It's our 100th episode and part 2 of our discussion about Batman The Animated Series.  We've been doing the show for two years and so thankful that we've gotten this far with the help of so many amazing friends.  This week we get into the villains that challenge and ultimately make Batman such an incredible crime fighter and detective.  We're joined by some of our friends as they share their memories from the show.  Enjoy our 100th episode!  Cheers! 

Wouldn't you know it!  We hit a milestone and then get lazy.  Instead of talking cartoons this week, we're releasing some b-sides for you.  What are SMC b-sides you ask?  It's all the jokes and trash that happens BEFORE the show.  It's Sean and Dave acting silly and irreverent!  This week, we have a 20 minute conversation about Parappa the rapper!  When that new mixtape gonna drop?!  No clue.  *fingers crossed*

We're back!  And like a couple of mecha lions forming a giant fight robot, we are ready to defend the universe from the weirdest cartoons around.  Yes, this week we are finally getting into Voltron.  In fact, we are getting into Voltron ALL MONTH LONG.  Does Sean go crazy from bad voice acting?  You betcha.  Does Dave go crazy when the colors of the lions don't match up with the pilots?  You betcha.   In our excitement about the Netflix original series Voltron Legendary Defender, we're watching Voltron shows for the entire month of June.  Check out the 80's American version that brought the franchise stateside on this week's SMC!   

We are back again to form Voltron!  Sean and Dave are joined by our friend Max Nicholson from IGN and Collider to talk the brand new Netflix and Dreamworks show - Voltron: Legendary Defender!  I'm not sure what I can say about this week's episode other than the new Voltron is fantastic and completely binge worthy.   Look for a mid-week extra special episode!

What happens when you give three kids a van, a bucket of paint, and a couple random animals?  Well, of course they begin to follow around California EMS/Firefighters as a "jitney" emergency vehicle.  It all makes sense, right?  We're getting into the animated version of the live action 70's drama Emergency which is called Emergency +4 because there are, maybe, four children that following around Squad 51.  This show makes zero sense to us, but what does make sense is that we have friend of the show Alex Capece joining us because he's a real Firefighter in the District of Columbia.  Hit the "box alarm" because we're all about to learn something on this episode.

WE ARE BACK!  It's January which means only one thing - NEW YEAR'S NICKTOONS!  This is our third year doing New Year's NickToons and we're getting into some interesting territory.  Kicking off 2017 is Oh Yeah! This is a interesting week for us because we are two white men in our 30's watching a cartoon about teenage girls in high school.  How are we going to identify?  How are we going to understand the delicate nature and balance of all these emotional relationships?  To answer your question - we LOVED this show.  Seriously.  No sarcasm.  We really loved every moment of this show and how it handled navigating relationships in high school.  Both Sean and Dave are incredibly impressed by this show and its skill in portraying the nuance of relationships at this stage in life.

This cartoon starts with a lie.  Not just a lie to one or two people but a lie to the entire world except for a handful of military personnel.  The US government has been lying to us about the BIG GUY.  That's right.  He's not a huge robot but rather, it's a robot suit that is worn by a pilot.  A human, honest to goodness, flesh and blood human being, who is tasked with the awesome responsibility of protecting the world.  The nerve!  The treachery!  The idea of decommissioning the Big Guy?  What happens when you scrape one military defense program for another that is...a little too childish, perhaps?  We find out what happens when the Big Guy teams up with Rusty the boy robot for one hell of a patriotic ride.

Gas up your vespa, tune your bass guitar, and prep the huge bandaids for your foreheads because we're getting into FLCL or Fooly Cooly!  What does it mean?  What gives?  Why am I transitioning into a manga style while I'm writing this?  FLCL is 100% bananas and 100% fun.  It's an anime that requires you to sit back and attempt to let it all wash over you.  Under normal cricumstances, the confluence of all these random piece would NOT coalesce into a good show.  BUT FLCL manages to pull it off and does it with such style and grace.  It makes for six extremely imaginative, yet random episodes.

It's May and we LOVE alliteration.  Sean and Dave also love the Marvel Cinematic Universe and with Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 in theaters on May 4, we're dedicating an entire month to Marvel cartoons.  Kicking it off is the GotG gang on Disney XD, which is a little strange because all of the characters are modeled after the live action but this isn't canon with the live action, nor is it supposed to help bridge the gaps between the movies, nor is it supposed to help you understand about Star Lord's dad but it IS a continuation from the first movie...?!  Anyone else confused by this?  So, why does this cartoons exist?  Does it retain the awesome music of the original movie?  Is there humor still there...

