04 Jun 2017Benni McCarthy: Gun Shots And Gangster League00:36:23
Here it is: your Benni bonus, as promised. And you can believe me when I say that this one is a very, very special treat. He takes us back to his childhood in Hanover Park, a suburb of Cape Town dominated by crime. That is where it all began for Benni… and where it could all have ended, with Benni recalling the rampant gang culture and violence he grew up around.Make no mistake, this was was a dangerous place to live - and he tells the story of how his best friend, 11-year-old Reginald, was shot and killed while they played football together in the street.Benni reveals that, at first, he thought a good education - and not football - was his best chance of escape, but his sporting talent soon took over and he became a star in a newly-created Gangster League, playing “shoe-shine piano” football. Don’t worry, you’ll discover what that means. From his origin story, he ends this spectacular Big Interview by looking to the future, offering a glimpse of what Benni McCarthy the football manager will be like....

10 Jan 2019Scott Minto: Hoddle, Gullit and House Music00:30:37

Hola Big Interview listeners! And happy New Year!

I can think of no better way to start 2019 than with another Big Interview. And this one is with the wonderful Mr Scott Minto.

Scott has carved out an excellent career in television but, before that, he was a successful, skilful footballer with the likes of West Ham, Benfica, and Chelsea.

You will learn about the big characters during his Stamford Bridge, with special mentions for Glenn Hoddle and Ruud Gullit, as well as the likes of Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Di Matteo.

And, of course, Scott retells the tale of the 1997 FA Cup final. That alone is worth listening to what I think is an utterly captivating chat.

This episode is available in full and ad-free at patreon.com/grahamhunter. Sign up now and you will unlock our full archive of Big Interviews with the likes of Pat Nevin, Brian McClair, Quinton Fortune and Joleon Lescott, while you will also be helping us to continue producing the content you love.

05 Dec 2016Steve McManaman: What Makes a Midfield (part two)00:37:51
SIGNING FOR Real Madrid would change everything for Steve McManaman. The move turned him into a league champion and Champions League winner, but it also transformed the way he played the game. In part two, McManaman talks about reinventing himself as a holding midfielder to better serve a team which included the likes of Luis Figo and Fernando Redondo - a player McManaman still considers a great, even though injury crippled the Argentine’s career. There is also an appreciation of the roles performed by Ronnie Whelan at Liverpool during the 80s, and Sergio Busquets in the current Barcelona side; fine support acts to some of the biggest stars in the game. Zinedine Zidane gets a mention, too, although not as you might expect. Listen to how this World Cup winner often looked lost during the early days of his Madrid career - before finding himself emphatically with a certain goal at Hampden - and why Claude Makelele was regarded as the most important player at the Bernabeu. When Makelele left it was the...

16 Aug 2017Slaven Bilic: Pancev, National Pride And The Road To Paris00:55:10
In part two of my interview with Slaven Bilic, we discuss the big figures from his past - from players he faced, like Dejan Savicevic and Darko Pancev, to his former Croatia colleague Alen Boksic.Slaven also takes us back to the 1998 World Cup, when he was part of the Croatia side which lost to Germany in the semi-finals, as well key moments from his time as manager of his national team. One of the most enjoyable moments of this interview is when Slaven teaches me something I didn't know about the Croatian team spirit. You'll find it interesting, too.And he talks about the development of Luka Modric from a teenager playing in his homeland into a brilliant footballer admired the world over.Enjoy!

27 Aug 2016Thomas Hitzlsperger: Playing Against Prejudice00:36:19
In part two of my interview with Thomas Hitzlsperger, the former Germany midfielder talks about his decision to take on some big issues outside football. This began in 2007, at the peak of his playing career, when he blogged about racism in football for a German site - the first story he wrote about concerned the racist abuse aimed at a Celtic player during a trial game Thomas played for the Scottish club before he joined Aston Villa. He also talks in length about his decision to come out as the most high-profile gay footballer. It's fascinating to hear him talk about how such a personal decision eventually influences a debate within wider football culture and impacts on individual lives in a way I don't believe he was expecting. Thanks for listening, und danke, Hammer.

21 Sep 2020Matt Jansen: Glory Beckoned, then Everything went Dark00:37:43

Last season, our Socios at patreon.com/grahamhunter got an exclusive interview with Matt Jansen. For the first time, here’s the full episode.

In part one, you’ll hear how Matt was a thoroughbred centre-forward with a cultured left foot – and no little courage. After spells at his hometown club of Carlisle United and then Crystal Palace, he signed for Blackburn. He scored the first goal and set up the winner in Rovers’ 2-1 League Cup final victory over Tottenham Hotspur in 2002. Everything was going brilliantly, until he was cruelly denied a place in Sven-Göran Eriksson’s England squad for the 2002 World Cup.

Instead of heading to Japan and Korea that summer, he went to Rome with his future wife. England could wait – he felt invincible, the happiest man in the world. And then disaster struck. Matt was so seriously injured in a scooter accident that the paramedics thought he had died. After six days in a coma, he began his rehabilitation and made a full physical recovery. But when he went back onto the pitch everything he had previously done automatically became laboured. The sound of the crowd sighing added to the agony.

Thanks for sharing, Matt.

25 Feb 2020Robert Snodgrass: A Streetwise Education00:48:29

Hold onto your hats, listeners... here comes Snoddy!

We recorded this on the 32nd floor of a skyscraper in Canary Wharf on February 14, 2020... and yes, love was in the air. I love the way Snoddy plays football for West Ham. And I love his infectious personality.

In this first part, he talks us through growing up in the Gallowgate, the support of a tight-knit family, how Leeds United made him a man and why Scotland should have stuck with Gordon Strachan.

