19 Nov 2021ROKER RAPPORT PODCAST SPECIAL: A Life in Football - The Ricky Sbragia Story!01:57:49

Well Lads and Lasses, our Chris Wynn had the opportunity to talk to the legend that is Ricky Sbragia about his career as a player, his ridiculously successful coaching career, and his time as a dedicated - yet reluctant - first team manager who guided Sunderland to safety in the Premier League following the sudden departure of Roy Keane.

What’s the crack?

  • Ricky started out his footballing life as a Birmingham player, later joining Walsall, Blackpool and York City where he played under the likes of Viv Busby and Denis Smith alongside a few players Sunderland fans would come to know well later on - which periods, players and managers stood out for him?

  • Why did he make the move into coaching - and how many lads were left at York City after Denis and Viv left for Roker - besides a certain Bobby Saxton of course...

  • Finally following in his fellow York City legends footsteps he joined Sunderland as a coach in 1994 - what were his first impressions of the club and manager at the time Mick Buxton?

  • How were his experiences working alongside legends like Monty, George Herd, Pop Robson and then again with the great Sacko under Peter Reid?

  • Who were his favourite players to work with, and who was an absolute pain in the arse?

  • The years of success under Reidy and then the decline following his departure - how did Ricky make the move to Manchester United to work alongside Mike Phelan and Sir Alex Ferguson?

  • What were the big differences between the coaching styles of the two sides - besides the level of talent available to him?

  • Did he ever do anything to aggravate Sir Alex - and if he did how long did he avoid him for afterwards?

  • His thoughts on the old reserve system - where thousands would turn up to watch a mix of youth and experience. Is it a superior system to the one currently in use in his opinion?

  • Ricky's move back to Sunderland after a call from Cookie to coach under Roy Keane, the highs and lows of what followed and his transition to manager following Roy’s sudden departure - how did Niall Quinn convince him to take the job on, despite Ricky knowing how his relationship with the players would change.

  • His decision to resign after guiding Sunderland to survival - how different is managing first team sides - is it as rewarding as working with the young players?

  • Big Sam’s war room revelations - so what was that like?

  • His career since leaving Sunderland for the second time and his opinion of what went wrong for Sunderland under Ellis Short;

  • Ricky gives his thoughts on current Sunderland manager Lee Johnson - tells us why he turned down Lee’s job offer - and gives his view on the current Sunderland owner KLD and direction of the club.

All this and so much more. A deep dive into a fascinating career with an absolute delight of a man who may well have preferred to stay out of the limelight - but who certainly deserves every bit of acknowledgement and praise he gets in our opinion. Thanks for listening and enjoy! #SAFC #YCFC #MUFC #EFL #EPL #RickySbragia

24 Nov 2021ROKER RAPPORT PODCAST: A game of three thirds - quick reaction (almost) to Shrewsbury 1-1 Sunderland!00:20:47

Our Chris was joined immediately after the match (aye there was a funny mix up we only resolved earlier today) by Malc and Bomber to go over how exactly we managed to avoid a win, and to try slip a few clichés in while they were at it.

What's the crack?

  • A promising first half performance from the Lads was welcomed, as was that great goal from Pritchard... So what went wrong with that second half against 10 men?

  • Would we be less disappointed if the performance had been more consistent and we still failed to get the winner?

  • How are/were the lads feeling about getting 4 points from the 6 available - any sign of panic yet?

  • Was that a red card?

  • How did they expect the reaction to the result to play out on the socials, and were they right?

  • Any positives to take from that at all?

  • How did the move to Sunderland come about, and what was the plan under Roy Keane when Mike first joined?

  • How hard was it for the coaching and fitness staff going from manager to manager in such short periods of time?
  • Why is it some players come back almost brand new from long injuries, but someone else can come back just that bit slower? Is it general wear and tear, or are there other factors to consider?
  • Who were Mike's favourite players, managers and staff to work with, and what decisions did the club make that the medical team looked at with absolute despair?
  • The rotten core; Mike gives his opinion on that particular theory...

  • How much involvement did our new owner have in the appointments of Johnson, Speakman and Davison? Well, officially.. Nothing at all.. Aye.

  • Imagining a world where nobody needs to worry about what's occurring off the pitch and we don't need to talk constantly about the owners and hierarchy..*

*Editors note: Probably a little optimistic of the lads here but... let them dream for a while. Aye.

23 Sep 2020ROKER RAPPORT XTRA: Sunderland v Peterborough United w/ Posh Chairman - Darragh MacAnthony!00:56:46

-EXPLICIT CONTENT-

Chris is joined this week by a special guest in the always outspoken (and occasionally controversial) Peterborough United Chairman - Darragh MacAnthony - to see what he's been up to since last he was on and hear his personal opinions and thoughts on the situation the league is in, the restrictions that are in place and how he's been navigating it all as a club owner.

