21 Apr 2016Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 100 Documentation vs Registration00:45:51
In this episode I talk to our resident Admiralty law expert John Fulweiler and we discuss the possible ways you might choose to register or document your boat.  If you have questions for John drop me a note and perhaps he will answer them in future episodes.  John's website is http://www.saltwaterlaw.com/ After the podcast was released I received this email from a listener: Hey Franz, I am listening to your podcast about US documentation and I think there should be a correction about the "built in the US" requirement you discussed. I think the official line is that: 'Evidence that a vessel was built in the U.S. is required for a vessel which is to be used in the fisheries or coastwise trade' My Beneteau 50, used for recreation,  was built in France but is a US Documented vessel. I think the owner being a US citizen is the important issue. Hope this clarifies things a bit. Love the show, as always! Regards, Dan. Sailing! 11 Sep 2016Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 108 Sailing in the Swedish Archipelago part 100:47:39
This is the first part of a two-part interview where Neil Fletcher and I discuss our trip in the summer of 2016 through the Swedish archipelago. Regular listeners will remember Neil, who first came on the podcast a year or two ago to talk about his experiences chartering in Croatia. He then joined myself and Jack Andrys for a weeklong jaunt aboard my boat See Dream through Greece and Turkey in 2015. Neil enjoyed the experience so much that he bought his own boat, Arcturus, a 1966 Allied Seabreeze yawl, sight unseen, in the Fall of 2015 from Andy Schell of the On The Wind podcast (formerly 59-north). Neil spent ten weeks in the Swedish archipelago this summer and is planning to repeat that experience, perhaps venturing further afield to Finland, in 2017. You can find much more detail about sailing in Sweden  at his website, sailingarcturus.com, where you'll  find information on specific destinations, tips on money, communications, getting around and general information on what is one of the world's great cruising destinations. Here's the route that. Neil and I discuss in these next two episodes. Below are a few images from my bear encounter that I discuss in the introduction to this podcast My daughter and I hiked up this trail a couple weeks later to get a photograph of the Aspen the delayed my walk up the trail and probably saved me a mauling by the bear. Neil, looking very happy with his new boat, at the Wasahamnen marina in central Stockholm This is the second part of a two-part interview where Neil Fletcher and I discuss our trip in the summer of 2016 through the Swedish archipelago. We discuss the small and delightful guest harbor at Smä Dalarö, the busy port of Sandhamn, which is considered the sailing capital of the archipelago, and some trouble we encountered battling swells and ferry traffic on the island of Moja. Neil has much more detail about sailing in Sweden available at his website, www.sailingarcturus.com Here's the route that. 01 Oct 2016Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 110 Hugh Morrison s/y Savannah and the Corsica Classic00:45:31
Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 110 Hugh Morrison s/y Savannah and the Corsica Classic In this episode. It's my delightful pleasure to interview Hugh Morrison. Hugh Morrison is the owner of the sailing yacht Savanna. Savanna is a classic 90 foot yacht built in 1997, the inspiration for this boat was from the classic J Sloops. Savannah participated in the Corsica classic Regatta this year. I talk to Hugh about the boat, his experiences sailing and his background. Hugh is a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, which was founded in 1815 in the Thatched House Tavern in St James’s, London. Today the clubhouse is located in Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom, the club’s patron is Queen Elizabeth II and the club’s Admiral is Prince Philip. The sailing yacht Savanna has its own website http://www.sysavannah.com/ I'm going to take some information from the website and place it below. In 1995, an American yachtsman hired Elizabeth Meyer’s J Class management to help him create a modern classic. He was inspired by the J Class sloops, William Fife and a number of other beautiful old yachts, but