Sit back, relax, enjoy some Snoddy time!

16 May 2019FA Cup Final Compilation: The Wizards of Wembley Way00:27:26

There’s something magical about the FA Cup final, don’t you think?

Wembley, the sun shining, a bowling green of a pitch… jumpers for goalposts. Sorry I’ve taken that too far.

Here’s some clips of our guests talking about that most special day in the football calendar

First up, then West Ham manager Alan Pardew tells us of the day in 2006 when Stevie G broke his heart with an injury-time equaliser from, what, 160 yards, to force extra-time and penalties.

Gary McAllister continues the Liverpool theme when he talks us through his part in the Anfield club’s 2-1 win over Arsenal in the 2001 FA Cup final.

Robbie di Matteo scored the fastest goal in FA Cup final history in 1997 and he talks us through that iconic moment, before Terry Gibson takes us back to 1988 and the day the Crazy Gang beat Liverpool to pick up the famous trophy.

Finally, listen up for Ander Herrera’s reflections on the 2016 FA Cup final, which marked his first major honour at United.

Enjoy!

04 Jul 2021Sancho, Thiago, Pedri plus a LIVE transfer. Your questions answered00:34:07
Here's what I think about Gareth Southgate's career-defining moments on and off the pitch, including his response to racists and his management of a talent-packed squad; which players might make big moves after the tournament; why we haven't seen much of Thiago so far. And a loan move happens as we are recording! Wolves fans, be excited.

12 Jan 2018Terry Gibson: How the Crazy Gang won the FA Cup00:57:48

Hello Big Interview listeners! Well, you’ve been very patient, so here it is: Part Two of my Big Interview with Terry Gibson.

And, I promise, it is well worth the wait. If you remember, at the end of Part One we left Terry after he had cut short an unfulfilling spell at Manchester United and signed for Wimbledon. We’ll pick up the story there, as Terry takes you inside that club and introduces you to the Crazy Gang.

The chances are you’ll have heard of them, but Terry takes us beyond the headlines and describes a group of rival factions who shared a dressing room. I found that fascinating but there was a happy ending, with Wimbledon going on to lift the 1988 FA Cup. Terry talks brilliantly about that cup run and the final against Liverpool.

I enjoy speaking to Terry and consider him a friend, but that’s not why I wanted him on the show. He also has a shrewd, brilliantly analytical football mind - just listen to how he takes clubs in England to task over their reliance on financial might instead of effective scouting.

Take it away, Terry.

29 Jun 2020World Cup 2010 Revista: The Ronaldo Rules00:51:58

It's matchday in South Africa 2010, so it's time to see what Spain were up to.

It's the round of 16 and it's Portugal: that means Ronaldo. He was the world's most expensive footballer and had just finished his first season in the white of Madrid.

Behind him, was one of the meanest defences in world football.

Spain had to innovate to stifle Ronaldo and break down the defensive barrier that stood between them and a quarter-final spot. Here's how they did it.

28 May 2019Copa del Rey: Barca on the couch00:36:42

Valencia end an 11-year trophy drought, but their 2-1 win over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final might be far more significant than that.

They have Spain's coach of the year, and a cleverly-assembled team that is ready to challenge for the title if the big three can't solve their problems this summer.

As for Barcelona? They have been in the psychiatrist's chair since Anfield and they can't get out until they make big changes to their team.

So what did we talk about? Well, you will hear Joleon describe the historic moment when City won the league title in 2012, as well as key players like Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.

21 Jun 2020World Cup 2010 Revista: Villa steadies the nerves00:53:32

As the Spanish press lose their minds in the wake of an opening defeat against Switzerland, Vicente Del Bosque sends his under-fire players on safari.

This is just one of the ways in which the European champions are treated as adults and now, in crisis mode, it pays off. They find a collective solution and move into Game Two, against Honduras, as one.

Elsewhere, England, France and Italy are not so resilient.

24 Jun 2021Spain 5 Slovakia 0 - a glimpse of what is possible00:25:00

Forgive the croak in my voice - this was recorded at the end of a very long day and night, before Spain left Seville ... destination - Copenhagen.

In their destruction of a disappointing Slovakia team, Spain gave us a reminder of what they can do when everything clicks and when the opposition's guard drops. They have a history of these blowout wins in recent years.

Does that make them contenders? I still have more than a few doubts about that. But for now, let's enjoy the good stuff.

03 Apr 2017Alex McLeish Live Part Three: The Q & A00:25:24
At the end of our live Big Interview with Alex McLeish, the former Scotland manager was gracious enough to stick around and answer questions from the audience, and we bring you that Q&A here as a special bonus feature.Alex tells the story of Alex Ferguson’s attempt to orchestrate a move to bring the defender from Aberdeen to Old Trafford, and how the Manchester United manager had a hand in discouraging bids from other English clubs.Ferguson was also aware of the importance of fitness and Alex explains how that manifest during his time at Aberdeen, as well as giving his own views on the importance of recruiting experts to help ensure players at the their physical peak. And he talks about his decision to step down as Scotland manager and what lies ahead in his career, while also telling one of the greatest anecdotes you’re likely to hear: when Socrates showed Gordon Strachan how a Brazilian takes a drugs test.Enjoy!

So let's get right into it. If you listened to my preview podcast then you will know that I told you how utterly exhausted these FC Barcelona players were, and boy did it show in Rome.

18 Feb 2020Classic Big Interview: Peter Crouch00:38:28

Here’s another chance to hear my interview with Peter Crouch from season two, when the striker was still playing football, at Stoke City.

