On this week's episode Gene Jackson welcomes back Buster "Hellraiser" Johnson to review the July 5th 1997 episode of USWA Championship Wrestling. Buster has some insight on the USWA in this period as he was working there and on this particular episode he was in a match against DOOMSDAY aka Glen Jacobs aka WWE Hall of Famer Kane. July of 1997 was an interesting time in the USWA and this is a very fun episode. We're in the middle of the USWA vs. ECW War as we're building towards an upcoming event 'The Brawl to End it All" where Tommy Dreamer & The Sandman will be coming to Memphis to face Jerry Lawler & Brian Christopher. Plus: King Mabel is on the show, Billy Joe Travis the week after he was arrested and taken to jail on live Memphis television, PJ Walker (aka the future Justin Credible) is here doing an odd character than can only be described as a "White Konnan" gimmick, and much, much more!

They dissect his feud with "Exotic" Adrian Street and Miss Linda and the important role it played in establishing him as he just arrived in the territory. They talk about the importance of his memorable ring music and who gave it to him. They talk about his brief feud with Chris Colt and why it didn't take off the way they hoped it would. Wendall discusses why he enjoyed gimmicks like "pole matches" and how It broke up the monotony of working regular matches night in and night out. They also talk about working bullwhip matches with "Dirty" Dutch Mantell, working Sid Eudy in some of Sid's very early matches in his career, meeting Frankie Lancaster early on and how they came to be "the Heartbreakers" years later in Puerto Rico. On this episode, Gene welcomes the Owner, Founder, and President of Power Pro Wrestling as well as the Director of the Memphis Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame, Randy Hales! They discuss a number of things including the fact that Randy's first ever podcast appearance was on Gene's old Cheap Heat Radio show back in 2009 and how Randy used it to work an angle with Brandon Baxter to set up his return to the wrestling business after being out it for several years.

They also discuss how things came together for Randy to work with former "rival promoter" Terry Golden on the big event coming to Jackson, Tennessee on Saturday September 21st. They talk about the two main factors they feel made the Memphis territory special that created the connection with fans that still lives on to this day. On the debut episode of the Retro Rasslin Podcast, Gene Jackson is joined by Lolly Griffin aka Lolly Dude aka Francis "Crybaby" Buxton. Lolly has worn every hat there is to wear in professional wrestling from wrestler to promoter to referee to announcer, you name it and Lolly has done it in wrestling alongside some of the most legendary figures in the history of the business. Lolly has a history in radio which led to him being able to get involved in the wrestling business and has provided him a great career on the side of wrestling as well. From breaking into the business with help from friends such as The Fantastics, Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers as well as Terry Taylor, to hanging out with and learning from King Curtis Iaukea while living in Hawaii, to getting bloodied while refereeing matches between Abdullah the Butcher and the Sheik, to a most interesting encounter with his all time favorite wrestler Mr. Wrestling 2, Lolly has a ton of fun and amazing stories and we get to hear a lot of them here and we looking forward to speaking with him and hearing more in the future! I do apologize for the sound issues throughout the interview, there was an issue with the internet connection apparently that wasn't as bad live as it was in the recording but it doesn't take away from the overall conversation so please power through the couple of breaks in the sound that happen in the interview.

A great interview with one of my favorite old school wrestlers who still has a lot of love for the business and it really shows in this conversation. On this episode, Gene welcomes the man who brought "Kick Ass Wrestling" to Memphis, Terry Golden!  A fun conversation with the man who created and promoted KAW which eventually became the WWE Developmental promotion, Memphis Championship Wrestling.  It's a fun story hearing how KAW came to be and Terry even shares a story about it that he hasn’t been shared in previous interviews based on some new information he just recently learned. KAW was a great promotion that doesn't get enough attention and I was thrilled to get to talk to Terry about it here. We hear about making the transition to MCW, the challenges that came with their very first show and whether or not KAW could have lived on had he not taken the Developmental Deal from WWE. 

We also hear stories about Sid, Bryan Danielson, the infamous Tasha Simone & Kevin Lawler segment from KAW TV, The Night to Remember event coming to Jackson, TN on September 21st, and much, much more!

Gene and Rosey are back to discuss their unprecedented 60 days of Halloween they've observed this year which so far has included viewing 75 horror movies (as of today 10/23/20).  They intend to hit 80 by Halloween night.
