Mento es un estilo de música folclórica jamaicana que alcanzó su punto máximo en los años 40/50. Luego, Ska emergió de Mento y combinó el jazz americano y el rhythm and blues. Tanto el Ska como el Mento han tenido una gran influencia en la música Reggae, y estos estilos han sido influenciados tanto por Estados Unidos como por Cuba de muchas maneras.
