30 Sep 2021Bonus: Brian Evenson talks about genre-busting fiction00:59:27

The (first) Brian Evenson Interview

Brian Evenson is an academic and acclaimed, award-winning author of novels and stories spanning every conceivable genre. Naturally he is also a Wolfe fan.

* brianevenson.com

* bibliography

* "The Glassy Burning Floor of Hell"

* Interview at Los Angeles Review of Books

"I returned to Wolfe a few decades later because of a student’s interest in his The Fifth Head of Cerberus and realized that Wolfe (along with the very different J. G. Ballard) had had a deep subterranean impact on me as a developing writer, almost without my knowing. I feel like I’ve learned a tremendous amount from him since, as I’ve systematically gone through and read all of his work."

* Civilian Reader Interview

Q: "What inspired the novella? And where do you draw your inspiration from in general?"

A: "It was inspired partly by Gene Wolfe’s novella The Fifth Head of Cerberus. I think that’s such a deft little novella — all three parts of it, but the first part especially — and is really satisfying to read. I think I began there, with an admiration for that book, and then let it take me somewhere slightly different. Lurking in the background are aspects of the world and character characteristics of my novel Immobility, though it’s set in a somewhat different place."

* Coode Street Podcast Interview

"Gary K. Wolfe spends 10 minutes with Brian Evenson to discuss his relationship to genre, reading catastrophe fiction, the rewards of reading Gene Wolfe and Algernon Blackwood, and his forthcoming collection, The Glassy, Burning Floor of Hell."

03 Jun 2021011 Reader Interview - Sierra Reynolds00:13:35

Sierra Reynolds reads from her magic, fabled notes.

  • Fact checking: "cacogen" = "an anti-social person"? Checks out.  Lexicon Urthus notes this but James was never fully conscious of it.
  • "Jolenta" and violet flowers? Checks out. Lexicon Urthus associates the name with "Jolie" but it definitely is also possible to associate with Iolantha which means "violet flower." Also with names like Jolanta and Yolanda.

No specific chapter

This is Side One of our discussion with Mantis about his theory regarding Severian's description of the First Severian in the final chapter of Citadel of the Autarch.

Because Severian's reveal as Mantis's frames it has the potential to affect every chapter of "The Book of the New Sun" there's no really good chapter in which to bring it up. So we placed it here upon Severian's exile, just before Severian is thrust into the wider world.

Claw of the Conciliator, chapter 12: The Notules:

The day before, we had seen uhlans on patrol, men mounted much as we were and bearing lances like those that had killed the travelers at the Piteous Gate.

Citadel of the Autarch, chapter 1, The Dead Soldier:

It was much like the old road the uhlans had been blocking when I had become separated from Dr. Talos, Baldanders, Jolenta, and Dorcas when we left Nessus, but I was unprepared for the cloud of dust that hung about it.

Urth of the New Sun, chapter 34 Saltus Again:

A good inn's there." I answered, "I know," thinking as I did how Jonas and I had walked there through the forest after the uhlans had scattered our party at the Piteous Gate, of finding the wine in our ewer, and many other things.
