28 Oct 2022050. Anders Kjaerevik | How to improve your downhill skills, by the best Golden Trail Series downhiller!00:52:23

Anders Kjaerevik is professional trail runner from Norway sponsored by Salomon.

He’s mostly famous for two things: being an “experimental mountain runner”, as he likes to call himself, and being extremely good on the downhills.

Right now he’s competing at the Golden Trail Series final in Madeira (5 stages, a total of 109km and +7300m), where - of course - he’s the leader of the special downhill segment classification!

In this episode, we dive into his love for the sport and for training, how he likes to experiment different training techniques (this summer he was running a super high mileage with multiple weeks in a row over 300km and +10000m of elevation!), how trained for this season and what his strategy is going to be in Madeira.

But I think the most interesting part is when he gives his tips and advice on how to become a better downhill runner. Visualisation, strength for the quads and handling the risk on technical terrain: learn from one of the best in the world!

In this episode we talk about the challenges of her adventure, how she planned it and executed it, we discuss racing and FKTs in trail running, quitting her 9-5 job to become a professional athlete, defining success and where she finds her sense of validation, training and living with an absolute star of the trail running world like John Albon.

28 Jun 2023084. Stian Angermund | 2023 Short Trail World Champion + the most humble person I know on the trails01:08:32

In this episode, we chat about his approach to the race in Austria and his preparation leading up to it, about the world championship as an event, about his consistency at such a high level, about his professional running career and how it’s changed over the years, now that he’s also a husband, a dad and a 36 year old man with a lot of experience.

22 May 2024130. Sophia Laukli | Running and skiing: my life, my soul01:14:21

Sophia Laukli is a professional trail runner and cross country skier for Salomon coming from the US.

Sophia is only 23 but is already a star of the sport, being the 2023 Golden Trail World Series champion, having won races like the Mont Blanc Marathon and Sierre Zinal and her first cross country skiing world cup race this year.

I decided to reach out to Sophia knowing that she’s battling through an injury and wanting to know how she’s dealing with it and how she feels. As elite athletes, we know that injuries are part of the game but they’re still a very hard situation to get through, and I think being able to support each other and just openly talk about what we go through and what we struggle with can be valuable and teach us something.

During this episode we also discuss training on skis vs running, good and bad sides of both sports, how Sophia plans and handles her training and much much more. It turned out to be a really powerful and interesting episode, and I’m grateful to Sophia for sharing her own perspective in a very honest and authentic way.

21 Jun 2023083. Kris Jones | In-depth analysis of the preparation and the race at the Trail World Championship - Innsbruck 202301:14:07

Kris Jones is a professional runner for Hoka coming from Wales.

Kris placed 8th at the 2023 world trail and mountain running championships Innsbruck 2023 in the short trail distance, and thanks to his result he helped the GB team take home the gold medal with his teammates Thomas Roach and Jonathan Albon.

One reason why I decided to invide Kris to the podcast was because he’s always been very open about his training and he recently posted a very good article on Substack about his preparation for the world championship race. He also shared some very interesting reflection on how he managed the race - which was a 45km and 3400m of elevation, which is approximately or 28 miles and 11 thousand feet of vert. Kris has an orienteering background and he’s also a really good road and track runner, with PRs of 13:45 in the 5000m, 28.23 in the 10000m, 63’ in the half marathon and 2:17 in the marathon.

Parker Farabee is a trail runner, physiotherapist, exercise physiologist and coach from Portland, Oregon.

In this episode we talk about base training and how to build an aerobic base.

What are the benefits of base training?

Why is it essential to increase our work capacity and improve fatigue resistance?

04 Jan 2023059. Coach Lab with Daniel Rowland | How to plan your trail running season - part 100:46:39

It's easy to get excited about races and goals, but how much can we really handle until it's not sustainable anymore? How many races is it realistic to plan? What is a good way to plan the season in order to perform well, recover enough and have fun? Should every athlete have an off season? What should our periodization look like?