wanted a boat under 100' long. J Class selected Pedrick Yacht Designs in Newport, Rhode Island for hull and rig design, and John Munford Design in Southampton, England for interior styling. J Class, Pedrick, and Munford worked as a team to create Savannah. The result is a strikingly beautiful yacht that represents the paragon of 20th Century yacht design. Shortly after her launch in 1997 Savannah was awarded ‘Best Sailing Yacht’ by both Showboats International and the Super Yacht Society. Savannah has sailed and triumphed in many regattas around the world. In the words of her designer “Savannah’s long overhangs and high freeboard were inspired by the magnificent racing yachts of the 1930s. Her flush deck is accented by varnished teak skylights and coamings. Her beauty carries through a luxurious interior, with finely detailed, panelled mahogany joinery centred on a large and well-appointed saloon. With extensive day sailing and racing planned, there are staterooms for the owner, one guest couple and crew. Below the waterline, Savannah has an efficient cruising hullform, deep Pedrick Whale-Tail fin keel, and separate rudder. Engineered to last more than a century, her construction uses carbon fibre, Kevlar and PVC foam to be relatively lightweight but extremely robust. The tall, fractional rig, also in carbon fibre, drives Savannah to exhilarating speeds. In her creation, Pedrick has embodied the finest of classic style with the best of modern engineering and performance design.” I was introduced to Hugh Morrison by Sir Nigel Southward who I met while sailing in Italy and Croatia. several years ago. When I met Nigel. He was flying a white British Ensign. This is the first British boat that I had seen flying this Ensign so he educated me on the three different British ensigns. The only yacht club in Britain, which is allowed to fly the white Ensign is the Royal yacht squadron. Some information on the ensigns below. It was taken from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_ensign White Today's white ensign, as used by Royal Navy ships, incorporates the St George's Cross (St George's Ensign). British yachts owned by members of the Royal Yacht Squadron are authorised to apply for a permit to wear this ensign. Defaced white ensigns include that of the British Antarctic Territory. Blue The Blue Ensign (dark blue field with the Union Flag in the canton) undefaced is worn by masters of vessels in possession of a warrant issued by the Director of Naval Reserves, and by the members of certain yacht clubs. Such warrants are issued to officers in the active or retired lists of the Royal Naval Reserve and the maritime reserve forces of other Commonwealth realms and territories. The master must be of the rank of lieutenant RN or above, and fishing vessels must be crewed by at least four othe...

30 Oct 2016Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 113 Sailing Around the World with Rory McDougal aboard s/y Cokie00:43:17
In this episode I interview Rory McDougal This is the first of a multi part series of the story of Rory sailing this small Catamaran around the world. This is from Rory's website http://www.roryandcookie.com/about.html "In 1989 Rory McDougall had a dream. Inspired by Laurent Bourgnon who crossed the Atlantic in a Hobie 18 catamaran, Rory had the burning passion to sail around the world on the smallest catamaran and multihulled sailboat. Rory tried for 2 years to get support and sponsorship to create a high-tech event to circumnavigate the world on an open-deck beach catamaran. Fantastic support came from TIMBERLAND, NORTH SAILS UK, RIGEL COMPASSES, BROOKES & GATEHOUSE in the form of products - but no boat to float them on!! In the end it made sense to choose a less extreme catamaran that had living space below and gave a low-tech and low-expense way of getting afloat. The Wharram Tiki 21 design was the perfect choice. 06 Nov 2016Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 114 Luis Martins on how to Fiberglass pt 101:28:24