What are we talking about?

  • Should probably start by saying the views expressed by Darragh are his... and he gives his frank, honest and uncut opinion on the Covid-19 Situation and the impact it had on the last season from his perspective;

  • The EFL; With the pandemic unfolding the way it did and football grinding to a halt as a consequence, what does Darragh think about the way everything was handled by the governing bodies of the sport and what were his interactions with the other owners and EFL Chief Exec Rick Parry while it was all going on?

  • Managers; What are his thoughts on Sunderland's management situation, and why does he think the one manager we should have been looking at is the one currently in residence at London Road;

  • When Posh duo Siriki Dembélé and Reece Brown were diagnosed with Covid-19 recently, Darragh wasn't too pleased and had some things to say about what he wants the players to do to reduce the risk of infection while the season is underway;

  • Marcus Maddison; What went wrong there, and what are Darragh's thoughts on his former star player and his future career chances?

  • Sunderland and Posh are both favourites for promotion, so what does he think of both our chances?

  • What are his thoughts on things like the resignation of SAFC Chairman Stewart Donald, and fan interaction? Is it easier to just be honest with the fans, did he see all that trouble brewing, and would he pay £35,000,000 plus on a club in our position?

  • Darragh looks at the youth system he has in place, and gives his opinion on the importance of data models in a clubs scouting and recruitment strategy;

  • Looking forward to the match; What result is he hoping for, and do the results matter that much this early in the season?

All this and much more, some opinions expressed may be considered controversial and we can't say as a Podcast we agree with all of them, but they are Darragh's to express. A great chat overall with one of the biggest characters in the EFL and a fascinating insight into the workings of club ownership.

  • The away support was, as expected, absolutely class! Well in lads and lasses! Did us all proud!

  • Speaking of pride - we may have been outgunned but Lee Johnson made sure we played our game still, and regardless of the score, it was lovely to see!

  • Turns out some of these Arsenal lads aren't that bad... Fair play and congratulations to young Eddie Nketiah - some talent there!

  • All this and more as the lads turn their attention back to the coming burst of league fixtures, starting with our friends Donny...

18 May 2020ROKER RAPPORT SPECIAL: Sunderland Til I Die - with Former Captain George Honeyman!00:57:39

We picked up exactly where we left off on his last appearance on the Pod, as our former SAFC Captain George joined us to talk about what's occurred since last we spoke, the love he has and always will have for the club that raised him, those run ins at the end of last season, the strength of Grant Leadbitter following his performance down Portsmouth, the insanity of the Luke O'Nien fan incident, his honest opinion on the dismissal of former manager Jack Ross, and his thoughts on having to leave the only club he ever really wanted to play for...

Breaking from tradition, we'd like to up George's rating to a solid 10.

26 May 2021ROKER RAPPORT PODCAST: Sunderland AFC End of Season Review & Retained List Reaction!00:39:29

A few of the RR Editorial lads - Rich Speight, Chris Wynn and Martin Wanless - managed to squeeze some time in between meetings late this morning to:

  • Look at Sunderland's end to the season against Lincoln at the weekend... Eventually...

  • React to the retained list the club released yesterday; Was the release of so many players - including both Captains - a statement of intent?

  • Discuss what changes we may expect from KLD, Speakman, Johnson and the recruitment team at the club over the coming summer, and look at the contracts offered to Wyke, McGeady, Hume and O'Nien;

  • Ask if there's a future for players returning from loans; Martin and Chris make a shocking Dobson related admission...

  • React to some of the more outright abusive comments and behaviour directed toward the players and management from a small but vocal section of the Sunderland fan base; Is comparing an outgoing club captain to... Hitler... maybe a step too far for example? Who knows eh?

  • Look at whether - in their opinion - Lee Johnson deserves a chance to do what he was brought in to do;

All this and much more...

As always we'd like to thank you all for listening to us chat away this season, Lads and Lasses!

21 Nov 2021ROKER RAPPORT PODCAST: Reviewing Sunderland 2-0 Ipswich and looking ahead to Shrewsbury!00:34:27

Our Gav was joined earlier today by Martin and Phil to go over yesterday's return to winning ways for Lee Johnson's Lads against Paul Cook's Ipswich side, and to briefly look ahead to Shrewsbury away in the League this Tuesday!

What's the crack?

  • That's a f**king relief - Nice to be talking about a win again isn't it?

  • What did the lads make of the performance overall?

  • Lee knew he was under pressure and the players were clearly a bit nervous about their return - how much did they need this result?

  • Another injury nightmare; should we look at the loan market for an instant fix to the left back issue - despite the performance from Luke O'Nien in that position yesterday - or struggle through until January?

