31 Jul 2021Why more Egyptians are adopting the 'Baladi' dog00:42:08

Welcome to the Rescue Tails podcast, the show dedicated to helping you settle your adopted rescue dog.

In this episode I chat with Amina El Shazly about the changing perception of stray dogs in Egypt and why more people are opting to adopt rather than shop.

Amina is the co-founder of Leaf Animals, an organisation that helps alleviate the pressure on rescue centres and individuals by helping them find forever homes for the animals in their care.

Amina did her masters thesis on Egypt's Baladi dog (Baladi is the term used to refer to strays in Egypt. It translates to 'my country' but unfortunately the term is now often used to describe things that are tacky or unwanted).
Through her research she found that these animals were once very highly regarded by ancient Egyptians and often even buried with them. She explains how the stigma of adopting Baladi dogs and cats is starting to die down slowly.

I'm half Egyptian and I lived in Egypt for 18 years so I've seen first hand how dreadful life can be for Egypt’s stray animals with everything from sanctioned poisoning campaigns to pet abandonment and road accidents.

Awareness and interest in animal welfare in Egypt is on the rise and more people are choosing to adopt rather than shop. However, there is still an informational gap and many people struggle to settle their adopted rescue. I'm sure the work Amina and many others are doing will change this over time.

As always, I hope you enjoy this episode and if you'd like me to cover specific topics on future episodes of the podcast, drop me an email at nihal@rescuetails.co.

In this episode I chat with Andrew Hale, about the emotional experience of our rescue dogs and how we, as dog parents, can better support our furry friends to work through some of their emotional challenges.

Andrew explains why it is so important that we understand the underlying causes of our dogs’ behaviour rather than just trying to ‘fix’ the behaviours.

We also talk about how you can help your rescue dog to settle in the first few weeks of bringing it home and Andrew shares some of the dos and don'ts!

Andrew is a Certified Animal Behaviourist with more than 10 years’ experience working in animal behaviour. He follows a Dog Centred Care approach, working with empathy and compassion to try and understand why a dog is exhibiting the behaviours the dog owner might concerned about.

26 Jul 2021What to expect when you first bring your rescue dog home (and how to help it settle in)00:53:58
Welcome to the Rescue Tails podcast! This week, I chat with Emma McLean about what it really takes to settle a rescue dog. Emma is a canine behaviour practitioner and founder of Hound Charming, an animal welfare organisation that specialises in the force free training of hounds and their humans. In this episode, we talk about what to expect when you first bring your rescue dog home, the importance of understanding your rescue dog's emotions and how to read its body language so that you can give it the support it needs. We also discuss how to use distance rather than treats to earn your dog's trust, especially if it's really fearful. We touched on what force free training is and why it's so effective. Do you have questions about settling your rescue dog? Let me know by emailing me on nihal@rescuetails.co and we'll cover those questions in future episodes.
15 Feb 2022If Your Rescue Dog Stressing You Out?00:07:09

In this episode, I want to have a chat with you about how YOU feel. We talk about settling your rescue dog on this podcast a lot. It's what it’s all about. But now that I’ve had my dog Rosa for 8 months, I realise the importance of talking about our emotions as humans.
Once your rescue dog has settled in, you're probably going to start seeing some behaviour changes and not all of them are easy to manage without professional help. And some behaviours can be really stressful for us as the humans in the relationship.
So in this short episode, we talk about what to do if you're feeling emotionally overwhelmed.

If you ever need to chat, feel free to reach out to me via email nihal@rescuetails.co or on Instagram @nihal_and_rosa.

06 Nov 20216 tips to settle your rescue dog - especially if they're fearful00:12:16

Thinking about adopting a rescue dog? Or have you recently adopted one and are struggling to help him or her get settled?
You’re not alone! It can be really stressful for dogs and their human companions in the first few days, weeks and even months.

When I brought my dog Rosa home, we had a really tough start. She was too scared to come inside the apartment and slept by the front door for the first few days. She was scared of pretty much everything including cars, people, other dogs.
This is quite common with rescue dogs.

But fast forward 6 months later and she’s as happy as can be!

So in this episode, I want to share some of the lessons I learnt and the 6 things you must do to help make the transition as easy as possible for your new furry friend.

16 Nov 2021How to Support Your Dog if They're Reactive on Walks and the Mistakes to Avoid00:46:05

In this episode, I invited behaviourist Angie Cook back to the podcast to talk about reactivity. We chat about why some dogs become reactive or sensitive to other dogs and what to do about it.

