19 Jun 202010. The Future of Urban Air Mobility – Mark Moore, Director of Strategy, Uber Elevate00:42:37
We take to the sky as a pioneering voice in VTOL, Mark Moore, Director of Strategy at Uber Elevate, joins host Grayson Brulte to walk through his journey from NASA to Uber and how eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft) will lead to redesigned cities with transportation freedom. Mark breaks down the misconceptions of eVTOLs and their benefits compared to helicopters, including reduced noise pollution and the safety parameters built into eVTOL design that create thrusting control redundancies to ensure continued operation even if a part is broken. He shares his unique perspective on how the traditional roles of commercial operators and government agencies have flipped with Silicon Valley leading the charge on the technological innovations and capital investment for eVTOLs. The two discuss Uber’s Elevate strategy of collaboration for the establishment of an ecosystem of developers, public officials and key stakeholders to make the endeavor a reality. Mark compares the current and future eVTOL landscape with that of the early days of aviation and offers his insight on how the industry will evolve over the next two decades to allow city planners to “take off the gloves” and redesign cities for productivity around a nodal mobility system. And for the first time, Mark shares with Grayson how his groundbreaking “NASA Puffin Electric Tailsitter VTOL Concept” paper caught the eye of Google’s Larry Page and ultimately led to a meeting where Larry showed Mark the building where he was going to start the industry’s first eVTOL company.   Learn more about Uber Elevate at https://www.uber.com/us/en/elevate/.   Subscribe to SAE Tomorrow Today or visit www.sae.org/podcasts to stay up to date on all the latest information from SAE. 30 Jul 202016. Supersonic Travel: Getting You Across the Globe in 3 Hours - Tom Vice, Chairman, President and CEO of Aerion00:50:35
Aerion plans to bring back the Golden Age of Flying, only this time, it will be done by an environmentally conscious, technology-innovative company. Tom Vice, Chairman, President and CEO of Aerion, lends his expertise in supersonic aviation to the podcast for a conversation with host Grayson Brulte on all things Aerion, plus insights into why the aviation industry stopped innovating and what the future holds.   Tom walks us through his journey into aviation, from watching every Apollo launch on a small, black and white TV to working on the B2 Bomber to the “most incredible thing” he worked on at Northrop Grumman: the James Webb Space Telescope, which Tom believes could be the tool that finds life beyond Earth. Tom recalls the lessons he’s learned along the way and how they have shaped his vision for innovation and sustainability.   Tom shares the vision for Aerion Connect, which builds out the entire travel ecosystem and experience—FBOs, travelling to-from airports, airplanes—to allow travelers to experience the joy of travelling once again. All of this aligns with Aerion’s vison to connect any two points in the world within three hours in a more compassionate and empathetic way, without spending so much time in an airplane. Essentially, get to your destination, enjoy your destination, and learn and love from it.   Next, we step into Aerion’s highly anticipated AS2 jet and hear plans for when it will start soaring through the sky. We learn about the fully customizable, highly digitized, “Whisper Quiet” cabin; how “Boomless Cruise” is a game changing supersonic technology that’s closer to commercial reality than most people think; and how the AS2 can reinvent business by cutting significant travel times.   The conversation digs deeper into the second revolutionary aspect that Aerion is perfecting: new fuels and power sources. Tom shares how customers, investors and the general public appreciate Aerion’s commitment using biofuels that are kind to our planet and are excited to see the AS2’s aerodynamically clean and efficient engine. Grayson and Tom touch upon Aerion’s partnership with Canadian-based Carbon Engineering and how they are setting Aerion’s advancements apart from the industry.   Throughout the conversation, Tom touches on Aerion 2050, the company’s strategic plan to go to hypersonic, branch into supersonics for commercial aviation, what future fuel and power sources will make this a reality, the AS3, and take us inside of Aerion Park in Melbourne, Fla., where the AS2 will be designed, built and tested.   To close out, Grayson and Tom discuss why aerospace innovation, specifically with supersonic jets, stopped in the mid-20th Century. From the difficult challenges to overcome environmental and noise concerns to the increased focus on revenue and dollars in commercial aviation, Tom discusses why aerospace, once of the birthplace of innovation, became stagnant; but offers optimism for what the future holds for the industry.   Learn more about Aerion at www.aerionsupersonic.com.   Subscribe to SAE Tomorrow Today or visit www.sae.org/podcasts to stay up to date on all the latest information from SAE. 11 May 2023161. Is the Rise of EVs the End of the Gas Tax?00:36:45
With more and more consumers plugging in their cars instead of filling up their tanks, the gas tax is slowly eroding—just like many of our roads and bridges across the country. Less fuel tax means less money for repairing our decaying infrastructure, but Road Usage Charges (RUC) can change that. . RUC — also referred to as a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) fee, a distance-based user fee (DBF), or a mileage-based user fee (MBUF) — charges motorists based on the number of miles they drive instead of the number of gallons of fuel they put into their vehicles. This evolution to a more usage-based model provides sustainability and fairness in paying for our roads and bridges as more and more consumers move to EVs. . As a leading global engineering and professional services firm, WSP USA has led some of the largest and most successful RUC pilots in the country. These efforts have led to wider state consideration and enhanced regional interest in RUC as a viable future transportation funding source. . For expert insight, we sat down with David S. Kim, SVP and Principal, National Transportation Policy and Multimodal Strategy for WSP USA, to discuss RUC and how more states are considering RUC funding as an option given the rise in EV ownership and impacts of inflation. He also share insight on transit agencies’ complicated and expensive efforts to transition bus fleets to zero emission. . We’d love to hear from you. 03 Nov 2022134. Transforming the Dashboard with Haptic Feedback00:29:45
A dashboard free of traditional buttons? It’s just one way Nissan is redefining our interaction with cars through haptic feedback. . In the new Ariya electric crossover, Nissan opted for a button-less dashboard over the ever-growing tablet-sized screen. Their goal is a clean and calming dashboard experience rather than a wide array of buttons and complicated menus. By creating a smooth, haptic feedback control panel with only the most important functions, consumers can focus on their main task: driving. . So, how does haptic feedback work? The control panel in the Ariya reacts to touch, communicating through fingertip vibrations. To adjust settings like climate controls and drive modes, drivers interact with a familiar set of icons. However, because the points of interaction are felt and heard rather than seen, drivers can remain focused on the road ahead. . We sat down with Adam Tacey, Senior Manager, Nissan Marketability and Testing at Nissan North America, to discuss the company’s new generation of haptic feedback controls and the critical relationship between design and function. . For more than 20 years, Nissan has worked together with the SAE Foundation℠ to reach the youngest learners and advance equitable STEM education. Read how our partnership is strengthening communities and igniting STEM potential. . We’d love to hear from you.