This week I interview Louis Martins a long time listener and boat builder located in Lisbon Portugal. This is the first episode of what will probably be several episodes where we discuss the tools, materials and techniques of glass reinforced laminate's. In other words, learning to lay up graphite or fiberglass using mostly polyester or epoxy resins. If you buy or build a boat you're going to need to learn these techniques and while it's better to actually watch videos on this topic. Here you can at least get a head start in the terminology and the thought process of learning to use epoxy reinforced fiberglass, graphite or Kevlar and also using polyester resins with the same materials. 20 Nov 2016Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 116 Bareboat Chartering on the Italian Amalfi Coast with Gary Harris00:54:32
This is a great interview with Gary Harris on his bareboat charter along the Amalfi Coast. Gary has allowed me to share his journal for the trip along with the photographs, Here it is! July 23, 2016 Castellammare di Stabia- We arrived at Naples terminal from Florence at 11:00. We had previously arranged a van and driver through Pompeii Car Service to meet us at the terminal and Mario was waiting with his 8 person Mercedes Van. We mentioned that we’d like to have lunch nearby then visit Mt Vesuvius. As we were in Naples, he suggested a Pizza place in town which, if we are lucky, would not yet have a line. We were pleasantly surprised to find no line at L’antica Pizzeria da Michele which is an unassuming place on a small side street that one would never know has the best pizza in Naples (and thereby Italy, and therefore in the world). Here there are exactly 3 items on the menu; Margherita, Margherita with extra cheese, and Marinara. We sat at the basic formica tables on simple chairs and ordered 5 pizzas and two bottles of still water for the seven of us which arrived in about 7 minutes. There was a signed photo on the wall above our table of Julia Roberts, who apparently added notoriety (especially for American tourists) by eating at this restaurant in “Eat, Pray, Love” (spectacularly awful movie). The pizza was fantastic which we ravenously devoured in 15 minutes. At this point the restaurant had filled with locals and tourists and a line had formed outside. Mario was waiting outside as routed through Naples, noting interesting items and facts about the city on our way to Vesuvius. He dropped us at the end of the road several hundred feet below the summit where we paid the park entrance fee and walked the mile or so to the top where we looked down into the caldera and had a hazy view of the entire bay of Naples including the Sorrento peninsula and Isle of Capri to the South and Procida and Ischia to the north west. Mario mentioned the haze was primarily from the unusually high humidity that day and not pollution. We spent 20 or so minutes at the top then returned to meet Mario at the drop off point. The drive to Castellammare di Stabia took about 45 minutes and he had to circle around the marina area and ask a couple of times to find Sun Charters (office marked with another charter company sign). The boat was ready early so we unloaded our luggage and send the kids aboard while Val, Holly and I had Mario take us to Auchan Pompei for provisions. Auchan is a supermarket / Mega store akin to Super Walmart in the states. We found everything we could want at very reasonable prices. We even picked up a couple of beach towels and a large “American style” pillow to augment the typical charter boat flat pillows. We spent 149€ on provisions for the week, thinking that we’d augment with local fresh bread and water each morning, eat breakfast and lunch on the boat and dine ashore each night which worked out quite well. We returned to the boat, arriving right around 5:45. Mario suggested 250€ for the nearly 7 hours of driving (normal rate is 100€ from Naples + 30€ / hour) and I threw in another 20€ tip (not expected in Italy but, alas, American habits die hard). Certainly, the hired van was a bit of a pricey extravagance but, the convenience and Mario’s local knowledge to get us the Pizza, tour of Naples, and especially finding the Charter company lead me to consider this money well spent. Nick, Scott and I did the boat check-out with Sun Charter personnel while the rest went ashore in search of Gelato and dinner. The check out was fairly basic with going through running the motor, explaining the instruments, and going through the electrical panel. Asked for and received helpful suggestions on good anchorages at the Islands and confirmation that Agropoly was worth a visit. I received the equipment list which I did inventory separately. When asked, I said we’d stay aboard that evening but would like to leave early in the morning.

