This time joined by Barrowmaze creator Greg Gillespie, the Fantastic Five (?) review one of the classics of old school gaming: Chaosium’s “All The World’s Monsters” Vol. 1-3. Straight from the heady anything-goes days of the mid-70s, the first volume of this set actually preceded the Monster Manual to publication, providing diehard Original D&D judges with hundreds of inventive and insane monsters with which to kill their players’ hapless characters. Long out of print and once difficult to find, these classic collections from a bygone day are out again in handy PDF format.

This week sees the return of “Attack of the Clones!” with a review of the new retro-clone of the 1974 OD&D set, The Seven Voyages of Zylarthen. The “DMigos” consider the pros, cons, and old school flavor of this new variety of Classic Dungeons & Dragons! Unlike many other clones of the Original Three Little Brown Books, author Oakes Spaulding rejects many of rules from the supplements such as Greyhawk, Blackmoor, et al; to create a core system solely inspired by the White Box and Appendix N literature!

This week we invite award-winning writer, critic, and journalist Ethan Gisldorf onto the podcast to discuss his best-selling book Fantasy Freaks & Gaming Geeks. This year, U-Con in Ypsilanti, MI added an OSR Track to their convention, and one-third of the DMigos was there to cover the action and record the “What is the OSR, Anyway?” panel discussion. While this is often a contentious topic online, host Ryan Thompson and panelists Tim Snider (Goblinoid Games), Adam Muszkiewicz (Metal Gods of Ur-Hadad), Doug Kovacs (Goodman Games), and Jim Wampler (yeah, that guy) were able to discuss the matter with humor and almost no use of the Star Trek original series battle music. From the very beginning of Dungeons & Dragons, one of the biggest complaints about the game is a lack of a skills system. Love it or hate it, its one of those topics that is brought up regardless of edition or year. Not enough skills? Too many? We know DM Mike’s opinions, but on this episode the other two hosts get their turn.
Also the DMigos consider the latest module from Small Niche Games, “The Shrine of St. Aleena.” This homage to the Mentzer Basic D&D set gets the full treatment, with no cleric casualties this time. Honest!

This episode sees the DMigoes taking on the many gods of the Classic D&D game! For much of the beginning of the D&D line, gods were an accepted part of the game. They worked for everything — from sources of clerical magic to evil gods whose followers are to be battled to save the “good” peoples. Starting in 1983, the Mentzer version of the game took a step away from the concept of deities. However, between 1974-1983, deities and perchance their demigods were a major component of the Classic D&D legacy.

Other than perhaps TSR itself, there is no game company from the 1970s that screams “Old School D&D goodness” as much as  Judges Guild. In this episode (and the next!), the DMigoes are joined by current Judges Guild head Bob Bledsaw Jr., as he shares his memories of his father, Judges Guild co-founder Bob Bledsaw Sr. Even as a youngster, Bob was an integral part of his father’s gaming enterprise, and he shares with us his eye witness accounts of the early years of Judges Guild — plus what it was like growing up “Bledsaw.” Apparently in the 1970s, that even involved listening to the Blues Brothers in parked vans after unloading issues of Dungeoneer magazine.
You’ll laugh! You’ll cry! You’ll wonder when Judges Guild will publish Tegel Manor II: The Night of the Living Rumps!

Class Act: Thieves
In this episode DM James and DM Glen slip into back stab position to talk about B/X Thieves in all their incarnations! We start by talking about what makes a thief unique from other classes as well as their place in an adventuring party, then they get devious as they discuss how to use those classic thief abilities in new and dastardly ways. Follow this up with tips for DMs on how to design adventures that appeal to and highlight those abilities for your thief players, ways to customize the thief to suit your campaign, and the complexities a Thieves Guild can bring to your campaign.
They close out by discussing magic items that are of particular use to thieves and highly some particularly stealthy monsters like the Creeper and Invisible Stalker. So get your poison dagger ready and check for traps, it’s Adventure 133 – Class Act: Thieves!