Just a few of the questions that we will discuss with Daniel Rowland, a trail and ultramarathon runner and Vert.run coach, one of the most interesting Twitter profiles I follow and a great expert in endurance science. In the first part of this conversation, we will cover in particular:

1) choosing goal races or objectives

2) what is your starting point right now?

3) key factors in planning the season

Enjoy!

24 Apr 2025168. Rod Farvard | Every dog has its day. Reflections, hopes and expectations ahead of the 2025 Canyons 100k01:07:12

I had the pleasure and privilege to share three weeks of altitude training in Mammoth Lakes with Rod, seeing his hard work, commitment and self believe, learning a lot from him.

It’s been roughly a year since Rod Farvard's name really came into the spotlight. Rod definitely had a breakthrough season in 2024, with the win at Canyons and the second place at Western States coming in quick succession.

As we both get ready to toe the line at the Canyons 100k this weekend, I hope you all enjoy this conversation!

17 Aug 2022041. Dillon Quitugua | Running the perimeter of Guam and empowering Pacific Islanders through trail running00:53:58

Dillon Quitugua is an Hawaiian trail and ultra runner sponsored by Janji.

Dillon recently ran the 100 mile perimeter of Guam, an island in Micronesia, in the Western Pacific. In doing so, Dillon wanted to change the perspective that Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders don’t do certain things outside the traditional paradigm. He wanted to empower his people and promote sport and physical fitness among his people. Dillon named the FKT after his father and he's now planning to organize a 100m race on the same route.

He's also founded The Tribe Collective, a project with the mission to empower individuals to be their best selves through unity and service, and uplift Pacific Islanders. The organization is launching a full scholarship for a Pacific Islander to travel and trek to the Everest Base Camp at the foothills of Khumbu Glacier in 2023.

Where did these ideas come from? how did Dillon get started with trail running? what was people's reaction to his feat?

Discover Dillon's story and follow his projects and adventures! @dill_daddy

08 Oct 2022047. Kertu Palo | Training with Vert: an experience of discovery and personal growth. Enjoying the process, feeling empowered and connecting with the trail running community00:58:04

Kertu Palo is a Vert.run premium athlete from Estonia living in the United States.

Kertu has been my very first athlete that I've coached since I started collaborating with Vert. We finally had the chance to meet for the first time in person  in Flagstaff, where we both ran Flagstaff Skypeaks - she did the 50k, placing 4th, I ran the 26k which was part of the Golden Trail Series.

Kertu started training with Vert in 2020 and she's made huge progress thanks to the guidance from Vert and her amazing dedication and consistency in training. The way she's discovered her strength and weaknesses, how she's grown as a person and as an athlete, how we've developed our relationship has been a rewarding and inspiring experience for both.

It's great to feel part and connect with the trail running community, and Kertu is the perfect example of how to train with a smile, how to enjoy spending time on the trails surrounded by nature, how to take care of your body and feel empowered thanks to trail running.

I hope you can all relate and find value in this really nice conversation. Enjoy!

27 Apr 2022025. Jazmine Lowther | Training with Vert and winning Canyons 100k by UTMB!01:10:26

This is the story of an achievement that makes all of us at Vert super, super proud. Our explore athlete, Canadian trail runner Jazmine Lowther WON the 2022 edition of Canyons 100k by UTMB, setting a new course record and earning a golden ticket for Western States in the process. It's a victory that we all feel a part of, thanks to Jazmine's hard work and dedication.

She raced fearlessly, listening to her body, managing the effort like an experienced athlete and finishing strong. Jazmine followed Tom Evans' 100k training plan under the guidance of Francesco Puppi. We used it as a base to incorporate a little more cross training (with the skis) and we decided to run Chuckanut 50k (where Jazmine placed 3rd) as a prep race towards Canyons, her A goal for the first part of the 2022 season.

Get to know Jazmine, her sport background and great sense of humour; follow her as she embarks on a new journey towards Western States!

