of learning the art of choice. We sat down for this episode with no particular topic in mind and out came this conversation about how the lack of autonomy and choice making skills in adolescence deeply affect your ability to choose later in life. We empower listeners (and ourselves) to make cognizant decisions about who we surround ourselves with and to critically examine how those people impact our perspectives on life. The entire conversation highly relates to Dr. Betty Martin’s Wheel of Consent and her book The Art of Receiving and Giving.

20 Dec 2023Stop the Stigma00:59:15

In this episode, I open up about my journey with STIs and how being tested after a sexual assault encounter was a crucial turning point for me. I share my experience with testing and treatment, highlighting the importance of sexual health. This topic is difficult, but so so important for anyone who is sexually active. I hope you see a new perspective on STIs after listening along to this episode.

Lauren and I have an eye-opening discussion comparing STIs to something we're more familiar with, like strep throat. We break down the truth that the danger of STIs lies in leaving infections untreated. We also shine a light on what treatment looks like – from antibiotic pills to shots – shedding light on the straightforward but vital process.

Speaking from my own experience with treatment and testing, I emphasize the importance of being proactive about your sexual health. We dive into the responsibility we have in notifying our sexual partners if we receive a positive test result. Communication is key, and it's a crucial part of safeguarding everyone's well-being.

Sex Ed For You isn't just about information – it's about empowerment. Lauren and I infuse this discussion with real experiences, laughter, and most importantly, a supportive atmosphere. We're here to dismantle stigma, educate, and encourage everyone to take charge of their sexual health with confidence.

For those who are curious, the testing ended up costing $45 at my local health department & they gave me tons of free, non-latex condoms! ;)

Love, Holland

20 Mar 2024The Chaos of Reality01:06:08

This episode is truly all over the place. We start off with a bang, talking about my most recent experience with my queerness and exploring what it means to me, and why labels feel relatively daunting. Then, we talk about Jennifer Aniston’s scene from “He’s Just Not That Into You,” where the person she’s been partnered with for years refuses to marry her, and we dive into all the facets of life that are quite literally just made up by humans– the government, money, and time. We talk about the nuances of these institutions and how they affect our lives. As both Lauren and I just finished watching our favorite reality TV love shows, Couple to Throuple and Love is Blind, respectively, we touch on the power of knowledge and permission (also, did you know Lauren was on a reality TV show??). Then, at the end of the episode, I tacked on a short 15 minute clip that we filmed last week after a chaotic day of filming.

Love always!!! H

In this episode, Lauren and I talk about aligning your sexual preferences and longings with partners; both early in relationship, and in long-term relationships. We bring up some fun memories – The Rice Purity test and the BDSM test, which we see as fun launching pads to good conversations.

Y’all, Lauren and I ran to the podcast chairs as soon as Bridgerton Season 3 came out. No S3 spoilers here, but if you haven’t seen S1 & S2 then you should probably watch those first. ;) This conversation was all about the erotic themes of the Bridgerton love stories we’ve seen so far: Daphne + Simon, Anthony + Kate, and the long awaited Pen + Colin. Lauren and I talk through our own favorite scenes from the show and which erotic themes are most common. We touch on the topic of sexualization and how sex is used to manipulate in control in the show. Lauren brings up Julia Quinn’s background and how her dynamic with romance books deeply influences the Bridgerton story. Last but not least, we talk through implementing core erotic themes into real life in healthy ways! Love always, H!

