“The system is so broken” is a common phrase when we talk about foster care - and it is. But does that mean that we don’t engage? Is it even possible to bring hope to dark places like this, or is it too far gone? While there’s no doubt that the child welfare system is overwhelmed and struggling nationwide, we truly believe that hope is not lost. We believe that as we follow Christ’s example of stepping toward the broken and being in close proximity to the lost, our proper response is to engage, to serve, and to move close. Join us today as we share the heart behind our podcast and dive deeper into the mission of Hope Bridge. Welcome to ReStoried! Episode Highlights:

13 Nov 2023 | 2. Lisa’s Story: Beauty from Ashes | 00:25:03
“I’ve always dreamed of doing foster care.” When people share their journeys of becoming foster families, this might be a common phrase you hear. The reality is that this isn’t the case for everyone who becomes a foster parent. For our Executive Director, Lisa Robertson, foster care was never on her radar. Lisa married her husband, they had their first baby, and everything seemed to be going as planned when tragedy struck. Join us today as Lisa shares her story of how she and her husband navigated the unexpected, how God began pointing them to the world of foster care, and what he has done in their lives over the last decade. Often, our deepest pain can become our greatest testimony. We hope this story helps you reflect and find encouragement as you think about what led you on your own journey to foster care. Whether it’s infertility, an unexpected need of a relative, a tragedy, or something on your heart all along, God can use anything. He can make beauty from ashes. Welcome back to ReStoried.

13 Nov 2023 | 3. Nicole’s Story: A Call Worthy of the Cost | 00:35:54
“I could never do foster care because I could never let them go and say goodbye.” The above statement is a common and genuine sentiment many share when discussing foster care. Foster care is a journey that can come with unexpected twists and turns, sacrifice, and yes, sometimes even goodbyes and heartache. Join us today as our Foster Care Program Director, Nicole Bowman, shares her journey to foster care and what led her to where she is today. Nicole speaks candidly about her family’s hardships through their foster care walk, and there’s no doubt this road has come with a cost. But when we lay our fears down and walk in obedience anyway, ignoring God's call on our lives becomes nearly impossible–even when we know that call will be difficult. He gives us the tools to persevere through the deepest of waters. Nicole’s story will inspire you and give you hope as you hear her hindsight perspective of how God has been weaving this story together all along. Is everyone called to be a foster family? Join us today as we chat with our Director of Church Engagement, Brian Troyer. Brian candidly shares what led his family to foster care, as well as his experience along the way. 17 Nov 2023 | 6. Sowing and Reaping: The Legacy of The Christ Foundation | 00:35:56
Did you know that what you do today will leave a legacy for generations to come? Today, we are honored to share the mics with The Christ Foundation Executive Director Lewis Yoder and Director of Operations Andi Kadas. The Christ Foundation was founded by Jerry Moore back in 1971. Jerry Moore was an extremely successful businessman with a heart for helping those in need. He spent much of his life quietly giving to those who needed it most, and when he passed away in 2020, he left most of his estate to The Christ Foundation. Today, The Christ Foundation exists to fund non-profits who are making a Kingdom impact. After Jerry’s death, the Trustees of the Christ Foundation knew they needed to hone in and focus on impacting the lives of children and families. And through that, Hope Bridge was born. We hope that as you have listened to the first six episodes, you have seen the incredible ways that God works through small steps of obedience. For Lisa, an unexpected tragedy led her family to foster care. For Nicole, infertility and experience with the foster care system gave her the empathy to sit with other moms in the thick of foster care. Melanie's “yes” to foster care and a career in social work positioned her exactly where she needed to be for her role today. Brian's connection to the community and heart for the church drew him to desire more involvement from the community around us. For Andi and Lewis, their obedience to carry out Jerry’s legacy was the final puzzle piece to unite everyone for what is now known as Hope Bridge. If you think what you’re doing today doesn’t matter, think again. God is still writing your story. Thank you for joining us for another week of ReStoried. Episode Highlights:

11 Dec 2023 | 10. When Christmas Doesn’t Feel So Merry | 00:26:18
“It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” Or at least that’s what we’re being told on commercials, social media, and pretty much anywhere else we look. But what happens when it’s Christmas time, and you’re feeling anything but merry? In today’s episode, we are here to normalize and validate your feelings if this time of year doesn’t always feel as magical as you think it should. Christmas can often bring out the really hard stuff, especially for vulnerable families. As Foster and Adoptive parents, we put pressure on ourselves to give these children the Christmas that they may have never experienced, sometimes at the expense of our own mental health. We are here today to say that it is okay to say ‘no’ to things that are unrealistic for your family this holiday season. It’s time to focus on the real reason we celebrate Christmas. And as always, we will offer you our experiences and practical tips on surviving the holidays, even when you are in the midst of a struggle. Just remember.. You are enough. You are doing enough. Your kids will remember your presence - not their presents. Episode Highlights:

18 Dec 2023 | 11. Churches, Where Are You? | 00:44:19
It is very clear that God calls all of us to care for the vulnerable, like those in the Foster Care System. So churches, where are you? In this episode, we passionately advocate for the pivotal role of the church in supporting foster children. We share our personal callings into foster care to aid the vulnerable, but it raises a critical concern about sustaining those who take on this challenging responsibility. In this episode, we acknowledge the discomfort and reluctance surrounding foster care, emphasizing the distractions of personal comfort that hinder people from stepping into this brokenness. The government cannot fulfill the unique and crucial role the church is called to play in supporting these families. We hope this episode serves as a compelling call to action for the church community to step up, overcome discomfort, and actively engage in providing much-needed support for foster children. We all share a collective responsibility in caring for the vulnerable, urging the church to be a beacon of hope and assistance in the lives of these children in need. Episode Highlights:

29 Jan 2024 | 17. Take a Chance on Me: Breaking Down the Challenges Faced by Teens in Care with Maranda and Darien Karenbauer | 00:39:28
Did you know that if a teen in foster care isn’t welcomed in by a foster care family, they could potentially be sent to stay at a local detention center? That was the case for one of our guests today, Darien Karenbauer. After being in and out of foster care, two failed adoptions, and nowhere to call home, Darien was sent to live at the local detention center so that he could have a bed and roof over his head. Joining Darien today is his adopted mother, Maranda Karenbauer. Maranda and her husband are foster and adoptive parents who adopted Darien as a teenager. The statistics surrounding teens in foster care facing challenges in finding stable placements are a cause for concern. According to various studies, a significant number of teenagers within the foster care system experience difficulty in securing permanent and supportive homes. These challenges often result in higher rates of instability, as teens may move between multiple placements or age out of the system without finding a long-term family environment. The lack of suitable placements for teens in foster care can have detrimental effects on their emotional well-being, educational attainment, and overall life outcomes. We encourage you to check out this episode as Darien and Maranda address the common misconceptions about fostering teenagers and provide us all with hope and encouragement that stepping out of your comfort zone isn’t always easy, but it is worth it. We are thrilled to announce that both Darien and Maranda will be speaking at our Mobilize Ohio Event! Make sure to register for Mobilize Ohio (linked below) so that you can hear more of their story! 05 Feb 2024 | 18. Fighting to Preserve Sibling Relationships in Foster Care with Tania Paradez | 00:45:40
Welcome back to The ReStoried Podcast! Today, we are joined by Tania Paredez and Bethany Adkins. Both of these women have valuable experience and knowledge in navigating the challenges of the foster care system. Specifically, in today’s episode, we highlight the importance of preserving sibling relationships in Foster Care. Keeping siblings together in foster care is of great importance as it helps maintain the crucial bonds and relationships that exist between brothers and sisters. Siblings share a unique and profound connection that provides emotional support, stability, and a sense of identity. Placing them together in foster care ensures that they can navigate the challenges of being separated from their biological family with the comfort of familiar faces and shared experiences. This continuity in relationships can mitigate the trauma associated with entering foster care, promoting a sense of security and belonging. Moreover, when siblings are kept together, they are more likely to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially, as they can provide mutual encouragement and companionship during a period of upheaval and uncertainty. Ultimately, prioritizing the preservation of sibling bonds in foster care not only contributes to the well-being of each individual child but also reinforces the foundation for healthy family dynamics and future relationships. Unfortunately, in more than 65% of cases, siblings are being separated from each other, adding to the trauma they’ve already experienced. Today, Tania shares her own heart for sibling relationships and how God has used that heart to impact members of her own biological family and beyond. Check out this episode to learn more about sibling relationships in foster care and practical ways you can fight for what is right for these children. Episode Highlights:

Welcome to the ReStoried Podcast. In this episode, Brian shares his journey navigating the delicate balance between clarity and courage in life's pivotal decisions. From grappling with cancer to reuniting with former foster children and making tough church choices, he’s often found himself yearning for crystal-clear direction amidst the uncertainty. In conversations about foster care, Brian has often heard people share the sentiment of "one day" without actually taking the leap. Fear and doubt often hold people back, leaving them frozen in indecision. Scripture has guided Brian’s journey, emphasizing the importance of courageous obedience over exhaustive clarity (1 John 3:16-18; Joshua 1:6–9; Proverbs 3:5–6). In conclusion, Brian’s experiences have taught him that God values our willingness to step out in faith, even when the way forward is uncertain. Through fostering vulnerable children, he’s witnessed firsthand the transformative power of courage and obedience, both in the family’s lives and in his. In this episode, we spotlight June as National Reunification Month and dive into the crucial role foster families play in the reunification process. Our discussion aims to encourage foster families to embrace their part in the team effort required for successful reunification. We'll provide an overview of foster care, emphasizing why reunification is the primary goal despite common misconceptions. Many people struggle with the idea of children returning to their biological homes, but this is the cornerstone of foster care. Building relationships with caseworkers and biological families can seem daunting, yet it is essential for smoother, more effective reunification. These relationships not only improve outcomes for the children but also allow foster families to better advocate for the needs of both the children and their parents. We stress the importance of unity and shared goals among all parties involved, with the child's safety as the ultimate priority and reunification as the next. One frequent challenge for foster families is feeling excluded from the team, which can lead to misunderstandings with caseworkers. We'll explore strategies for foster families to strengthen their rapport with caseworkers and ensure their advocacy is seen as supportive rather than obstructive. Join us as we discuss how fostering collaboration and understanding can lead to better outcomes for everyone involved. Episode Highlights:
