29 Jan 2020Episode 11 - Puzzles & How We Make Them Interesting00:35:42

A free form discussion about using Puzzles as a Game Master and how we  make puzzles interesting and engage our players in the right way to  ensure everyone at the table is given the opportunity to play with  puzzles they way they want to. This discussion is inspired by a question  that was provided to us on twitter, and we meander through our answer  in a free form, podcast style.

We touch on:

1) Our level of interest using and playing with puzzles.

2) How we incorporate puzzles as Game Masters into our TTRPGs.

3) How we build puzzles into different pillars of the game to make them  fun.

4) How we design puzzles in a forgiving way.

5) How we try to make them interesting.

23 Oct 2019Episode 8 - The Interrupt, A Delve Into A Great Game Master Tool, Role Play Chat00:48:45

A free form, essay discussion about a great Game Master tool: The  Interrupt. This advanced Game Master tool is something you shouldn't run your games without as it allows you to naturally present situations to your players to force them to rethink their priorities you can really take control of your story's pace and add depth to your games. We go over the definition and talk about how we like to use this amazing tool in our games. Our chat also takes us to some of our favorite examples. The elements we talk about can be used individually or in combination with one another to help you build strong interrupts that will enrich your games. These elements are distilled in our short video which can be found here:

https://youtu.be/gxiXOxzX4ow

The strategies to creating strong interrupts are:

1) Tailoring the interrupt to a specific hero's bonds, past or ideals.

2) Make it consequential, the players should be able to look at the scenario and be able to deduce that something bad may happen if they don't engage with it. You could also consider giving them a reward if they succeed at solving the issue.

3) Take the opportunity to showcase lore, history or factions. Interrupts are a good opportunity to do exposition.

4)  When things get slow, change the pillar of the game. Think about how the interrupt you are using can present a different pillar of the game to the table and use it to take your party there.

5) Use Seeding! Interrupts and seeding go very well together. Use a seed you've planted in the past to make your interrupt feel like it's a part of the world. Or plant several seeds for the first time with your interrupt.

04 Mar 2020Episode 13 - How To Elevate Ambiance In Your D&D Or TTRPG Game00:28:49

Before you pull out the candles for your next #DnD game, listen in to  our lessons learnt on how to elevate ambiance and tone at your table!  Game Master's often shoot for a specific tone in their game, and a solid  ambiance can go a long way to help support the tone and mood you are  trying to establish. In this discussion we go over 6 lessons we've  learnt the hard way so you don't have to! They will help you level up  the ambiance by going above and beyond the usual elements, such as music  and lighting.

 We touch on:

 - Use of the voice.

 - Considering the space and seating.

 - Temperature Control.

- Descriptive Wording.

 - Ensure Tone and Ambiance are working together.

- Not forcing the tone.

- Props, handouts and terrain.

- Consider the season or IRL holidays.

09 Sep 2020Challenging & Enabling Players, The Delicate Balance A Game Master Must Strike In A Tabletop RPG - S2E2 01:10:05
Striking the right balance between challenging and enabling your players is a needed skill for Game Masters in the hobby. Building challenges for players builds up tension, creates payoff but do it too much and you risk to frustrate the people around the table. Creativity shines and narrative goes in fun and unexpected ways if you enable your players, but again, if you do it too much your world will lose consistency and players will lose purpose.  A balance is needed, but it's easier said than done! In today's episode we talk about the elegant dance a game master needs to do when enabling and challenging their table.  Role Play Chat is a Podcast where your hosts Chris and Mat sit down and chat about #ttrpg (such as #DungeonsandDragons, Fates, Warhammer or Call of Cthulhu) and other tabletop #RPG related topics. This week I'm joined by Makenzie De Armas to talk designing monsters! Every game, every system has monsters (in some sense) and they play a critical component to telling stories. So how do the pros do it? How can we build fun monsters for folks to run, players to fight against and designers to build! We go over: - Some "broken" monster stories and how to balance them;

- Monster statblock design principles,

- A peak behind the curtain on how monster's are designed at the wizard's tower, and

- Advice for adapting content from other sources into a monster.