There was a myth about Peter: that he had a good touch for a big bloke. In reality, he just had a fabulous touch, period. He gives us an amazing insight into the relentless practice – as well as the instinct – behind some of his most famous goals, including an extraordinary overhead kick which he netted for Liverpool against Galatasaray. Peter speaks about his sheer joy for the game, and how he was inspired by watching guys like Roy Wegerle who played in an exciting QPR team. He waxes lyrical about Gareth Bale – a player he always knew would make it at the highest level, and explains ‘The Stoke Effect’ – how top sides like Arsenal choke whenever they visit The bet365 Stadium.

Brilliant stuff

05 Oct 2016Ramon Calderon: The DNA of Real Madrid (part one)00:31:19
In his pristine legal office in downtown Madrid, Ramon Calderon comes off as a perfectly-mannered, spritely and talkative elder Real Madrid fan. Reason enough to mine the stories you are about to hear. But his status as not only a lifelong supporter, but also a board member and former president of that great club make him the perfect guide into the legend of Madrid. This is a guy that saw Alfredo Di Stefano play and later got to know him as a man. And for this, part one of the interview, we’re going to focus more or less on his time as a supporter in the 1960s and 70s. There is a glimpse of what’s to come in the way he breaks down the model Madrid use to turn superstar players into vast reservoirs of cash, but even that is rooted in the incredible vision of Santiago Bernabeu, the man behind Madrid. Enjoy!

27 Jun 2018Messi's Magical Moment00:35:21

Hola Big Interview listeners! I am starting to turn my attention to the knockout stages of the World Cup and I am delighted that little Leo Messi has made it too. Just.

That was a nerve-shredding night in St Petersburg but victory over Nigeria was enough to take Argentina through. Messi played his part in that game - of course he did - and in this episode I take a closer look at his influence on this Argentinian team.

I also discuss a player who shone for their group rivals Croatia: Mateo Kovacic. The Real Madrid midfielder has hinted already that he could move on from the Bernabeu this summer, but how keen are Madrid to see him go? I give my views here.

Dasvidanya!

15 Jan 2019Roberto Di Matteo Part I: How to win the Champions League, and other stories00:35:13

Hola Big Interview listeners!

You have been telling us about their favourite Big Interviews from our archive. Here’s another classic.

Twelve months ago I spent an entertaining couple of hours with Roberto Di Matteo . Robbie came ready to talk and he brought insight, analysis, great stories and plenty of laughs.

You’ll hear him reflect on the glory era of Serie A, where he was part of a swashbuckling Lazio side who scored goals for fun and should have won the trophies to back up their talent.

Robbie is brilliant on his time at Chelsea under Ruud Gullit. At Stamford Bridge, he added goals to his game and medals to his collection. There were famous goals – not least in the FA Cup final against Middelsbrough – and sexy football under the charismatic Gullit.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

03 Jul 2018Post Mortem: What next for Spain?00:42:01

Hola Big Interview listeners!

With the Spain players having boarded a flight back to Madrid after being knocked out of the World Cup by hosts Russia, I feel the time is right to dig in to the reasons for their exit and, also, what happens now.

With help from questions from some of you marvellous Socios, I give my opinions on the future of this Spain team and manager Fernando Hierro; potential replacements should he step down; and what to expect next season from embattled goalkeeper David de Gea.

There is so much to talk about so let's get right to it.

09 Oct 2019Joleon Lescott: Esteemed Kompany00:36:41

Last season, our Socios at patreon.com/grahamhunter got an exclusive interview with Joleon Lescott. For the first time, here’s the full episode.

In part two, Joleon speaks about rediscovering his other youthful passion, DJing, and how he now evokes joy on the dancefloor as he used to spark delight on the terraces. He also describes how undiagnosed dyslexia compelled him to develop mental agility and resourcefulness that he would apply to the beautiful game. There’s chat about his Manchester City defensive partner, the extraordinary Vincent Kompany, and about how it took until retirement for Joleon to fully realise just how massive an achievement winning the Premier League title was.

24 Nov 2020Alan McInally: Me and Graham Taylor00:47:47

Alan ‘Rambo’ McInally works so well on television because he brings the same passion and astuteness that he employed in his career as a clever, uncompromising striker. In this Big Interview, he describes in forensic detail a goal of the season he once scored for Aston Villa against Millwall.

We chat about Alan’s move from Celtic to Villa where he played under the late Graham Taylor. He had great midfield suppliers like Gordon ‘Sid’ Cowans and the late great Neale ‘Tattie’ Cooper. Graham was a father figure, unyielding but without whose coaching Alan wouldn’t have achieved his next move, to Bayern Munich.

Thanks for a brilliant Big Interview, Big Man.

06 May 2021Brian Laudrup: Denmark 1992 – Football’s Greatest Fairy Tale Part Two00:55:12

In part two of my uplifting interview with Brian Laudrup, we get into the detail of Denmark’s Euro ’92 fairy tale.

A disappointing draw with England was followed by defeat to hosts Sweden and the Danes prepared to pack their bags. But a star-studded France team underestimated Laudrup and Co, who clinched a semi-final place against the Netherlands. The Dutch were the competition’s most fancied side, featuring talents such as Rijkaard, Bergkamp and Van Basten. Yet Denmark won a penalty shoot-out to face Germany in the final in Gothenburg where Peter Schmeichel was a hero between the sticks and John Jensen scored an unlikely beauty. Perhaps Destiny also played her part for the Danes that summer.

The lesson, friends, is to never stop believing.

11 Jul 2018Bad Decisions Cost England: Croatia 2 England 100:29:48

Hola Big Interview listeners!

