As news broke of the outbreak of war in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, husband and wife team, Nick Tadd and Vanessa Warwick, decided to launch a humanitarian mission to Ukraine. Leaving Vanessa to coordinate efforts from the UK, Nick set off on the morning of 4th March 2022 in his SUV with trailer in tow loaded with donations of food and basic supplies for refugees for the 20-hour drive to the Polish/Ukraine border via a ferry from Dover to Dunkirk. What he witnessed on the border was horrifying. Amid the chaos of millions fleeing Ukraine, Nick discovered thousands of pets and animals left behind to suffer and die. Nick is currently on the front line in Ukraine, delivering food to animals abandoned by fleeing refugees and trying to arrange for some of them to be brought out of the country. In this episode, Don Robbie and I speak to Vanessa in our Extreme Holidays studio and Nick from the front line about their incredible mission to help save the pets and animals of Ukraine caught up in this terrible war. In this episode, I speak to Suzanne Buchanan, a British Citizen and the exiled former owner and editor of the Samui Times online newspaper. She has received numerous death threats and there is a warrant out for her arrest in Thailand for articles she published in the Samui Times after she investigated over a dozen suspicious backpacker deaths on the island of Koh Tao. Those investigations also led her to believe that two Burmese men, Wai Phyo and Zaw Lin, have been wrongly sentenced to death for the brutal murders of British backpackers, Hannah Witheridge and David Miller, in 2014. Speaking to me from a safe house in the UK, we discuss the deaths and murders, why she believes the two Burmese men are innocent, and how she copes with death threats and living in exile. We also discuss Suzanne’s wanderlust for travel and how travellers, especially young women, can keep safe whilst travelling. In May 2019, world traveller, the Barefoot Backer, undertook an epic 57-day, 952-mile trek from the furthest Easterly point of Great Britain to the furthest Westerly point. Few people had walked the route before, but it wasn’t the only challenge BB, a somewhat inexperienced trekker, faced. As his name would suggest, BB’s goal was to walk as much of the route barefoot whilst at the same time dealing with his dyspraxia, a condition which affects physical coordination and spacial awareness. Carrying all his equipment and part wild camping, learn what inspired BB to undertake the challenge, how he planned his route, and the logistics and difficulties he faced each day whilst catching a glimpse of Great Britain in all her glorious geographical and climatic extremes.

Justin Barker, an American citizen, was just a teenager when he and his family were gassed and robbed in Cuba. In 1981, Gail Aldwin decided to travel on a double-decker bus from London to Kathmandu. Her overland trip took her across some of the most stunning scenery in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Fraught with challenges, Gail recounts tales of smuggling, breaking cultural sensitivities, and the heavy hand of the law. She also discusses how travel has changed over the last 40 years and shaped her life including her work as a writer. When Ellis Charlesworth, an experienced sailor and former Royal Navy gunner, invited his brother for a sailing trip on his yacht, the last thing he expected was for their trip to end in disaster. Ellis discusses the role male pride and trust played in his fight to save him and his brother's life, the impact the disaster had on their relationship, and who ultimately was to blame. He also reads a poem from one of his poetry collections. This week I’m delighted to be joined by Ellis for another episode of my Extreme Holidays Podcast. Ellis was born in Sutton in Surrey, but now lives in the village of Barlow in Derbyshire. After school, he studied forestry which took him around Britain’s most finest parts. At the age of 21, he joined the Royal Navy sailing all around the world including to places such as Kenya and Venezuela. In this episode, host, Ruth Millington, swaps seats and speaks to Don Robbie about the most extreme journey she has ever been on. In 2003, Ruth and her best friend were Christmas visitors to Bam, Iran. On Boxing Day at 5.26am local time, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit the city. The quake destroyed 90% of the town and eventually led to the tragic deaths of over 26,000 Iranians. Ruth and her best friend were staying at a local guesthouse which was levelled to the ground by the quake. She awoke to find herself in the rubble and was saved by her friend – dragging her out by her feet. Over the next 30 hours – using mostly their bare hands and in their pyjamas and bare feet - they began a frantic rescue attempt to save 12 people buried alive beneath their hotel ruins. Listen in to this extraordinary and at times terrifying tale.

In 2018, Iain Young, Andy Hocking & Clive Marsden took a road trip on Royal Enfield motorbikes from Kathmandu in Nepal to Everest Base Camp in Tibet. From the thick, muddy roads of Nepal to the heady high-altitude plains of Tibet, learn how these three friends – all touched by cancer in some shape or form - dealt with the harsh conditions. They’ll give tips on what kit is needed including navigating road rules & Tibet’s peculiar refuelling laws. What’s even more remarkable is that Iain Young was in his 70s when he undertook the trip. You can’t get motorbiking holidays more extreme than this! Iain Young was born in Manchester in 1946. After university, he joined the Royal Air Force & worked as a military & civil test pilot until his retirement in 2012. He was awarded an MBE in 2009 for services to aviation. He lives on the Isle of Wight with his wife Lesley & they have two sons & three grandchildren. Andy Hocking was born in Cornwall in 1962 before moving to Hampshire. After school, he started an apprenticeship as an Auto electrician then worked at the local oil refinery before retiring at 55 so he could pursue his love of travel. He is married to Karen & has two boys. In 1987, Clementine Smith and her boyfriend drove across war-torn Mozambique on the back of a motorbike so that they could get to Malawi for Christmas. Even though Clementine had spent part of her childhood in Malawi and was now living in Zimbabwe, little was she prepared for the horrors of the civil war that raged through Mozambique. Travelling on a budget and a journey fraught with danger, Clementine discusses how she coped with the extreme poverty and suffering she witnessed, along with the risk of being ambushed. Broke and with little food to eat, they arrived in Malawi, a country which on the surface appeared a world apart from Mozambique, but little did they know of the road which lay ahead. In 1998, global nomad, keen bicycle traveller and author, Graydon Hazenberg, decided to cycle across the roof of the world from Islamabad in Pakistan to Mount Kailash (Tibet’s Holiest Mountain) with his sisters and their partners. It was to be a 3-month trip across 2200 miles of some of the world’s most inspiring and harshest terrain. Along the way, they met many of the fascinating ethnic groups that live in this remote region, but the trip came with some immense challenges: equipment failures, illness, food shortages, abysmal road conditions and efforts by the Chinese Public Security Bureau to stop them cycling to Tibet.