20 Jan 2021Adventure Building With Brennan Lee Mulligan (Part 1) - S2E13 00:52:12
One of the central components of a Tabletop RPG is the adventure. These segments of a campaign can be as long or as short as you like and often times offer up a good opportunity for GMs to propel the narrative forward by using components of your player character's past or future objectives.  We are also excited to be joined by the one and only Brennan Lee Mulligan in this week's Deep Dive. You know him his as: The creator and amazing DM for #Dimension 20, the CollegeHumor D&D actual play show He hosts Adventuring Academy, a vodcast about all things tabletop where he and his guests share incredible insight about playing and running  games. He also performed in many CollegeHumor sketches (CEO series) and he made many memorable appearances in Umm actually and Game changer.  We had so much fun chatting that the discussion went a little long, and took a few segues into topics such as improv tricks, roleplay strategies and comedic tone. 31 Dec 2019Episode 10 - The Pufferfish Moment, A Simple Way To Improve Role-Play In Your Game00:44:57

A free form, essay discussion about a great Game Master and Player tool:  The Pufferfish moment. Is your D&D group struggling with role play?  Does your TTRPG group want to improve their spotlight management? Try  the Pufferfish Moment! This simple yet versatile variant of the talking  stick helps Game Masters and Players alike to provide more structure to  the ins and outs of roleplaying, because lets face it, we aren't all  professional actors! I know, it sounds a little silly but ever since we  started using it, our game has improved tremendously. These dual talking  sticks help solve common role-playing issues by helping with:

1) Spotlight management.

2) Another way to facilitate pillar change.

 3) Creates a clear distinction between when the players are in  character.

4) It structures Roleplay in a very natural way.

We also discuss some interesting variations and methods of using the  puffefish to explore and add complexity to this amazing Dungeon Master  tool!

21 Dec 2020Building Dynamic Combat Environments In a Tabletop RPG - S2E1001:25:32

Combat is a core pillar in most TTRPGs. Even in games or systems that are role play heavy, combat encounters often play a critical role in the game as a story telling tool or method of confrontation. To make combat fun, engaging and entertaining, we have found that the forum of the combat, the environment if you will, is just  as important as why or who the party is fighting. In this week's episode Chris and Mat talk about what elements we like to add to our locations to ensure that combat is dynamic, engaging and fun.

28 Oct 2020Halloween Themed Games - S2E701:17:02

Spooky, scary, horrific or silly Halloween games can take many forms and can be inspired by so many things in media.  And that is one of the things that makes it such a great theme - it's flexibility!  In today's episode Chris and I discuss what makes a Halloween game special and we go through a list of things that we like to use for inspiration when prepping a Halloween Game for our tabletop RPG groups.

21 Oct 2020GM Well-Being & Our Strategies For Dealing With Stressors In Our Tabletop RPG -S2E601:08:57

Being a Dungeon Master or Game Master can be taxing. Despite being loads of fun, sometimes finding the balance between running a fun game, managing prep time and our daily lives, this wonderful hobby of ours can feel like it adds stress and anxiety into our lives. In this week's episode Chris and I take an introspective look at the things that cause us stress or anxiety in our games, then we share strategies we employ to try and combat them. Full disclosure, we vent a little haha, but it felt good and hopefully listening to us can also help you feel good too! We play TTRPG for fun after all and it's important  to keep your well-being front and center as you play.

09 Jun 2021Lore & Exposition With Roxane "Arikanthus"01:21:42
The traditions, stories, legends and myths of the inhabitants of your setting make up a rich tapestry that contribute to a player's sense of immersion when playing in a TTRPG. Lore comes in all shapes and sizes! When we game master a game sometimes we create it ourselves and other times it is given to us in modules, or handbooks, the trick though is how you showcase it to your players. In today's episode we talk about lore and exposition.  We are also joined by a special guest: Roxane, also known as Arikanthus & The Tipsy Geek. 03 Jun 2020Episode 18 RAILROADING, SANDBOXING & BRANCHING A spectrum of GM styles and preferences01:11:59

We tackle the age old debate of sandbox vs railroad.

It's a topic that has come up a number of times, so we figured we would share our thoughts on the topic. These two concepts live on a spectrum where a healthy balance between both seems to work best for most. But where do we find ourselves on this spectrum and why?