It is Croatia who have joined France in the World Cup final, beating England last night. It was a compelling match and one which gave me plenty to talk about when I recorded this match review only moments after the end of extra time.

England came a long way in Russia but, ultimately, they made some major errors last night which I think cost them a place in Sunday's final.

This is my take on what happened in Moscow.

Enjoy!

19 Apr 2018Troy Deeney: Duels with van Dijk00:21:08

Hello Big Interview listeners!

Here is a little piece of my chat with Watford captain Troy Deeney, in which he describes what it's like to play against formidable Premier League defenders John Stones, John Terry and Virgil van Dijk. He also explains why he believes that the Liverpool man is the best of the lot.

And Troy offers a few tips on how to play centre forward, as well as revealing the lessons he learned from Gianfranco Zola and the seven steps he took - literally - to become one of the best finishers in England.

But this is only a taste of my Big Interview with Troy. For the full, hour-long episode go to patreon.com/grahamhunter and subscribe to become a Socio.

Not only will you gain instant access to my chat with the Watford captain but you will also unlock an archive of over 50 Big interviews and special episodes, as well as helping to ensure that we can continue to bring you the content that you love.

29 Mar 2017Alex McLeish Live Part One: Barca, Bayern and Barnum & Bailey00:41:56
It was a great privilege to have Alex McLeish, a real hero of mine, as the guest for the second ever live Big Interview, which we recorded at the Aye Write book festival in Glasgow. It was also my good fortune for the event to fall the day after Barcelona pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in football history - wiping out a 4-0 first-leg defeat by winning 6-1 at the Camp Nou in a truly incredible Champions League match.I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to ask Alex to give his take on that game for the first part of this podcast and uncover what it is that allows the best players to win, and keep winning.Alex then took us back to his formative years as a footballer; the constructive criticism from his father, playing games constantly at a local field and, later, training with his Aberdeen team-mates in the car park opposite Pittodrie. The Dons, of course, feature heavily in this interview and Alex talks about the success he enjoyed at the club, including how they got the better of Bayern...

26 Mar 2019Gaizka Mendieta: Valencia Thrillers and Dancefloor Fillers00:41:28

Hola!

Here's a classic from The Big Interview archives. Back in 2015, I sat down with Gaizka Mendieta, a man whose devotion to artistry on the field of play is matched by his obsession with music.

Gaizka describes his conversion to a total footballer at Valencia, his second life as a DJ, and scoring what should be considered one of the best – if not the best – goals of all time. Oh, and he also mentions meeting Lou Reed, the Johan Cruyff of music.

Gaizka, you are a class act.

29 Dec 2020Charlie Adam: The Will to Win00:37:50

Hola!

Last season, our Socios at patreon.com/grahamhunter got an exclusive interview with Charlie Adam. For the first time, here’s the full episode.

Charlie was brought up on a Dundee housing estate where he honed his skills by kicking a ball relentlessly at bin recesses and between washing poles. Charlie speaks about the early influence of his beloved late father, who taught him a work ethic and a relentless will to win. It all paid off because Rangers came calling.

As an Ibrox youth he champed at the bit, trying outrageous stuff on the training field or sneaking in to watch the first team prepare. He was always watching, learning, visualising, plotting. To this day he is able to vividly describe his artistry in detail, how he precisely strikes the ball. For example, he relates how on earth he managed to score a goal for Stoke City at Chelsea from inside his own half.

Part two coming soon.

01 Oct 2018Robbie Keane: Me, Modric & the Hunger Games00:47:31

Hola Big Interview listeners!

In the first part of my Big Interview with Robbie Keane the former Spurs striker delivers fierce criticism of the way that bigger wages have diminished the desire of young, talented footballers to make it make it in the game.

It is a subject which continues to rile Robbie and he compares the attitudes of some promising young players today with dedicated winners like Roy Keane and Luka Modric. Both of those men would feature in Robbie's dream five-a-side team.

And the Irishman also recounts his remarkable spell playing alongside David Beckham in LA.

15 Jul 2020Dietmar Hamann: The Return of Il Trap00:33:21

There were mixed European fortunes for Dietmar Hamann at Bayern Munich: a famous triumph in Barcelona followed by a UEFA Cup final win over Bordeaux, but also a tough lesson from an Ajax side which Dietmar describes as one of the best ever.

After head coach Otto Rehhagel was undermined by certain players, Giovanni Trapattoni was soon back and Dietmar won his second German title. Trapp also issued the most famous outburst in German football history. Newcastle then came calling, and life in England sparked a love affair with that other beautiful game: cricket. There was an FA Cup Final defeat to the mighty Manchester United but Dietmar’s Tyneside days set him up for a move to Liverpool, where greatness beckoned.

As we prepare for the World Cup final between France and Croatia, I take you back to two previous occasions when Les Bleus competed in the final of the tournament: as hosts in 1998 and in Germany eight years later.

25 Jun 2020World Cup 2010 Revista: Bielsa's Uneasy Truce00:53:43

It's win or bust in the final group game. Spain must Defeat Chile or go home.

This was packed full of incident: a whirlwind start by Chile; two beautiful goals from Iniesta and Villa; a red card that should never have been; and the most bitter memory of the World Cup for my taste, as Chile offered Spain a murky deal, which they eventually accepted.

Before that, nerves were shredded and I had to use all my wiles to get Spain's talismanic superfan past stadium security.

14 Aug 2018European Super Cup Preview: Godin, Griezmann & a Good Summer for Simeone00:35:33

Hola Big Interview listeners!

All eyes will be on Tallinn on Wednesday evening, where city rivals Atleti and Real Madrid will compete for the European Super Cup.