25 Oct 2023Communication in Early Partnership00:52:37

Welcome to Sex Ed For You: Where Research Meets Reality. The theme of episode 3 is communication; the main idea-- who are you, what do you want, where have you been, and where do you want to go? Lauren and I briefly discuss substance use and how it can effect partnership and compatibility. We agree that substance use and abuse are one of the most important things to discuss when considering partnership with someone! For information on codependency, we recommend: Codependent No More by Melody Beattie. We also talk about how Lauren and I react when digesting information or difficult conversations. Typically, people will deeply desire one of three things: solitude, silence, or stillness. This conversation leads us to consider what it's like dating though a trauma-informed lens, as some people struggle to understand another's inherent need for one of those three things: solitude, silence, and stillness. Then, H gives Lauren and the audience 20 questions to ask a potential partner. Here's the link to download that list for free (valid until Nov 1)! We also discuss what it looks like to shift your perspective on dating for fulfillment and dating to add to an already joyful and fulfilled life: a life where you love yourself enough to not depend on the love of another. Lastly, Lauren and I lament the feeling of being "too much" for people, both romantically and platonically. Lauren shares that her partner and husband, Trey, is the first to truly affirm her "too much-ness." For more information on doing power differently, we recommend Cassandra Speaks by Elizabeth Lesser.

06 Mar 2024The Breakup Breakdown00:57:16

This episode was inspired by an Instagram Reel that very beautifully and cinematically showed the breakup process. Lauren and I tackled this topic full speed ahead– what does it mean to communicate your desires within a relationship for more expansive partnership? What does it look like to be the villain in someone else’s story? How do we become okay with being the main character in our own story?

01 Nov 2023Fully Enough + Only Enough00:28:16

Welcome to SEX ED FOR YOU with Lauren & Holland: Where Research Meets Reality! On our fourth episode, Lauren and I lean heavily into the reality aspect of this podcast. The day we recorded this episode was the day we launched this podcast, and boy were we exhausted!

Not only were we overwhelmed with the details of launching, but we both were facing hardships in our personal lives as well. We discuss the aftermath of a triggering event, the therapeutic effect, and being torn between emotions and logic.

Here are the authors + books we mentioned throughout the episode: adrienne marie brown, Cassandra Speaks by Elizabeth Lesser and Codependent No More by Melody Beattie

30 Dec 2024They're Not Done Cooking... How Does Early Education Impact Adult Relationships?00:56:49

Have you ever met someone in their early twenties and found it impossible to connect? Or caught yourself cringing at a young couple’s codependency? If so, this episode is for you! We kick things off by discussing age-appropriate sex education for kids—essential lessons that lay the groundwork for understanding relationships, consent, self-advocacy, and body autonomy. From there, we explore how common relationship stereotypes often stem from a lack of these foundational lessons and examine how this gap impacts adult relationships today.

06 Dec 2023Dating a Dog00:59:16

We kick things off with a pact—a pact to change the narrative. Lauren and I recognize that in relationships, it's all too easy to focus on the negatives. So, we're committing to sharing the positives about our partners, shifting the conversation to celebrate the good stuff.

Lauren and I talk about relationship stereotypes, and different ways we’ve seen them play out in real life. We also dive into the complexities of aligning your longings with potential partners. For more on this, watch Episode 3: Communication in Early Partnership

Friendzoning and friends with benefits? We've been there! Lauren and I share our personal experiences and insights. Lauren delves into the importance of setting boundaries in friends with benefits relationships to ensure that both parties are respected.

Lauren discusses relationships of financial convenience and how her first marriage largely fell into that category. And I share my own personal anecdote, highlighting how relationships of convenience can deviate from traditional gender dynamics.

Sex Ed For You is not your average podcast. Lauren and I bring research to the table, infusing it with real-life experiences and laughs. We're here to empower and educate, all while keeping it fun and relatable. Get ready for an upbeat, honest, and informative conversation that'll leave you with a fresh perspective on relationships and a smile on your face. Trust me, you don't want to miss this one!

Love, Holland <3

23 Oct 2024The Sexualization of Halloween00:32:29

In this holiday episode, we ask why Halloween leads to the sexualization of professions such as nursing, firefighting, and, most controversial of all– nuns (nunning? nunnery?). Of course, this leads us back to one of our favorite sources; the circles of sexuality. DOWNLOAD here for free. Truth is, Halloween is just one instance of society writing us all a permission slip to dress however we want, so the question really is– what does it look like to give yourself permission to live your life how you actually want to? We encourage you to look at your personal recipe for a good time (ex. Halloween) and apply it to yourself, your dates, & your free time more often. After all, a recipe is only good if you use it.