In the episode we talk about:

 - ThinkDM's definition of purely sandbox and purely railroad. His article and analysis can be found here: https://thinkdm.org/2018/07/07/railroad-vs-sandbox/

- Where we think we stand on the spectrum and why.

 - Why the term railroad gets a bad reputation.

- The role of simulations and trust in determining style.

- Giving advice to new DMs trying to run games in a certain style.

- Our attempt at finding the perfect balance between the two: Branching.

Enjoy!

14 Feb 2020Episode 12 - Upgrade Your Traps with these 7 key elements00:31:41

It's a TRAP!

PART 1:

A free form discussion about using Traps as a Game Master and how we make them interesting and avoid some of the pitfalls that comes with them. This discussion is inspired by questions that was provided to us on twitter, and we answer in a free form, podcast style.

We touch on:

1) What to do if the party faces a dungeon full of traps, but does not have a thief-type character?

2) How to avoid the game from halting, because of the many rolls players ask to make when exploring areas with potential traps?

3) Should traps be just damage/no damage and what else can they be?

4) How to give purpose to your traps, so they don't feel pointless?

PART 2:

Are your traps boring? Want to do more with you traps in your next #DnD or #TTRPG session? In this episode, we give you 7 tips on how to make traps fun and meaningful in your game.

The 7 things to consider are:

1) Integration of traps with other elements

2) Why is the trap there? Give it purpose

3) Variability of skill and diversity of challenge

4) How was it built? Give it lore/history

5) Puzzly traps - Easy to find, but hard to deal with

6) Frontload information - Bringing tension to every check

7) Make traps more than straight up damage - Alarm, environment change, conditions and more….

19 May 2021Player Behaviour: How Players React To Risks - S2E2301:13:58

Player types! A topic that most TTRPG creators address in their shows or podcasts. Chris & I take a different approach in this week's episode where we give you our take on player types - which is instead to talk about player behavior types. In this initial episode (which may eventually be a mini series) we take a deep dive on a how players respond to to risk in the game and how that affects the way they play.

Enjoy! Chris and Mat.

18 Nov 2022Should characters die before their player is ready? with Sean and Shannon S3E2001:08:04
Character death is without a doubt the biggest consequence a player can be subjected to in this hobby. Working out when and how a character dies though is not something everyone agrees on. Should the dice dictate or should a player have a say? In today's episode I try something new. Join Shannon and Sean from Paradice Productions as we talk about a GMing philosophy Sean has developped. One of the elements of this ideology is that a player character should only die if their player is ready for them to die. Join the three of us as we dissect this philosophy and what impacts it may have on a game.  If you liked Shannon & Sean's insights (who am I kidding, of course you did) you can find them on twitter at @sroby25 (https://linktr.ee/shannonroby) & @odo_sean (https://linktr.ee/odo_sean) respectively.  Enjoy! 13 Aug 2019Episode 6 - How to Make Player Absences A Positive Experience In Your Ongoing RPG Campaign00:39:46

Chris and Mat sit down to chat about how to keep your adventure going even if players can't make it to the gaming table. We will go over the strategies we use to make sure the expectation of attendance is clear to our players and we talk about the ways we cope with players missing games. Some of the strategies are easy to implement but others are more involved. They include:

1) Making the absent PC vanish temporarily.

2) Having the PC follow along, doing minimal actions.

3) Having someone else play this PC for the session.

4) Playing a filler episode or side quest.

5) Getting the player to help come up with a narrative reason for the character's absence.

6) Running a one-shot game using the same setting to help expand lore, NPC background, etc.

3) Engage the plot and setting when possible.

4) Try to plan or build consensus with other characters.

5) Have opinions, make your character take a stance.

6) Use talking sticks, or pufferfish moments!

7) The importance of setting boundaries and talking things out before roleplaying.

8) Engaging with NPCs.

9) Frequency, timing and using in game events.

23 Jul 2019Episode 5 - How To Prepare Combat In A TTRPG00:33:49

In this episode Chris and Mat sit down to chat about how to prepare awesome combat encounters. We will go over the steps we take to make meaningful and fun combat encounters in our games of Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer and other Tabletop Role-Playing Games. The tips we will touch on relate to the following:

1) Thinking about what you are using combat for. What are your intentions?