In this special preview episode I take a close look at the two clubs and determine who will be happier with their summer transfer business. For Atleti, the fact that Jan Oblak, Antoine Griezmann and Diego Godin are all still in red and white can be regarded as significant successes, while Madrid have brought in a new manager and lost a talisman: Cristiano Ronaldo.

This is an incredibly intriguing contest. And it all starts here with the Big Inside View.

28 Apr 2021John McGinn: The Fire Inside00:34:31

It was a real pleasure catching up with Scotland and Aston Villa midfield maestro John McGinn.

John is a graduate of the academy at St Mirren where he was taught technique by progressive coaches – and also learned how to dodge fireworks! Let’s just say that training took place in Ferguslie Park, the more… boisterous end of Paisley. Hibernian came calling and John describes the Scottish Cup triumph of 2016 over Rangers, replete with a pitch invasion and a stirring rendition of the anthemic Sunshine on Leith.

10 May 2017Walter Smith: All Roads Lead To Rome00:42:13
Furious Italians. Corrupt officials. The legendary Jim McLean. A sea plane. All of these feature in Part One of this Big Interview with Walter Smith, which we recorded on the stunning grounds of Cameron House on the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond. It was going to take something special to outdo that scenery. But Walter managed just that, recalling his time spent working under McLean at Dundee United and how the iconic manager inspired loyalty in his players - as well as fear.Their United side reached the semi-finals of the European Cup but that campaign ended in Rome, on a night made infamous by a crooked referee and the threats Roma’s players made to McLean. Walter explains how he helped the United manager escape unscathed. And Walter also talks about winning the European Youth Championship with Scotland in 1982, during an era when it seemed as though the country would always produce exciting, natural footballers, and how only Andy Roxburgh could see that talent pool was going to dry up.Enjoy!

01 May 2018Champions: Messi, Valverde and Barca's Road to the Title00:44:27

Hello there!

Mission accomplished: on Sunday, FC Barcelona achieved what they set out to do and won the league and cup double, clinching the La Liga trophy with a 4-2 victory over Deportivo.

The sight of Real Madrid winning the title had stung and these Barca players used that to spur them on this season. They may yet complete the league season unbeaten, and what a remarkable achievement that would be.

In this special podcast, I will give you my opinion on what this title win means; where it ranks in comparison to previous FC Barcelona league triumphs; as well as the players and matches that have been key to delivering the trophy to the Camp Nou this season.

You will hear my views on Neymar, Andres Iniesta and the successful, crucial working relationship which manager Ernesto Valverde has developed with Lionel Messi.

11 Aug 2016Gianluca Vialli: Turin to Chelsea01:01:05
I first met Luca Vialli in 1995 when my sports editor at the Scottish Daily Mail sent me to find out the secrets of how Juventus destroyed Rangers in the European Cup that season. The Turin side won 4-0 at Ibrox and important lessons were there to be learned. We talk about that first meeting between us in this, part two, of the podcast. I found a man who, like the club he represented, burned with intensity. He reflects on the culture of fitness and desire which drove Juventus to Champions League success in 1996, and what it means to represent the club.Ironically, Luca had the chance to join Rangers when he left Juve in 1996, but instead ended up at Chelsea. He talks passionately about his time with the London club, both as a player and manager – and how former teammate Conte is the man to restore the club’s reputation on the world stage. Listen out for anecdotes on Ranieri, Di Canio, Lippi and Ferguson.Enjoy!Graham

As a teenager at Wolves, Joleon once pushed himself so hard that he was physically sick but then continued training. It was an attitude that didn’t go unnoticed and one that he applies in his new role developing loan players at Manchester City, the club at which he excelled.

In part one, Joleon also describes the desire to win that City’s owners possess – don’t expect them to relent until they win the Champions League.

You'll also hear about his arrival at West Ham, his relationship with Harry Redknapp and Jermain's admiration for another notable English striker, Ian Wright. And what about Bournemouth and Eddie Howe? Yes, Jermain talks about them too.

Okay, so you are about to listen to a La Liga event which I recorded live with Sid Lowe at the Sugar Club in Dublin earlier this year.Together, we share our appreciation of rondos and the role they play in the technical development of footballers in Spain, something which teams in England continue to be ignorant of.We also chat about Luis Enrique and, in particular, his relationship with the Spanish media during his time as manager of FC Barcelona, and I give my opinion on the direction that Barca are going in.Sid and I also discuss another character who has since left the Spanish game, Monchi, and explain why he was so incredibly important to the success of Sevilla during his long reign as sporting director. This event was a lot of fun, and I want to say a big thank you to Con Artist promotions for staging the gig. Last season, our Socios at patreon.com/grahamhunter got an exclusive interview with David Preece. For the first time, here’s the full episode.

David is one of the most accomplished ex-professionals at writing about football - he is dragging analysis of goalkeeping beyond the lazy clichés. And it helps, too, that he played for my beloved Aberdeen.

In part one, David speaks about being on the end of a whirlwind thrashing by a Celtic side which featured the legendary Henrik Larsson, how he broke every finger during his career and how losing a match threw him into a pit of gloom.

11 Jul 2020World Cup 2010 Revista: When Iker met Arjen01:18:02

Welcome to the World Cup final of 2010.

As our mini-series concludes, let's go back to the build-up to Spain v Holland: both Franz Beckenbauer and Paul the Octopus predicted a Spain win, but nobody foresaw the nature of their victory.

There has never been a dirtier World Cup final - there could easily have been more than the one red card we saw. And Holland could easily have left with the trophy and the glory, were it not for an eternal moment - perhaps the most memorable from my journalistic career - between Arjen Robben and Iker Casillas.