15 May 2024129. Coach Lab with Max Keith | What types of tests can you do to monitor your fitness? Tracking progress and understanding how you're responding to training00:37:47

Max Keith is a trail runner from Chile and the co-founder of Vert.

In this episode we talk about the different types of tests that you can do to monitor your fitness. Tracking progress is not always easy, and tests are a good way to understand how you’re responding to training, if you know what you’re doing and how to interpret the data - something that your coach can definitely help you with. From very simple field tests like a time trial, an uphill test or the max heart rate test, to more complex lab tests like the VO2max or the lactate test, we will try to shed some light on what you can learn through performing different running tests for your performance.

As always, the principle that is guiding us is to do everything we do with awareness, while having fun: it's very important to have an understanding of what we’re doing, based on who we are, what we do and what our goals are, something that of course a good coach can really help you with.

Gina Lucrezi is a trail runner from Colorado, a women's right advocate and the founder of Trail Sisters, an American based organization with the mission to increase women’s participation and opportunities in trail running through inspiration, education and empowerment.

In this episode we talk about how Gina started this project, how it’s grown over the years, and what impact Trail Sisters has had on the sport of trail and ultra running. We will also talk about women’s participation in trail running, the culture of the still predominantly white and male outdoor sport community, the initiatives to encourage women’s participation in trail running and how some big race organizations are taking care of these issues.

This is a great conversation about how the general culture and society affects the way people see and approach trail running and viceversa, how trail running can have a positive influence on our society.

27 Sep 2023097. Abby Hall | Living the story I would want to read01:15:16

Abby Hall is a professional trail runner from Flagstaff, USA, sponsored by Adidas Terrex.

I wanted to have Abby on the podcast in a very particular situation, which is not an easy moment for her. It's definitely a moment of struggle or at least not what people generally associate with the life of a professional athlete. Abby had a big injury earlier this year, she broke her leg while training a few months ago, and she also experienced some complications before having surgery and during her recovery. I think there's a lot of value in sharing our struggles and painful experiences, not just the victories and the positive moments, and this conversation was very very important to me and made me think a lot, so I want to thank Abby for opening up and being so transparent about her own experience through this difficult time.

01 Nov 2023102. Lauren Klein | How and why you should think about improving your running economy00:46:54

Laurein Klein is a trail and ultra runner with an undergraduate degree in athletic training, a master degree in exercise science and experience in the sports medicine field.

In this episode we talk about how biomechanics influences running economy and how we can improve our running economy through training to become better and more efficient runners.

As trail runners we are constantly striving to be better, run further, add more elevation gain, and cover more technical terrain. Besides our training and the workouts we're doing, it is also important to pay attention to how our body is moving while we run.
Any changes that allow us to use less energy while running allow us to improve our pace without increasing the amount of stress placed on our body.

23 Nov 2021005. Lucy Bartholomew | You succeed when you try: behind the movie Running Out and Lucy's adventure on the Larapinta Trail01:12:49

Lucy Bartholomew is an Australian ultrarunner sponsored by Salomon.

Though only 25 years old, she's had an incredible career, placing in some of the toughest ultra trails around the world and becoming one of the most popular athletes in the sport. It wasn't always perfect, it wasn't always easy, but Lucy learned to navigate the highs and lows of running (and life) in a very powerful and inspiring way: without hiding fears and doubts, but accepting them and ultimately turning them into strengths. She's developed her passion for running way beyond races and competition, chasing curiosity, empowering people and giving them the inspirations to get out and run on the trails, showing them that the real motivation often lies within themselves.

The idea of running The Larapinta Trail, a 231 km route from Mount Sonder to Alice Springs, going through some of the most remote and wild  landscapes of the Australian Outback, was born in the middle of a pandemic. Sharing much more than just the running aspect, the movie Running Out shines a light on going beyond limits, the value of community, and showcases some of the most beautiful landscapes of central Australia. Thanks Lucy for taking us through them!

07 Jun 2023081. Coach Lab with Steve Krenn | How to train for trail running while living in a city01:00:03

Steve Krenn is a trail and ultra runner from New York City and a Vert.run coach.