  • Building back momentum; how are we going to approach the visit to Shrewsbury this Tuesday, and do we think the system is going to change sooner rather than later?

  • Who stood out for the Lads on the pitch, and just how vital were the changes Lee made to the side to win the game?

  • How good was that triple save from Hoffmann... and should McGeady be utilised as an impact sub from now on?

03 Jul 2021ROKER RAPPORT PODCAST: Catching up with former SAFC & ITFC midfielder - Tommy Miller!01:16:23

Yes - SAFC return to action against fierce local rivals Spennymoor Town in a match of not two, but three halves - such is the competitive intensity of the tie. Knowing all this, our resident Deep Diver and walking Sunlun fact file - Mr Chris Wynn - decided to pull in a local lad who knows a thing or two about today’s opposition... then spent an hour or so avoiding talking about the match/training exercise itself as we go back through his memories of Joe Royle, Chris Turner, Big Mick McCarthy, Keano, Quinny, Paulo Di Canio and many more of the characters that both helped and hindered the Shotton-born MLF’s career...

We are of course speaking to Mr Tommy Miller - the current manager of Spenny, and former Sunderland, Ipswich and Hartlepool midfielder.

Featuring:

  • Memories of Roker Park as a bairn; When did Tommy start following the Lads?

  • The old YTS scheme; We’ve not heard a single former player tell us there was anything wrong with it - would some lads coming through in this era perhaps benefit from a similar youth experience?

  • Tommy played under some of the biggest and most notorious personalities in the modern (depending on your age like) English game; Who did he learn the most from throughout his long professional career, and who did he think should’ve been given more of a chance/helping hand when they needed one?

  • His time at Sunderland; Like every single one of us, Tommy wanted to play for his local side, and he finally got the chance… so what was life like at the club during the frankly insane couple of years he was here and why does he think things didn’t turn out quite the way he wanted them to?

  • Today’s earth shattering fixture; Is he just happy football is back?

All this and a hell of a lot more, as there’s absolutely nothing else occurring today in the footballing world. So strap yourself in, hire an interpreter if you struggle with northern accents vs zoom technology, and enjoy the ride! It’s Miller Time!

18 Jul 2020ROKER RAPPORT PODCAST: Reacting to the resignation of Sunderland AFC Chairman - Stewart Donald!00:30:19

It's been quite the week. It's actually been quite the few days but aye, the lads convened an emergency pod that had to go out before the other emergency Pod to quickly react (with a touch of reality) to the news Stewart Donald came up north for the first time in ages, arranged a meeting alongside his cronies, insulted half the fanbase, then essentially told the fans they could buy the club for a mere £37,000,000 before implying once again that nothing is anything to do with him, but it is, but it isn't... then let his right hand men of the last couple years leave the club and then... resigned as Chairman.

Aye.

27 Jul 2020Roker Rapport Podcast: With former SAFC Captain, Coach and Assistant Manager - Paul Bracewell!00:53:46

Chris Wynn had the opportunity to chat with Brace (while he was waiting for some football to resume) looking back at his three stints at the club as a player through the 80s and 90s and his years behind the scenes! You can listen for FREE on AcastiTunesSpotify, & YouTube - get stuck in!

What are we talking about?

  • Back to the beginning: Joining the club under Alan Durban in 1983 as a young player on the up, and his thoughts on Alan and his vision as a manager.

  • Leaving us (the first time) to head to glory at Everton alongside Reidy in midfield in that incredible Toffees side of the mid 80s;

  • The injury - resulting from a typically hefty Billy Whitehurst challenge - that dogged his playing career, forced him to change his style of play and amplified his fixation with playing at all costs, any way he could;

  • Returning to Sunderland again under Denis Smith and the ride the Lads went on over that period;

  • His issues with the Sunderland boards decision to give him just a year’s contract that led to his move to Newcastle under Keegan;

  • His return again under Peter Reid as a player/Assistant manager and their title winning season together;

  • His decision to chase more playing time at Fulham; Did Reidy understand why he felt he had to leave when he did?

  • Paul's return to Sunderland.. Again.. This time working at the Academy of Light before being moved up to First Team Coach and then Assistant Manager for Dick Advocaat and Big Sam in their rescue mission seasons in the Prem;

  • His disappointment over the way it all ended as we finally dropped from the top flight under David Moyes; Did Sam leaving the way he did seriously impact the lads behind the scenes?

  • His role now as an Elite Development Coach and consultant for Spurs and Grow Football, and his hopes for Sunderland to regain their place as a top side as soon as possible;

  • Rushing off to watch the footy...

Can’t understate how important this man has been for Sunderland over his 30+ year association with the club. A fantastic player, professional, captain, and coach.

Been a hell of a ride for Brace!