And that's before we even get to Iniesta. Or, for that matter, Gerard Pique, who almost got me into serious trouble in the immediate aftermath of this unforgettable game.

I hope you have enjoyed this series. If you'd like to find out about the book I wrote on Spain's three successive trophy wins from 2008 to 2012, in hardback, paperback and audiobook (read by me), then you can do that here:

03 Dec 2020Stuart Baxter: Working with Laudrup and Larsson00:43:11

As part of the post-Kobe earthquake rebuilding job Stuart Baxter was allowed to sign Danish superstar Michael Laudrup. They gained promotion but the experience drained him of every ounce of energy.

Stuart speaks of his love of South African football, especially at Kaizer Chiefs where he won the double in his first season. Fate seems to have stood in the way of him making it big in Blighty. Circumstances denied him key roles at Manchester United and Celtic, but he had the honour of working with Hoops legend Henrik ‘Henke’ Larsson when they were both at Helsingborgs. He brokered Henke’s loan deal to Manchester United where Sir Alex Ferguson adored him.

This is a fascinating Big Interview. Just fascinating.

14 May 2018Ander Herrera: Final Level01:05:23

Ander Herrera describes the 2004 Copa del Rey final as "one of the greatest nights of my life". That reaction to being in Barcelona to watch his team, Real Zaragoza, beat the Galacticos of Real Madrid tells you a lot about this brilliant midfielder: he's a football fan who understands other football fans. This interview - one of my favourites in this series - is going to leave youin no doubt about how that love of the game influences the player he is and the choices he makes.

21 Oct 2019Classic Big Interview: Steve McManaman00:41:34

Here’s another chance to hear my interview with Steve McManaman from season two.

Johan Cruyff once described Steve as the partner to everyone on the pitch. He epitomised elegance, passing ability and vision, and graced the field with Real Madrid legends such as Roberto Carlos, Zinedine Zidane, Raul and the Brazilian Ronaldo. There was also Claude Makelele, the unsung hero who Steve reckons was the cog that made Los Galacticos tick and whose departure spelled their decline.

We hear about how before that, this boyhood Evertonian learned at the feet of Liverpool greats. About how his decision to depart Merseyside for Real – a club apparently in turmoil – was vindicated when he won the Champions League in his first season there. About how conflict with the Madrid hierarchy spoiled a golden era. And if you want to know what it was like in the Camp Nou away dressing room after scoring in a Los Merengues victory in the semi-final of the Champions League, then listen in.

13 Feb 2020Shay Given: My favourite goalkeepers00:28:58

Last season, our Socios at patreon.com/grahamhunter got an exclusive interview with Shay Given. For the first time, here’s the full episode.

In part two, Shay speaks about the loneliness of life between the sticks, who the world's best No1s are and why, and why we now live in such a golden era of goalkeeping. Former Newcastle stalwart Shay also describes his best-ever save, denying Kevin Phillips with his fingertips in a Tyne-Wear derby, and the ecstasy of narrowly clinching a World Cup place in front of 100,000 passionate Iranians.

If you would prefer not to wait 12 months to listen to these extra interviews, it’s time to become a Socio at patreon.com/grahamhunter

19 Nov 2020Alex Bruce: My Father And Other Football Heroes00:39:07

Last season, our Socios at patreon.com/grahamhunter got an exclusive interview with Alex Bruce. For the first time, here’s the full episode.

In part two we hear about Alex’s admiration for Manchester United heroes Ronaldo, Giggs and Keane, but especially Rooney, a pal now but once an enemy who would target him for being Steve Bruce’s son. Alex thinks Wayne is underrated, one of England’s greatest players. We also hear how as a kid Alex would take shots at a young Kasper Schmeichel in their street and how one day they would grace the same Leeds United team.

There’s talk about why Alex switched his international allegiances from the Republic to Northern Ireland – for once ignoring his father’s advice. Alex tells how the Championship is physically harder than Premier League, and how gaining promotion with Hull was an especially sweet experience because his beloved dad was the manager.

07 Dec 2017Mourinho vs Guardiola: The Clasico Wars00:47:27
Ahead of the Manchester derby, I spoke to Paolo Condo, author of THE DUELLISTS, a new book about the four Clasicos in 18 crazy days in 2011 that took Barcelona, Real Madrid and Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho to the edge. We were both on that unforgettable rollercoaster six years ago. This is us, talking about it.

24 Mar 2020Paul Robinson: A Leeds Education00:40:52

Paul Robinson experienced incredible highs and crushing lows during his goalkeeping career.

The Yorkshireman was a Leeds United academy product and he was there during their glory, glory days under chairman Peter Ridsdale. What players they had – think of names like Smith, Woodgate, Kewell, Maybury, Kelly, Bowyer, Harte and Radebe.

Paul came under the wing of brilliant, tough-but-fair youth coach Paul Hart and was toughened up by John Burridge at Durham City – in my opinion the most wonderfully nutty No1 in British football history. Paul explains how ‘Budgie’ had a truly extraordinary enthusiasm for the beautiful game and a massive heart. An injury crisis handed Paul his first-team debut against Chelsea. He was only eighteen, but he loved every minute of it. Eventually, he would star against top Champions League teams, including a Barcelona side which featured the magical Rivaldo.

You will love this Big Interview with this engaging, thoughtful, articulate man.

23 Jul 2020Guest #100 Rio Ferdinand: Sir Alex and my Champions League Quest (Pt 2)00:45:56

In 2008, Rio Ferdinand’s Champions League dream came true on a rainy night in Moscow.

The final against Chelsea was a game Rio was terrified to lose. He had to take a penalty in the shootout, an experience he says you simply cannot prepare yourself for. But his mum just loved it when he walked up to lift the big trophy.

