What is Servant Leadership?

Servant Leadership is a set of behaviors and practices that turn the traditional "power leadership" model upside down; instead of the people working to serve the leader, the leader exists to serve the people. When leaders serve first, they unlock purpose and ingenuity in those around them, creating higher performing and happier employees. As servant leaders our purpose si to inpire and equip those we influence. 

We are starting a new series called "What Makes a Good Leader?" where we will investigate what traits, behaviors and practices a good leader needs.  We start this series off defining what a leader is.  Later, we have a look into SLI's first servant leadership behavior "serving first" and the importance of self development.  Enjoy!

Prior to his speaking, writing, and consulting career, Mike was drafted by the New York Yankees out of high school. He turned the Yankees down and instead chose to play baseball at Stanford University, where he pitched in the College World Series. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals out of Stanford and played three seasons of professional baseball in the Royals organization before arm injuries ended his playing career while still in the minor leagues. His fifth book, We're All in This Together: Creating a Team Culture of High Performance, Trust, and Belonging, was just released in April.

Scott F. Paradis is a student of life and seeker of ultimate truth. Believing only once something is made simple can we truly understand, he intends to discern, distill and leverage the fundamentals of enduring wisdom. A native of New Hampshire, Scott concluded a 30+ year career with the United States Army retiring at the rank of colonel. In addition to assignments stateside in Europe and the Middle East he served as a Congressional Fellow with the United States Senate and as a National Security Fellow with the Kennedy School at Harvard University. He holds a Master of Science from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Hampshire. Scott lives with his wife of 34 years "Lisa" in Eagle River, Alaska. A fitness enthusiast he enjoys traveling, outdoor adventures and exploring the backcountry with his 90-pound golden-doodle Rusty. Scott is currently working on his 10th book (a political thriller "Capitol Crimes") and has produced and published multiple audio and audio-visual training programs.

Our episode today is about leading from the middle.  Who is that guy or gal in the middle? He or she walks a balance beam between the senior leader and the individual contributor. In many companies he performs tasks, manages daily activities, and leads all at the same time.