15 Jan 2017Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 124 Sailing Around the World with Rory McDougal aboard s/y Cokie pt 400:48:23
In this episode Rory talks about his adventure sailing from New Zeland to Australia and on to Indonesia. 01 Apr 2017Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 135 Luis Martins on Fiberglass Vacuum Bagging01:03:49
This is the fifth episode on laminate working and this one is on tools and techniques for vacuum bagging of composite reinforced laminate's with Louis Martins a long time listener and boat builder located in Lisbon Portugal. If you have ideas for future podcasts or comments please drop me a note! and PLEASE rate my podcast in iTunes and perhaps write a note. 16 Apr 2017Episode 137 Rory McDougal Pt 7 Sailing in the Mediterranean01:16:46
In this final episode with Rory Rory talks about completing is circumnavigation. 26 Aug 2017Episode 14 rewind00:28:30
While I am out making memories here is a past episode from March 1 2013 This makes it easy and fun! Thanks for the letters. Today I answer the following letters ( I have taken off any personal information and just republished the letters below). Keep them coming! BTW I mentioned the wonderful weather routing free service that Herb Hilgenberg, SOUTH BOUND II has offered for many years for those sailors crossing the Atlantic. Here is his web page. http://www3.sympatico.ca/hehilgen/vax498.htm   --------------------- Jules and I love your casts, we come from Australia We are thinking of buying a boat in the Med. We are wondering in your experience how much of the asked price we could expect to pay. We are especially interested considering the financial state of the Eurozone. Eventually we are planning to leave the Med via the straits of Gibraltar , across the Atlantic, through the Caribbean ,out the Panama , across the Pacific and home to Australia, we may detour via New Zealand . We have been planning now for 2 years and figure the end of this year/early 2013 will be time to go. We are aware entering the Med in February means it is reasonably cold ~ will this make dealing with brokers and vendors more difficult? Any thoughts you have would brighten our day and help our retirement. Look forward to your next cast..... Cheers from hot and sunny Australia. Hi Franz, I´m a guy in my mid 40 s, living in a little harbour town (Dragør), just outside Copenhagen, Denmark. Found your web, twitter and podcast accounts just 3 weeks ago and have had you in my ears, around bedtime, ever since. I just love it - Thank you. Last year my family and I, bought a Jeanneau 32 sun odyssey and that is probably the best thing we ever did. We are planning - or talking about planning - a one year trip to the Med. and therefore we ran into your sites. The only challenge we have is our jobs, house, cars and our kids school (8 and 12 years old). We are a bit uncertain if we should take the cannals down Europe (germany - France), or take the long way around Denmark, down the English Cannal and pass the Bay of Biscay, and into the Med. from the Atlantic (Gibraltar). Bay of Biscay has a very bad reputation here in Denmark. I know it´s not your in your back yard, but do you have some advice or just a comment on which choice to prefer? I´m sure we will find a solution. I told my wife and kids that, if we sail to the Med. we have to meet up with a nice and very skilled sailor from America, called Franz. (just for a hello and maybe a little chat) Franz, if your by any chance loose your navigation or unexpectedly turn your boat the "wrong" direction and end up in Dragør near Copenhagen, let me have the honor to welcome you with a cold danish beer (Carlsberg) and a hot meal. I guarantee you a friendly "danish style" and not a heavy, bureaucratic and arrogant "Croatian style" (- he he, you must have been unlucky.) Thank you so much for your podcasts etc. - hang in there......PLEASE. I heard the last one last night - what do you expect me to do tonight??? I might go through your video´s. Only have seen one so far (My double Anchoring Video)- Very good and informativ, also an issue that I have thought a lot about. Still never sleept a hole night anchored. (You are welcome to use any of this as you´r pleased – Excuse my english - my danish should be a lot better. Can`t wait for the next podcast. Best regards Ricky Thanks Franz, that was terrific. I am listening to your Travelexchange stories now as well. You have so much on the go that I wonder if you might be better off combining these two podcasts on one site. I was amazed to hear that your sails have lasted 20 years, so I guess it pays to baby them as you do by wrapping them up and keeping them out of the big winds. Pryde makes good sails I guess. I have a video called Heavy Weather Sailing where Neil Pryde and a bunch of other big name experts give tips on...