Rio once raged at Sir Alex Ferguson from the pitch. The manager was so angered that he would have sold him had he not apologised. Fergie was a genius, a man with an incredible personal touch. Pep Guardiola was the only guy who could have filled his shoes. United had beaten Barcelona in the ’08 semi, but Pep's team were a different beast in the 2009 and 2011 finals. Rio felt embarrassed after those games and said that Barca ripped the soul from that United team. Although they were up against the greatest side of all time, Rio knows they could and should have done better. Fergie should have set them up differently, more compactly, more counter-attacking.

Thanks Rio.

12 Apr 2021Classic Big Interview: Ander Herrera00:39:47

Here’s another chance to hear my interview with Ander Herrera from season three.

Classy midfielder Ander is now at Paris Saint-Germain where he was recently a Champions League finalist. I caught up with him when he was still a Manchester United player and he waxed lyrical about his earlier footballing life helping his beloved Real Zaragoza survive in Spain’s top flight. He liked his time at Athletic Bilbao under the footballing romantic Marcelo Bielsa, but he describes losing two cup finals due to the team’s sheer exhaustion. There’s also great stuff about why Ander wouldn’t become a manager, and he makes his case for David de Gea being the best goalkeeper in the world.

29 Jan 2020Micah Richards: Mancini, Mario and Me00:38:24

Having witnessed Micah Richards’ incisive football analysis on television, I just knew I had to grab him for a Big Interview. I was not to be disappointed.

As a talented, hardworking defender, he didn’t have his troubles to seek – injuries interrupted and shortened his career. But Micah will always be remembered as a winner, having lifted the FA Cup and the Premier League trophy with Manchester City.

He was such good pals with Mario Balotelli at City that they both sported the same eccentric haircut, and while Micah is frank about his friend’s flaws, he also speaks about the often-unfair treatment he, and footballers in general, receive. He is similarly open about his transformative relationship with his Sky Blues boss Roberto Mancini, a man who players either loved or hated.

Micah’s descriptions of the remarkable 2011-12 league winning campaign which went down to the last seconds of the last day, are captivating, and the reason we do these Big Interviews.

21 Oct 2020Eni Aluko: For the Good of the Women’s Game00:31:23

Last season, our Socios at patreon.com/grahamhunter got an exclusive interview with Eni Aluko. For the first time, here’s the full episode.

In part two we’ve got more about the progress of the women’s game and how outspoken stars like Eni and Norway’s Ada Hegerberg took stances against mediocrity, poor coaching and bad treatment of players. Eni had a particularly painful experience with the culture at England. She forgives her antagonists now but she was mystified that she wasn’t selected for France ’19.

There’s great stuff about the ruthless attitude that made the US dominate the women’s game, and about Eni’s long-term interest in developing talent and growing a winning culture at a club. Since our interview she has hung up her boots and become sporting director of Aston Villa Women. I’m sure she will be a great success.

13 Nov 2017Martin Compston: Prince, Paolo and Gary Tank Commander00:40:27

In Part Two of The Big Interview with actor Martin Compston, he takes us on to the set of the wonderful football film The Damned United, which tells the story of Brian Clough’s ill-fated spell in charge of Leeds.

Martin, who plays striker John O’Hare in the film, is often fiercely critical of movies about football, but he explains why he thinks The Damned United gets it so right. He also talks about what it was like to work with director Ken Loach on another great film with football as its backdrop: Tickets.

From Loach to Michael Sheen to Miss Marple, Martin tells great stories about some famous names. And how about another - Prince. Yes, he features in this podcast too.

What’s more, that unbelievable encounter took place on the eve of the Soccer Aid match, but Martin reveals that he was still able to play so well that his performance at full-back earned him special praise from The Special One.

03 Nov 2020Conor Coady: Wolves’ Rough Guide to Europe00:37:45

Chatting to a guy like Conor Coady reminds me why I do these Big Interviews. The Wolves’ centre-back’s enthusiasm for football is infectious and engaging.

Brought up a Liverpool fan, he lived the dream for a while playing under youth coaches like Steve Highway, Steve Cooper and Rodolfo Borrell, men who made him a better person as well as a better, problem-solving player. Conor loved playing top clubs in the NextGen European tournament for under-19 footballers. A visit to Dortmund and a painful 6-0 lesson from Ajax stick in the mind. Being released from Anfield broke Conor’s heart, but his dad encouraged him to take his time and wait for his body to fill out, and he has flourished at Wolves.

We chat about Wolves’ recent Europa adventures. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo is a hard taskmaster who hates losing. Even after the delicious victory at Beşiktaş he said he wanted more.

Thanks Conor

04 May 2018El Clasico: Pride, Politics (But No Pasillo)00:37:25

Hola Big Interview listeners!

FC Barcelona have won the title already, but there will be no lack of drama when they face arch rivals Real Madrid on Sunday night. Not by a long shot.

There will be scrutiny on both teams from the get-go, with Madrid refusing flatly to offer their triumphant visitors a Pasillo, a guard of honour. This has been a debate which has been running for a while and it will be point of contention even after the game, no matter the result.

I give you my views on the subject in this special episode of the Big Inside View, while I will also discuss the political friction which hangs over the match and the potential for Barca to continue their invincibility in the league this season.

Enjoy!

23 Sep 2018Alan Smith: Wright, Wrongs & a European Cup00:38:10

Hola Big Interview listeners!

In part two of my chat with Alan Smith, the Arsenal legend takes us to Copenhagen and Arsenal's famous victory over Parma in the final of the 1994 European Cup Winners' Cup. Alan will recall the famous names among that glittering Italian side - Zola, Asprilla and Brolin to name three - and, of course, his own wonderful, decisive goal.