In this episode we will try to answer the question "can I train for a mountain or trail race even though I live in a flat place? Even with limited access to the trails, you can still call yourself a trail runner and develop the specific adaptations required by running on trails.

With some adaptations and creativity, and maybe a little shift in your mindset, you can still train for trail running even if the closest thing to a trail is your local city park. The key point is to understand that running is not always enough. Core and strength training, cross training, stairs, jumps, the treadmill and the gym should be your friends.

Sure, living and training where big climbs abound would be ideal. But thanks to this episode you can discover more on how to become a successful trail runner even without the hills.

13 Nov 2024154. Vic Johnson | Nutrition principles for outdoor athletes - part 200:46:54

Vic Johnson is maybe better known on the internet as Mountain Sports Dietician.

The principles surrounding sports nutrition are relatively simple - applying them is not. Vic’s mission is very simple, to help high performing mountain athletes apply these principles properly so they can fuel and hydrate to make the most of their training and perform well at races.

In this short series of episodes that I recorded with Vic, we’re going to learn more about the topic of nutrition for endurance athletes, without pretending to exhaust the topic, but with the aim to give some practical, handy knowledge that you can apply to your own training and racing. This is the second part of our conversation.

She wrote a very interesting Substack post on Matt Trappe's newsletter “A matter of brand”, which I really suggest following and subscribing, that is called "Athletes vs influencers: the bubble has burst". I have been following Allison since then and here we are now.

In today’s conversation we talk about the current state of the running universe, the evolution we’ve seen in the past 15 years, with running and outdoor brands progressively shifting away from performance to focus more on lifestyle and fashion, the athletes vs influencers dynamic, how can athletes provide value to themselves and to the brands they work for, how can companies help the athletes build their brand and audience on different platforms.

27 Jul 2022038. Dakota Jones | Beyond just running. Environmental action, Hardrock 100 and an incurable curiosity for people and science01:11:03

Dakota Jones is a trail and ultra runner from Colorado and an environmental activist.

Coming off a third place finish at Hardrock 100m Endurance Run behind Kilian Jornet and Francois D'Haene, we sat down and chatted with him about everything that is going on in his life.

Dakota is not the average trail runner. He surely is one of the most established and successful athletes in the sport, having competed across the world over any distance and terrain, from VKs to 100 milers. But he's not just that. Dakota wants to use his broad impact on the trail running community to raise awareness towards the environmental issue and do something really impactful to protect our planet.

A few years ago he felt the need to go back to university, where he's currently studying mechanical engineering. He founded Footprints Running Camps, which aims to develop leaders in climate action, combining environmental education with direct action. He's a very curious and thoughtful person; he's passionate about everything he does, and when he does something you can be sure he goes all in.

We talk in detail about his Hardrock experience, what it felt like to race with Francois D'Haene and Kilian, the story of how he got inspired to run 100 miles by Kyle Skaggs - who paced him over the last 10 mile of the race - his friendship with Kilian.

We talk about science, environment, Footprints and the trail running community.

Lastly, we discuss his collaboration with NNormal, the outdoor brand founded by Kilian Jornet and Camper in 2022.

04 Sep 2024144. Daniel Rowland | Recovery strategies and long term athletic development - reposted00:58:06

As the summer season is coming to an end and especially after last week's UTMB, we figured it's important to re-listen to this conversation with Coach Daniel Rowland on recovery and managing the time after a race.

It’s a very delicate period, both physically and mentally: we need to make sure that we are actually taking enough time to rest after a race and many months hard training, and we need to start laying the foundation of what is next.

In this conversation we talk about how the cardiovascular, muscular and hormonal systems recover at different times after a race, how we can maintain fitness, how long we should recover within the context of a racing season and with an eye to our long term athletic development.

Daniel Rowland is a trail and ultramarathon runner, a Vert.run coach and an expert in endurance science. Follow him on Twitter @dwrowland !

Enjoy!