16 Jan 2018Episode 148 Sailing in the Mediterranean My Anchor Setup00:19:30
Episode 148 Sailing in the Mediterranean My Anchor Setup This is my anchor set up. In the past I've talked about my double anchoring technique. In this episode I describe an image which is available at the website as well as in a YouTube video. The image is an image of the bow of my boat and my anchor set up and I discuss why I set up my anchor this way. Specific to my boat is I have a line for a second anchor to deploy off the bow of the primary anchor as well as a yellow poly polypropylene line which would aid in a fouled anchor recovery as well as a beacon for me to spot when I am looking for my anchor at the bottom. https://youtu.be/W7x9vDr1E1k If you have suggestions for future episodes please write me a note. "On a different note, another podcast I listen to had an episode you might be interested in. Boat Radio has a variety of different 'shows' about different topics and one of them is Sundowners which discusses how to make drinks based upon a given theme. In October, they did one on drinks made with ouzo. I've tried several of their recipes (alone, sadly, ouzo is a tough sell to friends who aren't in a Greek frame of mind) and they're quite good. They may come in handy next summer. 26 Jan 2018Episode 149 Sailing Summer 2017 pt 6 Patras to Corfu, Avoid Sailing the Ionians!00:26:24
Avoid sailing the Ionians I now recommend you avoid sailing the Ionians! This episode has us sailing the Ionian Islands with Andy and Lisa Buffmire on my 5th leg of this summers sailing adventure from Turkey to Croatia. Andy and Lisa sail with me from Patras to Corfu right through of the crowded and overly popular, ruined, formerly ideal cruising grounds. Excessive expansion of charter and flotilla fleets have taken this once delightful cruising area and made it into over crowded anchorages and somewhat polluted waters. With aggressive charter flotilla employees trying to claim open anchorage areas for their flotillas exclusive use An example of how charter companies claim anchorage space early in the day to keep other sailors away! They send advance crews to tell others to stay away! Avoid sailing the Ionians it is now overcrowded by Flotillas and Charter fleets.   When I first sailed in these waters over 15 years ago Cleopatra Marina had about 80 boats wintering on the hard today there are over 1000 on the hard with another 2 large boatyards nearby. That along with massive Marina expansion takes most of the charm out of this once delightful corner of Greece If you want a charter vacation and want a hint of what the cruising lifestyle is like Please don't contribute the charter companies that have now ruined this once delightful cruising area. Stormy Adriatic Brian joined me in the stormy Adriatic on the roughest portion of last summer's sail. This was the leg from Corfu over to Italy and then up to Croatia about 250 nautical miles. On the passage from Brindisi Italy to Cavtat Croatia we were hit with a tremendous storm bringing the waves up to approximately 12 feet. Shearing off one of my chain plate bolts. In this interview I catch up with Brian and we reminisce about this leg of the summer sail. 05 Apr 2018Episode 155 Sailing in the Mediterranean Manzano family’s Leap of Faith01:16:15
Taking the Leap of faith! Family of 7 the Manzano family sell it all and take a leap of faith to go sailing! Jack Andrys interviewed Paul Manzano to learn how they did it! Here is what they say:   About We are a family of seven setting out on an incredible adventure to sail around the world and explore our God’s amazing creation.  We are from the beautiful Carson Valley in the state of Nevada. So we sold our 5,400 square foot house that we spent years remodeling and gave away 95% of our stuff. We saved some home décor and family mementos and photos. That’s about it. We are temporarily leaving our beloved friends and family, and our cat and dog. We can’t imagine not coming back home to Nevada.  We are very sad about this but very excited to have the chance to go out and see new places and meet new people. We will be purchasing a sailboat in the Mediterranean Sea, Turkey to be exact. We are so excited to see the boat in person and start making our new home on the water.  How cool is it going to be to take our home wherever we want to go? Our friends and family have been very supportive of our decision and have helped us get to this point in so many ways.  Thank you friends and family! We love you all so much! It is not easy to leave all of you for such a long time. We hope to use this website as a way for you to follow us on our journey and to keep in touch.  We are unsure how much access we will have to internet so please be patient as we get stated. Please don’t hesitate to write to us and keep us updated on you too! https://www.instagram.com/seven_on_the_seas/ Jack Wrote me: Franz, I did an interview at MDR, feel free to use it, Paul and his family know that we recorded this for you to use for the podcast if you want to. Paul is a great guy and his family reflect that, we have made a lasting friendship with the Manzano’s and the Andrys here at Marina di Ragusa. 13 Apr 2018Episode 156 Sailing in the Mediterranean Sailing Croatia with Andrew Vik Pt 101:04:13