2) Add objectives to your combat, they can be mutually exclusive or layered to add complexity.

3) Create awesome rewards and use failure to move plot and intrigue forward.

- What are the circumstances that led up to this fight? Think of:

4) Who the party is fighting, which factions, what are their tactics?

5) Where the fight is happening, does the encounter have to happen here? why?

6) When is the encounter happening? Is the combat time sensitive, will there be a suprise or reinforcements?

7) Using possible solutions as inspiration for diversifying your encounters. Does your encounter include the proper tools for alternative methods of success?

Dungeons can take on many shapes and sizes from sprawling complex canvern systems to small tavern basements. In today's episode we focus on the smaller scale dungeons, of 3 to 8 rooms in size and how you can take the things that make huge dungeons and use that to make a small condensed experience that is more digestable. Join me and my friend of the show Alex as we talk about how we build and run tiny dungeons in our games, what we do to plan them and how we make them fun and memorable for our players.

16 Mar 2022Consequences with Jeremy Cobb from Three Black Halflings S3E300:54:26

A surefire way to make a players actions and decisions impactful is to make them consequential. Showing a player or a party the effects of their decisions, or better yet, making them deal with those decisions by creating new opportunities and obstacles for them can really imerse them in the world and make them feel ownership over the narrative that is being constructed. This week I am joined by Jeremy from Three Black Halflings (amoung other things!) to take a deep dive on the topic and help you understand how to make your players actions consequential all while keeping the game fun and enjoyable for all.

11 Sep 2019Episode 7 - Elevate Your One on One Adventures00:48:22
Chris and Mat chat about how to run one on one TTRPG sessions. We go over the pros and cons of this format and strategies to integrate them into your group game. We also give ways to elevate these games beyond your players expectations. Some of the elements we talk about are easy to implement but others are more involved. These strategies include:   1) Tailoring the experience to the person you are running the game for! 2) Use the intimacy of the session to do exposition the character would already know, but that the player doesn't! 3) Reveal a big plot point, a hidden secret or something special about a NPC to the character you are playing with. 4) Give the character challenges in skills they excel at, give them a chance to shine beyond what they can do in a group setting.  Our community question this week is: If you were given the choice, would you prefer to play a campaign one on one with a game master you get along well with or would you prefer playing in a group that has great team synergy?  Let us know your preference and tell us why! 29 Dec 2020Be A Better TableTop Player By Accepting Failure - S2E1101:06:40

Failure is a big part of playing D&D or any other TTRPG. Missed attacks, botched stealth checks or failed social interactions with NPCs happen all the time. The potential for more serious failures, like the loss of a player character are also always lurking just around the corner. Theses failures or the potential for failure however shouldn't take away for your game, infact it should enhance it. In this week's episode we chat about how and why would should try to make yourself resilient to failure in your games, because the way you react to failure has a big affect on the game.

Role Play Chat is a Podcast where your hosts Chris and Mat sit   down and chat about #ttrpg (such as #DungeonsandDragons, Fates,   Warhammer or Call of Cthulhu) and other tabletop #RPG related topics.

Enjoy! Chris and Mat.

06 Oct 2021Character Bleed and Consent With Allie From Dice Drop: Evolution S2 E3101:06:32

However, do this comes with some caveats! In this week's episode I am joined by Allie from Dice Drop Evolution to discuss how character bleed and player bleed can affect your game (the good and t he bad) and ensuring that everyone at the  table is on the same page as it relates to roleplaying these potentially emotionally loaded situations.   Enjoy! 24 Jun 2020EPISODE 19 - HOME BASES AND AFFILIATIONS The effect it has on our games.01:07:27

In #TTRPGs, most party eventually end up managing some kind of HOME BASE. It could be a keep where they raise an army, a temple to honor a god, or even a tavern to gather people and rumors. In any case, having a headquarter or stronghold has a lot of benefits for your gaming experience, but it also brings its fair share of challenges. In this episode, we give our thoughts on THE EFFECT OF HAVING A HOME BASE, based on twitter questions from the community. We chat about:

-  What is considered a home base ?

-  What function does it serve?

-  What are the benefits and challenges of having a home base.

-  Our personal preferences and the elements we focus on.

-  Design ideas and supplement options.