What if I told you that we could get every single X-man and X-woman into a cartoon show?  No lie.  What if we packed every single character into one show and then told you we were going to focus on your favorite character like Wolverine.  And then Wolverine ended up being such a secondary character that by the end he was completely unnecessary?  Yeah, you'd then have Wolverine and the X-men, which should have been called Emma Frost fights to get the Dark Phoenix power for 26 episodes.  It's a show that is not to be missed (actually you can 100% skip this cartoon).  Go back and jus watch the 90's cartoon.  100% shade right now.

Marvel May has been pretty rough so far.  Gurdains (a reviewers spelling not ours) of the Galaxy and Wolverine and the X-men; two shows that are very polarizing and based off of successful IP.  This week we get into BET's motion comic - Black Panther and wow, does it shine as a beacon of hope for this month.  Complex plot with a multitude of characters,  brutal combat sequences, gritty imagery, and it's a motion comic?  Usually a motion comic would take us out of our focus when trying to watch a cartoon but this is done better that 90% of the cartoons we've watched.  Great execution on this show which only lasted six episodes.

We are back with more radioactive spider blood this week and a catchy theme song to boot!  *twap* We are finishing up Marvel May with the original animated series of the wall-crawler in all of his psychedelic glory.  A couple confusing things - 1) Peter Parker sounds A LOT older than a teenager, 2) Some of these villains are not canon, 3) season three was considered to be "too influenced by drugs" thanks to Ralph Bakshi.  This original cartoon spider-man has some high points when the villains are relatable but what does the SMC gang think of the ice men from Pluto?  or the footage taken from Rocket Robin Hood?  *twap*

What if you were to rip off both Marvel and DC comics in an attempt to do something interesting and new?  But instead of new and interesting, all of your designs ended up looking like it came from a super hero recycling program?  AND then Marvel purchased all of you IP, attempted to merge it into their universe, and then lit your trash up in a dumpster fire?  The end product?  Well, it's Ultraforce, of course.  The fact that the title has "force" in it really hits home how "forced" this entire series actually feels.  It's essentially "Ultra-copy-paste."  Thankfully, our guest, Evan Valentine, joins us in the pain!   (The only bonus is that there is a drug episode.)

Continuing with our different format for June, Sean and Dave are talking about current cartoons that they've been watching; Steven Universe and Attack on Titan.  These two shows actually have a lot in common - 1) strong coming of age story, 2) a hero learning to use new powers, 3)  and story with a lot of foreshadowing.  Yes, Steven Universe and Attack on Titan are almost the same thing, despite the gruesome nature of AoT and the fun loving emotional tone of Steven Universe.  You could almost do a mash up and have Attack on Universe?  Steven Titan?  All of this and what's inside Eren's dad's basement are discussed and revealed (jk, it's probably a VHS tape like in SU's Lion 3 - Straight to Video).

"Take Frank Castle, the Punisher, and multiply him by 1000," is Evan Valentine's assessment of our the hero in Berserk, named Guts.  Guts is beaten and betrayed by those close to him, and then to further add insult to injury, he's haunted by evil spirits that prevent him from sleeping.  The psychological makeup of this hero, really an anti-hero, is fascinating when you realize that Guts is seriously driven.  Driven by vengeance, love, and hate of his enemies and the singlular goal to crush them with a sword that is taller than him.

SMC is kicking off three weeks of Star Wars, leading up to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens!  Our first installment is Star Wars: Ewoks.  How does a show hold up when you remove all of the fun "force" related ideas and have a cartoon that almost solely centers around the Ewoks? This is SMC's FINAL week of our journey to a galaxy far far away!  This week we're Force jumping into Star Wars: Rebels with Darth Max Nicholson from IGN, MTV, and Collider.com.  The show is set after episode III and five years before episode IV A New Hope begins.  If the design of the show feels a little different (very thin lightsabers and Zeb sort of resembles a Wookie), then it's because they used Ralph McQuarrie's original concept art that was developed back in the 70's.    Enjoy our final week of Star Wars cartoons and enjoy the premiere this week of Star Wars: The Force Awakens!  May the Force be with you!