25 Oct 2023101. Gloria Giudici | Balancing having a full time job and being a high level athlete00:52:18

Gloria Giudici - for me and for some of my friends Rita - is an amateur runner, Sportsshoes ambassador and full time worker who happens to be my girlfriend.

Rita - which is Gloria’s middle name, for those of you who are wondering about where it comes from, is one of the hardest working people I know and for sure a great source of strength and inspiration for me. She’s also a great runner and an accomplished athlete, with a long story in endurance sports. She started as a cyclist, until she transitioned to running when she was in her 20s, and later on to trail and mountain running. She’s competed in 4 world mountain and trail running championships, she’s placed 9th in a European championship, she’s won national titles, she’s placed top 30 in the new york city marathon and many more accomplishments.

We’re here to talk to Rita about two topics: how she balances having a full time job and being a high level athlete, and how she managed to deal with a big injury which kept her away from running for over 6 months. We’re going to give some advice and tips on how it’s possible to train at a high level while working 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, and what’s been particularly helpful for her when treating her hamstring injury and how she handled the return to running, with the aim to point out what’s useful and what’s not, so that as many athletes as possible can apply these principles and ideas to their own situations, regardless of their level or how fast or slow they can run.

09 Aug 2023090. Wilfredo Benitez | Nutrition for health and performance - Reposted00:35:00

On Pace Wellness is a company based in Portland, Oregon, which helps endurance athletes to optimize their nutrition for health, wellness and performance.

We chat with Wilfredo Benitez, head nutritionist at On Pace Wellness, USATF certified coach and trail runner, about the importance of a balanced nutrition for athletes.

How and what we eat have the potential to help make our goals a reality or to impede our training and performance, while potentially reducing our health at the same time. Nutrition plays a major role in the body's performance, including its health. It's important to understand some basics behind nutrition and help the body perform the best it can, whether that be athletically or just functionally.

We hope you can find some valuable information and tips for a more aware relationship with food and exercise.

18 Sep 2024146. A conversation around weight, body image, eating disorders and relative energy deficiency in sport01:00:44

In this episode Francesco is joined by coach Andy for a conversation around weight, Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, eating disorders and body image in endurance athletes and endurance sports, particularly trail running.

We give some facts and figures and we share our own thoughts and experiences with these issues. We’re glad that they are becoming less and less of a taboo, but there’s still a lot to be done to prevent them and to help the athletes and the coaches and build a better training and sport ecosystem in general.

30 Mar 2022021. Emelie Forsberg | Focus on the little things that make us happy00:43:36

Emelie Forsberg is one of the most accomplished and inspiring trail runners of our generation, a mother, an entrepreneur, a farmer and so much more. She is from Sweden but she lives and trains in Romsdal, Norway.

I met Emelie for the first time at Giir di Mont, (31km, 2700m elevation mountain race in Italy) in 2014. I had raced the day before and I was traveling back home with my girlfriend when we decided to stop for the night in Premana, to watch Giir di Mont and cheer the runners, because I knew she would be running there with Kilian. We slept in a sleeping bag under the stars, and the day after we woke up early in the morning to go out on the course. And that was my first memory of Emelie!

In this conversation we cover many topics that I've found incredibly inspiring and related to the present time: the development of her athletic career after giving birth to her second daughter last year, where she still finds the motivation and drive to train at a high level after so many years and achievements in the sport, her projects with her farm in Romsdal and Moonvalley, the state and the future of our sport, in particular related to female athletes.

Check out Moonvalley's products here! Energy bars, chocolate, protein bars, coffee and more!

06 Nov 2024153. Vic Johnson | Nutrition principles for outdoor athletes - part 100:55:22

Katie Schide is a professional trail runner for The North Face from the US, living in France.

Katie is one of the most well known and established trail runners in the world: she’s just been awarded the second place of the Trail Runner of the Year Award presented by Freetrail, and as well as the second place of the historic Ultra Runner of the Year Award by Ultrarunning Magazine.