Angie explains that our dogs often give us signals that they are uncomfortable well before they get anywhere near an approaching dog. We talk about how to read those signals and respond to them to avoid the reaction in the first place.

We also chat about some of the behaviours that dogs naturally do that we as dog parents would prefer they don’t like rolling in dirt, barking or eating poop. Angie explains how suppressing a dog’s natural behaviours can in some cases lead to reactivity so we need to find a balance between managing behaviours and trying to stop them altogether.

In this episode, I chat with dog trainer and behaviourist Anthony De Marinis about why our dogs behave differently with different people.

I asked Anthony to join me for this episode because I noticed that my dog, Rosa, has been behaving very differently when on walks with me versus when she’s with my husband.

30 Jul 2021How to choose the right rescue dog for you (and the mistakes to avoid)00:44:51

Welcome to the Rescue Tails podcast, the show dedicated to helping you settle your adopted rescue dog!

In this episode, I chat with Richard Maxim Walter about how you can choose the right rescue dog for you. All dogs need daily mental and physical exercise as well as emotional support. But depending on the breed or breed mix and the background of the dog, they might need significantly more than what you might be prepared to or able to offer them.

We talk about the specific questions you need to ask the shelter before adopting to make sure you're aware of any potential emotional, behavioural or health issues.

Richard is a certified dog trainer at Club Canino Sant Cugat in Spain, and he is a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals. He's also currently working on his certification from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.

01 Nov 2021Why your expectations about adopting a dog are probably wrong (here's the reality)00:45:58

The truth is, not all adoption stories have a happy ending. Many dogs are sent back to the shelter because of behaviour challenges. It’s estimated that 1 in 5 dogs end up back in shelters every year. And we all know that behind every statistic is a heartbreaking story.

This is the problem Emma Jane-Lee is working tirelessly to help solve.

Emma is a teacher, writer, assessment consultant and canine behaviourist based in France.

In this episode I chat with her about what drives people to adopt a dog and why you shouldn’t judge a dog’s behaviour when it’s in the shelter.

Emma offers behavioural support to people who have adopted dogs from her and other local shelters.

Sometimes her work involves dogs who owners want to keep instead of surrender their dog but they have run out of options. She specialises in working with dogs who have a history of aggression and bites.

Emma is a member of the Pet Professional Guild and is a certified shelter dog behaviour consultant by the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants.

She’s written a book to help dog trainers. It’s available on Amazon as a digital download and also a paperback. Client-Centred Dog Training is aimed at helping dog trainers get the most out of their human clients.

04 Aug 2021How to communicate with your rescue dog and earn its trust00:34:43

In this episode I chat with Sally Adly about how we can communicate more effectively with our rescue dogs. When you bring your dog home, it will probably feel overwhelmed and quite scared. But it takes time for a dog to settle in its new home and it’s so important to learn how to listen to and respond to your dogs needs beyond the basics of food and shelter.

Sally also talks about the importance of taking a force free or punishment free approach to training. She shares some interesting research that shows the negative impact of using aversive or forceful approaches to training. This is such an important topic for all dog owners.
And I would urge anyone who is working with trainers who suggest they use things like shock collars, choke chains, hitting the dog or any force/punishment to look at what the evidence shows. You really are putting yourself and your dog at risk with these approaches.

Here are the research papers Sally referenced in our conversation:

Survey of the use and outcome of confrontational and non-confrontational training methods in client-owned dogs showing undesired behaviors

Efficacy of Dog Training With and Without Remote Electronic Collars vs. a Focus on Positive Reinforcement

Does training method matter? Evidence for the negative impact of aversive-based methods on companion dog welfare

Sally is the founder of Kelabi, a free educational platform that helps dog owners understand more about canine communication. She is also the founder of Egypt’s top rated dog hotel where she hosted and worked with hundreds of dogs over the years.

13 Oct 2021Why there's no such thing as a 'bad' dog - with Kim Brophey00:51:58

In this episode, I chat with Kim Brophey about why we need to rethink our relationship with our dogs and move away from thinking of our dogs as pets and of ourselves as ‘dog owners’ but more like dog parents or carers.

We also chat about why it’s so important that we are more aware of how our emotions get in the way of our dogs' ability to learn and live happy lives.

Kim is an applied ethologist and professional Family Dog Mediator working to solve problems between people and dogs with modern science. If you’re wondering what an ethologist is, well they’re scientists who study the behaviour of animals in their natural environment.