Hey there KaBlamoids!  Did you have a good NYE?!  We hope so because it's Dave and Sean's favorite time of the year; NEW YEAR'S NICKTOONS.  This is the second installment and we can't wait to dig into these cartoon classics, starting off with KaBlam!  Part variety show, part comic book, and all crazy town.  KaBlam! brought us such classics as; Action League Now!, Bob and Prometheus, Life with Loopy, and Sniz and Fondue!  Buckle up, for a KaBlamie time.  

Move it, FOOTBALL HEAD!  Sean and Dave are continuing their second week of our New Year's Nicktoons series with Hey Arnold!.  The episode that we watch this week is a little bit of a departure from the normal series and should have been the series finale.  We watched the 5th season episode "The Journal" that talks about Arnold's parents and the story of how he was born.  It's touching, a little sad, and will leave you with 100 questions!  So, kick back on your stoop and relax with this weeks episode of Hey Arnold! 

It never seems that Norbert and Daggett ever really get, truthfully, "angry" in a show that includes the word in the title.  It's really not more than childish behavior and/or a slap fight; standing sibling rivalry.  Dave and Sean build a damn dam in week three of our ongoing New Year's Nicktoons saga with "The Angry Beavers."  We landed on an episode that placed Norb and Dag into a B horror film with Oxnard Montalvo (the beaver's hero) and a cast that includes a Toluca Lake, Man Servante, and all of the monsters from the evil of Dark Pool that you can imagine!  Buckle up and let your imaginations run wild and try not to let your brains get snatched by an object from another dimension that feed on the very fabric of time and space!

We are wrapping up the second installment of our month long New Year's Nicktoons with CatDog.  Do you like Cats?  Do you like Dogs?  Do you like David Cronenberg style body horror?  Then get ready for CatDog!  I'm not even sure where to go with this one.  Both Sean and Dave had a difficult time watching two things that are awesome independently (cats and dogs), yet are horrible when fused together at the waist.  Double oy. 

This week Sean and Dave have invited Allison Keene and Melanie Harker to watch an episode of Ultimate Spider-Man where Deadpool guest stars.  How many times will the show Ultimate Spider-man break the 4th wall?  How many times will Spider-man and Deadpool avoid using "the k-word?"  How many chimichangas will we serve over the course of this episode?  (hint: a lot!)  Get ready to delve into the world of "the merc with a mouth" and get excited as Ryan Reynolds continues to make fun of his previous super hero attempts on the big screen!   

We're continuing our February super hero theme month with Static Shock.  Dave was down and out with the "sickness" (probably a Zombie or the Disturbed song), so Jamal Newman and Melanie Harker join Sean.  Sean had no idea that Static was based on a comic book character, Jamal laments that he was a baby in the 90's, and Melanie asserts that she's a renown expert on time travel.  Surprisingly, we picked a very emotional episode of this series where the writers did an amazing job showing our heroes vulnerable side through the flashback of Static losing his mother.  Things take a twist when that flashback become reality and Static gets his wish to see his mom again when he meets a "Bang Baby" with the power to control time.  Does Static change the past?  By interacting with the past, does it change the future outcome?  Is time travel in a cartoon really confusing?  (Yup, it's super confusing)  All of this and more on this weeks SMC featuring Static Shock!  

Thankfully, we live in a world where Zoid battles have been regulated.  At SMC we can't even begin to believe a world where Zoids aren't regulated, which is why we've brought back Jamal Newman to discuss proper upkeep and maintenance.  Zoids is about a young hot head pilot, named Bit Cloud, who pilots a special Zoid named Liger Zero.  What's the relationship between man and machine?  Should the Blitz Team change the name of these team to something cute and adorable? And why is the character Jamie about as useful as an alarm clock?  All of this and more when we discuss Zoids!  

The SMC crew is moving "faster than a speeding bullet" out of our superhero month with one of our favorites; Justice League Unlimited.  The sheer size of the show just makes everything feel so epic in scale and we watched the final two episodes of the series which proves to us that this is an amazing cartoon.  Loads of heroes, tons of villains, a team up between heroes and villains to battle a mutual foe?  We watched the episodes "Alive" and "Destroyer" and were gleefully excited at how well everything still holds up today.  Put on your spandex and everyone "assemble" for the Justice League Unlimited.   Join us next week as we launch into Pocket Monster Month!