Sailing Croatia with Andrew Vik Pt 1   Andrew Vic has been sailing Croatia for 10 years. In this interview he shares some of his knowledge and favorite spots. In Andrews email he shared a Google Earth KML and KMZ file with me which gave great information about sailing Croatia unfortunately WordPress does not let me share this in the post.  If you would like to get a copy of these files (which contain a wealth of information) write me an email ask, and I can send them as attachments.   From Andrew Vik: Hi Franz: I've attached all of my Google Earth tracks from my 10 summers in the Med. Have a look - maybe it helps you plan your approach to Venice. Also attached is a list of "official" anchorages where you may have to pay a fee. It's in Google Earth format as well. 18 Apr 2018Episode 157 Sailing in the Mediterranean SY Yves Christian interview by Jack Andrys01:29:22
SY Yves Christian interview with Jack Andrys. Jack came up with another great interview with Lotty and Sacha owners of the classic SY Yves Christian  Thanks Jack Lotty and Sacha!! Here is some information from the family blog https://sailingyves.com/ "We, Lotty and Sacha live in Alnwick with our two children Hector (5) and Phoebe-Plum (2) and we will be joined by Sacha’s two sons Sam (16) and Jack (14) who live in Chester-le-Street. We love the Mediterranean and especially Greece. It’s a dream come true to be able to sail there, nevertheless quite a daunting but exciting adventure that has taken a huge amount of planning and work. Yves Christian, a gaff ketch, was designed by Scottish naval architect WG McBryde and built in France for a French owner in 1952 – purportedly for President de Gaulle’s finance minister and named after the owner’s two sons, Yves and Christian – there are still gun racks to be found under the table for personal protection! She was commissioned for making long passages and Mediterranean cruising, but much more recently she has been based in Devon in the West Country as a family boat, and that is where we found her at the end of 2016. 62 feet long including her bowsprit and 14 feet wide, she is an immensely strong ocean going yacht made of oak beams with iroko planking. At well over 40 tonnes she has a huge displacement that makes her sure-footed in heavy weather. She will accommodate up to nine people, but six in comfort. Yves went through a massive refit / rebuild between 2000 and 2003 with no detail spared – it was the objective of her previous owner to own a boat which was as good, if not better, than when she was first launched. Between January and March 2017 she went through a further refit at Stirling and Son Ltd at No1 Covered Slipway in Plymouth. This yard is housed in a building designated as an ancient monument. It was built in 1763 and ships for the Royal Navy, including one of Lord Nelson’s flagships, were constructed and launched there. Yves will be our home for the coming months. Posted on April 14, 2018 Here’s a timely reminder, before we set off back to sea later this month, that we live on a sailing boat, not a floating house. A few seconds of today’s gale force 8, gusting to 60 knots on occasion, in what is normally a sheltered marina. It’s like being at sea… (ish). Listen to it with the sound turned up to get an idea of what it’s like and imagine your house moving like this. It’s like a continuous earthquake. here is the facebook page for SY Yves Christian https://www.facebook.com/sailingyves/   I would like to get a group of sailors and listeners together and charter a yacht in Thailand next winter (2018-2019) If you are interested in joining me please contact me!  Probably limited to 4 couples. 01 May 2018Episode 158 Sailing in the Mediterranean DIY Sailboat Projects with Paul Manzano01:24:43
DIY Sailboat Projects with Paul Manzano Paul shares his DIY sailboat projects with us in this episode. We heard from Paul a few weeks ago when he was interviewed by Jack Andrys in Marina Ragusa in Sicily. In that interview Paul glossed over the fact that he built his own water maker and solve his air-conditioning and freezer problem in a frugal manner. I wanted to talk to Paul in greater detail about his DIY sailboat projects and what it took to make his own reverse osmosis water maker. Paul does a great job of describing the construction of the water maker with a little imagination I think a lot of listeners could now build their own water maker with his tips. Another DIY Sailboat Project was his air-conditioning solution was very reasonable and frugal. If you have a boat big enough to handle this solution consider this! Paul is looking for work as a mechanical engineer or anything that he can do as a remote worker you can learn more about Paul through his LinkedIn profile here is the link: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-manzano-pe-pmp-52400518 In a previous podcast I talk about https://maritimedocumentation.us/ which is a scam to dupe you into paying about 3 times the cost to renew your coast guard documentation. 25 May 2018Episode 161 Sailing in the Mediterranean Jack Andrys interviews Steve Neal of noforeignland.com01:12:37
