16 Mar 2021 | The Lasso Way (Ted Lasso S1E1) | 00:46:24
We are proud to present the actual, official first episode of Richmond Til We Die (for realsies)! Like Ted himself, we feel a bit under-qualified but plan to get by with unshakeable determination, relentless positivity, a friend by our side, and a mustache that could win a blue ribbon at the Texas State Fair.On this episode, Christian, Brett, and Marisa have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 1: The Pilot. We point out the most convincing (and least believable) soccer moments, discuss the Sex Pistols and Walt Whitman, and drool over Kansas City barbecue. (seriously!) Then we share our own first concert / best concert experiences and lament the fact that there is a serious lack of 90s hip-hop on the show's soundtrack after this episode.Richmond Til We Die is a conversation where fans of the Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso (and curious newcomers) can come together to appreciate this cast of characters who make us laugh until we can hardly breathe one minute and then feel with the deepest parts of our hearts the next.Discussed On This Episode:Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (Psychological Review, 1943)The 15 Characteristics of Self-Actualizers (Psychological Review, 1943)Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life (Anne Lamott; Anchor, 1995)The Autobiography of Malcolm X (Malcolm X and Alex Haley; Grove Press, 1965)Do Goldfish Have a Three-Second Memory? Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! On this bonus episode we host New York Times best-selling author Gwenda Bond to discuss the theme of "rom-communism" that has been so pervasive in the second season of Ted Lasso. Luckily, Gwenda is an accomplished writer who has spent a good deal of time writing stories that fit within the rom-com genre - including her new book that is out this week, titled Not Your Average Hot Guy. In our conversation with Gwenda, we discuss the hallmarks of the rom-com genre, the ways in which the show adheres to and subverts rom-com conventions, and point out our favorite references in the "Rainbow" episode of Ted Lasso season 2. We also take some time to talk about Gwenda's work on a Young Adult fiction series which features a young Lois Lane (of the Superman comics) as the protagonist and ask her how she came to love the genre so deeply. And Mark was recently the recipient of the “I Stand With Her #HeForShe” Award at The 2021 Women In Medicine Summit. Dr. Tabatabai, who was able to join us partway through the episode, is a Nephrology Specialist in San Antonio, Texas. Sayed spends some of his free time writing fiction on the internet (which has been featured on NPR';s Weekend Edition Sunday) and the rest of it portraying the role of Darth Vader for the Star Wars Society of San Antonio for various charitable causes. Dr. Tabatabai regularly teams up with Dr. Shapiro on the Explore the Space podcast to talk about Ted Lasso. Together they started the #MedLasso hashtag on twitter, which has now become a virtual gathering place for medical professionals to bond over the show online. In our conversation with Mark and Sayed, we discussed some of their experiences with the show, the #MedLasso community, and the experience of pandemic medicine. We asked Mark how he came up with the idea of integrating Ted Lasso into his work on Explore the Space and chatted with Sayed about his fiction writing as a creative outlet. We talked about Robin Williams, the television show Scrubs, and the way the show champions the idea of "aspirational masculinity." We also wondered what Ted Lasso's specialization would be if he were a physician. Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this bonus episode Marisa, Christian, and Brett have a conversation with influential pastor and theologian Nadia Bolz-Weber. She is a renowned teacher and theologian, the founder of the House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, Colorado, as well as a three-time New York Times bestselling author. Once we began to notice all the spiritual imagery and high church references in Ted Lasso's second season, we knew we needed to have somebody on to discuss it all. We were so incredibly privileged to be joined by a someone as gracious and perceptive as Pastor Nadia, who is a door-opener rather than a gatekeeper when it comes to church, religion, and spirituality. Plus, she's a huge Ted Lasso fan (and we have Brené Brown to thank for that!). In addition to the show's religious imagery and high church jokes, we chatted with Nadia about the show's radical stance on grace and forgiveness, how fans can continue to love Nate, and why the show's tone and humor resonate with such a wide audience. Welcome back to the Dogtrack, Greyhounds! In this episode Marisa, Christian, and Brett have a conversation about Season 2, Episode 7: Headspace. We talk about the stress of Ted's professional therapeutic relationship with Dr. Sharon, the miscommunication between Keeley and Roy as they navigate their romantic relationship, and the unhealthy relationship Nate has with his father, his players, and social media. But it's not all bad! We also appreciate the wisdom of Higgins (and his pipe!), stake our claim on the origins of couples' jazz scatting, marvel at Beard's mastery of disapparition, and applaud Roy's skills in the department of playlist curation. Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation with Ted Lasso's emmy-winning editor, AJ Catoline. AJ and his counterpart Melissa McCoy are responsible for compiling the final edits of each Ted Lasso episode – AJ edits the even-numbered episodes while Melissa edits the odd-numbered ones. AJ's work on Season 1 Episode 10: The Hope That Kills You was recognized with an Emmy win in 2021 for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series. And AJ has also worked on a lot of shows we personally enjoy, such as Brockmire, Black Jesus, Flavor of Love and The Standups. In our conversation with AJ, he walks us through the editing process - also sometimes known as the "final re-write." We get into the editing choices for Ted's panic attack sequences, the jaw-dropping amount of visual effects that are seamlessly woven into the show, and ask AJ the most important question of all: When will we get a Ted Lasso blooper/outtakes reel?! Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Brett visits with Charlie Harding, host of Switched On Pop, as they discuss the incredible Ted Lasso Soundtrack. Charlie is a songwriter, music producer, author, music journalist, and the host of Switched On Pop. On their podcast Charlie and his co-host, musicologist Nate Sloan, explore the making and meaning of popular music. In this episode, Brett and Charlie take some time to appreciate the incredible work done by the music supervision team in the series by examining several songs and their placement in the show. Yes, you read that right – so much happened in this episode that we thought it would be best to split up our conversation into two parts so that we could be sure to cover everything. We spend some time appreciating the visuals and the music in the magnificent haircut scene, talk a lot about fathers and sons (so tricky – they should really write songs about it), and discuss the development of two awkward-but-sweet relationships in this episode: one platonic (Ted & Sharon), and one romantic (Rebecca & Sam). Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! Ted Lasso fans may also recognize Eniola from her brief cameo appearance on the show in Season 2, Episode 5: "Rainbow." Eniola appears as a player in the scene where Roy and Ted encourage Isaac to participate in a pickup football match to help him find his joy in the game again. Of course, it didn't take much acting for Eniola to look like one of the best players on the pitch. Though she recently retired from playing professionally, Eniola played for some of the biggest clubs in the world including the England & Great Britain National Teams, Chelsea, and Juventus. 14 Jun 2022 | LGBT+ Inclusion in Sports Media (with Jon Holmes) | 00:46:54
Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation with journalist Jon Holmes. Jon is the founder of Sports Media LGBT+, an organization that advocates for inclusion in media and journalism specifically, and sports in general. Jon is an experienced journalist and writer, and for many years led Sky Sports’ support for Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign. He launched Sports Media LGBT+ in August 2017 with the idea to harness the power of media and journalism in order to advocate for and amplify the voices of athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, and all others involved in sport who are LGBT+. In our conversation with Jon, we discussed the origins of Sports Media LGBT+, inclusion in sports media, supporters groups, and football clubs in general, as well as the recent coverage of 17-year-old Jake Daniels, the Blackpool FC midfielder who became the UK’s first active male professional footballer to come out publicly as gay in May 2022. Of course, Jon is also a fan of Ted Lasso, so we took some time to chat with him about his love for the show, its lack of representation when it comes to gay and queer characters, and the ways in which Ted Lasso (the show and the character) helps to address and dismantle toxic masculinity in sport. Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! Twenty Thousand Hertz is an award-winning podcast that reveals the stories behind the world's most recognizable and interesting sounds. The show is a product of world’s leading sound design studio, De Facto Sound - which regularly designs projects for worldwide brands like Nike, Bose, Netflix, and HBO. From Twenty Thousand Hertz's Show Description: "Ted Lasso is about more than just an incompetent soccer coach–it's about overcoming challenges by working together. And that's exactly what the show's sound team had to do when the pandemic hit just two episodes in. From creating crowds of thousands using just a few voices, to recording actors in their own closets, they managed to turn lockdown into an opportunity for innovation. 07 Sep 2022 | Ted Lasso S2E9: Reason Is Powerless in the Expression of Love | 00:49:11
WE'RE BACK ON THE DOGTRACK, GREYHOUNDS! In this episode Marisa, Christian, and Brett have a conversation about Season 2, Episode 9: Beard After Hours. As we make our way through this absurd episode of Ted Lasso, we talk about the major differences in tone, style, and aesthetic between this offering and every other installment of this incredible show. Our discussion brought up a few interesting questions, like: what (if anything) do creators owe fans of their work (if anything), and how charitable should fans be when presented with art that contrasts from a creator's usual offering? The three of us each had different reactions to this admittedly divisive episode, but our conversation helped us to mine a few luminous gems from the general darkness of the late-night Beard saga. We also took some time to examine what we learned about the character of Beard in this episode–particularly when it comes to his relationship with Jane and the things in his life which bring him meaning. There was also a record-amount of music used in this episode, and we know it goes without saying, but we definitely took some time to discuss a bunch of the needle drops as well. Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation with soccer icon Briana Scurry. Briana is best-known for her accomplishments as the starting goalkeeper for the United States Women's National Team, where she helped the squad win a World Cup and two Olympic gold medals. Briana is currently an assistant coach for the Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League and recently released a memoir titled MY GREATEST SAVE. In the book, she chronicles her journey from a gifted athletic kid growing up in Minneapolis to her triumph as a legendary goalkeeper. She also details her experience as a gay African-American woman making strides and spearheading change in a sport that was at the time predominately-white, predominately-suburban sport. In our conversation with Briana, we discussed her story and got into many of the themes of the book, including perseverance, mental health, and, ultimately – hope (be advised that there is some discussion of suicidal ideation in this episode). Fair warning, this conversation is a long one. In this particular reflection she wrote about how her favorite character in Ted Lasso is the "Believe Sign," which is linked in the show notes on our website. We chatted about hope, belief, community, found family, and whether it's possible to tape our beliefs back together after they are ripped apart. The conversation doesn't get too "churchy," but we do go deep on the inherent spirituality that manifests in a community with a shared meaning and purpose. It's a wonderful conversation, and we hope y'all enjoy the episode! Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In our spoiler-free "Season 3 Preview-in-air-quotes" Marisa, Christian, and Brett have a conversation about some of the key information for fans to bear in mind as we head into Season 3 of Ted Lasso! Marisa has all but run out of patience. Brett is an emotional wreck. Christian is... aroused??? All that can only mean one thing: the third season of our beloved show Ted Lasso is coming soon! In this episode, we chat about the official pieces of marketing and media that have been released by Apple and the Ted Lasso team in advance of the premier, and we recap the facts and figures that even casual Ted Lasso fans need to know before commencing their season 3 journey. We also highlight some of the key plot points that we expect this third installment to address and/or resolve while simultaneously trying (and Brett definitely failing) to refrain from spending too much energy hypothesizing about what lies in store. 21 Mar 2023 | What You Discover When Creativity Is Gone (with Marylee Fairbanks) | 00:46:29
Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Marisa and Brett have a conversation about Ted Lasso and musical theatre with Marylee Fairbanks. Marylee Fairbanks is a producer and performer who is known for her work in the first touring production of the musical Ragtime and the show I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change – which is the second-longest-running off-Broadway musical in American theatre history. In addition to her work on stage, Marylee is the co-producer and co-host of the Stages Podcast alongside her longtime friend and Broadway star Stephanie J. Block, who has starred in megahits like Wicked, The Cher Show, and Into the Woods. Given her subject-matter expertise, we invited Marylee on the show to chat about Ted Lasso and musical theatre. We also talked a lot about how Ted Lasso the show fosters connection, community, and empathy in ways that mirror many classics of the musical theatre genre and how creativity is still absolutely necessary – even in times of seeming scarcity. 23 Mar 2023 | Ted Lasso Meets March Madness (with Eric Garcia) | 00:50:57
Welcome to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation about Ted Lasso and college basketball with author and journalist Eric Garcia! Eric Garcia is a Washington, D.C.-based journalist focused on politics and policy and is currently the senior Washington correspondent for The Independent. (Yes, that Independent.) He also works as a columnist for MSNBC and makes regular appearances on radio and television. Previously, Eric has held positions at The Washington Post, The Hill, Roll Call, National Journal and MarketWatch. Eric is also the author of a book titled We're Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation, which was released back in August 2021. In the book, Eric weaves his own story together with that of other autistic individuals to discuss the social and policy gaps that exist in supporting those on the spectrum and to shed light on what it’s like to be autistic in America. In addition to his work in political reporting and writing, Eric is a huge fan of Ted Lasso and UNC basketball - which is how we connected with him on Twitter. So, we invited him on to chat about college basketball and Ted Lasso - particularly the parallels between Ted’s character and the real-life, iconic men’s college basketball coaches Dean Smith and Roy Williams. Welcome to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation about Ted Lasso with legendary former Major League Soccer and USMNT star Jimmy Conrad! Jimmy is a former professional soccer player, who played 26 games with the US Men’s National Team and 12 seasons in Major League Soccer, where he was named to the MLS Best XI on four occasions and won the MLS Cup with the Kansas City Wizards in 2004. Jimmy hung up his cleats in 2011, but has continued his career in sports media as a host and analyst since then. Currently, he co-hosts the CBS Sports podcast In Soccer We Trust alongside his pals (and former Men’s National Teamers) Charlie Davies and Heath Pearce. In addition to his hosting duties, Jimmy oversees a production company called Radical Creative Group as well as the ever-growing community of do-gooders known simply as the “Warmballers.” He also currently serves as the Sporting Director for the San Francisco Glens Soccer Club. Of course, Jimmy’s a massive fan of Ted Lasso, too. So we invited him on the show to talk about Ted, Jose Mourinho, Zlatan, MLS, the US National Team, warm balls, and lots, lots more. 31 Mar 2023 | Maximilian Osinski • Zava on Ted Lasso | 00:51:40
Welcome to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Marisa, Christian, and Brett have a conversation with the man behind the myth behind the Zava – Maximilian Osinski! We chatted with Max about how he came to be involved with Ted Lasso and asked him questions about Zava's persona, his wardrobe, and how Max was able to embody such a mysterious and enigmatic character. We also discussed the similarities between Zava and other iconic footballers like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ronaldo, and Eric Cantona. For you Marvel fans, we also got into a bit of Max's experience playing Agent Davis in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. And, as an added bonus, we heard the story of Max's Polish folk-dancing performance for Pope John Paul II when he was a teenager. Trust us, this is one y'all don't want to miss! 04 Apr 2023 | Tackling Homophobia in Football (with Lou Englefield) | 00:33:50
Welcome to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation with sports activist and Ted Lasso fan Lou Englefield! Currently, Lou serves as the Director of Pride Sports UK, the Campaign Director of Football v Homophobia, the Co-Chair of Pride House International, and a board member of the Fare Network. We connected with Lou on Twitter through her work with the organization Football vs Homophobia, which is an international initiative opposing homophobia in football (aka soccer). FvH tackles this issue at all levels of the game, all around the world, in creative ways that both support queer and trans folks while also educating and empowering others to be confident and effective allies. Of course, Lou’s a big fan of Ted Lasso, too. So we invited her on our show to chat about Ted and AFC Richmond squad, the work she does as a sports activist, and the representation of queer characters on Ted Lasso generally as well as the newly-cemented status of Colin as a queer character specifically. 11 Apr 2023 | In Memory of Grant Wahl (with Eric Wahl & Julie Stewart-Binks) | 00:51:02
Welcome to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett remember Grant Wahl's legacy in a conversation with his brother, Eric Wahl. The fourth episode of Ted Lasso's third season is dedicated to sports journalist Grant Wahl, who died suddenly and unexpectedly while covering the 2022 Men's World Cup in Qatar, and his tragic passing left the soccer community in the United States in a state of shock and sadness. In this conversation, Grant's brother Eric shares some personal anecdotes about their relationship, discusses Grant's legacy in the world of soccer journalism, explains what it means to him to have an episode of the show dedicated to his brother, and shares about the incredible outpouring of support he and Grant's wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, have received since Grant's untimely death. Grant was a massive fan of Ted Lasso, and it's safe to say that Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt were fans of his as well. After learning of Grant's passing, the creators of the show decided to dedicate an episode of the third season to his memory and legacy. At the end of the episode, we've also included some closing comments from sports journalist Julie Stewart-Binks, who was a longtime friend and former colleague of Grant's. We had a full conversation with Julie about Ted Lasso and her work, which we'll release in the coming weeks. But we wanted to include her comments about Grant in this episode. 13 Apr 2023 | Welcome to Schmicago! (with Cinco Paul) | 00:41:01
Welcome to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Marisa, Christian, and Brett have a conversation with Cinco Paul, the co-creator, executive producer, songwriter, and showrunner of Schmigadoon. In addition to Schmigadoon, Cinco Paul is also known for his work as a screenwriter for beloved films like Horton Hears a Who, The Lorax, The Secret Life of Pets, and the Despicable Me trilogy – all of which he worked on with his longtime friend and collaborator Ken Daurio. For the uninitiated, Schmigadoon is a musical comedy television series that centers on the relationship of two NYC doctors, Josh and Melissa – played by Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong, respectively. The show is a brilliant love letter to musical theater which also cleverly parodies many of the genre’s most recognizable features through hilarious and heartfelt performances from the A-list cast of musical theatre stars. We here at Richmond Til We Die are huge fans of Schmigadoon. Luckily, Cinco’s a big fan of Ted Lasso too, and so we were thrilled to have an opportunity to chat with the man who helped create another one of our favorite shows! Welcome to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation about Ted Lasso and the midwest's unique conversational style with author and comedy writer Taylor Kay Philips. Taylor currently writes for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO, and her work has also appeared in publications like the The New Yorker and McSweeney’s. (Note: as of this publication, the 2023 WGA labor union strike, which affects Taylor and her colleagues, is ongoing. We support the WGA in their ongoing negotiations with the AMPTP.) And though she currently lives and works in the New York City, Taylor originally hails from the Barbecue Capital of the World, Kansas City, and is a true midwesterner at heart! She loves the midwest so much, in fact, that she wrote a book called A Guide to Midwestern Conversation, which is a hilarious and heartfelt homage to the the midwest’s particular brand of communication. Of course, Taylor’s a massive fan of Ted Lasso, too. So we invited her on the show to chat about Ted’s midwestern mannerisms, the unique culture and charm of Kansas City, and what it was like to be in attendance at the 2022 Emmy Awards Ceremony as the Ted Lasso cast and crew collected multiple awards. Alex is the Managing Editor at USA Today’s For The Win - a social news hub that focuses on sports and entertainment. Of course, Alex is also a huge, huge fan of Ted Lasso, too. She’s written about Ted Lasso at For The Win, and had the opportunity to interview principal cast members for the site. Alex co-hosts Ted Lasso-centered episodes for the Big Screen Sports podcast. She also happens to be one of our favorite Twitter follows, and as such is the primary reason we have a working knowledge of news emanating from the University of Mississippi athletic department. The first episode of season three is a bit of a subdued number that sets the table for the show's brilliant and emotional third act. We chat about our expectations going into season three, where we find our favorite characters at the beginning of this season, and relish the fact that there is so much soccer stuff to nerd out about in this episode and this season. Additionally, we appreciate how much Hannah Waddingham is filmed eating, note the differences between U.S. and British referential humor, wax philosophical on some Goethe, and share our thoughts on the musical choices and placements in this episode. And, just as a general rule, you can expect our episodes this season to be a skosh longer than usual. What can we say? The TV show got longer. So did our podcast.