That should have been the crowning moment of his career. But, as Alan will explain, he had by then lost his confidence and was no longer enjoying his football. We talk about why that was. It's an important message.

And we also discuss the arrival at Highbury of Ian Wright and why Alan was unable to click with his new team-mate on the pitch, as well as Alan's prominent role in the FIFA computer games.

In the meantime, here is an extract which I think is important for us all to listen to. You'll hear Les talk about how he was inspired by black footballers like Cyrille Regis, who stood up to vile racism, while Les also outlines the measures he would take to rid our game of this evil once and for all.

He has some stern words for the FA too, and explains why he thinks they are unable to tackle racism effectively.

Hola!

You’re right on time for another special Big Interview clip show. You might recall that we dedicated a previous podcast to guests who had played abroad, and a couple more who have always wanted to.

Well, in Season Two this theme came up a lot, so this episode is all about guests who took the brave decision to move abroad as coaches.

This includes Phil Neville, who joined the staff at Valencia. He explains the lengths he would go to in order to learn Spanish, as well as the contrasts between working in Spain compared to England, while John Collins talks about his time in charge of Charleroi and the reason he had to leave.

Alex McLeish also spent time in Belgium with Genk and he talks about his experiences there, as well as explaining why he turned down an offer to take charge of the Gabon national team.

12 Feb 2021Lionel Messi: Big Interview Icon00:24:17

Welcome to our Big Interview Icons series where we shine a light on a legend whose name has lit up some of the conversations I’ve had with my guests over the last six years of The Big Interview. This episode focuses on Lionel Messi.

Pablo Zabaleta recalls a quiet, skinny Messi in the Argentina Under-20s dressing room… then he did his talking on the pitch. At first, moving to Europe was a struggle for the lad, but he soon became a joy to behold for everyone who loves the beautiful game.

Gary Neville says that seeing Messi playing in the Camp Nou against Manchester City was the only time he has been genuinely mesmerised by a player. He pitches his every description of a footballer with Messi as the benchmark.

Countryman Federico Fernández speaks of a humble, family guy. Fede loves the experience of being around Messi, on and off the pitch.

Ander Herrera recalls playing for Real Zaragoza against Barcelona when Messi decided to take the game by the scruff of the neck and singlehandedly set up victory.

Lastly there’s a quick contribution from Graeme Souness, who considers Messi the greatest of all time. He would easily have held his own in Souey’s more robust playing era.

I also tackle a question from one our wonderful Socios and discuss the relationship between Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos - two men who are regarded as polar opposites off the pitch, but who unite to make up the heart of this Spanish defence.

17 Dec 2019Steve Perryman: Bill Nicholson and Bobby Charlton00:54:44

Steve Perryman’s autobiography A Spur Forever! is a thing of genuine beauty – as, quite frankly, is this Big Interview.

This classy, dynamic footballer starred in scintillating Tottenham Hotspur teams alongside greats such as Alan Gilzean, Martin Chivers, Jimmy Greaves, Alan Mullery and Ossie Ardiles.

Steve played almost his entire career at Spurs, initially under legendary manager Bill Nicholson, a man carved from Yorkshire granite. In part one he tells us how the double-winning coach looked to a teenager starting out his pro career.

Bill gave Steve his debut against the mighty Manchester United and the second part of this episode is a chat about Bobby Charlton, a hero of Steve's, who he played against and would come across again in later life.

22 Apr 2020Jimmy Bullard: Secrets of Soccer AM00:46:47

Jimmy Bullard’s on-field and latterly on-screen personality is that of an easy-going joker, but that is only a conscious extension of his true self. He is also a brilliant soccer analyst, and as a talented midfielder he was frustrated by English football’s failure to adopt the Continental passing game. Roy Hodgson was the only manager who understood him. He’s glad to see things changing, thanks mainly to the influence of Pep.

When he joined West Ham the club was full of crazy personalities, not least Paulo Di Canio and John Moncur. Paulo had such charisma that he changed the culture of the entire club.

Oh – and there’s brilliant stuff about Soccer AM, and Jimmy gives us an incredible behind-the-scenes insight into creating magical television.

Enjoy

Boy, this has been a busy week. That has had something to do with the upcoming Clasico - a match in which (I think) Julen Lopetegui will still be in the dug out for Madrid ... but for how much longer?

I discuss Lopetegui's position at the Bernabeu in this special Clasico preview episode, and examine the embattled Madrid side which he will take to the Camp Nou this weekend.

But, before I took off, I discussed the fallout from the group stage, focusing on fallen holders Germany. They are not the first team to lift the trophy only to fall at the first hurdle four years later ... in fact it has become a bit of a World Cup tradition.

19 Jan 2021Andrea Orlandi: Ronaldinho and Rondos at Barca00:47:21

Last season, our Socios at patreon.com/grahamhunter got an exclusive interview with Andrea Orlandi. For the first time, here’s the full episode.

In part one you’ll hear about how this elegant winger perfected his talents at Barcelona B by observing and training with the likes of Ronaldinho, Iniesta and Busquets. The young Busquets was nicknamed ‘Crouch’ because he was tall and skinny; he had to work so hard. Iniesta was quicker than people realise, with incredible acceleration; he never gave the ball away. And Ronaldinho could have been the greatest of all time; physically so strong but with superhuman instincts and skills.

At Barca B Andrea was comfortable with the rondos training drills. You had to be – it wasn’t for fun, it encompassed the way Barcelona play. To this day he can describe precisely how he kicks a football, an ability which explains why he is such an engaging analyst of the game.