Steve Neal of noforeignlands.com Hi Franz, I had the chance to interview Steve Neal, the creator of a web application noforeignlands.com which I started using last year when it was launched to a few people at MdR, it is now available to all and think it is useful to anyone wanting to sail or sailing in the Med. Steve’s description of the site is: Around this time last year I created a web site for the liveaboard sailors, wintering in Marina di Ragusa. It provided vessel tracking for our boats, on an interactive map which allowed us to stay in touch throughout the summer season, sharing our whereabouts and the details of places we'd found along the way. It turned out to be a very popular tool so, based upon feedback from the sailors here at our marina this winter, we've added a host of new features to the site, and hundreds of new places of interest to the map. Please take a look at www.noforeignland.com to find out more. It's completely free to use, and we're now inviting all sailors to register, link up with friends and contribute their knowledge to the map. We discuss and announce updates to the site in our Facebook group: NOFOREIGNLAND. Fair winds. Facebook link is at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/noforeignland/ Best regards Jack Andrys Steve Neal Here is a link to the Croatian Pilot that Vic Andrews suggested was better than 777 https://www.amazon.com/Adriatic-Pilot-T-D-Thompson/dp/1846236908/ --------- from Franz: I would like to get a group of sailors and listeners together and charter a yacht in  French Polynesia or Thailand next winter (2018-2019) If you are interested in joining me please contact me! 30 May 2018Episode 162 Sailing in the Mediterranean Leo Goolden of s/y Tally Ho00:29:25
This week I interview Leo Goolden owner and boat builder of the 1910 20 ton gaff rigged Pilot Cutter Tally which won the 1927 Fastnet race. http://sampsonboat.co.uk/ YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg-_lYeV8hBnDSay7nmphUA This is from Leo’s website "My name is Leo Sampson Goolden. I am a Boatbuilder, Sailor and Writer from Bristol, England. Right now, I’m on a mission to rebuild a 107-year old English sailing yacht called Tally Ho. Designed by Albert Strange in 1909, she is a well-known and important historic vessel – but after many adventures she was left in a remote port in Oregon to rot for decades, despite some valiant attempts to rescue her. I bought her and moved her to the Olympic Peninsular earlier this year, and am now starting to rebuild her from the keel up. Eventually I hope to sail her back to the UK. You can support the project here. I started the Sampson Boat Co in 2013 as a platform through which to work as a self-employed Boatbuilder. Since then I have also started writing about my sailing and boatbuilding projects, so this website has become a kind of blog, as well as a display of my work. Many of my adventures were aboard the 1947 Folkboat Lorema, which I rebuilt in Cornwall and then sailed to the Caribbean with no engine or GPS, frequently breaking things, getting lost, and making a fool of myself along the way. I also had some ridiculous escapades working as Skipper of the 95′ Classic Ketch Sincerity, (read about some of our adventures in Greenland here) and as Bosun of the 217′ Schooner Adix. While I definitely have my hands very full with Tally Ho, I will continue working every now and then to fund the project. I can be commissioned as a commercial skipper (200GT), yacht crew / navigational officer (3000GT), or for writing or boatbuilding work. Please see the relevant pages for more information." 29 Sep 2018Episode 166 Sailing in the Mediterranean Installing port lights and portholes with Luis Martins00:50:50