In this episode we talk about Katie’s training and approach to racing, dealing with sponsors, media and brands, living in France and about the current state of the sport of trail running.

10 Jan 2024111. Common misconceptions in training for trail and ultra running01:17:43

In this episode we talk about some common misconceptions in training for trail and ultras.

With the recent increase in participation in trail and ultrarunning and more and more people coming to trail running from the roads or other endurance sports, team sports, or from being sedentary, we felt a need to discuss some common myths and not always accurate ideas about training for trail and ultras, such as that training for trails and ultras will make you slow, that you have to live in the mountains in order to succeed at trail running, that you have to commit to either roads or trails.

How can se make informed decisions on whether we should take a rest day or not, whether we're running too much or too hard, what should we do if life gets in the way and we need to skip one or two sessions? What should we prioritize and what are the things that matter the most when we are out there trying to achieve a training session?

How do we know when and if we should change plans and deviate from the program?

We like to look at training in a holistic way, and there's always a certain level of independence when it comes to managing your training. Communication with your coach is key, and so are many other areas of your life that are not directly related to training, but have an impact on it: nutrition, sleep, recovery, work and family life.

These are the main topics of discussion of this episode in collaboration with Daniel Rowland, a Vert.run coach and an accomplished endurance athlete.

Enjoy!

15 Feb 2023065. Kaytlyn Gerbin | The Pro Trail Runners Association & going all in as a pro athlete01:23:19

Kaytlyn Gerbin is a professional trail runner sponsored by North Face living in Washington, United States.

Kaytlyn has established herself as one of the best endurance athletes in the world: she’s been on the podium of two of the most iconic and competitive ultra trail races in the world - Western States in 2017 and UTMB in 2022 - and she’s a true lover of the sport, of the mountains and the wild spaces of the Pacific North West.

After the pandemic, Kaytlyn decided to take a break from her job as a scientist to fully focus on running professionally, and now she’s not only active as a pro athlete but she also has a strong voice inside the trail running community.  She’s part of the board of the Pro Trail Runners Association - a non profit association with the mission to help the athletes share their opinions and needs, and be an active part in shaping the future of our sport.

In this episode, we talk about her growth as an athlete, her decision to leave her job as a scientist, the differences that we see between trail running in the US and in Europe, her involvement in the pro trail runners association, its idea and mission and how she’s contributing to the project.

01 Feb 2023063. Coach Lab with Daniel Rowland | From planning to practice: how to set up your training week00:57:17

How do we go from setting our goals for the season to actually setting up a plan or a strategy in order to achieve them?

This is the main topic of this episode with coach Daniel Rowland, a trail and ultramarathon runner and Vert.run coach, one of the most interesting Twitter profiles I follow and a great expert in endurance science.

We will talk about the concept of microcycle vs macrocycle, what should be included and how long it should be; how to set up your microcycle, the key elements, matching the focus of the macrocycle and the choice and order of the sessions; how to monitor your training load and the key metrics for it. Finally, we will give a few practical examples to better understand how your typical microcycle (which often coincides with your training week) could look like.

Enjoy!

08 Feb 2023064. Thomas Krejci | Founder of Run2gether, African athletes coming to the trails01:09:31

Thomas Krejci is the founder of Run2gether, an Austrian road and trail running team supported by On Running.

The motto "Run2gether" does not only refer to just running training together. The team is made up by European and Kenyan runners who want to learn from each other, support each other, achieve goals together and benefit from each other on different levels. Run2gether is more than just a running team, it is also active with many educational and humanitarian projects in different villages in Kenya and it organizes training camps in Austria and Kenya.

Two of the strongest mountain runners in the world are part of this team: the Mountain Running World Cup 2022 winners Joyce Njeru and the world uphill champion Patrick Kipngeno. Some athletes, like Geoffrey Ndungu (a 2:08 marathoner) are also competing in the Golden Trail World Series.

Run2gether is a reality not just within the sport of trail running, and is a great example of how through sport we can have a much broader impact on our society.