Are you concerned about Millions of Unusual Small Creatures Lurking Everywhere?  Do you have a shoebox full of small pink rubber men from the mid 80's in your garage?  Did you ever wonder where this franchise originated from and how it got to the USA?  The answer is the cartoon show Ultimate Muscle.  Originating in Japan as a parody of superhero shows/manga, Ultimate Muscle was a hit but only the toys made their way to the US in the 80's.  In 2002, a second generation of Ultimate Muscle aired for 51 episodes on Fox Box.   Listen this week as Sean and Dave have tag teamed jumped off a turn buckle with an atomic knee and into the show - Ultimate Muscle!  

You called us dummies for not watching Zoids: Chaotic Century and we listened!  This week we took another user submission from Facebook and we were honestly a little hesitant after our previous foray into Zoids New Century.  Chaotic Century was a great mix of intriguing plot points and familiar liger zoids.  The pilot for Chaotic Century hit all the major beats to make for not only a great pilot episode but also an incredible finale.

If you haven't caught up with the latest (and final) season of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power on Netflix, you might want to do so before listening to our latest chat with showrunner Noelle Stevenson. We recently brought you a Season 5 interview with Stevenson to tease the adventures of Adora & co. in this final batch of episodes, along with high praise for star Keston John as the many voices of The Horde. But now, in our continuing series of interviews through our animation-focused podcast Saturday Mourning Cartoons, we chat with Stevenson one last time to break down spoilers from the excellent and emotionally satisfying Season 5.

In this all-too-brief conversation, Stevenson talked about the very special tattoo that she and members of the crew got as a memento of their time on the show and what it means within the lore of She-Ra. We also discussed the many complicated relationships between the characters, be they parent-child dynamics, teacher-student pairings, or romantic entanglements. There's a lot of emotional payoff at the end of She-Ra, something that all five seasons have been building towards, but the crowning achievement of all of this strife and drama is the final resolution for CatrAdora, which plays out beautifully in the finale. Stevenson addresses all of that and more, so we invite you to listen and read along!

With the fifth and final season of 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power' now on Netflix, we had a chance to chat with showrunner Noelle Stevenson about the all-new adventures streaming today. We're revisiting 'MEGAS XLR', an early 2000s animated mecha series created by Jody Schaeffer and George Krstic. The action-packed animation on this comedy show that takes aim at all kinds of anime trope came courtesy of Cartoon Network Studios, Titmouse animation, and Sunmin Image Pictures. And why are we doing this to ourselves? Well, one, because it's actually a really funny and well-done series, but also because a listener called in to recommend it; our cartoon lawyers say we're legally obligated to cover it. Just happy it's a good toon this time!

If you want to see a bunch of powerful comic book superheroes team up to fend off extraterrestrial threats to our home planet, there's no better place to look than Marvel's Avengers Defenders of the Earth! This 1986 animated series from King Features, with development by Marvel and production from a trio of overseas studios including Toei Animation, united the bigger-than-life heroes of King Features Syndicate. Flash Gordon, Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Lothar joined forces to defend Earth (hence the name) from the villainous intents of Ming the Merciless. Helping to fight back for the fate of their planet were the second generation of heroes, including Rick Gordon, Jedda Walker, the adopted son Kshin and his space-alien pet Zuffy, and Lothar "L.J." Junior.

While these characters might not be the first that come to mind when thinking about comic book superheroes, they're definitely classics for a reason. We're coming up on their 100th anniversary -- a pretty monumental task for any character, really -- so what better way to celebrate than by watching Defenders of the Earth? Unfortunately, some of the backwards tropes -- racist, misogynist, every other -ist -- is part of the package here. Is it bad enough to dip, or just enough to force us into tough conversations? In the latest Saturday Mourning Cartoons interview, we chat with Will Becher and Richard Phelan, the directors of Aardman Animation's 'A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.' The duo talked about their experience in the animation industry and how it led them to direct this franchise's space-faring sequel, which is absolutely packed full of Easter eggs and nods to classic sci-fi titles. They also revealed how the creation of Lu-La came about, her early designs that didn't make the final cut, the challenge of designing a spaceship in stop-motion animation, and how the cast communicated the story without any spoken dialogue. Plus, they tease what's up next for Aardman, including more of Shaun the Sheep and 'Chicken Run 2.'