Installing port lights and portholes with Luis Martins Luis wrote me "Last time we talked you showed some interest in how I installed the new port lights and portholes in my boat without any screws or bolts. What do you say if we record a podcast on that subject?" Great idea and here it is! This is how it turned out and here are the products he used in the process:   3M 4991 VHB Acrylic Foam Tape 12mm x 16.5m x 2.3mm https://amzn.to/2OHfbMU https://amzn.to/2QGUG4d Sika® Aktivator-205 https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=3508 Sika® Primer-209N https://amzn.to/2ODT2Px Sikaflex 295 UV Black 10.3 oz. Cartridge Adhesive / Sealant Sika The 4 products above were mentioned in the podcast with Luis Martins on installing Portlights and Portholes Here are some Recommended Books     Lining up the portholes Luis wrote... "Considering the quality of today's adhesives compared to 20 years ago. I would not thru-bolt acrylic port lights as the holes will weaken the port light and create stress points that may lead to stress cracks. You need to drill oversized holes to accommodate for expansion of the acrylic with temperature changes and then deal with sealing those oversized holes. In my opinion, bolting the port lights brings more problems that need to be addressed. If bolting, you should put spacers between the cabin sides and the acrylic so when you mount the port lights you don’t squash all the sealant and end with a very thin film of sealant that will fail as soon as the acrylic expands or contracts. On my windows I put a small chamfer around the outer edge to reduce the bulk effect and it worked quite well. I also applied Sika primer 209 in the area where the tape and Sikaflex is. This primer serves three purposes: 1. You don’t see the tape and sealant, it’s all masked by the black primer; 2. The primer protects the tape and sealant from UV; 3. The primer promotes the bonding to the acrylic. Using the VHB tape made for a very simple process, you lay the tape on the cabin sides, stick the acrylic to it and then deal with masking and Sikaflex without the acrylic moving around or having dozens of bolts sticking out and having to align them. The VHB tape is very strong although it doesn’t look like at first. It’s pressure sensitive!" Lose yourself in adventure along the coast of Hawaii's islands aboard the SV Solstice (one-of-a-kind sailing vessel, based on drawings by America's foremost designer of small yachts, William Atkin). You'll certainly be recognized for your contributions to the team of 2 paying 'crew' and receive A LOT of private coaching from Paul due to the small team-size. Bunk in your own private sea berth, and store your gear in a locker assigned specifically to you. You'll participate in ALL aspects of the expedition that's designed with your sailing objectives in mind as discussed with Paul in advance. If you've dreamed to lay at anchor on a remote shore that you plotted a course to using new techniques that promote safe seamanship, despite the challenges that Hawaiian conditions conjure up, and yearn to immerse yourself aboard a voyaging sailboat doing real sailing with a proven Master Instructor, then join Paul aboard Solstice for the sail-training expedition of a lifetime. 11 Jan 2019Episode 175 Sailing In the Mediterranean Single Handed Boats00:42:59
Single Handed Boats Episode 175 Sailing In the Mediterranean Single Handed Boats, my thoughts on priorities Single Handed Boats, my thoughts on priorities I have given a lot of thought to what is needed for a single handed boat. In this episode I discuss what I think would be the top priorities to consider when looking at a boat for single-handed sailing and single handed boats. Single Handed Boats should be easily steerable by wind energy with the backup being electrical self steering systems as the top priority. Bozburun Turkey with the backup being electrical self steering systems. I also give a short discussion of what I consider to be the ideal rig for a single-handed boat. My next consideration would be the importance of being able to handle the anchor by yourself from the cockpit and I described my electric windless set up. Third is the ability to have storage space on the boat for the needed spare parts, water, food and comfort. Also discussed is information on the Schengen agreement provided by Jonathan Wexler, and the insanity of the European union regulations regarding this matter. Here is a link to my wind vane setup. 01 Feb 2019Episode 176 Sailing In the Mediterranean Tracy Edwards of SV Maiden00:31:53
I attended the Sundance Film Festival in Park City Utah where I had the opportunity to interview, in person, Tracy Edwards of the Sailing Documentary Maiden. MAIDEN is the story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook in charter boats, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World in 1989. Tracy’s inspirational dream was opposed on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it, the chauvinistic yachting press took bets on her failure, and potential sponsors rejected her, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity. But Tracy refused to give up: she remortgaged her home and bought a secondhand boat, putting everything on the line to ensure the team made it to the start line. Although blessed with tremendous self-belief, Tracy was also beset by crippling doubts and was only able to make it through with the support of her remarkable crew. With their help she went on to shock the sport world and prove that women are very much the equal of men.
